I loved the ambiance here. It feels upscale and current and has a good energy. I sat at the bar both times I visited, but ate a full meal. There's an interesting selection of wine (not large, but interesting), and the popover bread thing is to die for. Maybe not die...but I'd be sick for a day if I got to have it the next. Some of the items I ordered were just okay, and one of the two nights I was there the food took forever and a day to arrive. The calamari was nothing special, and the burrata was just okay, too. But the filet (oscar style) was tasty and I would get it again. If I go back to Kalispell I'll make another visit to Mercantile. The Merck is a higher end steakhouse in downtown Kalispell. Getting a reservation wasn't too difficult. The ambiance is very old school Montana.Reminds me of going back in the day 50 or 60 years. I would recommend the restaurant for a nice menu assortment, friendly staff and fair prices considering, it's a high-end steakhouse. We will go back again. read more

We sat at the bar where Shy, Brad & Brad took such wonderful care of us. 1st timers even though we're kinda local (CFalls). 100% impressed with the ambiance, the food, and the service. My NY Strip was grilled to perfection and was a really thick, generous cut of meat. Lots of cool history in this building which our waitress was happy to share with us. For a Friday night in August, it wasn't packed or overly noisy, which made for easy conversation without having to raise voices like in so many other busy establishments. on't waste your time if you don't have a reservation. Despite having numerous empty tables, we were told they do not accept walk-ins and were offered seats at the bar even though our party included a minor. There was no effort to explain the situation or provide realistic options. What made the experience even worse was what happened afterward. When I called to speak with management, I was hung up on once, then accused of being rude simply because I asked to be placed on the waitlist. My husband and children were standing beside me during the entire interaction, and there was absolutely nothing rude about what I said. Instead of addressing our concerns, the manager chose to make false accusations and claimed she would report me to the owner. If your policy is reservation only, be upfront about it. Don't advertise a fine dining experience while treating potential customers with disrespect. Excellent restaurants are defined not only by their food but by how they treat people and this experience failed on every level. We left feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and shocked by the unprofessional behavior. I will never return and cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone expecting courtesy or honest customer service. One star is more than this experience deserved read more

I wish I could leave a positive review for Mercantile Steak. After all, up to the last 10 min or so of our dining experience was good. What ruined it for me was when the bill was brought. Our party of eight did a week-long trip, staying near Kalisepll. Early on in the trip, we wanted to do a splurge'ish dinner to celebrate this gathering of friends and family. we picked Mercantile Steak for this dinner. Everything started out fine. We made the reservation, was promptly seated. The server was friendly. We ordered several cocktail drinks, popovers (yum) and dishes ranging from bison ribeyes, pork chop, prime rib, elk stroganoff, to burger. Everything tasted from decent to pretty good. We had a great time, nothing wow'd, but enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. Then came the bill. we were wondering when there was a charge of $3 per cup of hot water? Really? We had three elderly members of our party that do not like to drink ice cold water, so we asked to bring some hot water. Didn't think too much of it as we often requested the same to any restaurants we go to. This is the first time, we see a $3 charge per cup for the hot water. We asked the server, who non-chalantly replied that this is what they do, to charge hot water like we ordered hot tea. Ok, we did NOT order hot tea. So that felt a bit weird. After a few moments, we asked the server, well, what kind of tea. Is it tea bag? Then if we paid for it, can we get the said tea bags. She didn't understand at first, then was a bit shocked. Then did bring us three wrinkly tea bags of different types (didn't ask us what type of tea was wanted). Ok, so it's a bit petty (yes, I agree) to ask for the tea bag. But it's also a chance for her to make it right. If your customer asked and was surprised about a charge, and then also ASKED for 3 stupid little tea bags, understand that they are not happy. Get your manager or do something to help. Maybe I should've asked directly for a manager, that's on me, but for a higher end restaurant, this was a very strange experience. To be nickled and dimed when you are spending $80 for a steak. I can't imagine going back to a restaurant that operates this way. Lastly, a bit strange for a restaurant like this to charge 3% if using credit card. Again, for a higher end restaurant, I can't imagine people paying cash much. They did list it on the menu in fine print (so it was disclosed, unlike the $9 hot water), but again, felt a bit nickel & dimey rather than just add to the price. read more

He said pur past experience was not acceptable to them (the first visit was under old ownership, second was the new ownership. So we gave them another shot. Mark was our server and we ordered French onion soup, popovers, twice backed potato, my husband had the Elk ribs and I had the filet mignon. Mercantile Steak redeemed themselves 150%! Dinner was fabulous and the steak and ribs were cooked perfectly! Mark was extremely attentive and an overall great server!! One of the best ribeyes if not the best ribeye my husband and I have ever had. We have never had bison before but saw the reviews on the bison ribeye and decided to try it . Admittedly we were a little nervous because we don't like gamey meat but wow were we not disappointed! Do not hesitate, it's amazing. We are visiting from California so this was our first taste of Montana. We got a popover, hamachi and foie gras, the bone marrow, a wedge salad, green beans, and the bison ribeye. The bison ribeye was definitely the star of the show but we also really enjoyed the bone marrow and green beans (I would suggest passing on the hamachi though the foie gras by itself was good). The bison ribeye was very delicious and of amazing quality. It was cooked perfectly and VERY juicy. We also ended up getting the rib roast with the very well salted au jus. We also shared a side of mac and cheese and a house salad. The house salad is very yummy, it had fresh veggies and the chef gives you a lot of diversity in the salad by adding a lot of texture with the veggies to keep you stimulated in a positive way (lol). The mac and cheese was DELICIOUS. It was very creamy and cheesy. I loved that they used pasta that is reminiscent to shells. Every bite had tons of that goopy yummy sauce we love. Let's just say we both went home feeling like absolute bowling balls.. Ambiance is very date-spotty. The place is a bit dim naturally with the dark color pallet and the dim lights. Most of the lighting comes from their storefront window that has a few tables. Pricing is pretty expensive but you also get serves a feast and eat like royalty. I'm not a local but I do think this spot is pretty expensive. Parking was fairly easy to find on a Sunday evening but I suggest making a reservation since seating is a bit limited. read more

Upon arrival for our reservation... the service was exceptional. They had our celebration noted and our waitress (Gabriella) was amazing. We both had the 8 oz filet with the add on Oscar (2 oz of lobster, asparagus and Bernaise sauce) ..... along with an order of the Parmesan Garlic Truffle fries ..... I must say.... located in an old building, they have done a wonderful job of reimagining the space so the vibe feels both private and yet energetic in a good way. Our waiter was effecient and very friendly, and, as advertised, the steaks are amazing. Great cuts of super prime, with just the right amount of rub so that, in reality, the beef needed no sauce, just the herb butter (even though several sauce choices are offered). Yes, the prices are higher than most restaurants in the valley but my hesitation in choosing this place was wrong, the quality of our dinners was outstanding! My son had a filet and rebaked potato while I chose a NY Strip with a side of asparagus. We both agreed that we'd rather eat here once than at a well known statewide restaurant two or three times. Steaks were cooked exactly as ordered and the two sides were great accompaniments. Our waiter was friendly but only hurriedly asked if everything was okay; a little friendly banter would have made us feel more welcome. Another gentleman who could have been the manager didn't seem to interact with the guests either. The decor is very nice and our booth was comfortable. Many customers were eating at the bar and if I were a lone diner I would choose to sit there too. I've dined at great steakhouses in Scottsdale and Phoenix and this steak was as good as I've had there. read more

By far one of my favorite Steak Houses I've ever been to. My wife and I both had Ribeyes cooked to a perfect warm medium rare. For our sides we had The best mashed potatoes you'll ever taste and the best Mac and Cheese you'll ever eat. The service was great. Well maybe based on the current reviews things have improved. I took my wife for her birthday over a year ago and we came away saying never again. I made a reservation and told them it was my wife's birthday. They seated us next to the front hostess counter, the front door and the live band at the front. We requested a different table and got a better one. My wife ordered the filet medium rare and it came medium well... almost well done. The server said they would cook another and blamed the new cook, but by the time it came out I was basically done with my meal. I ordered a different steak and it too wasn't cooked the way it was ordered, but it was close enough I didn't complain. In the end the most memorable item was the big rolls that came with the meal... which is the wrong thing for a steak house to be remembered for. Second hand; my neighbor told me they went there as a part of four to celebrate a birthday. Sat at the bar and had drinks and then an hour at the table when they tried to order more drinks the server told them their time was up they needed the table and asked them to leave????? Really? As I said, maybe the manager has got their "stuff" together, and they fired the guy in the back who doesn't know how to cook a steak, and allow people to sit and enjoy a meal without time constraints (or at least say something when you make a reservation). I'll need to hear from someone I know that it's gotten better before we go back. read more

This was literally the best meal I have ever been served in the entire state of Montana. I grew up here and this was hands down the best food I've eaten from any establishment in this state. This is worth the trip especially if you're looking for a special meal. We had the popovers, mushroom toast, wedge salad, beet salad, I had the filet Oscar style, my husband had the bone in bison steak with sauces. We also had a side of creamed greens and Mac and Cheese with the smoked prime rib bites. Ended the meal with a flourless chocolate cake. I also had a great glass of Côtes du Rhône. For sides, mashed potatoes (amazing), and twice baked potato (way too dry and not very hot). The peppercorn sauce was out of this world delicious. But it was a very noisy place, making conversations difficult. Beyond that, the prices were also out of this world but not in a good way. $21 for a cocktail. $66 for the 8-oz filet A LA CARTE! So while we throughly enjoyed the meal, we didn't order appetizers or desserts. These are big city prices which we didn't expect in Montana. Sat at the bar and ordered up a filet mignon. It was tender and tasted great. The side sauces (peppercorn) provide the right extra flavor. The baked potato side is as truly extra loaded, and the asparagus was crisp. It was a spendy meal, but memorable.
