This is Roman pizza, not flatbread! There are many different varities of pizza other than boring NJ pizza with Sysco ingredients. Here, the dough is fermented for days and it is made from Italian wheat, rice and spelt flour (like a proper, authentic Pinsa Romana, Google it!) instead of unhealthy bleached, bromated flour found at 75- to 90-percent of most pizza restaurants in North Jersey. The quality of the toppings is also considerably better, which is why Mercato's pizzas are more expensive. Is the extra effort and expense worth it? I think so. I can taste the difference and I appreciate the crunchy exterior, soft inside textures and not feeling bloated after having a few slices like I do when I have a cheaper generic NJ pizza. I also prefer it over Neapolitan style pizza, unless it's pizza from Alta Irpinia (which also ain't cheap but so. Damn. Good.). If you're looking for run of the mill, cheap family feedbag pizza, go elsewhere. But if you can appreciate the finer things, Mercato is a good choice for a genuine, authentic Italian variety of pizza that's very hard to find around here, even in Manhattan too. read more

Decent food but overpriced for what you get. No bread on table. Pasta portion small. A large shareable pizza is $45-49. Appetizers seemed pricey in the $18-24 range even for something like meatballs. When a restaurant's website lists the menu without prices, you know they're above market prices. Decent byob place for a casual night if they had casual prices but for the price you might want to consider going to a regular byob Italian place for more than pizza. read more

I ordered takeout from Mercato Roman Pizza Kitchen and was disappointed with both the food and pickup experience. When I arrived, the staff had difficulty locating my order even though it was right in front of them. The interaction was not very friendly, and communication was challenging. As for the food, the Pala Margherita pizza had a very dry crust and lacked flavor. The eggplant croquets with pasta were bland, the sauce was not well balanced, and the croquets were greasy and mushy. To make matters worse, the pasta was packed in an unsuitable takeout container. The box was not designed to hold a sauced pasta dish, resulting in leakage and a messy presentation by the time I got home. Overall, the food quality, packaging, and pickup experience did not meet my expectations. Hopefully these issues can be addressed because the restaurant has potential. Not worth 41.00 for a pie and 30 for a pasta dish. Garbage! Coming from a trined Chef for over 45 years of experience! I had to try with all the hype going around. read more

Excellent pizza and pasta. It is a little pricey but worth it if you are one of those people who don't mind paying for quality. No pizza like it anywhere. Get the large pinsa style and take some home. It heats up well late night or next day. Service was average, maybe slightly above. Ambiance is fine. It's what you make of it. Very comfortable in any style of dress. Kid friendly. They could use some tvs on the bar side of the restaurant but otherwise it's pretty good the way it is. Our first time at Mercato, we took our son and his girlfriend out, as she was from out of town. Located in lovely Westwood, NJ, and very close to a computer lot in which we were able to park. We started with a delicious pepperoni pizza to share, the crust was amazing and loved the slightly brown edges of the pepperoni. As a carb conscious person I got the chicken milanese and my husband got the shrimp entree. The chicken in the milanese was the best cutlet I've ever had, so fresh and topped with a delicious salad. The shrimp dish was just amazing! Large shrimp surrounded by an array of small veggies. Such a great option for those who want guilt free dining without skipping out on flavor! My son and his girlfriend opted for the housemade pasta dishes. Ryan got the pasta carbonara which was creamy & flavorful, his girlfriend got the pasta bolognese, which was the best she'd ever had! To finish off, we ordered a couple of different desserts for all of us to try. The uniquely crafted options, offered something for everyone and were visually appealing and outstanding! Our server was very pleasant and attentive, answered any questions we had on our entrees, and kept our drinks filled. Over Mercato was casual dining, with a lean towards a fine-dining menu. Came here on a Saturday night for dinner with some girl friends. I made a reservation ahead of time and happy we did because the place was busy. Parking was a little bit difficult to find on a Saturday night. The place is a BYOB. The waiter we had was extremely friendly and he let us take our time reading the menu and gave us some suggestions. We started with the meatballs and Chopped arcobaleno salad. The salad was absolutely delicious. It was very unique and fresh. I would definitely get this again. I also really enjoyed the meatballs and thought that they were very tasty. For a pizza we split the large pepperoni pizza and there was more than enough for the three of us. We had a lot of leftovers. I wish that they had an option of a medium pizza. The pizzas are expensive, but we knew that going in looking at the menu. It is a place that you would wanna go enjoy the pizza instead of takeout. read more

Saturday night takeout. Good: all the food was tasty. No complaints. Pizza was crisp but not burnt (not easy to do). Meatballs had good flavor and texture. Porchetta was tender and had good flavor. Bolognese was good but a little greasy. Takeout was ready a few minutes late from the expected time. Bad: WAY too expensive for pizza and pasta. $21 for a personal (plain) pizza?? Can only order online for takeout, and the prices on the takeout menu are more $$ than the normal menu. Each dish is $1 to $3 more. It's not a lot of $$ but it's also a bit annoying. Location is difficult due to poor parking options. They also need to use different (better) takeout containers. The pizza boxes were great. The food containers were cheap and flimsy and leaked grease onto the counter. read more

A great addition to downtown Westwood!!! Wonderful service and fun ambience .Quality ingredients = delicious food. It's fun to come with friends and order dishes to share. For starters, I would recommend the beet salad, the grilled octopus and the amazing meatballs. Then order a few pasta dishes to share... This is flat bread not pizza. The small pie is supposed to be thinner than the family size and it's very doughy. We were so disappointed. But on top of that, we had a 6 pm reservation for 4 people and they asked us to leave at 7:15 after we had salad and two pizzas. She didn't ask if we wanted dessert. She said the next reservation was waiting. I asked her how long a table of 4 is given and she said 90 minutes but since they were here they wanted the table. Food is good but inconsistent. Potatoes on pie are sometimes still a bit raw. in addition, too sparing with the sauce - they need to do a better job. Also, a large salad is really not that big - if charging that much for a salad, make it generous. And $14 for a non alcoholic beverage is a bit high. As far as atmosphere they MUST get some sort of screen or barrier for the working part (not open cooking section) of the kitchen which opens to the dining area. We were a party of four on a Saturday night and were seated promptly at our reservation time. It is a BYOB, but they offer many mocktails that you could easily add your choice of mixer to. Many dishes on the menu sounded great, so we ordered appetizers to share, a salad, a pasta and two pinsa pizzas, as well as dessert. Everything was delicious! We especially enjoyed the ricotta appetizer, the arcobaleno salad and the cauliflower and homemade pasta dish. We are fans of Roman style pizza and these did not disappoint!
