BEEF STEW with LEMONGRASS CHICKEN BANH
    Kathy P.

BÒ KHO BÁNH MÌ Merci Beaucoup serves an amazingly delicious steaming hot bowl of bò kho which is a Vietnamese beef stew. We added pho noodles and ordered lemongrass chicken bánh mì on the side. This was the perfect combination on a cold winters day. *Small Family Restaurant Series* Commercial Drive is also referred to as Vancouver's "Little Italy"! But thought the years, it has become a melting pot of all cultures you can imagine...just made coming to this neighbourhood that much more interesting every time! Merci Beaucoup Cafe .. the name rekindles the link between Vietnam & France and how the two cultures co-created one of the most interesting cuisine in the world! ( Google this and it makes a good read...while sipping your Vietnamese Coffee! ) Highlight of our meal ... Banh Mi - House Special #1 ( Highly Recommended ) All the ingredients are make with care and I have to say their house meatball really put this BM up a few notches!! Fresh crusty French Baguette's texture and the savoury & moist filling immediately satisfies your taste buds!! Service is very friendly, no wonder all the customers that I have observed during our meal, are mostly regulars and I can surely see why! PS .. Their "London Fog" is outstanding!!

Happy to see that Au Petit Cafe lives on through this venue as Merci Beaucoup Cafe. It's nestled on the same street that houses Vera's On The Drive, Harbour Oyster + Bar and Marcello Ristorante & Pizzeria. We've been twice for lunch and never had any trouble snagging a table. Service is friendly and they brought us out both water and tea. Seems to be a popular spot for takeout. The menu consists of banh mi, pho, vermicelli bowls, rice and drinks. Their pho is in the $14.00 to $16.00 price range. They also sell their own chili oil ($11.00) and xo sauce ($18.00). Trip #1 - Banh mi ($1.50) - fresh and crispy. - Herbs - bean sprouts, basil and lemon wedge. One of the smaller portion sizes I've seen. - Pho ga nuong sa (#16) ($16.00) - broth reminded me of a tastier version of wonton soup. Sweeter with some star anise coming through. Lemongrass chicken was tender. - Pho ca ri bo (#21) ($15.00) - the beef was the star of the dish but there were also a couple pieces of tendon. Carrots were chunky and tender. Broth had body and depth; interesting with turmeric added. Trip #2 - Pho bo kho (#21) ($15.00) - as close as you'll get to Au Petit Cafe's best dish. The broth was flavourful but a touch on the sweet side. Beef was tender along with a couple of satisfying chunks of carrot. The noodles clumped up slightly but we liked the bean sprouts that were underneath. - Bun cha ca (#18) ($15.00) - broth was light, clean and simple. Doesn't beat our favourite bun cha ca in town but it was decent. Wish it was more dilly. MBC is a nice addition to the 'hood. Will return soon to try more bowls.

I had read many reviews of this restaurant before actually getting the chance to experience this cozy little restaurant. The food is good and the portion sizes are generous, depending on what you're ordering. I ordered the Large House Special Pho and the spring rolls. I usually have a big appetite, and this place put me in a satisfied state. I'll be back if I'm ever in the area, as I'm curious as to what specialty menu items I can order that others places don't carry. For instance I noticed they have a egg foam Vietnamese coffee, I've never even seen this at other Vietnamese restaurants; so I'm eager to go back and try this. Anyways, the experience was pleasant and the service was good. I'll definitely be back.

I must say this before I post my review... I wasn't supposed to come here. I was supposed to go to Lunch Lady. Fortunately, Lunch Lady wasnt opened that day so I ended up walking into Merci Beaucoup! SERVICE: I was greeted once I got into the door and they were super friendly. The guy here was ready to take his lunch, but decided to help us out first and also get our order in. What great customer service! FOOD: I have to recommend this place to everyone because it's just fantastic and clean viet eats. Real viet coffee and amazing viet banh mi! The crunch and the flavors you get. I would highly recommend the special house banh mi! I also really likes the pork vermicelli bowl. PRICE: If you're trying to compare this with other places in vancouver, it's about the same price as you would pay anywhere else. Not too pricey but not cheap either. Really really enjoyed my time here and came a few times after that day without a thought of going into Lunch Lady. So that's saying lots for a foodie like me :)

BEST BANH MI !! Okay, first off, everybody knows about the other Banh Mi place in Vancouver on Victoria Dr in South Vancouver. But this place is even more amazing for Banh Mi IMO and it is such a hidden secret. I got the shredded chicken Banh Mi and what makes this banh mi my favorite is that it's different from others. It's very nicely toasted and the chicken was cooked so well that it was tender and moist so that when you bite into it, it feels as if the entire sandwich just melts in your mouth. The sauce also feels as if it's a little more creamy, but overall i am definitely coming back here and recommending it to family, friends and others. I would definitely eat this on the spot as they actually toast and warm the sandwich up as they serve it to you!

    Vegetarian pho (vegan)

I noticed that they have vegetarian (indeed vegan) options, so I stopped in for lunch during the week. Located very close to a couple other Vietnamese places that also have vegan options (Viet Family, Lunch Lady), this area is becoming even more concentrated with vegan options. It was quite packed inside when I arrived, but there was a spot at the window for one I got their vegetarian pho ($15 plus tax), which comes with a tomato squash broth, unusual for vegan phos I've seen anywhere. I was told it'd take 10 minutes, since they cook up the veggie broth from scratch, and indeed it came out in about 10 minutes. It comes with nicely cooked thin noodles, sliced fried tofu puffs, and various veggies: squash, tomato, zucchini and Asian celery, sprinkled with cilantro and green onions. The garnishes include lettuce (romaine), fresh basil, bean sprouts and lime. The broth was unique and really nice--fairly tomatoey, but too overburdening. Large portion and very hearty. Not exactly authentic, but it was very satisfying. On the pricier side for vegan pho options in town, but the quality seems higher and thus worth it. Very friendly and astute service. Recommended.

Very average Vietnamese food, especially for the price you pay. We got a large pho for $18, which would be considered a small size at other pho places in Vancouver. The meat was good quality however the broth was too salty. We also got the meat lover bahn mi and while the price for this item was acceptable, the bahn mi itself was dry and lacked flavour and ingredients. Overall, this meal was pretty disappointing considering there are much better options around the city.

The hype is REAL! You wouldn't believe how estatic I was when I saw on an IG story about a new Vietnamese spot opening called Merci Beaucoup Cafe, which is owned and operated by a former Au Petit Cafe chef (honestly, they had me at Au Petit)! I was quite bummed when Au Petit closed down permanently last year (after 25 years) due to the pandemic. It was one of my all-time favourite Vietnamese spots in Vancouver.. so I was happy to hear about Merci Beaucoup Cafe! And what a happy coincidence that I had the Friday off of their official grand opening day (March 18). Looks like I went at a perfect time as based on their IG account, seems like things got pretty hectic later in the day. I ordered before 11am and picked it up around 20 mins later. I chose their House Special, Meat Special, and Lemongrass Chicken banh mi sandwiches. Fiancé and I shared the House Special and Lemongrass Chicken, and both were absolutely delicious. They don't taste much different than Au Petit's (which is completely a good thing). The Meat Special went to my brother (verdict unknown but I don't doubt that he loved it too). Can't wait to order more again soon! What a great addition (back) into the Vancouver restaurant scene.

    Shredded chicken banh mi

Great place for Vietnamese food on the Drive. We got the shredded chicken banh mi and the lemongrass chicken rice dish. Their banh mis were in the middle of the range of banh mis we've tried. Their lemongrass chicken was quite flavorful although I wasn't a fan of the salad included. Overall, a good place for Vietnamese food!

Delicious and fun place! Highly recommend the sandwiches here! My first Vietnamese cuisine experience in BC and wasn't disappointed. Proper cafe su da also!

We arrived about 3pm on a weekend day, and were told it would be about 20-minutes before our party of 5 would be able to have a table. It's a quaint little space that seemed pretty relaxed, and we would learn exactly how incredibly relaxed when we returned (after their call 30-minutes later) that our table was ready. When we returned, they space they intended for us was most definitely not ready: there were still food scraps on both small tables and the third they had intended to include for our seating still had diners at it - who (not that they had to) ended up rushing their exit when they noticed us waiting. Once we were seated, we were quickly given menus by a friendly waitperson, and furnished with our choice of iced-water or hot tea. That was the last of anything being anything happening quickly. After we asked to place our order, the serve of fried spring rolls arrived in a reasonable time; but when it came to our individual orders of noodles.. the time between the first of us receiving our bowl of pho and the last (fifth) would have been at least 20-25 minutes. No check-ins or apology from any of the waitstaff until we queried if the meal for our fifth diner had been missed because it had taken so long and everyone else's food was getting cold. Worth noting that there were empty tables by then, and no one else appeared to be waiting for their meals. Perhaps I've been fortunate with literally every Vietnamese place (mostly similar sized or a bit larger) I've ever had pho at, where even when we had 12-15 people dining together, serves of pho were turned around quickly usually with everyone at the table receiving their food in quick succession. About my order: the waitperson that took my order allowed a substitution on my order for tendon instead of meatballs with my raw beef: my order showed up with raw beef and meat balls. When I queried and they took my order away without any apology, what came back was now cooked beef and some pieces of tendon (perhaps they fished out the meatball pieces and added a couple of pieces of tendon). By the time it was returned to me, I'd resigned to hoping it tasted okay. What I had was a bowl of pho with: * sliced medium-well beef (2 or 3 pieces) * well-done beef flank (2 pieces) * tendon (2 pieces) $15 + tax + tip = ~$19 / $20 average When we got the attention of a waitperson to be able to pay for our meals, no bills were provided and we were each asked what we ordered - was there no record of our order?! One of our party laughed saying they were surprised we weren't asked to quote the prices of our orders also. It was just awkward. Overall the company of my dining companions were the highlight of my meal. There are too many Vietnamese cafes, bistros and restaurants in Vancouver with good food and service for me to say I'd dine here again. Summary Food: 2.5/5 it was okay, wasn't bad, wasn't good Service: 2/5 I'm sure they're nice people, from a dining experience perspective though, it wasn't good, especially since a tip of 20% or more seems to be generally expected at these small businesses. Space: 2/5 dining space was worn but okay, the washroom floor was wet, slippery and a space waiting for someone to fall over and be possibly seriously injured. Had a brightness to it yet also very, very spicy. Tastes great on many of the dishes, especially if you wanted a nice "kick" to the food. I believe you can order a jar to take home if you wish.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

Portions were very generous. The salad was perfect with everything very fresh, as it should be but often isn't in some places. Plump prawns and the scent and taste of basil was prominent. Delicious! The lemongrass chicken (we ordered extra chicken) with a spring roll was also very generous. We did not finish it between the two of us. Again, all was fresh, tasty and hot. This is one of our standard orders and Pho Goodness did not disappoint. The Garden Rolls were absolutely the #1 worst ones we've ever eaten! We've had hundreds of fresh rolls at dozens of places and sadly, none were as tasteless as these. To add insult to injury, the watery sauce also had NO flavor. To add more insult, they were baggy and poorly wrapped and the innards kept falling out. Not fun and definitely not good. The king oyster mushrooms were very good, but there was a ton of pink mayo dousing it. I would have preferred the sauce be in a separate bowl so we could choose how much dipping we'd like to do. The saffron tofu bowl was sensational! Perfectly spiced and full of a huge variety of well-cooked veggies plus the saffron rice was good too.
