Holy smokes, Merci Jones, I want to love you... and I think I eventually will. There's something here. You can feel it. The bones of a really great bar are already in place, and I genuinely appreciate the effort and vision behind it. Walking in, the decor immediately stands out...I love the subtle nods paying homage to the old Alligator Garden. That kind of storytelling matters, and it gives the space character. Pricing is fair, the happy hour is solid, and yes... I even walked out with a t-shirt, so clearly something is working. That said, the layout and vibe didn't quite land for me at least not yet. The booths feel a bit like a temporary solution, almost like placeholders until something more lounge-forward comes in. Sitting there, especially facing Broadway, it felt a little too open and less intimate than I expected. I found myself finishing one drink and thinking, "Alright, onto the next spot." Now, that could just be me. I'm coming from the northwest side, not right across the street or living in the nearby flats, so maybe I'm not the core crowd. But still, I think there's an opportunity here to lean harder into a more defined, cozy identity especially like that popular corner of the bar on the right side. More of that energy, please. Service-wise, there are some growing pains but also some bright spots. During the Fat Tuesday grand opening, I ordered a Black Manhattan and was told it couldn't be made. Came back a week later, and Rachel stepped in and made it happen she's been the standout and honestly a big reason I'm willing to keep coming back. On another visit, I ordered a Boulevardier. It was good, but I was a little surprised there wasn't a deeper conversation about spirit preference. The bar gives off a vibe of elevated cocktail knowledge, so I think guests naturally expect that extra level of engagement. I've heard the staff was brought in with a more novice-friendly approach, which is totally fair--but there's definitely room to grow into that higher-end cocktail identity the space hints at. And that's really what this comes down to; potential. Merci Jones feels like a bar that's still figuring itself out, and I mean that in a good way. Like a cocktail that hasn't quite hit its perfect balance yet but you can taste where it's headed. I'll be back. I want this place to grow on me. And I have a feeling, given a little time and refinement, it absolutely will.

Good experience, except I don't think they have servers? We waited about 20 mins before realizing we needed to order at the bar. Ambiance was nice, except for the roach twitching near the restroom, but it happens

The cutest and friendliest new bar in town. Plus, hot dogs with your cocktail on Mondays? Say less. Love the fast service and happy hour. Give this place a visit.

Drinks were great. Just wish they had food options or allow food from their sister properties Pumpers or Hot Joy

The Modernist -- A True Speakeasy Experience in San Antonio…read more If you're in downtown San Antonio, take a break from the River Walk and check out The Modernist. This is a true speakeasy-style lounge that's easy to overlook from the outside--it looks like a regular, unassuming place. But once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes. The interior is cozy, intimate, and has that hidden-gem feeling you want from a speakeasy. The staff members are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I had the pleasure of having Adan behind the bar, and this guy knows how to make a good drink! As always, I started with my go-to Old Fashioned. I have to say, it was easily one of my top two Old Fashioneds I've ever had. Then I told Adan to surprise me, and he came up with some kind of peanut butter chocolate martini. Let me just say... it was a true pleasure. Rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious. What I really liked about The Modernist is that it feels like a place the locals actually frequent rather than just another tourist spot. I genuinely had a great time here. If you're visiting San Antonio and find yourself downtown, give The Modernist a try. Step away from the River Walk for a little while--you might just discover your new favorite spot.

My wife and I went to The Modernist after seeing it on social media. There wasn't a drink menu, and…read morewe were told the idea is that you tell the bartender what you like and they make something for you. Her first drink was a lavender-style cocktail and was fine. For her second drink, she told the bartender to surprise her. He gave her a look and asked more than once if she was sure she wanted him to surprise her. Instead of making her an actual cocktail, he poured her what seemed to be a straight, extremely bitter liqueur. The whole interaction felt sarcastic and like he was intentionally messing with her rather than trying to make her something she would enjoy. What bothered me most was the attitude behind it. We weren't being rude, demanding, or causing problems. We were there to have a good time and experience the whole "tell us what you like and we'll make you something" concept. I did call the number listed for the business afterward trying to speak to someone about it. The person who answered said I had the wrong number and didn't know what I was talking about. I got angry during that call and said some things I shouldn't have, and I can admit that. But that doesn't change how disappointing the experience at the bar was. We expected a creative and welcoming experience and instead left feeling like my wife had been mocked. I hope management sees this and addresses it, because the concept of the place is great, but the way we were treated completely ruined it for us

I arrived without a reservation, but that wasn't going to work so I made one about an hour ahead and just waited it out. I'm glad I did. The swordfish Asada was delectable and all of the accoutrements that come with it take the whole thing to another level. I couldn't decide between the white mole cauliflower and guacamole to start so I got both. It would be hard to imagine not having either as they are both really special dishes. The tortillas and honey butter that came out are basically like having your dessert early. I think the highlight of my meal was that I was eating a green onion, and one of the servers walked by and in the nicest possible way suggested that I didn't know how to properly eat it. He was correct as it turns out, after he showed me how they did it around the kitchen table growing up I enjoyed them so much more. Both super cool and brave of him to suggest. Can't wait for my next visit. Absolutely stellar. If you're on the fence about eating here, get off the damn fence and make a reservation.

The quesadilla was so good we started eating it before I could even get a picture! You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in San Antonio.

One of the best restaurants I went to in San Antonio…read more The food was perfect. The deviled eggs were very good with a bit of spice. Definitely a surprise as an appetizer but good. We also had the snapper throats and loved them. The aioli was a great sauce with them. I had the gulf catch of the day, which was grouper, and it was so good. Great seasoning, perfectly flaky and moist, a nice crust on the outside. With that we had some jalapeno corn bread which was also delicious. Not too dry at all. I was hoping for it to be spicy but it was not. For dessert, I gad panna cotta and it was a great ending. Not too sweet, but the berries made up for that. The lavender meringue bites had a great crunch. Our server (Maya) was excellent. She was so friendly and helpful. Finally, the decor is unmatched anywhere. It used to be a brewery and they kept the old pipes and valves, which look very cool. It has a great vibe. I highly recommend. Without the need to, I'll mention anyway that it's not cheap. But it's worth it.

Really enjoyed the grilled oysters and the pork chop was amazing; maybe slightly overcooked but it was brined and so flavorful- nice & smokey; enough for 2. Pass on the summer squash- would be tasty if squash was shredded (like spaghetti) but cubed, the texture was off-setting. Drinks are fun - had the "madame" -yum. Fun spot - definitely would return.
