Visited the Big Island recently...& disappointed in the food at most of the restaurants. Meridia by contrast was beyond amazing...perfect setting, perfect sunset, & the most delicious, creative, beautifully presented food...& a great menu. We are foodies & appreciate good food & service. Meridia went beyond our expectations. We actually returned a second time for our last night dinner. Kyli, the manager, came to our table to chat & see if we enjoyed our meal...lovely lady. And, Chef Junior Ulep also came to our table to chat. Our servers, Jon & Romi (not sure this name is correct) were both spot on with great service...& Jon came to our table the second night remembering us from our first night there. Judy our waiter was the best waiter ever!!! She was amazing. My brother and I did the tasting menu($60 ea) and were extremely happy. The meatballs are a must get for the first course. We also had the oyster, but it really just tasted like mango. The entres were a decent portion. I got the risotto and thought it was very well portioned, but slightly watery. I think a little cheese would have made it amazing. The venison pappardelle was hearty and heavy. We got the cheese cake and were not very impressed. My boyfriend got the caprese and pappardelle and he was super disappointed. The pappardelle sizing wasn't that big, nor was the caprese. He only saved about $10 too, and was left disappointed and hungry. Just get the tasting menu, everything is expensive at the hotel and you're in Hawaii. There's nothing else around anyway. read more

Particularly, Donna was an incredible waitress who offered helpful suggestions and considerations for diet preferences while helping to figure out what to order. Our hostess, Sharon was very warm and friendly, immediately starting our dining experience off on a great start with how personable and inviting she was. You enter into a warm and inviting check in space, filled with warm lighting, natural woods, and personable hostesses. As you check in and wait to be seated, the smell of fresh bread wafts through (it tastes just as divine as it smells). The entry opens into a round space with a bar and tables set in a way that blends well with the architecture of the building and is open to plenty of natural light. The outdoor patio curves around the front of the restaurant facing stunning views of the ocean. We stayed rather late due to losing track of time in such an amazing restaurant. A waitress, Elizabeth walked us out. She was incredibly charismatic with a great sense of warm humor, providing the perfect end to the night. Really wanted to like this place but it fell short. Greeted by a friendly hostess that guided us to our table. Took awhile for the server to come to the table, as they seemed short-staffed. While waiting to be greeted the runner tried to deliver us someone else's Caprese Salad. We stopped him before placing it on the table letting him know we didn't order yet. The bread with oil and vinegar was good to start with. Placed an order for the Wild Ahi Crudo and Frito Misto to start. Our appetizers arrived after awhile, just unfortunately to the table behind us. This table did not refuse the food being delivered to their table, as they had clearly never been out to dinner before and think appetizers just get randomly brought to your table throughout the night. As we watched them enjoy the appetizers meant for us while joking to the server about the free food and feeding some to the dog that was sitting on their lap the entire evening, we continued sitting there waiting... After awhile longer our appetizers were delivered. My girlfriend asked if that was cheese on the Frito Misto (clearly seeing it on the dish) since she doesn't eat dairy and it was not stated on the menu that it included cheese. The server apologized and said yes there is, then walked away. We double checked the menu to make sure we didn't just misread the menu, but after confirming the menu didn't say the dish included cheese we asked the server to have it remade. She kindly took the dish back to have it made for a third time. When the re-fire was ran back out by who appeared to be the manager, it was about ran to another table beside us until our server caught it as he was approaching that table. Both appetizers had good flavor and we enjoyed them. For entrees I ordered the Paella Mixta and my girlfriend the Almond Crusted Ahi. The presentation of the Ahi was bizarre with half the plate covered and the other half empty like they forgot to plate the other half of the dish... My Paella was a good size portion (which the server recommended because of this after telling her I was hungry), but unfortunately most of the components were over cooked. The rice had great flavor, but the clams were way overdone and the sausage burnt, and the shrimp more done than I would have liked also. My Totally Redeemed cocktail was flavorful and well balanced, probably the best thing of the meal. I know staffing is an issue for a lot of places right now because of Covid, but for the reputation of this resort we expected better. Would definitely like to try this place again in the future after they get more training systems in place. First time at this resort and I recommend you eat elsewhere for the reasons below. 1) 30 minutes to get a glass of wine (the apps actually came out before the wine and we ordered the wine before the apps). 2) The side of mushrooms ($12) came out cold and without seasoning...including salt. We sent these back. 3) The wild boar ragu lacked flavor and complexity and they also forgot to plate it with the goat parmesan. 4) The fish special was a grilled mahi mahi with lobster risotto and scallops. The scallops were good. The fish lacked salt and was quite bland, but it was cooked perfectly. The risotto was very oily and again lacked flavor. Overall, the food lacked flavor and the service was lackluster (we requested the salt and pepper to season the entrees). When you're spending $40-50 per plate at a Westin resort, it should feel and taste that way. The service and quality did not match the price point. We will not be coming here again and will eat dinner off property the rest of the stay. read more

The best part was the excellent tasting Charcuterie the meats were absolutely wonderful!! They Tasted imported and yummy !Have the passion fruit sorbet for dessert! Amazing food! Our server ELIZABETH was the best!!! My family of four had dinner here one evening while we were staying at this property. The ambience is a beautiful setting overlooking the ocean and we made reservations to make sure that we had a nice view. We ordered a few things that were not on the menu due to our vegetarian restrictions. The pasta they make in house and you can tell it is not from a box. They use fresh vegetables from their garden and their sauce was also super flavorful. Flat bread was also delicious and my husband really enjoyed his meal. While the food was exceptional, the service was even better. Our server, Elizabeth, really added to the experience and she explained the ingredients of the dishes we ordered. If you dine at this restaurant please ask to have Elizabeth as your server and you and your family will have an even more enjoyable experience. read more

Bottom line: 4.5 stars. Delicious fine dining, wonderful service, a beautiful ambiance overlooking the ocean at sunset, at pricey but reasonable prices for the value you get. Food: Really delicious- had the cataplana (kona clams, boar sausage, tomatoes, homemade croutons in a delicious broth) as well as the bacon wrapped dates (also delicious with a lilikoi sauce) for starters. Mains were the lamb chops (really delicious and perfectly cooked) as well as the scallops (really well cooked scallops but maybe a bit too much of the pasta that comes with it and a little on the spicier side). The keiki fresh fish dish was great and a good value at $8. Had tiramisu (good) and the goat cheese cheesecake (great) for dessert. Keiki ice cream (2 scoops for 3.50 was a great deal) Add some delicious bread and a nice glass of chardonnay and was really pleased with the food. Ambiance: classy yet casual- we had our two young girls (3 and 1) and felt very comfortable. The seats are generally all outdoors and have awesome views of the ocean with the sunset as your backdrop. Also, pretty great to have whales breaching and spouting in the background. Service: Really friendly and warm. Efficient. Only misstep was not providing spoons with dessert but that was quickly corrected. Our primary server (Donna?) was super nice and offered to take a family photo for us which was appreciated. Value: So, it is a really nice restaurant, the nicest at a nice hotel (the Westin), overlooking the ocean, so you're going to pay a little. That being said, starters were about 12-18 and entrees about 45 with desserts about 10. Again, the keiki menu (8 for a fish dish and 3.50 for ice cream) was great value. It's been a couple years since we've eaten here due to the pandemic, and it's the first restaurant we've eaten out at in about a year. But the covid rates are so low in Hawaii, we felt it was safe, especially at an open air place like Meridia. Unfortunately it was raining when we arrived and I was nervous we may be stuck indoors. But, we were seated at a lovely table on the perimeter with a view of the water and landscape, yet still under cover from the showers. The food was top notch. The winner of the evening was my daughter's lamb ragu on pappardelle. It was the best dish of that type I've tasted. My pork chop was excellent, and the portion was ridiculously large. My young son was happy with the keiki menu. Also, don't miss the bacon-wrapped dates on the appetizer menu! I wish we had ordered two, everyone gobbled them up. Overall, it was an excellent experience. Also, and I know the restaurant can't take credit for it, but the sunset was KILLER and we had a rainbow as well! Pure magic! read more

This was without a doubt the most disappointing and least pleasant restaurant experience we have had in the last decade. Our waitress was lovely but everything else was horrific. We waited half an hour for our drinks. We asked for more bread while we waited and we're warned there would be a surcharge for that. Our waitress described a great fish special for the night. What I'm starting to learn about this island is that a) everything is expensive (and this says a lot from someone from NorCal where everything is also expensive) and b) lots of restaurants are getting by on view alone and don't seem to care to serve the equivalent of airport food on a fancy plate. Thankfully this isn't one of those spots. Yes, still pricey but this time actually good and worth it. To start they give you a trio of delicious breads. I had the scallops with gnocchi which were awesome- perfectly cooked with a medley of tasty veggies and puttanesca sauce underneath. Portion was a little petite but totally fine for me. Partner had the shish kebab and raviolo. The shish kebab portion was about the same as my scallops but less than have the price and he said it was perfect. The raviolo was good too. Sadly we stuffed our faces with roadside malasadas before dinner so didn't get to try desert but I'm sure it would've been great. Espresso to end the meal was super good though. My husband and I had dinner three days ago. Our reservation was at 7:15 and soon after that time a hostess came for us waiting near the door and said she only had a table for 4 so would we share the table with the couple waiting near the door next to us. We weren't given a choice of waiting longer for our own table. The other couple agreed so we all sat at a small table inside near the kitchen door. To require that seating was totally unacceptable! One of the best meals we've had! Our server (we forget her name) was the sweetest Aunty! We actually went over and gave her a hug when we were done!!! She was great with our daughter, and she took such great care of our needs. As far as the food, it is ono! We had the lamb, the short rib, and the steak - all were top notch! Also we had the tako (aka octopus) as a pupu which was amazing. We finished it off with the churros and the three dips (haupia, chocolate, and Dulce de leche sauces). Outdoor seating is so nice there. Our server Donna was very accommodating, friendly and helpful. The kids orders came quickly! Breads were great as usual. Salads were very well done, love the dressing. Fish selects were all fresh and tasty. Used our special 15% off card we got from checking in for 5 minutes with the Marriott Vacation club staff in the lobby area. Donna also helped us with that, very understanding that we forgot to pull it out last minute to use. Hosting staff at the front door also was so helpful. I can't say enough positive things about Meridia. Michael, our server, was attentive to every detail, friendly, helpful, and went above and beyond. We started our dinner with the Trio Crudo while overlooking the breathtaking beach. I agreed to this dish, even though I don't like sashimi. I couldn't stop savoring every delicious morsel. Michael, hearing my praise, brought Chef Junior Ulep out to meet us. We had a lovely conversation with Chef Junior, capped with hearing his story of how he became such a talented chef. Our dinners were delectable - I enjoyed the fresh Hawaiian Snapper served with lobster mashed potatoes, my husband the wild boar ragu. Michael, of course, suggested the perfect bottle of Pinot Noir to bridge our meals. Dinner was capped off with a lovely birthday cheesecake (dotted with the lightest local honey) for me and an ice cream/espresso dessert for my husband. We were treated with another visit from Chef Junior. It was one of the most magical evenings for us, so much so that we're going back this evening. My family and I recently enjoyed a great meal here. To start, the ambiance and view are amazing! There was also a great piano player who played all evening long. The food was delicious from the fresh baked bread you start with all the way thru to the entrees (we were so full we skipped dessert by I'm sure those are great as well). The caprese salad was awesome and very advanced in terms of the presentation. For my entree, I had the pork chop Milanese and it was insanely good. Some other family members had the mahi mahi special and the wild boar ragu and they both raved over how good they were as well. This is my first time here I had seen other good reviews about this place so we thought we would try it out. We made a reservation for 6:15 and was not seated till about 20 minutes later. The appetizers where very good and the bread was fresh. The biggest reason that I gave it 2 stars is about one of my family members. She had ordered the pasta which came out cold so we sent it back. About 25 minutes later our server which was super nice came and got our check. We were not expecting that no pasta was not going to show up. It was also super windy recommended to go around sunset and when less windy which saying for Hawaii is a little hard. Overall for 300+ dollars we were pretty disappointed. read more

Our dining experience at Meridia was a total letdown. The mater d was creepy and completely lacked tact. He was from Chicago I think and made some rude comments to my wife before we were even seated. I mentioned that we were there on our honeymoon and he said "oh yeah, you're just trying for a free dessert" followed by "if you're on your honeymoon, why'd you bring your girlfriend" gesturing to my wife. It didn't go over well. After walking us to our table, he came back and just lingered making awkward conversation with me and completely ignoring my wife. It wasn't very romantic. The waiter was fine. The food was decent. The cockroach that crawled across the table while our favorite (/s) mater d was dropping our salad...disgusting. I made eye contact with mater d Larry/Kevin whatever his name was and ended up letting it slide as I didn't want to completely gross my wife out and there were no other dinner options at this point of the night. I told her later and she was really upset with me and said that she would have just got up and left. I regret letting mater d off the hook as he followed through on his promise to do NOTHING special for my wife and I on the first night of our honeymoon. I left a middling tip of 15% which I never do but I was very disappointed. It was especially surprising as it was the hotel's first night as a Westin property and I thought it would be a perfect night to try out the signature restaurant. Thankfully, we had a lovely meals at the Mauna Lani, Mauna Kea and up at Merrimens in Waimea where we had a romantic dinner but we vowed to never eat at Hapuna again. read more

The food is great and quite imaginative. We went a few nights during our stay in early May 2021 and it was easy to find appealing dishes that were different than the prior nights.
