Another great transaction today with Mr Tu, the best mechanic ever, this coming from a woman who has been going there since 2018 for problems big and small with Hondas, Volvo, Lexus, and BMW. Tu does a thorough evaluation of car, a straight up explanation of the problem, and does his best to get the best prices on parts. I trust him and he works very hard on his craft. The shop has a very friendly feel. I know he hates the European cars (as any mechanic would), but he goes the extra mile to fix them at half the price. If you just want to do the regular maintenance, like replacing oil, replacing brake pad, this is a place you can trust. However, considering the waiting time for the service is extremely long, and the prices for those services mentioned above are just slightly cheaper than most of the body shops, I cannot say I would suggest anybody to come for this kind of services. I really like this place. They did the work for about half of what Midas down the road quoted, and they were fast and super friendly. Turned out Midas also forgot to tell me that I needed my rotors replaced (they insisted I needed rear brake pads to pass inspection, but did NOT mention that I needed rotors as well...then were rude and blamed it on me when I returned and thought rear pads were all I needed... won't be getting anything done there again). While I was at Midas, I called Merrifield Auto and got a quote over the phone for the rotor replacement, and it was just about half what Midas wanted, and they are much more friendly and competent. It's always nice to run into an honest garage. I got the feeling they would be honest if I needed something else, but not upsell me. I highly recommend them as a reasonably-priced place to get your repairs done. read more

Extra stars, 10 stars! Merrifield Auto Service is incredible- these guys are the best! I got caught in a heavy down pour of rain and had to drive through a flooded street. Something caught the underside of my car, but I didn't realize that something had almost ripped off the plate covering my engine and I was actually dragging it on the road. I pulled over at a gas station and looked under my car- and yup! There was the metal plate. Merrifield Auto Service totally rescued me. I was able to drive to their garage carefully, they removed the plate, checked for damage and let me know it was safe to drive, and what it would cost to repair. These guys are just amazing! Totally saved the day, and I was able to get home safely with my 3yr old son. I am so so grateful and highly recommend them! read more

In August 2024, my niece took her Chevy Astro van to Merrifield Auto Service to have the engine examined. The mechanics told her the van needed a new engine and she agreed to have the work done. After the engine was replaced, she drove 500 miles when the van broke down in the middle of the night with transmission fluid pouring from underneath. The next morning, she had it towed to a nearby mechanic who diagnosed the problem was cause by use of an oversized clip to re-connect the transmission cooler to the radiator. The clip was so large, it simply fell off and the fluid leaked out causing the transmission and the engine to fail. That is, Merrifield Auto negligently sent a young girl on a cross-country trip when they knew the clip on the hose was the wrong size. Thank God nobody was hurt. When we confronted Merrifield Auto, they denied disconnecting the hose, provided false evidence to the credit card company, and refused to accept responsibility. We recommend extreme caution when relying on Merrifield Auto Service for anything other than routine maintenance. read more

I called to get a quote/second opinion on a service my car needed. Not only did he quote me $300 less, he called me after i dropped the car off to tell me that he test drove the car and noticed a different problem. Mind you, he probably could have gotten me to replace/fix the other problem too, but he chose to be honest and tell me it's not needed yet. I was making an impromptu trip from Virginia to Texas since there were no flights going out due to COVID-19 and was in desperate need for an oil change--every place I called told me they didn't have any availability for the next 2/3 says and also were charging me between $45-65 for JUST an oil change on an old Toyota!! I called Merrifield Auto Service and spoke to the owner and he said he can do it for me as soon as possible. The auto shop isn't the cleanest or furnished like it's out of HGTV but that's the least of my worries when I'm getting work done to my car. I was charged a flat rate of $30 with no pressure to add upgrades and I was not taken advantage of due to my lack of knowledge of cars. The oil change itself took less than 20 minutes. But what stood this place apart was how kind the owners were. I met the owner, his wife and his daughter. They offered me face masks for my trip and were extremely kind and gave helpful tips too. I have had my 2008 Volvo XC90 serviced at Merrifield Auto Service since 2014 (I used to go to the dealership for maintenance due to my wife's order! I finally convinced her that the dealer's service charges were too high.) From regular oil changes to 75 K service, from fixing brakes to replacing an oxygen sensor, Merrifield Auto Service have done it all for my otherwise dependable Volvo. This place rocks. Tu, the owner, is amazing. I had an older Saturn and I had it in for various issues like a gas tank leak, difficulty passing emissions, and rusted fuel lines. He is always fair and reasonable with his pricing. He will work you in if you just show up off the street. He even put my car on the lift as soon as I drove in (no appointment) after I told him about the huge gas leak problem I was having. He replaced the fuel pump and the fuel lines - and he had to drop the gas tank. The rate was super reasonable. I would agree with Natalie C's review below. As a youngish single woman, I trust him completely with my car. He is credible and will give you a straight answer. He doesn't try to up-sell anything - he will do the work that is needed without gouging you for other things. My dad (who has worked on my cars forever) trusts Tu and his reasonable NOVA rates. Sometimes he can take a while depending on the repair and parts needed - but that would really be my only 'criticism.' Quite literally this is a down-and-dirty review. I was driving home from New York City on a Monday night and I hit a pothole, real bad. Immediately the tire pressure sensor went off and I pulled over to the right lane, and eventually pulled over and changed the tire. I don't use my car for my work commute so I waited until Saturday morning to take it in. Walked to the shop and a few of the guys were standing outside, I explained that I got a flat and wanted to see about fixing the tire if possible, and getting a rotation. The owner told me to come back around 2:00 PM (about 4 hours later, not unreasonable for a Saturday). As I walked back down the street back home, I realized...did I give them my name? Phone number? Any way of contacting me if anything changes? Nope. Kind of my bad for not insisting but why wouldn't they have taken 5 seconds to take the info down? I called at 1:30p because I had to head out for the afternoon, they said they'd quickly look at the tire and see what they could do. Left my name and phone #. They called me back saying tire couldn't be fixed (and I sure do believe it) and quoted me two different tire prices, I picked the mid-range tire. Told them I would try to pick it up Monday since they were closed Sundays. I ended up not picking up until Tuesday. Here's where the experience kind of goes downhill....I walk in and the guy sends me to their office. It's a disaster area - filthy and cold and papers everywhere. I'm not picky if I feel like it's a good value, but they really need to spiffy up that one room at least. Owner walks over and tells me that his wife told me "It was going to be $150." When I spoke to her on the phone the week before I thought I was told $135...I was kind of in a hurry so didn't push it. But I thought it was SUPER ODD that there was NO documentation. Then the receipt I got just said $150 for tire change. No breakdown of model tire, price of tire vs. price of labor. Just $150. Sketchy. Remember the tire rotation I requested? Said nothing about a rotation and they don't appear to have been moved around. Lastly, I go to walk into my car, and the inside of my driver's side is ABSOLUTELY FILTHY. They put down a paper mat on the carpet but it wasn't enough to protect from the greasy, dirty boots. And then there was a grease streak on the inside of my driver's side door from one of the mechanics. Again, was in a hurry and it was end of day, didn't want to argue about it. Three stars because they made it quick and easy and certainly didn't upsell me. But their mechanics have to take better care of the vehicles and step up their record keeping and customer service a bit, and honestly I really don't want to go back for any other service unless I'm in a bind. read more

I always went there for fixing my car when I lived in fairfax a few years ago... i was very satisfied at that time ...I didn't go back after moved to MD, till recently I went to VA to run some errands....a little disappointed this time when I got my brake replaced.. they charge me $740 for replacement of front and rear brakes pads and rotors, the price is really AVERAGE compared with quotes from other auto shops...the service is fast, get everything done in a hour.. not so happy when lots of people smoking in the office , and people can cut u off in the line...if u are looking for typical America service, with clean and quiet waiting environment, with detail labor and parts breaks down on the receipt , this is NOT the place.. Great shop. Owner appears to be a straight up guy. My Explorer always has difficulties passing emissions. Merrifield found the problem and replaced an exhaust value for a very reasonable price. The friend that recommended me, warned me that the work wouldn't be done quickly unless I provided a deadline. That's fine... TL;DR - No communication or scheduling organization that resulted in a big load of nothing over the course of almost a week to fix the A/C. I wanted the A/C fixed, but there were no estimates at all which was understandable for something of this nature. However, several times I've dropped off my car in the morning, called during the day to follow up, then finally I would pick up my car in the evening to find that nothing has been done to it. Whatever the reason may be, circumstantial, accidental, ignorance or malicious: nothing has been communicated to me except to drop off the car in the morning. Essentially it was a big waste of time that resulted in nothing. All this could have been prevented if they simply worked on my car when they say they would (which I initially assumed when they told me to drop off my car at this date, before shop opens). Or if it was too busy, tell me to come at a different time, of course it only matters if they work on the car at that hypothetical later date. And I had to pay him ~$100+ for the refrigerant fill that resulted in no answer in the diagnosis. Other review sites mentioned nationality-related difference in customer treatment/experience, which I cannot confirm but must wonder if it was true. read more

If you're looking for an honest and transparent auto service shop, then this is the one for you! The owner is more than willing to show you the price he pays for the actual part that needs to be replaced and is very reasonably priced for labor. He is also willing to show you the damage to your car and why it needs to be replaced. The shop also does regular maintenance like oil changes. They are M-Stat around 8:30 am until about 6 pm but close at 5 pm on Saturdays. They are not open on Sundays. You see all these fake stuff that people post about this company here's some true stuff. so I had my car fixed at his shop twice the first time Mr Tu and I had an understanding I was short on money I and he had a payment plan in place nothing was on paper just a verbal every 2 weeks id get paid and give him $200 for fixing my car until it was paid off. his wife didn't like that she would from what I could tell was yelling at him in Korean she was okay then a little harassment but not really towards me. so a few weeks later I get into a car accident so I go back to Mr Tu this time there is no payment plan he tells me his wife was in his ear and she said all money has to be paid upfront I say okay that's understanding I tell then the insurance company totaled out the car and they were going to give me $3400 for me to keep the car once I tell them that he said to fix the car it would cost me $3000. sorry I forgot some details so when I and Mr TU had our verbal agreement his wife would come up to my work and ask where I was shed ask my coworkers she asks my boss she was harassing me every single day Mr Tu went on vacation that's when his wife went crazy we got into verbal arguments she hung up the phone on me several times she cussed out my girlfriend she cussed me out read more

After two repairs, the second one being a freebie redo of a leaking oil pump in which silicone was used as a sealant (look out for this common practice) instead of the gaskets I bought and provided (!!), I am not returning. Here's why: 1) After both repairs were finished and I arrived to pick up the car, both times I found the car parked, unlocked, and with the engine running. WTF? The second time easily burned a couple of gallons because I knew where the gauge was before I dropped it off. Excuses? I don't give a rat's ass. No other shop in my lifetime has ever done that. 2) After the first repair, I found green silly string all over one side of my car. Seriously. 3) After the second redo, I found some oily substance all over one side of the engine where they worked plus the underside CV boots and drive shaft. Plus it stained my new drive belts. WTF? 4) After the second repair, I immediately had a new whirring noise coming from that engine area as if a bearing went bad. That did not exist the morning I dropped it off. So something happened. Anything to do with the oily substance? WTF? 5) They don't cover your front fenders with protective cloth while they work on your engine. So expect scratches. 6) This is -- easily -- the grimiest, filthiest, most cluttered and disorganized business operation I have ever witnessed. In light of other great reviews, I suspect there is a new mechanic or two that has victimized me. I happens to many shops, where the mechanic has moved on to open his own shop. But that doesn't let Tu off the hook on supervision and business operations. As The Donald would proclaim, "You're fired!" read more

I recently moved to fairfax area. I don't yelp much unless I find a great place with outstanding service or a really bad place that I have to complain. And this is the great place. I think find a auto shop is similar to find a barbershop. You really have to try some places until you find the right one, and you know you will stick to it. Fortunately, I found this place. My 10 years old car has more than 180,000 miles on it. It doesn't make sense to pay a lot money for maintenance. But I do want my car to run another 20,000 miles at least. Since I'm new to this area, I did a lot homework. I physically visited couple high Yelp review auto shops nearby. I can tell some of them are very professional and can do high quality jobs, but their estimates are just simply too much for me. I'm still trying to find somewhere that I can receive same level high quality service with low price. And I found this one. The shop is not big, but that's not something I care. I went in ask them to look at my car and see if they can gives me an estimate. They check my car completely, after a while, they explained every problems that found so far. I can tell it's very professional and they are not trying to sell me anything unnecessary. They could clearly point out my car maintenance history, what's the root problems. The price is lower than other shops gave me. They explained why is the charge, the cost of every parts and the labor. I mean bottom line, you feel they are doing their job right. Without any fancy service or salesman, they are just trying to help you fixing your car, with a price that fair enough for you and them. After I received my car, the problems got fixed completely, it feels great when you received such high quality service and very reasonable price. While I did not get any work done today, I was very impressed with the owner's integrity and honesty. He spent time looking over the engine, the noise problem I described, and drove the car around a bit himself to see what I was talking about. He then took the time to sit down with me and tell me exactly what he saw / heard in detail, how much it would cost to replace (less than the dealer by $250), and also some insight about problems he'd seen with other 2005 Honda Civics at around 130,000 miles. While he couldn't tell me whether to buy a new car or keep spending money on this one, he gave me excellent information towards making a decision. He seemed to really know what he was talking about and he refused my offer to pay him for his time. I will definitely be going back and recommending this place. read more

I have been to this shop twice after reading the reviews on yelp and it did not disappoint. The first time I had visited the dealership and was told I needed an $800 repair, when I visited this shop they lifted the car and showed me where the suspected issue. The shop owner took time to explain why it was unnecessary to replace the part, and showed me how to check the tread on my tires and didn't charge me a penny. I appreciated the honest service and returned when it was time to replace my brake pads, get an oil change and have my annual inspection. I got all services for a reasonable price. The service at Merrifield Auto Service is top notch- it doesn't look as fancy as the dealership but its well priced and they respect your business. Today I plan to return to get my tires replaced and my car aligned and am confident I will get a good price and fair wait time. read more
