Mesa Maguey is tough to review. The front dining room is beautiful, and suggests high-end, modern Mexican cuisine. But be prepared to be escorted to the back dining room, which has all the charm and din of a school cafeteria with cement walls. The back dining room is truly terrible, but it might make sense if you have kids in tow who can happily be more boisterous in an already loud and uncomfortable room. The food, however, is really good. It's much more traditional than modern, but high quality regardless and Oaxacan-focused. Try the tasajo. Look past the fact that most dishes seem to come with the exact same rigid complement of rice/beans/grilled veggies without variation. The cocktails were excellent, as you'd expect, and reasonably priced in this day and age of $15-20 absurdities. I'll 100% be back, but only if I can get seated in the front room. read more

I just have come here on an off night because I had a subpar experience. I totally get new opening kinks- it takes a while to get your rhythm and the team was understaffed the night I came here. Pro's: Kind, hardworking staff. Everyone was busting their behinds to help customers and doing their best. Cute ambiance. The bar reminded me of Calavera (RIP). Great location, I believe where Copper Spoon used to be. Good menu selection with quite a few vegetarian options. Cons: Inconsistent service - our food went to other folks by accident and we got our entree over an hour after being seated. The chips and salsa were fine, the green salsa was delicious. I ordered the ceviche which was a generous portion and tasty, though my friend didn't enjoy it. I ordered enchiladas verde with beans and rice, but the sauce was overly salty- and I love salt. Checked this place out for Oakland Restaurant Week. I don't normally review, but one dish was so EXCEPTIONAL that I had to share. Called Chamorro, it's slow cooked beef with marrow that absolutely fell off the bone. The whole presentation and sauces were so yummy that I couldn't stop eating it and talking about it! I admit I was really sad to see Art's Copper Spoon gone, it this place is so yummy I was very quickly consoled. I've only had the chile relleno and the enchiladas but they were soooo good, and can accommodate my vegan mom (flautas and beer salad). Margaritas with fresh fruit so so tasty too! We had a wonderful happy hour here! This restaurant is such an important fixture that's come to Temescal. The food is amazing, the service was prompt, and they seem to have a lot of events going on throughout the week. The interior is a vibe, it's definitely a little louder so always a good spot to pickup if that's not your thing. We will definitely be adding to our regular rotation. Food is absolutely delicious and authentic. Feels so homemade it's as if abuela is in the kitchen hooking it up. The guacamole is the BEST guacamole I've had in some time. One of the partners in the restaurant was my server - super chill and kind, suggested I try the chicken enchiladas and the dish did not disappoint. So flavorful. I substituted salad for the rice and beans and the salad had fresh greens and multiple veggies. The margaritas were banging. I look forward to tasting more dishes on future visits. We just tried out this spot on a Saturday night a few weeks after opening. The service was awesome and the drinks were great. We had chips and guacamole (chips were especially EXCELLENT - crisp, hot, oily and salty - yum), and the tempura fish taco and beef taco. Visited this gem this past rainy Saturday after hearing about them from Instagram, and I'm so glad we did! I sat at the Bar & ordered 2 Tacos & a Beer (Happy Hour prices) the Tacos were the best tasting Tacos I have ever had. the Beef was tender, loaded on the homemade corn Tortillas. it was sweet & very filling ($9.00 for 2) than during the wonderful comedy 7-8:30pm, I ordered the Empanadas, I was so content!! One Barbarcoa, one Tasajo (like carne asada) can piping hot on a homemade tortilla and a nice green salsa. $8 Also tried the Chicken mole tamal. Oversized tamal. A little difficult to get to the good stuff as the wrapping was very pliable. Mole sauce was excellent but I wanted more. 4 stars as I found the rice bland and black beans needed some salt. Just home from this fabulous new restaurant and I want everyone to know about it and experience the amazing food of Mesa Maguey! The ceviche is so good we considered ordering another plate but had to acknowledge we were too full. Tortilla soup with chicken, mole tamal, everything is flavored so well!!! Staff were super attentive and friendly. My partner was given a glass of the smoothest tequila for Father's Day. My kid who ordered the kid's burrito but got a regular sized one, summed up our lovely experience by asking if we could please go back and eat there once a month. Sounds good to me! read more

Ok first of all, this is authentic Mexican food ( regionally Oaxacan). Everything tastes fresh, the meat is high quality, the seasoning is perfect, and everyone is SO NICE. I also am a huge fan of their salsa (especially the habanero one). Their margaritas are DELICIOUS and they have a nice drink selection. I've tried most of what is on the menu so far, and I would definitely recommend the chili relleno and the carnitas, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu, really.. If you sit at the bar the ambiance is fine. But the tables and chairs and setup just don't match the menu and price point. If you're unsure ask the bartenders for help and they will be happy to share or set up a tasting flight to get familiar. At least that's been my experience in multiple visits. They have specials often which I have really enjoyed (pork chop, moles, albóndigas, carne en su jugo and more) They also have events like special Agave spirit tastings with vendors and dancing, djs spinning record night, mexican independence day and more. Great drinks specials and the bar is quite large and overall space is big so there's usually a sense of having sufficient sitting room which is sort of rare these days.
