I've had their BBQ at the HAAS Demo Days and they picked up trays of BBQ and sides from Meshack's. I went there once around 1PM, but they sold out already. You have to beat the crowd if you want some great BBQ here. Every weekend, we drive by this little building, and every time, there's a huge line. Today we finally got a chance to stop by, around 12 pm on a Wednesday, and there were only a few people waiting. We ordered a link (sausage) sandwich & the chop'd beef sandwich. Our total was less than than $8, which was SOOOO worth it from the amount of meat given in the sandwiches. Our wait was only about 5 minutes. The lady who took our order (I think she was the owner), was so friendly. It's in a small little lot off the side of 66 and 1st Street so parking is very limited. I've heard and seen how packed it can get on the weekends, so come early. Their sign says, they close when they run out of meat. I've attached pics of the sandwiches, which come with the sauce on top. The meat was amazing, so tender, juicy, and you can taste the hint of smoked flavor. It paired nicely with the sweet BBQ sauce. Next time I'd try their spicy sauce though. I definitely recommend checking this place out, because I can easily say, this is some of the best BBQ I've had! read more

After a few weeks of trying other BBQ joints deemed the best in North Texas by certain publications we HAD to come back HOME to Meshack's BBQ in Garland Tx. It's not pretensious, foods not laid out on a sheet tray or fancy charcuterie board which seems to be the schtick nowadays. It's just good oldshool Texas smoked bbq with slices of white bread, your choice of sides and bbq sauce. Fall off the bone ribs, tender beef brisket and don't forget to add "RollUp" as a starter. Meshack's is not new to DFW like soooooo many others, some of which made the "Best Of" list but we decided we would not visit them again. Coming back reminded us what good bqq and personable service is. The people you meet while waiting makes the line made the wait time go a little faster or you might find a new electrician or mechanic. Another highly recommended place that just proves some people have zero idea what good would be even if it hit them in the face. This may have been amazing 20 yrs ago - but today, compared to the high end bbq movement sweeping Texas (Ive eaten at most of the Tx Monthly top 10-15 joints too), this isnt even dickies level que. Some people like the novelty of a take out only shack with no seating. Fine. Some people like The idea of drowning bbq in sauce ( they prob like well done steak Too). Whatever. Im actually ok With the chaos that is the parking lot here. Running out quickly isnt even that bad to me. It keeps the daily product fresh usually and not a case of chopping yesterday's leftovers into the 2 nd tier dishes like chopped sandwiches and baked potatoes. But when youre charging top dollar for mediocre beef, with none of the overhead other, much better places, have at the same price point - im out. We ordered sliced beef sandwiches, and knew the dining situation before arriving. However eating this sandwich in my truck, or even on the tailgate was impossible. It had an inch of sauce swimming in the foil. So much that BOTH bottom slices of bread were soaked through and just a wet mess. Even if i took this back to the office I would have had to eat it with a knife and fork because that sauce would be everywhere. It wasnt just a little too much. It was a ridiculous amount. But i know why. The sliced beef was DRY. Sure it had a good smoke ring and the bark had a decent flavor, but the pieces i pulled off and shook sauce off of were void of any moisture other than the actual sauce. The sauce wasnt even good. Very thin and watery. I couldnt put my finger on it but it had a sort of vinegary punch that wasnt pleasant at all. I am convinced it was thin and poured in excess to try and soak into, and mask the dry beef. Theres no other legit explanation for doing that. Serving $8 sandwiches on white bread is also a pet peave of mine. Thats what a hustler with a run down bbq trailer does in a strip club parking lot at 1:30 am. Not an established "legendary" bbq restaurant. At least a legit bun would have fended off some of the sauce for a little bit. To top it off, when we finished eating, i had to haul a gallon of bbq sauce in a paper bag off to the gas station trash and hope it didnt spill because there wasnt a trash can anywhere in sight. Not in the parking lot or out front. Which really made me question why there were so many flies around. Seriously- the flies when we ordered were BAD, but they were out in the lot too. Not worth a second trip, or a first one if you have taste buds or wearing nice clothes you dont want sauce on. read more

I always love this place! Don't go if you don't want to wait 30-45 min outside or in your car! They don't care that you are waiting! They run out of meat fast! Meshacks is exactly what it looks like in the pictures of the buildings. It's a tiny old school BBQ shack that does things right. The meat is high quality and flavorful and the prices are nearly impossible to beat. I HIGHLY recommend their chopped beef. It's obviously made from the brisket ends and I think in many cases may include much of the brisket point (aka fatty brisket) which means it's really most and extra flavorful. And it's pretty much impossible to beat quality brisket at $10 per lb. Also, don't miss getting a couple of Roll-ups. For reference, it's a sausage link (which has a sort of classic hot-link flavor) rolled in a slice of white bread. Simple, but delicious. read more

I've been anticipating to try this place for quite some time. The first time I arrived, the line was too long and they ran out of ribs. During my second visit, they had closed for the day. I would suggest checking their hours before arriving and come before opening time. They open until food runs out which happens often. The main cashier is very friendly which makes the experience pleasant. I would suggest getting the ribs which was $14 a pound. I ordered two pounds which was well worth it. The ribs was cooked perfectly. Flavor was just right where BBQ sauce was not needed. The linked sausages was delicious! The brisket was a bit dry. Might consider asking them to make them moist next time. The chopped beef sandwich was pretty good. Messy to eat but that's the main style of eating BBQ. Everything should be finger-licking good. I wasn't too crazy for their BBQ sauce since they offered a regular sauce and a spicy kind. The regular sauce seems like it had too much vinegar. Spicy sauce was a bit better. They're pretty generous in providing enough utensils. Gives plenty of sandwich bread for your order. Overall, I would definitely come back but arriving earlier next time. Short version: I received my dinner plate of ribs, sausage, and sliced beef. It smelled divine! So I figured I'd taste a rib just to sate my curiosity. Then I proceeded to get out of my car and get back in line for another dinner plate because my schedule wouldn't allow me to return two days in a row. Yes, people. It's that good. Disclaimer: I am a BBQ snob, and proud of it. I've been to Lockhart/Luling enough times that I pick on THEM sometimes if they're not hitting on all cylinders. So, what may pass as good BBQ to some might rate as animal feed for me. Those of you who have visited Lockhart and/or Luling will understand. :) With that said, I visited Meshacks for the first time today at lunch. I selected a half pound each of sliced beef with no sauce and ribs, along with a small beans and potato salad so that I could at least hit some more food groups. Worst of the lot was the potato salad; although it's ostensibly shopmade, I have my doubts. Overly sweet with only small hints of other tastes. Beans fared much better; they're at least mostly made onsite, ahd feature nice chunks of brisket throughout and a great flavor without being overly sweet. Now for the meats. My fellow diner selected hot links in addition to his brisket; the links were pretty good. Relatively coarse grind, none of that near-gelatinous texture of a mass produced product (think Ekrich), and decent heat. Unfortunately, the order came with sauce applied; I'd have like to have sampled them sans sauce. Ribs were pretty good as well, although the meat-to-inedibles ratio could have been a bit better. It was hard to deny the flavor, though; nice smoke with no heavy sauce applied during cooking. Texture was firm yet tender (contrary to popular belief, ribs are *NOT* best when they're "falling off the bone"; that means they're overcooked) and they had a nice bark. Sadly, the brisket was probably the weakest of the meats. Sliced a little too thinly, it was a little on the dry side and was a little tough. Smoke penetration was above average for the Dallas area, but still a far cry from the Central Texas greats. Having said that, again, it's better than many Dallas-area places, and certainly better than a Spring Creek or Dickeys. All in all, for this area, Meshacks is a pretty good joint. If you're still doubting a three star rating, re-read my disclaimer in the first paragraph. Meshacks is not a bad place at all, it's just that my personal bar is very high. read more

BBQ Crawl Stop #1 Meshack's is an interesting place. Literally a shack off of a one-way street in Garland, when we showed up there was a line of about 10 people or so waiting for their BBQ. It was only 12:30 and they had already ran out of ribs, apparently a few large to-go orders wiped them out. After waiting nearly 30 minutes, we received our food: Brisket - The brisket was solid. Nice smoke ring and not dry or tough. Didn't notice any sort of rub on the brisket Sausage wrap - In lieu of the rib shortage, we went with these. Just a hot link wrapped in white bread, smothered in sauce, which was a delight. The sausage itself wasn't too spicy and was red in color throughout. Sauce - The sauce had a much redder tint to it than most other vinegar-based BBQ sauces. It wasn't overloaded on the vinegar, just a slight tanginess but more tangy than sweet. Conclusion - Meshack's is a nice change of pace from the regular BBQ establishment that has such amenities as "tables" and "chairs." Just something about huddling about the back of your friend's SUV like hobos around a garbage can fire, shoving your hands into a heap of brisket wrapped in foil and devouring it as if you hadn't eaten in days. Maybe it was the long wait, either way the BBQ was great. Definitely want to go back and hopefully get to try the ribs. read more

Love it! An old mysterious shack with equally mysterious voices, noises and hands within, visible only partially via a very small smoke plated screen window. Our order of ribs, sliced brisket, sausages and beans has to be turned sideways to fit through this portal to Barbecue-ia. The mysterious hand also brought two cans of Big Red across from the other side. There is no seating, other than on your car in the small dirt/gravel parking lot, so it would be wise to take your newly gotten treasure home or other pre-ordained location. My kids and I thought the sausage was delicious; the brisket was smokey and tender without being juicy, but was also delicious. The ribs, however, were on a much higher level: smokey, salty, meaty, almost bacon-like in their addictiveness (they huge, with long meaty ribs). The beans were fine. The sauce was fine. The old school dingy, slightly spooky shack was fine. But the ribs were worth the stop themselves. Wow! read more

This is a hole-in-the-wall gem! The food is great, but you must get there shortly it opens at 10:30 a.m. if you want to walk out with some. We got there right at Noon at the ribs were out already. The Brisket and pulled pork were outstanding. Very little sauce needed from all the deliciously infused smoke flavor. The meats were tender, as well. This in not a restaurant, it truly is a shack, so expect to stand in long lines outside in the sun. Bring a folding chair, becuase the waits can be quite long. This was my first time here and I always drive by thinking I should try it out well I finally did. There was a small line at 11:30am, the service was friendly and no complaints there. There is no place to eat outside so either take it to your car or somewhere else, the food is kind of messy. Food wise: I ordered a slice beef sandwich, 1 roll up ( sausage link wrapped with bread), and potato salad. The beef sandwich was huge and definitely a good price but it was okay quality. If you are expecting great brisket then go somewhere else but it you want a ton of food at a good price then this place will do. Don't worry about being overwhelmed by the menu, because it's short and sweet. We decided on (2) mixed dinner plates. Plates? Um, nope, but a nice Styrofoam to go box will be filled to the brim with your choice of ribs, sliced beef, links or chopped beef for a cool $9.50 included are two sides which are potato salad and baked beans. Almost forgot about the 4-5 slices of white bread that accompanies the "plate" to help you sop up the sauce. Way too much food for one sitting, but leftovers are always good in my book. One very important note: Please order the sauce on the side! Both the hub and I were a bit overwhelmed by my amount of BBQ sauce, but maybe we're lightweights when it comes to sauce? Get to Meshack's early, because when they run out of BBQ, they close up for the day. Trust me, you don't want to miss it! They recently won "Best BBQ in DFW" from D Magazine, and I think I agree. All their meats are tender and full of flavor. And usually, I find the side dishes forgettable at a BBQ joint, but that's not the case here. Their potato salad and baked beans are incredible. If I have to be honest I haven't been here in a a while because the lines have gotten so long during the lunch hour. Which is a good site to see compared to the times years ago I would simply walk up and order. The BBQ is top notch best chopped brisket in Dallas easily IMO, the aroma of the smoked meats will stay on your hands for the rest of the day but, it's a sign of a really good BBQ spot. I had to go three times before I was able to get Brisket, they do sell out, and when it's gone that's it for the day. Previous to that I've had their pulled pork which was always good, but I've heard that they have great Brisket, so I really wanted to try it. Unfortunately, I was not so impressed with their Brisket; it had a smoky flavor, but it was not that tender, so it was average...good but not great. BUT...on this day, they also still had Ribs and unlike the Brisket, I was VERY impressed with their Ribs. They had a nice smoky flavor and were fall off the bone tender. They needed no sauce which, in my book, BBQ should stand alone without needing a sauce...that's what makes great BBQ. I also got some of their potato salad, which is a mashed potato version and had a sweet flavor, which I was not a fan of, but my mother loved it. This is a walk up BBQ joint, in that it is just a walk up window, no inside and no seating for eating. They have a few seats for people waiting for their orders, but this is true takeaway. Expect to wait, they don't rush and their sign says so, so they are honest that if you are looking for fast food, you've come to the wrong place. The service is EXCEPTIONAL, they very sociable and friendly and they have a lot of regulars. I recommend that anyone who likes BBQ to give them a try. read more

I got there at 11:10 on a Saturday and they still had to check if they had enough to fill my order of 2lbs ribs And 1lb of links. So this place gets lots of orders fast. I was surprised that the line wasn't too bad. Realized it was because it was efficiently run :). Very nice lady running the front. After my order they had already run out of some stuff .. so make sure you are there early. The lines move fast .. you just have to wait for your order a bit. My wait was 25 min. Awesome food!!
