Now that we have entered the pandemic zone, I don't trust eating out too much. When I come to town I head straight to Meshacks bbq spot. I trust eating there because it is family owned and operated only by the family. The food is GREAT! I'd rather stand in line and be treated like I matter, rather than drive thru these quick fast-food places and be served by these disrespectful kids, that has the nerve to serve you food at 5:00 that they cooked at 9:30 that morning, they play around, drop food on the floor and hope no one saw it. Meshacks is run by real Christian folk that knows how to run a business and keep their customers coming back for more. All I can say is, when uou got a taste for some good 'ole bbq, head over to the shack (Meshack,) that is..Now don't go over there acting brand-new, the place does not look like the Hyatt Regency, but the bbq is top notch,Impeccably delicious. Another typical visit to Meshack's this past Friday. Six people in line waiting to order when I arrived at 11am. I placed my order at 11:15am and at 11:45am, my name was called to pick up my order! It's a good thing my wife now has a smartphone so she can catch up on her internet surfing while we wait. If you can get over the wait, the sliced beef sandwich was very solid sandwich grade BBQ, with above average 'Hot' sauce. Two slices of white bread on the bottom to help keep the sandwich from falling apart after dousing it with sauce is a great idea. I really like Meshack's, but it's hard to overlook the wait. If you're going back to work, you make have to explain the sauce on your cheek, under your nails, and bib still tucked in your shirt. This is my vision of what BBQ is! No frills, no gimmicks, no "must have concoction" that the chef try to put on Shark Tank or in front of Gordon Ramsey. Order your food, get out the way, wait, get your food, get out the way, knock people out of your way as you go eat, get the "itis", take a nap if you can, tell momma dem that this place is that deal! You don't need to throw the meat a lifesaver to keep it from drowning in the sauce. You can actually taste the smokey flavor and the seasonings that were applied to the meat. I am struggling to find a reason to give it 3 stars, it was a 2 star experience but I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I ordered a brisket sandwich and beans. The beans were good but a tad bit sweet for me, a healthy dose of Tabasco helped give them better flavor. Which leaves the horrid excuse for a sandwich that was so soggy, greasy gross you could almost drink it with a straw. And I was told by my guest, "It's gross". 4 slices cheap, plain white bread. No onions, pickles, peppers. Total $21.00, you do the math $19.00 plus tax (.08125) is..... Marshalls family pack $16.00 1 1/2 pound sliced brisket (plus a little extra), pint of beans from scratch, potato salad...tasty....4 slices Texas toast grilled. sauce: vinegar based, tangy and spicy...always served on the side, like you are supposed to in Texas anyway. I sent my wife here early in the afternoon to pick some smoked bbq up for me, and let me tell you 10 hours later I had the ribs. Boy oh boy were they probably the best ribs I have had in a long time. I was surprised that this place sells out so early, its only decent BBQ. Nothing great Brisket was kinda weird, it was oddly dry and fatty at the same time. Ribs were a little dry and little heavy on the seasoning. Sausages are good, idk if they were made in house or not. The sauce is sweet not too strong or over powering. My wife went to Meshack's at 11 am, and there was a long line behind her. So get there early to avoid sitting in the Texas sun too long. I ate Meshack's under the worst possible circumstances. My wife's car died. By the time she got back, the meat was lukewarm at best and the containers were leaking. Meshacks messed up the sides, too - only 1 potato salad (instead of 2) and an extra bbq sauce. My son was crabbing at me because he was hungry, i was worried about the car (and wifey), i had had some bad business news, my daughter-in-law was recovering from an appendectomy, and everything was going wrong today. We peeled open one of the bags and I grabbed a smallish rib and chewed on it sullenly. All at once, the sun came out. My dog frolicked happily around my legs. There was a party in my head and mouth. Joy and happiness cascaded around me. Seriously - that one hunk of bone & meat changed my entire attitude. WOW was it solid platinum in food form. Crispy crust, delicate meat, flavor in every tidbit . My wife had brought ribs, sliced beef (sadly not brisket), the "whole jasper", potato salad, beans, bread, and 2 bbq sauces (hot & mild). I will review them in order. The ribs you know about. Worth killing for. Man alive. The sliced beef was okay. I've had as good elsewhere. But what can you do with ordinary beef anyway? Next time I'm going after brisket. The beef was the only thing that was improved by adding their sauce - nothing else needed it at all . The Whole Jasper is ostensibly a sandwich but is physically impossible to eat with your hands. It overlaps two separate buns so you can't pick it up even. Contains sausage and shredded meat, all perfect. Eat with a fork i guess, and bring a friend or two. It's colossal. Potato salad sucked. Rudy's is way better. Beans were Heinz pork 'n beans, straight from the can. Bread was the usual awful balloon bread that barbecue joints favor. The better the 'que, the worse the bread . I wonder if some kind of karmic balance is being maintained. Sauces were decent. But the meat didn't need 'em (except, as stated, the sliced beef). So in summary - don't get the sides. Get there early. The meat alone earned 5 stars, but it's all that matters with Meshack's. read more

I have worked down the street from them for 32 years and I still love this place. The ribs are hands down the best I have every had. The hot links are the real deal. I prefer them in a roll up( that is a whole link wrapped in a piece of white bread with some sauce for a $1.25). The chopped is great. The beans are yummy. I try a lot of BBQ around Texas, his is hard to beat. I don't leave reviews but I had to take the time to write this. I want to tell a story about this place from 20 plus years ago.I was married to a person who said they would never eat at such a dive. I took some home one evening and from that time on this person had Meshack doing all the family gathering. I have him do our turkeys for thanksgiving, all I can say in moist!!!! I knew Dallas could have great BBQ, and this proved it for me. Granted ti was close to impossible for me to find the place, my GPS wanted me to turn down an alley? Also there is no sitting, so either be ready to eat in your car or try and resist the temptation to snack out of the bag until you make it home. The brisket's fat wasn't rendered perfectly, but it was still great. The smoke flavor was truly amazing in this beef and while it was sliced poorly it still had great texture and wonderful flavor. If you can be sure to get lots of the good burnt ends or other piece that have the wonderful crust on it. Rib was also one of the better I have had. Perfect smokiness again with just the right amount of sweet. The have a spicy sauce, and boy is it spicy. A bit to thin for me, but who really needs sauce? We came here at 10:45am on a Saturday morning and it was super busy, and they opened at 10:30am! We waited about 20 mins in line before we ordered and another 25-30 mins for the food. It was a pretty hot morning and the owner came out with water bottles for everyone waiting in line and said it was on the house. That's so sweet! I didn't mind waiting because the service was good. We ordered the slice beef and da jasper and the chopped beef. I think it was pretty good and juicy. It came with 8 slices of bread as well. Have driven by this place for years and never stopped-until today. I am glad I took the time. This is some really good BBQ! I should have figured it was-if you are not serving some serious food out of a shed like that you probably aren't going to be around for long. Had the brisket and the chicken. The brisket had a great flavor and the sauce complemented this. The chicken actually stole the show for me-what a great smokey flavor there was in every bite. My coworkers really liked the potato salad but I was too busy being a carnivore to partake. Sure some may be put off by the location,lack of seating, and lack of any aesthetics but this is the kind of place that means real BarBQue to hordes of people in different parts of the country. I think the food tastes better because I kind of dig these spots in the same way I love dive bars(yes, Ramblin Rose I am talking to you). They had only been open 30 minutes, and I didn't get food until 2 hours later. There is absolutely nowhere to stand in the shade, and the only respite from the scorching sun were the water bottles that they gave out for free. The woman at the counter was SO NICE and friendly. She was great about keeping us in the loop on whether or not she had more ribs left over (a bunch of people had ordered pounds on pounds in front of me). The food: ribs were great (nice crust, good flavor, tender), the chopped beef was also amazing (coming from NC where pulled pork is king, this was a good surprise), and sauce was AMAZING. Sausage was good, but nothing special? Same for the beans. Sliced beef was a little on the dry side (I'm used to a different cook on brisket) but good with sauce. Honestly, if/when I come back, I'll just do what everybody else did and just order pounds of my two favorite meats. Pro tip: I think I saw a couple of people just drive in and pick up the order? I came upon this lil shack reading D magazine. It got voted top 10 in Dallas. This is a drive thru only place. I got to order the ribs and links. Let me say the ribs were oh so wonderful! I should have been the first to review this but I chickened out for over 20 years. I've know about Meshacks since forever but never could tell if it was open and if it was I wasn't about to stop. It's in a very awkward location and the doors are always locked even when the owner is inside. There is no inside dining or tables outside. You walk up to a window where someone will open it and speak to you through a screen. The hours are not posted and when you go they may or may not be open and they may have food or they may have run out of one thing or everything, which could be interpreted as a good thing. OK I WAS WRONG!!!! Even though it may seem scary, the people are nice and the BBQ is good. My brisket was nice and smokey, fatty and tender. Ribs were equally as good. read more

Having read about this joint as one of Dallas's best BBQ I tried it five times now and only once can I say with absolute certainty that this BBQ was really really good. Once, I had brisket that was so flavorful and tender and moist and oh so tender (I know I said tender twice). The brisket was among the best I've ever had. But sadly, they were out of ribs which proves to be a big reason why I have sworn off this place once and for all... Reasons for Never Coming Back to Meshack: 1.) Inconsistent BBQ. I've been here five times in eight days and never was the BBQ consistent in either taste or texture. Briskets (marbled cut always) on the first try was dry. Dryer than some beef jerky I've had in the past. I was tempted to throw the food away but I try not to waste food. Halfway through the meal I was wishing that it would stop or someone would knock it on the floor so it would just stop. Second time there I got brisket again and this time it was heavenly. Meat was so tender and smokey and so damn good. Out of ribs again. Third time, the brisket was dryer than last. It wasn't as dry as the first time but dry enough where I could pick it up with my fingers and bounce it off the table like a rubber band. Got the ribs... Bit dry. Came off the bone but almost had a dry pork jerky texture... With BBQ sauce it was good cuz the sauce made swallowing it okay. Fourth time, the brisket was bone dry again. No ribs available. Fifth time... They ran out of brisket and ribs and pulled pork by 2:40pm. 2.) They are always out of meat. It's a small shack so they make small batches so once they sell out they close down. Almost never have ribs. Run outta stuff usually early. The one time I had supper good brisket was 3:30pm which I figured they probably use leftover briskets from the day before. I figured later in the day is when the new brisket comes out but it's a gamble if they have anything left by 2:00-3:00pm. It's not an easy place to get to for me and parking is horrible plus service is slow (PREPARE TO WAIT ABOUT 30-50MIN JUST TO ORDER AND GET UR FOOD) If I've only had out of this world brisket one out of five times here but that one time gets them a four and a half of five stars would this BBQ place deserve 4.5 stars??? No sadly cuz its too inconsistent in both quality and availability. I'll come back if I'm somehow down the street but I will not make this a regular stop anymore cuz I don't like to gamble on getting bad/decent/good/great bbq. I want to know its great all the time or none of the time. The owners have very poor business acumen. The problems they have are more than solvable but from looking at them and their attitude about their business they don't have the desire to change. And that's why it's such a shame about this place. If this place were judged on the rural Texas, independent 'cue archetype, it would win gold just for its setup and operation. But sadly, no matter how quaint or quirky a BBQ joint may be, if it doesn't deliver with the meat all else is a wash. You've probably read other reviews and their long list of critical eccentricities. Cash only. No seating. Virtually no parking, and all too easy to get blocked in. Limited hours. Some items run out early. None of these bother me -- to the contrary, they endear this place to me. But as I said, if you can't deliver the goods it is all for naught. Meshack's isn't difficult to find but it can be tricky to get to, as it is a standalone shack -- a literal home-built hut -- in an unpaved lot on a one-way road east of downtown Garland. The menu is painted on the front, and you order from a hidden face talking to you through a small counter window. The environment smells magnificent with the smoke of the pecan wood used, hunks of which are just lying around the side. Forget "dining," we're here for the meat. I get a pound of sliced brisket and a half-pound of links, which is a good lunch and a couple of sandwiches for later. Forget the sides; everything comes bulk and with complimentary store-bought white bread in plain paper sacks. You order through the screen, pay, wait about 5-10 minutes and then go eat sitting on the hood of your car. BBQ bliss. Now the bad news: The brisket just didn't blow me away. It was good but not fork-tender, had a thin black crust and good smoke ring but tasted like it was taken out early and not allowed to finish its full cooking cycle. However, the sausage was fantastic, soft-textured with no fatty spots and a nice snap on the casing. Now for the worse news: Both meats were bathed in sauce. Granted, the dark brown sauce is smokey sweet with just enough spicy heat to balance (they offer "plain" or "spicy"), and it is one of the greater sauces I've encountered. But when you take the time to use something like pecan wood, why lose all that effort by drowning the flavors in sauce? Any taste points were lost at this point, although overall the quality far surpasses Dickey's or Sonny Bryan's. Containers of sauce on the side would have earned another star. Recommendation: Go early, park carefully. Order pounds of meat, dry, and take it home. Enjoy the 'cue with your own sides and fixin's. read more

The ribs here are DELICIOUS. Some of the best pork ribs I've ever had. Prop diddy ops. GREAT BBQ SAUCE. Mang oh mang. The brisket was good, but a little lean and not enough smoke flavor. You wait in line, place your order with the nice lady at the dark screen window and then wait with the others. She calls you when your order is ready. I put my food in the car and closed the door. I thought I had died and gone to barbecue heaven, it smelled so good. I dug in as soon as I got home. I got a combo with sliced and chopped meat. The sliced meat runs the barbecue variety with lean and fatty slices. Great smoke flavor. Chopped beef sauced just right. I've been on a barbeque binge lately, eating at six of the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ restaurants in the past couple weeks. I unfortunately have to say that this one was the worst. If I was rating based on all other barbeque restaurants, it would probably be closer to 3.5 stars, but given the high ratings and reviews, my expectations were higher. And I was disappointed. The brisket was average at best, no bark and not much smoke flavor. But the ribs, oh the ribs were the worst that I've had in a long time. Chewy, gristly, decent smoke flavor but this wasn't enough to redeem them. I may give them another shot, but it's really out of the way so we'll have to just see if I'm back in the area. On another note, the service is always friendly....but the standing in line outside in the middle of the summer sucks. read more

We ventured out to this literal shack around 1pm on a Saturday. We must've hit the lunchtime rush (or this place is always popular with the locals), because there were at least a dozen customers braving the summer heat: the order line took 10 minutes to move through, and it was another 15 minutes before we got our food. Some people waited in their air-conditioned cars since there's no seating area. The ribs are smoked through with rich flavour, even parts of the bones are chewy & delicious. Some pieces are a tad dry because they're cooked so thoroughly, but still mouth-watering-ly good. The sliced beef isn't bad either, especially since it had been well-marinated in the sauce by the time we got home. The beans are on the over-cooked/mushy side. The flavour is same as the BBQ sauce, nothing special. Their prices are reasonable and the lady who handles all the transactions through the tiny window is very friendly. Wanted to know what the buzz was and I wasn't too impressed. I like to patronize local mom and pop establishments but I've had better bbq around other parts of town. I tried the beef brisket and sausage and bother were lacking flavor and way too much smoke. The potato salad wasn't good also.
