I had the pleasure of ordering take out at this cafe a month ago while I was at home. I unfortunately could not convince my parents of how great Ethiopian food was. While I do believe the food was flavorful, I have to admit that I had better food previously. I think my 3 star review comes from the fact they gave me a lot of bread and very little meat. I was finished with my meal in record time and had way too much soggy bread left. I will say that the service was great, my food was ready in a short period of time and the woman at the counter struck up a conversation with me. The food, service, and atmosphere at Mesob Cafe was amazing. The bunna ( coffee ) was very good-strong and smooth at the same time. The kitfo was very good (spicy lamb). The red lentils and collard greens are delicious as was the sigma wot (forgive me if it's misspelled) which is chicken! This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and it will not be my last. Ordered lamb tibs, kitfo and the shrimp dish so we could share the meals. Had a variety of sides with them all. Did takeout and the lady in the restaurant was very nice & friendly when we picked it up. Everything was tasty and well seasoned. Only complaint was that the lamb & shrimp were both overcooked. We went to Mesob for lunch and split the Vegetarian plate and a salad. This was plenty of food for us both. In fact, we couldn't finish it! Everything was amazing! The collard greens with onions and jalapeños was my favorite, but the spicy lentil stew was a close 2nd. Highly recommend! read more

I just came in to try their coffee, so I can't speak for their food (yet, because I'll be back), but the coffee was delicious! I'm Cuban so I know coffee. They roast their own Ethiopian beans on site, and it was perfect and priced very reasonably. Served in an authentic clay pot, it was a treat. I look forward to my return. read more

I wish I would have taken a photo of our meals...we went out with a group of friends tonight. This was the first time any of us had eaten here. The food was amazing!!!!! I ordered #3 it was beef with tomatoes, jalapeños, and rosemary and my two side vegetables were collards and yellow peas. I loved that we didn't get silverware. We ordered, several beeps of the microwave and 8 minutes(?) later and we had a platter of barely warmed, some still cold food on our table. Disappointed. Was excited to read about an Ethiopian restaurant in the area, as the only two I'd previously known about were both in Hampton, and both fizzled. I especially miss Bahir Dar, the first Ethiopian restaurant we ever had in the area, as they had really good food and a nice atmosphere. Mesob, however, reminded me of the last Ethiopian restaurant that was open in Hampton. Friendly, kind staff. But the food... When I went to Mesob, I ordered my usual Ethiopian dish - Doro Wat. It's hard to mess up Doro Wat, right? Unfortunately, they were almost out of the dish, so they offered to add another item to my order. I asked for tibs. The Doro Wat was not chicken breast chunks. It was a chicken leg. I'm not used to this being the standard in Ethiopian restaurants. Maybe that is the home cooking style? I don't know, but I was served the same thing at Ethiopian Sports Cafe in Hampton, but NEVER in D.C. or at Bahir Dar in Hampton. Not only that, THERE WAS NO EGG! Where is my egg? Omg omg omg...no egg. I was so terribly disappointed. The tibs was dry. I ordered gomen wat and it did not have a flavor at all. Terribly disappointed. I typically love the spice of Ethiopian collard greens, just as I love a thick spicy berbere sauce. These greens were chopped and placed in a neat little circle on the injera, but when I tasted them...nothing. Same with the yellow lentils. I was soooooooo disappointed. I had gone out of the way to stop there on my way back to the Peninsula from the Eastern Shore. The injera was good. Everything else tasted like ethnic food underspiced for American palates. Typical for Hampton Roads. Sigh. The atmosphere was pleasant and cozy. I liked the area that was set up for coffee service. I really liked the place and the staff and really wanted to like the food. I may try again. Or I may just wait until I'm in D.C. or Richmond or NYC or NC or ATL again or anywhere but here. Then again, I went in 2014 or 15, so I owe them another try -___- read more

If you are looking for a pleasant atmosphere and a splash of culture on your tongue this is the place ! I didn't eat inside of the restaurant but the great customer service started as soon as I walked through the door. I was ushered to sit down at a table even though the server knew I was ordering out lol. I ordered the lamb tibs which are are so good. Just the right amount of spices and herbs and onions and peppers . Mixed with the injera bread. Also I had the shrimp sautéed with onions, tomato, spinach, garlic, and Ethiopian butter (butter seasoned with spices and herbs). This is THEE Ethiopian experience . My Ethiopian friend recommended this and I was not disappointed! The prices are reasonable and the helpings can serve at least two people! read more

My first time here. Is small in space but big in taste. Everything was freshly made and delicious. Went with a friend for lunch and ordered combination platters that gave a little tasteof a lot of food. It was relaxed and we were not rushed thought it did get busy. One person was filling all roles, but doing it well. The only downside-I live in Williamsburg. Looks like will be doing some driving. read more

We had been wanting to try A&N for a while, and had high hopes. It did not disappoint. We ordered the veg*n sampler platter for two. The injera was the best we've ever tasted, the perfect companion for the generous portions of slightly spicy red lentils, yellow lentils, greens, and cabbage with carrots. While it was all good, the red lentils and cabbage with carrots were our favorites. The greens tasted slightly scorched, and the iced tea could have been stronger, but those are minor complaints for an otherwise delicious meal. We didn't experience the slow service that many others have mentioned in their reviews. Twenty minutes from the time you walk in the door to when the food is placed on your table seems quite reasonable to me. We will certainly be adding this to our regular rotation of restaurants. read more

Ethiopian food is amazing. The taste is unparalleled. Mesob Café does it right. It is a little hole in the wall type restaurant that is pretty hard to find unless you knew you were looking for it. Located in the same parking lot as a grocery store, it is a hidden gem. My family and I come here very often and have even recommended it to a handful of friends of ours whom we brought with us on occasion. The doro wat, mesir wat, and kik alicha (sorry if misspelled!) are the absolute most delicious thing on the menu! read more

My partner and I had dinner there tonight for the first time. Mesob (A&N Cafe) was a delightful surprise! As is our way, we arrived around 4pm and had the place to ourselves as the only customers. The restaurant is simple, clean, and calming (but for the wide screen tv when when out, mercifully, minutes after we got there :-). We had a large meal which included lamb, chicken, shrimp, corn and lots of sourdough bread, All the food was delicious, hot, well prepared and loads of fun! The atmosphere was fair/good; the food quality was exceptional; and when the bill came...we were delighted. It's an inexpensive meal for two given all the food we had. I give it my highest recommendation (which is unusual for me) specifically because of the exception quality and taste of the food. We look forward to dining there again soon! read more

This is my second time to an Ethiopian restaurant. A small, neat restaurant serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine. We were there for the lunch and we wanted to try all the vegetarian food they had and we ordered the combo which have us everything veg they had...their bread was very nice and not too cold. All the veg items were very tasty and spiced enough. One item had the split pea and the other had channa dal, carrots, onions, garlic and beets...the food was close to the Indian food and we just ravaged through the dish sooner than we would normally.. Partly the reason could be that we were hungry...but in would recommend anyone to go there to get away from the regular fare. For $30 it was a very good lunch. read more

This place is a hidden gem in every sense of the word. Not only can you not see it from Princess Ann because it's tucked in the back, but it has amazing food. Ethiopian food is incredible. Especially if you like to eat with your hands! All of it has full flavors, and a variety of styles. A vegetable platter. Or chicken. Spicy. Not spicy. So delicious. I love Ethiopian food. To my knowledge this is the only Ethiopian place in the Norfolk/VA Beach area. And thankfully they are super vegan friendly. I get the four combo veggie platter with collards, smokey darker lentils, peas, and lighter flavorful lentils. It satisfies my Ethiopian craving being so far from DC. I'm so excited to have Ethiopian food in Hampton Roads! And A&N is GREAT! Not quite as good as my favorite place in DC, but very, very close! (And the injera beats it out!) We went for a late weekday lunch. Injera was outstanding, lamb tibs were awesome, the other beef dish we got was great, and the veggies were all very good. Service was great as well, and the other diners were friendly. Definitely a family atmosphere. The only drawbacks were that it's already a very small menu, and it was made even smaller by the fact that several menu items (kitfo and at least one of the veggie dishes) were not available on the day we went. This was a big disappointment as kitfo is my favorite Ethiopian dish, so I'll be less enthusiastic about returning if I don't know that they'll have it. Perhaps they could at least have a regular schedule - maybe they only have kitfo on Saturday for dinner, for instance? - so that I could plan when to return. Other than that, it was a great experience, and would be 5 stars if they offered everything on their menu. Can't wait to go back! read more

We for dinner last night. Definitely the real deal. The restaurant was clean and quaint. The staff wasn't overly friendly, but service was fine. We had one of each of their four dishes. It was pretty average compared to other I have had in Richmond and DC, could have used more spice. The tibs were by far we the best of the four. They closed at 6:00 on a friday night. Mar. 16, 2017: Very good veggies! You eat with your hands using injera to pick up the different variety of foods. They do NOT sell alcohol. The lamb was delicious but just not a decent portion size of meat. The beef was under cooked and rubbery. Place was clean and service was okay. I love to visit Virginia Beach and happen to be craving Ethiopian food. I arrived at this cafe. It is a very small hole in the wall kinda place. I ordered the lamb and though it was tasty; it was tough which is unusual for lamb. In turn, the service was scarce. The waiter never offered me more water and the place is so small no more than 8 people max was in there on Sunday. Also, when he first brought the ticket to me, it said 16.91 total. After he took my VISA card and processed the payment; the receipt came back 18.91. I didn't agree to a tip. I don't do business like that and with tough lamb, cramped corners, no extra water, and taking additional money out of my account without my permission---I will not be returning:-( read more
