We had brunch today for the first time. We all got something different, and it was all very good. The chef did a wonderful job making my fried egg, as I had specific instructions. The jelly with the biscuit was delicious! The bread that came out before our entree was very fresh, tasty, and warm! Our waitress, Paris, was very friendly and helpful. The gentleman who seated us, Ethan, was really nice and checked on us as we finished our meal. Very disappointed in the food and wine at this winery. The tour guides were excellent. We stayed at the winery which was beautiful and unique. The rooms were custom with antique furniture. We had reservations for dinner at 7:15 and didn't get our food until 8:15, we were the first group and were the last served. After reading the menu, I was so excited to try the food. We got the mushroom appetizer which came out cold and half the cheese melt and half not. I ordered the 6oz steak medium and it came out well done with two pieces of sad looking asparagus and two Luke warm carrots and bland potatoes. I don't mind paying for delicious food but this meal was not worth $32. The wine was mediocre and service was very slow. I would not recommend the restaurant but could be fun for a short wine tasting. read more

Had a great time touring the winery on July 16th with my family. The guide, Samantha, was new, but made the tour a lot of fun and she has a great personality. Messina Hof is a family-run business and the entire experience has a great feeling. We were able to taste several wines during the tour and you get to see the behind the scenes operation where they press the grapes and make the wine. The bed and breakfast looks very comfortable and I'd like to stay there on a future trip back to the area. Although we didn't get to eat at the restaurant since it's closed on Mondays, we hear the food is very good. The wines are a great bargain. Messina Hof has a location on Grapevine, which I will be visiting to get more. Overall, we were impressed and would recommend the tour to friends. (Ask for Samantha to be your guide - she's a lot of fun and seems to love the business!) read more

We live 3 hours away and went to this "resort" as a weekend getaway. We thought it was a good idea to book a 1 night stay at The Villa and a reservation at the restaurant. I mean, who needs a 1 day break from their 18 month toddler? We arrived at check-in with no one to greet us, then chose to spend 2 hours at the tasting room to kill some time before our dinner reservation. At the tasting room, we paid for the premium experience, yet treated to the regular tasting services because they ran out of "premium" tasting glasses. Meanwhile, several tables around us had the so called premium experience (above and beyond just the glass). Based on our experience, you better dress and look the part or you won't get want you paid for. We finished our so called premium tasting and went back to check-in. After some escape room clues, we figured out how to check into our room since the inn-kepper left for the day. Dinner at the Villa was great and we can't knock them for that but in general WTF.... read more

This was my first wine tour and tasting ever, and what an amazing first experience! It was amazing learning about the history of Messina Hof, and then tasting some of the wines that I hadn't yet tried with more insight and tips was great! Charlotte was the BEST. Super friendly and knowledgeable! I couldn't believe she could share so much in depth info without stumbling over her words or forgetting things. I came here with a group of seven for the Sunset Tour (nighttime tour) to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday. It was about $31 for the tour and you get to choose out of three options a full glass of wine (you can keep your glass after the tour). I chose the rosé which was delightful. There were a few other groups there during the tour too. First you sit in a room and listen to the history of Messina Hof. The guide was very informative and knowledgeable of both the estate and wine itself. He told me later that he's been working there since April. Then we visited the hotel quarters, vineyard outside, tanks where the wine was kept, and lastly the barrel room. Our last activity was tasting four different wines paired with four different snack foods. My group wanted to take photos (of course) so I asked our guide if we could go back to see the barrel room. It was locked up for the night but he was gracious enough to open it and escort us back there again and even took some photos for us. I would definitely recommend the tour to anyone and would definitely go back there again to taste more wines in the daytime or try the attached restaurant. I had an amazing time. read more

Andrea was our tour guide for the cellar tasting tour (she also mentioned it was her first cellar tour) and she was incredibly informative! We had a couple of obnoxious women in our group who kept interrupting her and she handled them with a lot of patience and professionalism. The wine was delicious, we ended up purchasing a couple bottles that we never see in stores - one being a wine we fell in love with during our cellar tour (port wine), plus a few other items from the gift shop. I am only giving the winery 2 stars because of their staff. Talk about rude. They would just stand there when we were at the counter wanting to purchase wine. After I cannot paid for my wine. Excellent food. Had salmon, lamb chops and veal. Desserts need to be improved. Ambience is awesome.

We got there and sat down. Waited for at least 10 minutes before we were approached by Brooks. He asked if we had been helped yet and we said no and he took our food and drink order. We really thought things were taking a turn for the best. But oh...were we wrong. He did bring us our first round of drinks, but that was the last time he visited our table. A lady in a black vest brought us our appetizers. We sat and finished our first glass of wine and waited for 20 minutes, all the while we are watching Brooks at the bar waiting on a girl who had just walked in and talking to her for at least 10 minutes. Then he proceeded to wash dishes and "clean off" tables (which was him sweeping crumbs off the table with a menu). FINALLY...after 20 minutes of waiting, with empty glasses, Tara came and saved the day. She is awesome. read more

Sneaky! REAL SNEAKY!! I see your rouse. You have folks get on your tour... you walk 'em through your little bed and breakfast (perhaps so they come back and stay there). Then you show 'em your vineyards. Then comes the tasting. You liquor 'em up on (what I thought was meh) wine with glasses they get to keep. You teach folks like me a few terms they didn't know before and then send them back out to the purchasing area. This is where the devil's work happens. The liquor kicks in. Again, you get to try anything you want with your souvenir glass. Of course! You'll rinse out my glass with a smile on your face because my friends and I are about to LOVE everything we are about to try. So what really happens here? You get loaded on some wine after paying for a tour (or if you're lucky you have some comped tickets), then you buy a crap load of wine because it all tastes good to someone who now thinks they know so much about wine or really wants to learn more OR is just too drunk to know what they are spending on. Price for just doing a tasting can seem a bit high, but in the end they find a way to make it worth your while. If you do the tour, they'll give you a glass. If you're just sitting at the bar, the person manning it will often give you a few extra tastes of something "you just have to try" at no extra cost. We also witnessed the following: just say you're going to buy a bottle, but not sure which one, and you can pretty much end up tasting a whole bunch of different wines. It was father's day and a woman was treating her father to a bottle of wine. They tried at least 5 before finding one they both liked and bought the bottle. The prices on the wines range from very reasonable to a pretty high, but you can definitely get a decent bottle of wine for a good price. The Paulo line is their more expensive line, and the wine is definitely some of the best we've had in Texas--if not the best. Enjoy your wine in the the retail tasting room, the wine bar, or the onsite restaurant. We opted for a bottle of the merlot (which Kelly S usually does not like) and antipasto plate in the wine bar. Very comfortable and relaxed setting, although the servers were strangely wearing berets. Interesting. PS. Don't want to finish your bottle of wine at the winery? Put the cork back in to take home. And no don't put in your cup holder right next to you--put that bottle in your trunk for safe keeping. read more

Where to start? My girlfriend & I wanted to have a special evening, we made reservations for the Messina Hof Winery. First we were seated, then it took 14 minutes to be exact to have a waiter come to us and poor us water, walk off then come back to ask us how we were doing. Then, we ordered the dinner for 2 (which is $100). We got our soup, and then 3 minutes into our soup, a DIFFERENT waiter brought our food. She said sassy "Oh your still working on your soup" And still set the food down. Our original waiter returned "Oh I'm sorry she brought the entree so soon, do you want me to wait". We said no we will take it. The soup was okay, except their were veins in the meat, and the dinner was absolutely gross, we have ate at hundreds of five star places, all over. The price they were charging for a pasta meal, in my opinion MCDONALDS is a thousand times better. Then we we couldn't even finish the meal because it was disgusting, he told us our deserts were "in line" and had to wait 10 minutes. We said OKAY. 38 Minutes later a lady waiter returned saying oh I'm sorry about that your waiter got taken over in the back..... We SAW OUR WAITER A THOUSAND TIMES WALK BACK AND FORTH TO THE NEW TABLE WITH AN ENTIRE FAMILY (We own restaurants) We know he was catering to a BIG TIP and DITCHED US on our SPECIAL OCCASION. Then she got in our face saying I'm so sorry loud like a complete $$$$$$.. In conclusion, Messina Hof winery has horrible service, disgusting food, and overcharges for a crappy meal. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. Also asking my girlfriend to pass you our soup dishes and wine glasses to take them, while we were mid eating is totally inappropriate and unprofessional. MESSINA HOF OWNERS (YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO OPERATE A RESTAURANT) YOU SHOULD GET IN THE FAST FOOD BUSINESS. OR STICK WITH WINE. I feel emotionally and physically raped by this experience, I will be calling them for a FULL REFUND. read more

We came in a small group and had a pretty good time. All the staff were very nice and welcoming. We sat in the bar and ordered a few bottles with some Appetizers which we enjoyed. My favorite was the Cabernet Sauvignon. I did not care for the Cabernet Franc. The Charcuterie plate was good, we picked some good cheeses. I really liked the Raspberry Sauce & bought some to take home. We made several purchases in the gift shop including some cute shirts, a Wine Bag and a wine holder that I had been really wanting. Parts of the place have somewhat of a dated feel to me & I think that they should bring a designer in to update the style a bit. I also thought that the pond area could be better maintained. There was a strong odor upon approach that was not appealing. The owners seem very friendly and involved in the operation. This is a fun place to come with a group of friends. read more

The bf and I went on the sunset/sweetheart tour for Valentine's Day. Nice sized group, about 5 couples? The guide was pretty informative and I thought the whole special-grapes-thriving-in-Texas-weather thing was cool. Wine tasting was last, which included 4 tastings along with food pairings. I thought it was a good deal! The guide took us to the ground floor of the resort, which looked really nice. We had dinner at the restaurant...I was pretty disappointed =( Super overpriced, mediocre food. I would definitely recommend going when it's light outside...haha...all I saw was blackness at 6:30 pm. I'd love to go back in the Spring when all the grapes and vines will be out =) read more

This review is in regards to their restaurant. I ate here on Thanksgiving 2012 and it was awful. The turkey, the soup, salad, green beans were all terrible. There were cobwebs growing on the legs of the tables. The ceiling fans were covered in a thick layer of dust. For $50 a plate I at least expect the place to be clean. My parents and I had taken my grandmother here and while she was able to eat the food, we went hungry in fear of food poisoning/every bite was disgusting. The one bright spot was our server who was very attentive and polite. If you ever eat here you will be impressed by how filthy their facilities are. I've been taken here a few times for family occasions but I will never go on my own free will and would not recommend it to anyone other than as a tip to the local food inspector. read more

We spent ANOTHER amazing weekend at the Winery B&B and have to pass along that the Chateau Briand the Chef prepared was SPECTACULAR! Savannah and Tammy served us in the restaurant and really made the evening special! Skylar and his team in the wine bar took great care of us the following evening, and Jean and her marvelous staff at the Inn not only keep the rooms clean and comfortable, but fix delicious breakfasts complete with mimosas in the mornings! I was especially impressed that they opened the breakfast 2 hours early both days to make sure guests going to early graduation ceremonies could eat before they had to leave! This has been a great experience every time we have stayed here, and I highly recommend this beautiful venue and the highly professional staff for any visit to the Bryan/College Station area! I like some of their wines, especially the ports of call they are now discontinuing. :*( I liked it bc it didn't have the punch of a true port (with a brandy added) but it does have a higher alcohol content. Dessert in a bottle. Too bad it's being discontinued. I don't live in CS anymore, but I do check for Messina Hof wines occasionally when I go places around Austin. Went to this winery years ago, but the tours were cheap and it is a pretty fun/educational thing to do in CS/Bryan (there's not a whole lot to do there, let's be honest). The vineyards and the surrounding area is pretty, and the wine is decent. Their rieslings and merlots are pretty good, some years are better than others. (If I remember correctly, their tawny port is pretty good, too.) Side note: for wannabe wine snobs I know it may look cool to others if you poo poo Texas wines and act like you only buy wine from Napa, but that's a joke. There are some really good wines from all over the world, including Texas, and Fredericksburg is not the only place that produces good wines in TX. (And if you like to say that Yellow tail is a good Australian wine for the money, that's trite. Get some new material if you want to sound like you know what you are talking about. Yellow tail is overrated.) :*) And while I'm dispelling misconceptions, yes, you can get a good bottle of wine for around $10. read more

Great place for a day trip, a weekend getaway, or just dinner. We came on a Friday afternoon and our first stop was the wine bar while we waited for our tour. The first thing that jumped out at us was how reasonable the prices were on the wine list (most glasses were $5 for a generous pour and a good portion of the bottles were in the $11-15 range). Knowing that we'd be doing a tasting after the tour, we opted for some non-traditional wines. I had The Texas Hold 'Em White which is a blend of Pinot Grigio and Chardanay. I liked it so much I ended up buying a bottle on the way out the door to take home. My wife had the Sangria which was a nice sweet/smooth drink on a 100+ degree day. The tour itself lasted about 45 minutes and brought you through the vineyards and the entire process from the grape to the bottle. The tour guide was funny and knowledgeable and we both enjoyed the tour. The tour itself cost $7 each and came with a glass to keep and 4 wines to taste in the tour room and they also let you try a few more in the tasting room as well. Great value overall for the tour. Later that evening we returned for the Murder Mystery Dinner which was a blast in itself but the food was absolutely incredible. Four course meal, each course made with one of their wines and served paired with the same wine. Biggest pork chop I've ever seen. We had looked at staying at the bed and breakfast (and after the tour somewhat wished we had) but because it was harvest month the prices were jacked up a little too high to make the stay. Just beautiful! This was our first stop on the Texas Blue Bonnet Wine & Chocolate Trail 2014 and man did they serve us well!! Happy greetings as we walked in, organized check in list, beautiful Tiffany lamps. Even though the weather was GROGGY, it was still amazing. In fact, it felt just like England! They served an incredible jalapeño chocolate and 2 reds. Both incredible. I can't wait to go back and stay in their bed & breakfast units! Small lake view in the back. read more
