MBO Barn Kit Review: A Detailed Account of My Experience Introduction In 2025, my wife and I purchased a 72' x 40' Monitor Barn kit from MBO. What followed was a deeply disappointing experience marked by misleading sales practices, inadequate construction plans, and poor customer support. I am sharing this review to help others make informed decisions and avoid the challenges we faced. Sales and Cost Discrepancy Our sales representative assured us in writing (email dated June 3, 2025) that professional assembly would cost "around $15,000." However, after purchasing the kit, we obtained five written quotes from local builders, ranging from $65,000 to $95,000. This discrepancy was never disclosed prior to purchase. The unexpected cost difference placed significant financial strain on our project. Construction Plans and Instructions The construction plans provided by MBO were fragmented and unclear. The main assembly booklet ("Monitor Barn Assembly Guide, Rev. 2024") lacked details on beam alignment, requiring us to cross-reference three separate documents for basic measurements. For example, instructions for pillar placement on page 14 contradicted diagrams on page 22. We requested assistance on September 10, 2025, but the company's representative did not arrive until October 1, by which time most of the frame was already completed. This delay forced us to redo significant portions of the build. Product Quality and Rework The predrilled holes in the main support beams were off by up to 2 inches compared to the plans, requiring us to redrill approximately 40 holes. When we raised this issue, the company's representative stated, "The plans do not matter; just make it fit." This led to significant rework and delayed our project by three weeks. Even one of their expert builders expressed discontent with the plans and product, indicating "he doesn't even reference the plans any longer". Instructional Videos and Updates We were directed to watch outdated YouTube videos ("Monitor Barn Build 2019"), which did not match our kit's design. After our complaint on October 1, 2025, new videos titled "Monitor Barn Build 2025" were uploaded on October 5, 2025. These new videos included updated instructions for roof assembly, which would have saved us considerable time had they been available earlier. The fact that critical content was only updated after our complaint reflects poorly on the company's commitment to customer support. Insulation Plans The insulation plan ("Insulation Layout, Rev. 2024") consisted of a single diagram showing a rectangle, with no instructions for cutting or placement. As a result, we ended up with insufficient material for the roof peak and had to use leftover scraps, compromising the insulation's effectiveness. Reimbursement and Non-Disclosure Agreement Our contract dated June 15, 2025, included a promise from MBO, we drilled extra holes for bolts on the predrilled frames. Upon notifying the company of our project's completion, I received an email on November 10, 2025, with a non-disclosure agreement attached, stating that reimbursement would be contingent on not sharing negative feedback publicly. This practice struck me as unethical and further eroded my trust in the company. Conclusion and Recommendations Based on my experience, I strongly advise potential buyers to seek detailed, written assurances and consider alternative suppliers with transparent practices. Confirm builder costs in writing, request recent references, and ensure that all plans and instructional materials are comprehensive and up-to-date before committing to a purchase. Christi Rodriguez has been amazingly helpful during my building project. She has worked with me through 1001 questions, redesigns, etc. She never complains when I ask her to "add one more window" or "change the color of the roof" and when I needed to up my snowload to meet building code in my area she called the building inspector directly for the right information and then sent the plan to engineering multiple times until I was happy with the final layout. She has been nothing short of incredible through this process. She has also been very upfront about pricing changes coming up soon because of rising steel prices, helping me secure my price at the last minute before the updates took effect, and working with me to ensure payment and delivery would be handled to everyone's satisfaction. She has also found pricing discounts for me everywhere she can resulting in a great building for several thousand less than other options I priced, both locally and online. After shopping the NIGHTMARE of other building companies Metal Building outlets was found Anthony was professional, met our budget we needed and went out of his way with patience waiting for our county to approve the building and then went out of his way to make sure after a minor delivery glitch that it was early on the scheduled time. After making sure our building met all our code requirements. Ive trained salespeople for over 30 years Anthony has exhibited every positive trait you could hope to deal with, Professional polite courteous and LISTENS to his clients. VERY Happy with the purchase. All Parts on inventory sheets were there. Finishing up the second shed I purchased from Metal Building Outlet in last 2 1/2 years. (30x40 then 38 x48 )The quality is the same or better on the second building as it was on the first building. I built both buildings as a one guy DIY project and needed the shed to come as a kit with all the parts. Since I am a hobbyist handyman I am sunk if things don't fit sunk. The bolt holes need to line up every time on every part and piece. I would not be able to fabricate fixes on site. When I have questions on the plans I can call Brett and he is available most days and either knows how to help me, or will research and get back with me in a day or two. Metal Building Outlet designed a great structure for us in Chesterfield, Va. The project manager, John Strine, asked what we were using the building for, listened to us and made and great 34 x 64 x 20 building. He was very patient with us and quick to respond. Even the details of deliverring the materials through a tight twisting driveway weren't overlooked. Building is used daily as a gym as our school does not have one. Includes a basketball key, volleyball net, and climbing wall. If we had another project, we'd would definitely use Metal Building Outlet again. read more

The location is in the mountains which had significant wind speed and snow load requirements. They were able to iterate their design several times to keep prices low while meeting my needs.
