At first it was great - staff was super nice, reasonable prices, and they had a decent selection of dark beers (a nice change of pace after moving here from IPA-centric Oregon). Over the past few months though, it seems like everything has changed. Summer *just* ended, so of course the darker beer selection slimmed down, but finding a decent affordable beer is hard here. Anything that looks like it would be good is $20-40 for a 4 pack (no exaggeration). I'd rather give my money directly to the brewery and drink at their bar for those prices. The older staff all of a sudden questions me on the validity of my age and ID, despite how often I come in (I'm 32, have smokers lines, and covered in tattoos - obviously I look over 21). They aren't nearly as friendly anymore. They have one beer that's $8/each for a standard sized can, but for some reason it's more expensive to buy a 4-pack at $40. I brought this up to a woman behind the counter, but she didn't react to it at all and didn't seem to care. I don't know what happened because I really liked this place, but I've had enough weird experiences lately that I'm going to start going elsewhere.

They served tastings of a few brands of whiskey and wine, along with pie; all were sample-size, 1-2 ounce servings. Everyone attending and the employees were cognizant of the packed space and moved around accordingly, as the store doesn't seem equipped to host large crowds. I did purchase some liquor not being sampled, and the employees were beyond helpful in recommending what liquors to consider in accordance to my diet requests. I appreciate such a spot as this that welcomes interacting with the community.

We were directed to Metcalf by someone who worked at Sprouts nearby. I guess you can't buy wine in the market in Overland Park which is a bit of a pain. Nestled into a busy shopping center at 95th and Antioch this neighborhood liquor store is super convenient and has good selection for its size. To me, MDL is kind of a hybrid between a very small mom and pop and a mega liquor store like total wine. You're going to find a good selection of everything but you may not find EVERYTHING if that makes sense. The prices are similarly marked - cheaper than a super small place, but again hard to compete with a mega store. I go here mostly because it's close to my house and has decent selection, is local (I think!), and has friendly staff. They also usually carry seasonal releases from local breweries and distilleries which is nice to know you can count on them to have new releases in stock when they come out. Overall this is a solid place and I'm super grateful to have it in my backyard.

The store had more than doubled in size and features countless wines in every price range, a bevy of microbrews (that's beer to all of you Bud Light drinkers), shelves chock-full of spirits and dozens of those cute little airplane-sized bottles you can shove in your pockets to prepare for your in-laws' mandatory Sunday dinners. Separate in check-out but kindred in spirit is K7's party shop, where you'll find a well-stocked cigar humidor, cigarettes and mixers galore. You'll also find everything from corkscrews to beer pong balls to keep the party rolling -- literally and figuratively. Have a liquor related question? Don't be shy. The helpful staff at K7 can tell you the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and which tequilas make the best margaritas. They'll even explain why there's no chilled red section with a straight face. And finally, the store is open til 8 on Sundays now, giving you a whole extra hour to wrap up your weekend drinkathon.

They had what we needed, and while I didn't spend a ton of time shopping around, it appears the selection here is more than enough. Tons of beer, lots of wine, and all the other liquors out there. The staff seemed to be in good spirits (no pun intended) and it's easy enough to get in and out since it's in a large strip mall that sacrifices almost all aesthetic appeal for an oversized parking lot. All in all, I'm sure the nearby residents are glad to have this spot here and it was just fine what what we needed.
