It's New Years Eve and I decided to come here to pick up a couple bottle of champagnes. This location is close by and is not as busy or hectic as Total Wine which I normally go to. I've been visiting this MDL with some frequency for around ten years so it's about time I leave some feedback. Nestled into a busy shopping center at 95th and Antioch this neighborhood liquor store is super convenient and has good selection for its size. To me, MDL is kind of a hybrid between a very small mom and pop and a mega liquor store like total wine. You're going to find a good selection of everything but you may not find EVERYTHING if that makes sense. The prices are similarly marked - cheaper than a super small place, but again hard to compete with a mega store. I go here mostly because it's close to my house and has decent selection, is local (I think!), and has friendly staff. They also usually carry seasonal releases from local breweries and distilleries which is nice to know you can count on them to have new releases in stock when they come out. Overall this is a solid place and I'm super grateful to have it in my backyard. read more

My girlfriend was accused of having a bottle in her purse while leaving the store. Tyler was beyond rude. There's a way to do a security check without seeming like you are racially profiling. What he claimed "well I hear bottles" when in actuality what he heard was my keys against my metal water bottles. I was told not to come back even though we did nothing wrong. I've been shopping at this store for years as it's in my neighborhood but I will never spend another dime supporting ignorance and an inability to admit a mistake. read more

We've typically had great service here but today it was terrible! Employee told me he didn't know if they carry a certain beer but said "if we do it's over there somewhere". Huh? Guy ringing me up was Incredibly rude. We normally buy a couple cases of wine but today I only spent $100. If you are going to work there, please be helpful & courteous. Two times in the past week I have went to check out and the price that rang up was different than the price tag on the shelf. Today I tried purchasing 4 single cans of Boulevard Space Camper; the price tag on the shelf was $1.59 which seemed normal because I have paid this price at other stores. They rang up 44% more expensive. The lady at the register and I walked back to the fridge so I could show her the price. She contacted a manager to see if she could charge me the displayed price; he would not honor it. He proceeded to take down the tag. I purchased something else, since I was already there, and while doing so I check the other item I tried purchasing earlier in the week; the price had not been corrected. Seems to be a trend as I'm not that lucky. This is disappointing since I am new to the area; I'm sure there is another store close by that runs a more efficient and honest business. read more

Easily on the upper echelon of liquor stores in the Kansas City area. Especially for those who live in the KS hemisphere, it can often be difficult to find rare-ish liquors without venturing to the dark side (Missouri) or going to Gomers on either ends of the city. Luckily, Metcalf Discount Liquors provides a blessedly wonderful alternative for the JoCo-ers of Yelp. First off, their wine selection is over the top. They've got an entire HALF of the store dedicated to upper-tier wines, with a full row of ONLY Rose's. I couldn't find the specific Rose I was looking for, but the guy at the checkout line looked it up and offered to order it in- an offer I'll gladly take any day! They showcase an expansive collection of bourbons, whiskeys, tequilas, and just about any type of hard liquor you can find, including small batch producers and whiskeys you see on "best of" lists. However, their beer selection is probably the biggest disappointment here. Although their selection is pretty standard, I do appreciate them offering Boulevard beers in larger pack sizes that rival Costco prices. They do have a small collection of imports, including the Iron Maiden beer. WHO CARRIES IRON MAIDEN BEER?! Haven't seen that in a store in the entirety of my existence. Had to pick up a bottle and went full-on fanboy for a solid 5 minutes. Certainly makes up for their lack of domestic variety. Metcalf Discount Liquors is no Specs (for the Texans who can relate), but it rivals, if not exceeds, what Gomers is able to offer. They offer a touch of Midwestern hospitality that you don't always find at liquor stores. All in all, awesome experience. Definitely check it out if you're looking for something rare or feeling venturous for something new. read more

Tip: Check out the front of the store; after I bought my 3 beers (see uploaded pictures), I found the $1.00/bottle bin. That's pretty cool, if you're looking for an inexpensive couple of beers. The selection of beers they offer is over the top. One of the best things in life is exploring new breweries!!!!!! This visit, I sampled 3 beers from Anchor Brewing Company out of San Francisco, CA. *Buying while black* last month I made a large order @MDL for a few thousand dollars worth of liquor & beer. We got the U-Haul loaded up and went to pay and because my bosses first card was declined the guy helping us (high strung) ran to his co-workers and stopped them and made them unload the whole truck told me that me and my wife seemed "fishy" and proceeded lot embarras us in front of the store and we have lived and came into that store for the last 12+ year mind you, he didn't even take a second to let me explain or find out what's going on. I could have just put it on my card and had my boss pay me back but he was so in a hurry to make a scene I just let him continue with that. It's not uncommon for a purchase of that size to be flagged on a card so the fact that he went to that level really disappointed us and worse the co-workers stood by and watched which makes them just as bad because no one stood up for us and let this embarrassment go through. When my boss arrived (White guy) he paid with a card, then had to reload everything back up and we were on a time crunch for a large NFL tailgate we hosted and the same guy (middle age, beard) (they know who he is, doesn't seem to be his first time in this positio) Gave us a no smile half attitude apology and didn't care we came to do great business with that company and told us they have had problems in the past! We all know that's code for "we're going to try and justify why you are being treated like this". This company will now miss thousands of dollars in return customers because of the staff they provide and that might not mean a lot to an employee but I know the owners would have appreciated that amount consistently coming back! Horrible experience. If you black while shopping here you might think again it's almost 2024 and we are not going quietly about these issues!! read more

This is my favorite liquor store! Just freakin' amazing! Why? Maybe let's just start with a list: -Fairly extensive wine selection of varying price ranges and varieties to make any wino happy! -Ability to build your own 6 pack -Rum, rum, rum, rum! Holy crap, people! An entire row of nothing but various types and flavors of rum! Who does that? -Overall selection: If they don't have it, probably nobody else in the area does, either! -Clean store that is laid out well so you can get in and out in a hurry if you like. -Friendly and helpful staff -They sometimes even have tastings during the day on the weekends. It's totally MDL's fault that I now know that I love limoncello. Probably wouldn't have ever known that if I hadn't tried it there. MDL is a biggish liquor store near 95th and Metcalf. It's an excellent source of really old beer, not aged beer, old beer. You can find out of season seasonals littering the shelves. The staff pairs malaise at their situation with scorn for the customer. They get 2 stars because they do typically have what I'm looking for, the store is clean and they have pretty good specials from time to time that they advertise on their Facebook page (which isn't the norm for a liquor store, especially in Kansas). MDL is an option if you know what you're looking for, won't need any help and possibly pay the least amount possible. Odds are, though, you'll feel a little dirty about yourself after visiting. read more

This store always maintains an excellent and diverse stock of beer, liquor, cordials, and wines. Megabeers and craft beers are both represented with singles, six packs, and cases available. Whether you're looking for cheap, Very Special, añejo, or whathaveyou, they have you covered. And the hours are great. Staff is friendly. Big fan of this location on 95th Street in OPKS. Always a solid number of beers, liquor, and wine. They have a great selection of craft beers (in their own coolers on the west side of the store), international brews (northwest coolers), and traditional American brews (north coolers). Also a great selection of local beers and liquors. The wine "room" provides an excellent selection of both local, domestic, and international bottles. You'll be hard-pressed to not find a bottle you'd like to try here. Staff are friendly, lines are always short, stock is always readily available. A great one-stop shop for your drinking needs. The con is having to purchase non-alcoholic items next door. This is a Kansas thing, not an MDL thing. I wish KS would get their act together and just allow everything to be sold in the same store. Nothing but great things to say about this place. They have multiple check out lanes, so there is rarely a line. The liquor and beer selection is extensive. But, the winner here is the wine. They have a separate wing to the store that is huge and has an awesome selection. Different vintages of the same wine are common here, which is fantastic. From the minute you walk into MDL you are greeted by the staff and the superb customer service only begins there. If the staff see me eyeing a shelf for a bit they saunter over & ask if they can help me in anyway. Whether it be flavor of a wine or just determining something new to try they are there. They never try to sell you something expensive to try that you weren't looking for in the first place either. They have a very broad selection to chose from, unlike some of the shops in the area. Bonus they tend to have amazing prices. If you "Like" them on Facebook they always alert you of new savings. Worth going to. I was at this liquor store last Thursday evening to buy wine and beer for a party this weekend. I was very disappointed at the 3 guys working there and their lack of customer service. No one greeted me when I walked in, and after about 30 minutes of looking through the great wine selection, no one asked if they could help. I did walk up to one of the check out guys and ask where a particular type of wine was, and and he just pointed to a different section. When I went to check out, the guy dropped one of the bottles and broke it which got wine over the other bottles. I spent over $100.00 and no one asked me if I would like help putting it in my car. While they have a fantastic selection of wine, the guys working there need customer service training. read more

One of my favorite liquor stores! Their selection is HUGE! The store is always clean, staff is always friendly and helpful, and I can always find what I'm looking for. Their prices are great, they always have items on sale, and it's organized in a pretty customer friendly way. They let you build your own 6 packs of beer which is nice for any beer brat. Their wine selection is extensive with both the budget friendly varieties and great finds for wine lovers. They bring in people for tastings of various products. I always like trying something new! Overall, if you like trying new things and want a guarantee that they'll have what you're looking for, this is your liquor store! Oh, and I'm not sure if MDL's the one to give credit to, although I would think so, but there's a Ripple Glass recycling bin right outside their store! So, you can get your liquor and Go Green when you need to dispose of the bottles! read more

Tremendous wine and liquor selection if that's your thing, but a bit of a bummer if you're a beer fan. You need to be vigilant about checking dates. More often than not I've gone to grab a favorite brew only to find a six-pack that is 4 months old. I like that they offer a mixer-sixer cooler (they could offer more variety but it's still better than a lot of the liquor stores around town if you can't make it to Bier Station), but the same quality control issues persist. read more

This liquor store has just about everything there. A friend and I are stocking up as my 21st birthday is very soon, so we decided to stop in and check out the selection. It was great up until check out. The lady at the check out counter had short brown hair and glasses and was rude. She didn't greet us, just started checking out the items. I was looking at the tiny travel bottles and she rudely asked "Are you 21? Then you can't point or touch it." No, but do I have to be to look at and touch a tiny bottle of liquor? No, it's not against the law. I just can't purchase it yet. My friend joked that I'd be 21 in a few days and she didn't even crack a smile. She told us to have a nice day in a very robot like way, like she was forced to be there. While the store and the selection are great, I just don't have a reason to go back there now as it's not close to my apartment and the lady there really turned me off from coming back. I give it 3 stars for the fact that most of the employees there are very nice usually, it's well stocked and clean, but that one lady was very rude and I don't think I'll be back there for a while. read more

All good except or one guy-the older gentleman with the gray hair and glasses working the front not only mocked another employee but mocked me as I asked him for help in selecting a purchase. As we got back to the register I'm pretty sure he leaned over as I was checking out with this very sweet lady to another person and made a snide comment. Both of those two smirked, adding to the ridiculousness of the situation. The woman with short brown hair who helped me ring up my purchase was so sweet and even giftwrapped my bottle of wine for the event I was going to after. And as a sidenote this woman was not the one was supershort hair-she had more of a bob. People are helpful if I have questions, but they let me do my thing if I don't. I'm not a big drinker, but use wines to cook with, and they have a decent selection of single-serve wines so I don't have to buy a whole bottle and end up wasting the rest of it after cooking with what I need. read more

Totally disagree. Worst service in the area. They have "Ibotta signs posted all over the store but their receipts don't show the full date so the point is worthless. Ask about it? I had an entire car full of liquor, and was about to pee my pants, so I asked the manager in the sweetest way if I could use the bathroom. She made a horrible face and said very rude and snotty "no. No public bathrooms". If she had said it nicer maybe it wouldn't have rubbed me so wrong, but dang. Uncalled for. Left my cart full of alcohol ($150+ worth) and went to a different liquor store. Last night I was at MDL Liquors buying a bottle of wine like I do often. MDL has always been a nice/safe place to purchase my adult beverages. Yesterday however turned into one of the most horrific incidents I have ever encountered. I got to the register and was met by a rather unfriendly clerk. I asked her a simple question about the wine I was purchasing and she was very dismissive with her answer. I then PAID for my alcohol and proceeded to the door. An older gentlemen came right up behind me and asked me to step outside. I don't know about you but a stranger asking you to step outside nowadays is asking for an abduction or something of that sort. I told him, "no you can talk to me here," I stayed standing in the doorway of the store. I was not going to step outside, NOR did I know who this guy was, who was getting in my face. He proceeded to tell me he saw me put a bottle in my purse. "ARE YOU KIDDING ME" I said aloud. I was SHOCKED at the fact that some random person (claiming to be the manager) would act so crass. I immediately was pissed. One, for the way he approached me and two, I did not put anything in my purse. I proceeded to open my bag right in his face and show him. Meanwhile the women who had helped me said nothing, just stared. I was livid to say the least. How dare you treat a PAYING customer like that. Trust and believe, I will NOT be shopping at this establishment ever again. When people ask of my experience I will be completely honest because that was very uncalled for. I give you a 1 star and you might want to do some "manager" training for your staff. This is certainly one of the better selections for wine and spirits. I can almost always find what I'm looking for or at least something cool or new to try. There is always one person there who can answer any liquor or wine questions I might have. I do wish their european wine collection was a little more extensive, but the midwest isn't as big of a consumer so I understand the need for more California and Australian wine which is more popular, but they do have some great bordeaux and spanish wine options. read more
