Last week (without warning) my older Macbook Pro completely died. I couldn't get past a flashing question mark on a black computer screen. I've had help in the past from a trusted Mac guy but when I described the screen to him he said: "Oh oh, that's serious and out of my purview". He kindly gave me three recommendations for where to go. Thank goodness for yelp because one of the places he recommended (the one most convenient to me) had a lot one-star reviews! (I can only think it had been a while since he worked with them). Metro Computerworks seemed like a good option so I called them got an appointment and left the computer. I was very worried about this situation (even though I have a 2nd working computer) because THIS was the computer that had a bunch of "Photo Booth" photos of me and my (now departed) Maine Coon cat on it. (I know, I know....if I liked them so much why hadn't I backed them up? I couldn't be sure that I had). I desperately wanted those photos back. I even sent Metro computerworks a 4am email about what I perceived as a problem with some information I had given them. Gene wrote me back just a few hours later and said no worries, he had installed a new hard drive and that he'd restore everything he could. In short order (literally a day 1/2) everything has been fixed better than ever, thoroughly streamlined and cleaned up (including my beloved photo booth photos). When I went to pick it up he even nailed down some extra things (like making sure I could connect to Photoshop). I'm sure he's very busy and he did not have to do that, but I can also tell that he is conscientious and likes everything to be right. That's the kind of guy you want working on your computer. There is no good time to have your computer crash. It sucks. Hard. Being somewhat tech savvy, I decided to tackle our most recent setback on my own. My wife's 2010 macbook pro would not boot, and I was determined to get it working on my own, especially because I had just recently resigned from my job. With little income and plenty of time, I set forth my efforts and spent a couple of days trying to salvage the computer. Obviously, because I am writing a review for a computer repair store, my plan didn't work. After reading positive Yelp reviews, I finally gave in and contacted Metro Computerworks for help. They were friendly over the phone, and I told me to bring the computer in at my convenience. Fifteen minutes later I was walking into the business, macbook in hand, hanging my head in shame because I couldn't get it to boot. They were supportive, listened to my problem, and accessed the hard drive in no time at all. They were able to salvage all of our data, including 5 years worth of valuable pictures. Furthermore, they installed a new hard drive I purchased at OfficeMax, all for 60 dollars. When we showed up the next day, they booted up our computer without difficulty and sent us on our way. When we got home, the computer wouldn't boot up again. After fiddling with it for a bit, it would only work intermittently. I called the owner of Metro Computerworks, and he said that since he was out on an errand, he could pick up the computer from our home. He called me later in the afternoon and suggested that it was likely the cable from the hard drive to the logic board. Instead of pressuring me to buy one from him and have him install it, he gave me links to some youtube videos and told me where I can buy one to install by myself. So here I am, typing on my wife's macbook after putting in a new cable. Metro Computerworks saved a significant amount of time and money. Hoping not to have to see them again anytime soon, but glad to know they are there if need be. read more

When my husband spilled his beverage in his Mac, we took it to Metro since they were local and highly recommended. Unfortunately, it had been a few days since it happened, and our Mac could not be saved. We weren't sure what kind of computer we wanted to replace it with, and they were patient until we made a decision a few weeks later. We brought them a new PC to download our files to. They walked us through our options, and helped us decide what we should download in a cost effective manner. They recycled our old Mac and pulled out our hard drive in case we wanted to download additional files later. I took my computer in after it being broke for quite some time. I told the guy working what the problem was, being that it would turn on, but then turn right off. He told me to leave the computer, and he would call me to let me know what the problem is. I think it had been about a week or more since taking it in that I never recieved a phone call. So I called, asking about it the reply I got was "Oh yeah, theres nothing that can be done for it, its a motherboard issue that cant be fixed." My mom decides to take it to a friend of hers who works on computers out on the coast. I selected this service based largely on their ability to do the work remotely. My issues were clearly with software, and these kinds of problems can be worked on remotely, so why drive across town? They worked on the older of my Windows 10 laptops, one that has been gummed up, slowed down, and horrendously clogged with crapware. The other, newer laptop was just acting weird, and while I was on the phone with them scheduling the remote service for the older machine, they made a few suggestions about things I could try myself on the newer one. Their suggestions for the newer laptop worked, and all is well now on that front. After the service, the older machine is still slow, but much better than it was before. Convenient, effective, and reasonably priced. Give them a try if you think your machine needs a tune-up and don't feel like fighting Portland traffic to get to a shop. read more

I normally go to 12:01 computer repair but decided to try something new. Justin's been really busy lately so his turn around time has kind of tanked. I just don't want to wait five days to get my stuff back. First impression - this place is filthy. It's more dungeon than retail and, if I ever dropped food on this floor, I would just forget about the five second rule and throw it away. Second - there's hardly anyone here and the weird thing about it is the turn around time isn't any faster than at 12:01 and sometimes, even at their busiest, 12:01 still gets me my computer back faster than these guys. They're pretty slow for a place this quiet. Third - WOW - a hundred bucks for a tune up? I decided to come here because I pass it on my way to work everyday and I certainly should've done my research first. This place even cost more than other shops. I stopped in one afternoon after the wireless internet stopped working on my old PC, and they were able to check it out right away. At first it seemed to be the wireless card (if it had been, they had a spare of just the one I needed), but it turned out to be a virus. I left it overnight while they ran a bunch of updates and scans, and returned the next morning to pick up a computer that runs better than it has in ages.
