I have used these guys a few times in the past and they were always helpful and had reasonable prices for their services. But since the pandemic their prices have really become unreasonable and their online only appointment paradigm is pretty dismal. The fact that they now charge $250 minimum for labor regardless of the issue is a nonstarter with me not to mention they will take $65 just to 'check you in'. I completely forgot to review from a few months back but topnotch repair and replacement of parts and optimization! My sports car of a custom build that I use for all of my 3D work literally caught on fire from faulty cooling wiring and was terrified I fried everything. They did the exact replacement I needed to the damage, diagnostics, and optimization. It was a solid price for everything they did. I didn't lose any data and all other equipment. Although I had to drive from Beaverton to their shop in SE Portland, the trip was truly worthwhile. Review of July 2023: Portlanders are indeed lucky to have 1201 Computer Repair in their backyard. They are helpful, professional and charge reasonable fees. Chris & Blake were extremely helpful in troubleshooting some issues with my PC. This place is the best. We hadn't been there in years but had good experiences before so when my macbook space bar took a sabbatical, I headed over to Hawthorne. It turned out to be a more invasive keyboard panel repair due to the way the hardware is designed, but they kept me up to date the whole time on the issue, the fix and the likely cost. I just wanted my space bar to work again but I wasn't expecting to pick up a brand-new feeling computer. I bought my laptop used so I didn't realize I had never had that new keyboard feel. I've had them help me with the power jack for my laptop (quickly and completely repaired) and I took it back to them when I started hearing the fans whine when I gamed. They cleaned it, redid the thermal paste, and said it should be fine, but if I wanted the fans replaced to bring it back and there would be no labor charge. I took them up on that after play-testing the system. These folks are good, they're honest, and I expect to get another 2-3 years from this machine. Absolutely grand service. read more

Microsoft is dropping support for Windows versions older than Windows 11. They have strict requirements for what hardware will run Windows 11. I've been using 1201 Computers for more than 6 years to clone three existing PC to a new ones keeping programs, data, and settings. Had a terrific experience here. My Macbook was the victim of the Great Hot Tea Disaster and wouldn't turn back on. I brought in here, bracing myself for the worst news that it would be irreparable or so expensive that repairs wouldn't be worth the trouble. They gave me an estimate of two weeks or longer... it was two weeks and one day. Outrageous! (Joking.) It required some pretty extensive fixes but still came in under $400. They texted to ask if I approved the additional labor and once I did, had it fixed in less than a couple hours later. Everyone was easy and cordial to work with, and the laptop seems to be working perfectly. I'm very grateful! People (myself included) usually just go on Yelp to complain, but their five-star ratings are completely deserved. read more

I had a great experience with 1201 computer repair recently. The 10-15 year old external hard drive I have used to back up all of my photos recently stopped working. In a panic, I called pretty much every dedicated data recovery company in the area and to my dismay found out that they all charge $500-$1000+ and none are local; even though they have local addresses, they ALL follow a model where you drop off your device and they send it away not only to fix but just to get a quote. Luckily, I found 1201 Computer Repair! They're a local company who repaired my device and recovered all my data at their shop on Hawthorne. They were very communicative and the repair was speedy. Best of all, it was under $300 including a new external hard drive! Such a bargain compared to the national knock-offs and great value considering their top notch customer service. These guys are incredible. If you're looking for a spot to get your stuff repaired, stop your search--this is it. My laptop started swelling a few months ago and the touchpad was bulging so much that it was unusable and my lid couldn't close all the way. The fans were buzzing and shaking. I made an appointment online, which was effortless, and brought my laptop in the next day. They said it was probably a dangerously swollen battery and a fan malfunction. I waited about a week for the ordered parts to come in and Matt kept me updated throughout the process; once the parts were in, it was fixed within a day or so. When I came in to pick it up, my laptop looked good as new and the touchpad worked SO well--it had issues out of the box to begin with and didn't click very well, and now the clicks are prompt. They even thoroughly tested everything and made sure temps were looking good. A whole battery replacement and fan replacement only cost me a little over $100 on top of the standard labor fee. I would gladly 100% recommend these guys to anyone in the area, amazing value for what they do. read more

They ended up not being able to repair it, and gave me my beautiful laptop back in broken pieces! I then brought it to comprite and now they are saying that cannot reboot it to windows! LONGER VERSION (aka the "TL;DR" version) - This turned out to be a bigger problem than it appeared, and my hard drive had begun to die anyway. 1201 rescued me from this situation ... and I have also slowly repaired my relationship with my cat. The email I sent to 1201 is below: ---------- "So, I look over and see my cat sitting on my computer. No big deal ... usually. This time, he somehow renamed the hard drive, to a very long name of all special characters. Because the file name is so long, I cannot access anything stored in it anymore. I tried to change the name but it will not take any name changes I try. I have tried the below steps and it did not work. When I try through that method I get this error message: "Try using a name with fewer characters, or with no punctuation marks." No matter what I use. 10 Stars !! These guys are magicians. I have a beloved 2011-vintage Mac Air (which the guys there seem to love, too). One day I glanced over, and the whole keyboard had bulged up, bowed up. The trackpad was unusable. The battery was shot, and so swollen it bowed-up the top case. But the guts and the memory were working (using a plug-in mouse). I took it to 1201 Computer Repair, thinking they would tell me to man-up and buy a new laptop. But no. They thought they could fix it. And they did, in less than a week. Not only did they replace the battery, finding that the case returned to it's previous shape, but they found a deteriorated SSD memory chip, replaced that, and installed a modified very modern operating system. The computer is now perfect, faster than it has even been, even out of the box. It looks brand new. And the price was extremely reasonable (a fraction of a new Apple laptop). Their communication was excellent, even calling me! (Who calls anybody any more?) This company is superb. I would trust them with any computer repair project. read more

Came to 1201 based on reviews, and because it was close to us. We had an external hard drive that had stopped functioning and started beeping, happening at a very inopportune time. Time was of the essence, so we were more than willing to pay an expedited fee. The folks at 1201 were able to start diagnosing it immediately. I'm not saying they can give this kind of service every time, but within five minutes, they knew that the issues were beyond their abilities, and referred us to another shop that could do the work. Why five stars even if they couldn't fix it? Because they were friendly, knowledgeable, understanding, and fast, all of which we needed desperately. These guys are the absolute best! They replaced my failing SSD drive and cleaned the machine, and had it running smoothly. After a few months, I noticed the computer fan on this Dell Inspiron 5579 laptop was running a lot. I used an app called Pulseway on my iPhone to check the temperatures and they were a bit hot. I called them and they said bring it in and we will double check everything and probably replace the SSD drive "just in case." They did all that and more. They added some heat-sync pads and have it running at a much lower temperature than when I brought it in. Even though they could not duplicate the temperature issue, they replaced the drive. It is running like a champ and a bit quieter to boot. I highly recommend them. Not only are they honest, but they are really nice people. read more

1201 Computer Repair worked on my 15-inch, 2015 MacBook Pro in August of 2020. They were GREAT TO WORK WITH AND THEIR WORK HAS BEEN TOTALLY GREAT. They improved cooling, replaced my SSD with a 1 TB SSD, replaced my speakers, reinstalled files from my back-up and updated all software. They did an in-depth tune up of this computer. This has been my main computer since then, and it has been working fantastically well. Note they did all of this in-depth work and also replaced my SSD with a 1 TB for a grand total of $675 ($425 of which was the SSD). Direct and to the point. I brought a lost cause into Justin today. Dead laptop, was hoping he could breathe life into it. Alas, the laptop was beyond hope. But Justin took the time to diagnose it, and was very straightforward about the issues with the system. In the end, I retrieved the system and went on my way. Justin would not accept payment. As a professional tech, I'm pleased to find someone of Justin's skill level who is still honest and direct. I've got over 18 years in the biz but don't do laptops and dealing with Justin was a refreshing change over some of the techs I've worked with over the years.
