From California and was visiting family in Alabama (Trussville). The only food options we had seen were Waffle House and Cracker Barrel. My cousin mentioned Metro Diner, so glad she did. Service was excellent, atmosphere was cheerful and upbeat. Menu selection was intense. I ended up with the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich and sister had fish and chips. I love this place!!! Out if the 40 plus reviews I have done, I was the most pleasantly surprised by entertaining a meal at the Metro City Diner. This was my first time at the new location, and I felt like we were treated like family. The owner was constantly on the floor getting feedback from his attendees. Serving staff never let my two drinks get below half empty. And as we were in a large group of 40+ people at a yelp event, they handled the crowd with poised. I was blessed with the opportunity to sample the chicken and waffles, the burger, the meat loaf, and the avacado toast. Any four of these dishes were fit for A King. It was my first time trying avocado toast and chicken and waffles, and I ate too exhausted. The meat loaf was heavenly. Just heavenly. And the strawberry butter that comes on top of the chicken and waffles is to die for. It is homemade, and a work of art. All in all, welcome to Birmingham premier diner. The food is usually good so I can't be sure if this is a one time disaster. The Fish & Chips are horribly greasy, the tarter sauce tasted like pure salt. The cole slaw was tasty but that might be because the salt and grease from the rest of the meal may have coated my taste buds. I was so excited when Metro Diner came to Birmingham. We ate at the Jacksonville location years ago and it was so good. The Birmingham locations are just as tasty. Great breakfast spot. The service has always been top notch. The Fried Chicken & Waffles is my go-to. I also love their mimosas. The omelettes are also big and fluffy. Metro Dinner is one of my favorite diner in the Birmingham area the new location in Trussville Alabama is very very welcoming. The food portions are huge and my favorite dish here are the chicken and waffles the best time to Dine is doing lunch hour 12 pm noon - 5:00pm to beat the rush hour flow the only thing i dislike when they rush to cook your food doing dinner time and also try the flavor Bold City Burger is the best burger sure to satisfy your hungry tummy. The staff works hard and they all are very nice the waiter David always checking to see if you are okay. The manager Pete Cooper is the coolest if you meal not prepared right he's making sure you have the best experience when you eating at the metro dinner. Finally tried Metro Dinner today for the 1st time, and I was very disappointed. The hostess was very rude and would not give us an accurate estimate on how much longer we would wait for our table (after an hour of waiting). Thankfully the manager helped us finally get to sit down. The cheese fries with fried jalepenos were very good. The only thing I enjoyed. The chicken pot pie was hardly edible. There was so much chewy biscuit dough, and the I kept biting into pieces of bad chicken. It was awful. I couldn't even eat it. The fried chicken and shrimp & grits looked really good, but I doubt I will waste my money (and time) eating here again. I had high hopes but they did not meet them. read more

Excellent breakfast, had their Classic Eggs Benedict with Coffee, delicious! The staff was busy, but handle everyone who squizzed in, restaurant was packed. UPDATE: this should have been added weeks ago. Upon further review of a number of dinner items including: the Meatloaf dinner w/ green beans and broccoli sides (I bet the mashed potatoes are great, but I'm dieting right now). At first sight there's is a small bit of skepticism because small bits of herbs, spices and vegetables can be seen, PLEASE get over it. This is by far the best meatloaf I have had outside of my Grandmothers homes. The gravy is were the flavor stems from, I believe I detect just the right amount of sherry to finish this off. The Friday Fish dinner is just what you expect at least two large pieces of perfectly prepared fish with coleslaw and (I swapped the fries for) onion rings. Great choice. BTW some of these items were experienced thru delivery / pickup and even with considering packaging and which foods travel well, each time I can tell care was taken in the prep. Their motto was where the locals eat and they were not lying. Passed through the town visiting a friend and we dined here for breakfast. All of us cleaned our plates, it was so delicious. They menu has a good variety of items to choose from, the food is fresh, and the customer service is great. Prices are decent. Highly recommend. 3rd Metro Diner I have been to. This one was very busy. This time I decided to go with fish and chips. Wife got the burger. Fries were good they added cheese and jalapeños. Mac and cheese was good and the fish was good. But was surprised at portions of fish. If you order chicken you get a great amount of chicken. With fish it is smaller amount. Two filets. I guess I am used to most places giving a pretty big size fish portion. As for the taste it was good but not special. I would suggest chicken or waffles at this point but I think there might be some more good things in the menu. I contemplated getting the meatloaf, wish I would have. read more

This place truly resembles a true "diner"! The menu is vast and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner while they're open. They do close 2:30pm and reopen at 5:00 pm. I had corn beef hash, a scrambled egg and pancakes for my bread. The menu said the hash came with 2 poached eggs but I substituted for the scrambled eggs. I was happy that they use fresh eggs, however, my eggs ended up with shell in them. Our waiter quickly had new ones out to me. Portions are really big so it may be great to share a meal if you and a guess want the same thing. I will go back to try some of the yummy looking lunch and dinner entrees soon. read more

I ordered the Breakfast meal of Biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs with roasted potatoes. The biscuits and the scrambled eggs were good. The sausage gravy had no seasoning and tasted bland. The breakfast potatoes were plain with no seasoning at all, very plain tasting. This is the second time I have ordered this and was the same each time. The coffee was very good and the service was excellent . 13.00 was too much to pay for bland breakfast food. read more

I don't normally leave negative reviews. I have visited other locations before and had good food and service. Unfortunately, this visit failed from a service expectation. We entered the restaurant and it didn't seem very crowded. We were seated quickly by the hostess, who was very nice. However, once we were seated, no one came to the table to ask if we needed drinks or anything. We sat for 15 minutes and I watched other guests who came after we arrived have a server come to their table. We finally left without anyone ever acknowledging us. If it were busy, I would have completely understood. This experience was unacceptable and I will not visit this location again. read more

I was excited to see Metro Diner come to Trussville. I go to the one on 280 from time to time and it's always good. The last time I was at the Trussville location it took forever to get our food and when it finally arrived the shrimp & grits didn't have the grit cake. This is the main feature of this entree. Went sent it back and got something else. We were there a VERY long time. I talked to the manager and he apologized and comped the meal. He said they were having staffing problems. It's been about a couple of months so the family gave it another try (08/13/19). We got there around 7:30 and was seated quickly. They were not busy. The waitress took our drink order and we got our waters quickly. We were reviewing the menu and noticed one of our favorites, the breakfast pie, was no longer available. Some friends were leaving and stopped by and talked for about 10m. They left and were ready to order. We waited about 10m and no one came by. I went to the front desk and told her we were ready to order. We waited another 5m and no one came. We were tired of waiting so we left. This was a very disappointing experience. Probably the most frustrating thing was to see the manager hanging out around the front talking to the staff. In the half an hour we were there, he never walked around to check on the guests. Don't know that we'll give them another try. We went down the street to Tazikis and got quick service and good food. Good experience there. Hope Metro can get their act together. Metro Diner is always a good, kid-friendly spot for breakfast and traditional lunch (and dinner items like meatloaf) and now we have one in TRUSSVILLE. But I will admit that I think the building was too small before it opened! LOL! There's more parking outside than seats inside. This location seems to be the exact layout of the one in Inverness, but I've not been to the one in Vestavia so I can't compare it to that location. Sign says it seats 108 people. They could certain have used a space that serves 150 at least. The new location is in a brand new shopping area diagonally across from Homestead Village on Hwy. 11/Gadsden Hwy. Homestead is still fairly new as half of those stores and restaurants just opened in the last year or so. So be aware that traffic could be a bear depending on the time of day. Chicken Salad Chick is the only other spot opened in the shopping area with Metro. Several storefronts remain empty at this point. Since I was dining alone I was able to snag a spot at the counter which overlooks the kitchen. More about that in a minute. I ordered coffee which is good, but not strong enough for me. But that's just me. I also added a mimosa because "why not"? I ordered the Bissell Breakfast which is one of their popular meals. It comes with hash browns or potatoes or grits, side of meat, eggs and a choice of bread. They also throw in two pancakes just for good measure. LOL! The pancakes came with a little dollop of butter in a small container on top of the pancakes (I'm kinda so-so about stuff on TOP of my food so if that's you, ask if they would put it on the side). But they also brought a small tin of individually wrapped pats of butter. And they bring you warm syrup (best way to do it!) Overall, food was good. Only thing was the eggs were scrambled a tad too dry for me, but might be just right for others. Also note that the potatoes are basic square cut with a little salt. No peppers or onions like you might get with some good greasy home fries! Now, my seat at the counter overlooking the kitchen? Eh. A couple of things...they could have removed one stool to provide a little more elbow room. The stools are bolted down and they swivel. Unfortunately, you will probably have to disturb your neighbor while they are eating in order to get up. If you are taller than 6ft, swiveling might pose a problem in the area of knee and leg room. In SOME places, watching the kitchen is fascinating and sometimes kinda cool. In this instance I wasn't too excited to watch them manhandle ground beef or slosh gravy everywhere. The kitchen was PACKED with employees and trainers and they barely had room to turn. I'm guessing they probably wish they also had more room in the kitchen! Overall, good experience and a welcomed breakfast addition to this area. One can only do Cracker Barrel or Waffle House so many times. Ha! read more

Great to see old familiar faces and in a awesome setting too. The service was great here and almost as good as the strawberry butter that's pretty hard to beat. The chicken fingers with the waffles were different and I'm not sure if that's on the menu but I did like it for the yelp event. The mash potatoes by themselves I could have eaten a bowl! I also liked the parking! It looks like it's not hard to get in and out of the location as well. I been wondering what all was being built in that spot and I think this is a great addition to the east side.
