Today I stopped at Metro for lunch. On the outside the place is pretty nifty looking. The server who seated me gave me only a breakfast/brunch menu. Was seated at the counter where I got to watch the ladies do their dance of the chef. They moved with precision and great communication. Jennifer the lovely counter lady hooked me up with the lunch menu. I got a hot chocolate with whipped cream to start...because it was chilly out. Came out perfect with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. For lunch I had the tangy chicken bowl. Not a fan as the rice was over done and soggy and the chicken was a little too crispy. I did enjoy the sauce however! Jennifer and the owner tried to remove it, but I ordered it so I paid for it. Not their fault I'm a picky eater. They did give me a coupon to try something else next visit which I will do. Excellent folks and the food next to mine (chicken and waffles) looked delish. Hostesses did a great job greeting & getting ppl sat by bussing tables soon as customers left. Soon as we got sat our server Marisa came over and was very friendly. We mentioned we were in a hurry and she quickly took our order and brought our food within 10 mins! She came by to check on us and brought us our check. I initially checked the menu on Yelp and found the menu items very appealing. Our food was delicious. The restaurant appeared to be efficiently run and staff looked happy; always a good sign that they like their job and customers inevitably will receive great service. We DID!! Stopped in the day before Christmas Eve as my husband and I were picking up our son from Camp Geiger. Walked in and we were a bit worried about how long we'd have to wait for our food because it was pretty busy. We were greeted by a lovely young lady named Victoria. Food is great very unfortunate that the coffee is nasty and your served water with milk because it doesn't even taste one bit like coffee. I asked the nice waitress and she said unfortunately everyone complains about how bad the coffee is. She changed it but same. Hands down best diner in the area. Food is outta this world. Be prepared to wait as they are almost always busy but it is definitely worth it. Wanted a little something different then eggs for breakfast, so ordered the french toast. Didn't realize it was made with flat slices of croissant. When it came to the table it was the grossest mess I had ever seen. The egg was wet all the way through the hugest pile of dough and when I pulled the crossiants apart there was nothing but raw egg dripping through them. YUCK and double YUCK. I did get the meal for free as the waitress realized I was going to eat it and came and picked it up while I had gone to wash my hands. My husband told her I couldn't eat it. My husband and I love this place! We come here very often in the mornings for breakfast. The food is great, the first time we came here the English muffin my eggs Benedict sat on was hard and I had to use copious amounts of salt and pepper on my food, but we gave them a second chance and they've only gotten better. The breakfast steak bowl is great, the burger in a bowl lunch option is delicious too. The service here is always wonderful, I've never had a bad experience with any of the staff. We are always promptly seated and attended to. I love the checkered floors in here and decor, it really gives off a 1950s diner experience. My one and only complaint about this place is the smell coming from the back left of the restaurant by the waitstaff and cooking area. It smelled like we were near the restrooms which we were facing. Nobody else at the table was super impressed with their food either. If the meal had cost a lot less at a little greasy spoon diner I wouldn't be quite so let down but driving by seeing the place packed everyday and the pictures, descriptions, and prices shown online had me expecting a lot better than what we got. The first time my husband and I ate breakfast at Metro Diner, it was excellent. We had the bissel breakfast. The grits were thick, the bacon melt in your mouth crispy, the eggs perfectly cooked and the hotcakes tender. The waitress was attentive ensuring our coffee cups were filled and we lacked for nothing. It was quite a different experience this morning. We ordered the same breakfast since we liked it so well the last time. We sent back the grits because they were so runny. We received hash browns instead that were crispy on the top and raw in the middle. The eggs were hard cooked and difficult to cut. The bacon was teeth breaking hard. The hotcakes were too tough to cut with a knife. The English muffins were good. The waiter was pleasant but not too attentive. He told us to call him if we needed anything but did not linger nearby. We absolutely love Metro Diner! We come here quite often and the service is always top notch. The wait staff is always super helpful and friendly and our glasses are never empty. The one time I ordered something they were out of, the manager visited the table immediately and made it right. They are always busy for a reason. We've yet to have a bad meal, and the cooks always deliver a perfect over medium egg. Waffle House even has problems with that one! We will continue to come back as often as possible. read more

Service was not bad. Pleasant server. I saw a lot of meals that looked pretty good. I just wanted a simple lunch so I chose the grilled cheese and fruit on the side. Nothing special. I watched as my sandwich sat under the lights for several minutes. (Ended up being dry hard toast) Apparently waiting for fries (which I did not order) cheese on sandwich was thick an melted nicely. Fruit cup was no different than one grabbed off Publix shelf. So not horrible, just not impressed. Will probably go back, but overall cost was not worth the meal I received. read more

We first discovered Metro Diner in Pineville, NC. It was wonderful in every way. So we were excited to see one opening in Jacksonville. We've been probably 10 times since they opened. Some days the food, specifically omelets are good, but too many times we are disappointed. I guess it depends on who's cooking. But today, as we were waiting for our breakfast, we smelled burnt toast. To my surprise, that toast arrived at our table. It's my opinion that if I was bringing that plate to a paying customer, I would have not presented the over done toast. My omelet was ok, but the other breakfast is still causing unpleasant memories of our visit today. The burnt toast shows a lack of concern for us. Conveys the waitress could care less. Whether that is true or just an oversight, I'll never know. read more
