We stopped by Metro Diner one Sunday morning for brunch & it was fantastic! At first we were a little worried because there was about a 15 minute wait but we stuck it out & im so glad we did! They had a huge breakfast & brunch selection & it was a very affordable meal as well! I especially loved the bloody mary & mimosas for $2!! You cannot beat that! I'm writing this review because I'm really frustrated. In a time where we know restaurants are struggling and need our business to survive. Last night's meal from Metro Diner is the reason I prefer cooking at home than eating out. My daughter ordered Chicken and Waffles and I ordered the Chicken Sandwich. I checked our food while the server went inside to charge my credit card. Top box was the fried chicken....three pieces that looked as if they had been fried twice and the fourth was fried to a burnt crisp (see pic). How hard is it to use a little bit of quality control and not send out burned food? I did say something to the server, and she offered to have a new dinner made. I declined. The intent for calling ahead is so you're not waiting. My chicken sandwich was missing the bacon as well. My point of this review is take pride in your product and service. Normally I try to cook breakfast on Sundays But this particular Sunday my lady wanted to go out to eat and she mentioned this place. We live in Newport News but we took the drive to see if it was any good. Yelp said it wasnt busy on the app and sure enough when we got there at around 10:00am there wasn't a line and was able to be seated right away. We ordered some water from the lovely server and looked over the menus. She told us that although it was breakfast time they actually serve the lunch and dinner menu as well which was great to know! I ordered the Western omelette and swapped out the hash browns for a cup of fruit and my lady ordered the chicken and waffles. Didnt take long at all for the food to come out and it looked great! I was lowkey jealous of the chicken and waffles because those were some healthy looking chickens on that plate. My omelette was still banging tho and the cup of fruit was a legit nice sized cup of fruit, not that 3 pieces of miscellaneous fruit that ihop be giving. (shoutouts to ihop). The Food was Horrible! We ordered Salmon and it was RAW inside.. And the Beef had more Fat on it then Meat. The Corn beef Hash taste like it had soap in it. The Diner was Extremely Cold inside.. My husband and I visited for the first time tonight. Our server was prompt and courteous, taking time to explain the specials and giving us ample time to read through all the menu options. My Belgian Waffle was prepared perfectly. My husband asked for hash browns with the works and biscuits and gravy. It looked fine to us and he was enjoying his meal tremendously. Partway through, a manager came by with a fresh plate of biscuits and gravy, saying the gravy on the plate he was served first looked as though it may have been a bit old. My husband was confused and said it was fine but the manager insisted it wasn't up to their standards and it's not what they want to put in front of customers. Impressive! Impressive! Impressive!!!! By far the best food in the area. This is not a typical diner, the food is on-point amazing with a great selection. If you get a chance to sit at the bar, take that opportunity. They waited until our actual delivery time before they canceled our order & refunded WITHOUT EXPLANATION. We thought maybe it was an error, so we used My GH+ account to reorder & AGAIN waited until delivery time before I actually received a call, saying it was also canceled & refunded because they were changing their menu & didn't have all the items... so I asked could we change the order around to something they did have (because I'm hurt, can't stand to cook, & trying to feed my 5 kids) & was told no. After my first visit, which was not the best experience, management reached out to me to find out more about my concerns. The manager came up with a plan of action to fix the issues from the first visit within his establishment, which was much appreciated, and sent out a set of gift certificates and invited me to come back. I did a random pop up for brunch with friends following my conversation with the manager, and this visit was wonderful. Our waitress offered stellar customer service the food was superb and came out in a timely matter. I made sure to tell her how wonderful her service was. To make it better when she saw the certificate she knew about my prior experience not being the best and made sure to put me at ease and make sure that everything went better this time and even brought out the manager to who double checked that everything went well for myself and my friends. We went for breakfast and it was delicious. When they say the pancakes are small, they are kidding. They are as big as a plate. They are very fluffy and tasty. The western omelet was huge and the home fries were piled on the plate. They were perfectly crispy. The coffee was bold, but just what was needed. This place is simple and just awesome. Waitresses are efficient and really pleasant. Our food came out piping hot and super fast. We got a BLT with fries, pot roast, and fruity waffle. It was all really tasty! Fries were perfect. Sautéed veggies (side order) were really just zucchini and yellow squash but it was cooked so well. Seasoned to perfection. Not too soft, not too crunchy, just perfect. Belgian waffle was incredible, or maybe the syrup made it. I wanted to lick the plate it was so good. Syrup came to our table hot, and stayed that way a while. Usually thin runny syrup isn't as tasty to me, but I really wanted to lick the plate or just pour it straight in my mouth. We have eaten here several times now. When they first opened & had what seemed like a training team there for a while, the experience was awesome! Everything ran smoothly, food came out fast & tasting good, & servers were incredibly attentive. Even that one time my husband ordered one of their shrimp specials & the shrimp came out super undercooked, one of the managers himself cooked the shrimp to correct the mistake. We were impressed! But the last few times, we felt as if the experience had soured a little bit. My very last experience almost had me walking out of the restaurant disappointed & hungry. Ordered their Eggs Benedict & the poached eggs arrived hard as a rock. Our sweet server was stuck by the kitchen waiting on more food, so my husband walked the plate over to her & she immediately apologized & the other server standing next to her agreed the eggs were overcooked. Pleased with the feeling that it would be corrected within minutes, I waited happily... Until 15 minutes past & everyone at my table (mother & grandmother were visiting & were trying the diner out for the first time) were done eating. We believe our server was too embarrassed to come back to our table without the food knowing it was taking forever, so we actually had to flag her down & ask her what was going on. She said that the kitchen was still working on it, but I guess she forgot we had a clear view of the kitchen & it's cooks & they were cranking out meal after meal before even starting to correct mine. I have worked in several restaurants in the past & no way do you ignore a refire. They decided to not correct the issue right away & instead continue on as if it didn't happen until our server asked one of them about it. After waiting several more minutes, my table started to leave to wait outdoors & I finally got my food. I told our server that although it wasn't her fault, I was very upset & she acknowledged it with another apology. The eggs were perfect this time & I ate it as fast as I could. No manager came to the table, but the meal was dropped from the check. My husband left there saying it'll be a while before we return. Huge pro & shout-out: the older sweet hostess with short hair.
