This place has been around for as long as I can remember, and I somehow just recently had the pleasure of trying it for the first time at The Pancake House & Grill, and honestly, I'm mad I waited this long come dine here. I ordered the Southwest omelet, a side of fresh fruit, and the sweet potato pancakes (no pecans, no powdered sugar). Everything came out exactly how I asked for it, which I truly appreciated. Shoutout to our waitress, who was incredibly kind, patient, and attentive. I'm currently being mindful of my blood pressure, and she made sure my food was prepared without added salt with zero attitude and full care. That level of service really stood out! The omelet was flavorful without being overwhelming, the fruit was fresh, and the sweet potato pancakes still hit without all the extras; soft, comforting, and perfectly cooked. They didn't even need syrup or butter to fully enjoy. I'm giving 4 stars because while the food and service were great, I still want to come back and try a few more things before calling it perfect. I've never went into an establishment and felt like I was a bother to a person that works on commission. I should have left upon being partially greeted. The man had ZERO personality nor was he friendly. I dont know the waitress name but she interacted with the tables around me in a friendly upbeat manner and when it came to me she was blahhhh!!! I had to get her attention when I needed something. The table by me she gave them everything they needed without question. I couldn't even get a napkin. When I asked her about it her response was did you not get one with your utensils. I ordered my food before an elderly couple came in and seated and they got their food before me. Very strange My food was good. Service was horrible. If you can't deal with the public get out of the industry. With that being said I told her how I felt respectfully and still tipped her to be the better person. No scene was made. I will definitely not go back. Local favorite spot. This place always has great food and great service. It is small inside but I've never waited more than 15minutes for a table. I went with my 3 kiddos. At our table was stuffed French toast, strawberry & blueberry, fried French toast, honey chicken biscuits and regular French toast. Of course we had the normal breakfast items, eggs, bacon and scrapple. The server was amazing and attentive. I ordered a mango sorbet mimosa, which was delicious. In my search for the very best pancakes in the area (which I've been told they have) I find myself at The Pancake House & Grill in Norfolk. The business has been around for many decades on Wards corner. The exterior looks basic and the business is in a strip with good signage. Surface parking was adequate. Debris was seen in the lot and walk up. The sign said wait to be seated which is fine, but have a hostess which they did not. The waitresses and owner took turns. They had a decent Friday brunch crowd. It took a bit to be acknowledged and then seated at a table. The dining room surprised me because it was updated. Can I be a bit disappointed, well all good. However I heard they had lots of nicely framed black & whites of Norfolk hanging on the walls. I actually saw a few on the floor in a corner. My waitress an older lady got me coffee and water and smiled. I utilized the gender neutral restroom in the back left and found it clean with proper supplies. I found the old photos pushed off in a back hallway. They were so cool and disappointing that they are no longer the centerpiece of the restaurant. They also have a full service bar with around six chairs in the rear. My coffee from Norfolk Coffee & Tea was amazing. This is a business that been inn the Norfolk area since the early 1900's. A few of my favorite business's carry them. So this was a great sign. My breakfast order was blueberry pancakes with eggs over easy and sausage. The eggs and links came out first, then shortly after pancakes. Although the pancakes looked amazing they were sweet potato and were taken back. Pretty sure the waitress made a mistake as they were returned to the kitchen. The eggs were perfectly done and sausage tasty. About 10 minutes later she returned with blueberry pancakes which ended up being worthy of the wait. Three hot cakes with a hot cup of syrup. She did a coffee refill. The cakes were possibly the best I've ever had, so moist and thin the way I like. Huge full blueberries were in the pancake batter to make these beauties. They specialize in pancakes and I saw a pumpkin special roll out too! As I enjoyed breakfast I was ready for a third cup of coffee as I drained my cup. My waitress did a refill at a nearby table but made no eye contact with me. A short time later after she returned the pot to the kitchen I got her attention for a refill. My bill was closed out table side with a small machine, I always tip 20% no matter, but did note service issues preventing the 4th star. A 3.5 seems to fit this brunch visit the best and I would return. If you go do not miss the photos by the restrooms. read more

Popped in here after PT one morning. Only a few minutes outside of Norfolk Naval base. Great service and a home feel. Coffee was fresh. I ordered the grilled corn beef hash with scrambled eggs cheese added. Friends ordered the strawberry pancakes, omelette, pancake stack. All food was fresh and came out quick. I had brunch scheduled with a friend, and the place we'd planned on meeting was closed for some renovations. So, we looked for another place nearby and this one popped up. It's tucked in a strip mall, and there is quite a bit of parking so that's a plus. There was a line out the door for seating, so I figured I was in for a treat. Not so much. We got a table, and from there it was SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. Took ages for a server to acknowledge us and bring us drinks. Once they did, it then took ages for us to get our food. It was easily over two hours. But, I figured, that's just me as long as the food is stellar, the wait doesn't always matter. But this - eh. It was basic breakfast fare, nothing special to rave home about. I ordered an omelet that I customized with hashbrowns. The portion was large, I'll give it that, but the eggs were dry and my avocado was under-ripe which made it not cook particularly well in the omelet. The portion of hashbrowns was tiny by comparison. Honestly, something I could have gotten at any diner, anywhere - or even made at home pretty easily (and if I had, it would have been better). To top it off, took FOREVER to get the check and I was almost late to my next appointment. Overall, I was not super impressed - but perhaps I should have gone with pancakes at a place called the Pancake House. I'm not in this area often, so I doubt I'll be back, but if I do end up back here, I'll probably check that side of the menu out instead. read more

Unfortunately, the inconsistency has made it impossible to ever recommend this establishment. * Attempt 1: Showed up on a Monday, only to find they were closed. * Attempt 2: They were forced to close early due to plumbing issues. I understand things break, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried one more time. * Attempt 3: I arrived at 12:30 PM (well before their 2:30 PM closing time). I waited 20 minutes to be seated, only for the manager to finally come out and announce they were closing the kitchen two hours early due to a backlog. After wasting my time on three separate occasions, I'm done. Reliable service is the bare minimum for a restaurant, and this establishment clearly isn't interested in providing it. No amount of good food is worth the frustration of not knowing if a business will actually be open when they say they are. Been in business since 1962, the kind owner of this establishment also serves as a host to this restaurant looking quite pleased with what was being offered. The Angus Burgers, he indicated, sounded delightful, but my friend swayed me to go with the Texas Special. Complete with an 8 ounce ribeye and served with two eggs, the entree was grilled to order with Montreal seasoning. Every bite of that steak was a bit of a savory joy with balanced seasoning while not being too salty. The eggs, served over easy, were not too hard or too soft, but were thick enough to pick up with a fork. Almost perfect! I also paired up that meal with the Peaches & Cream Pancakes. They were made with an original egg batter recipe with tender peaches and topped with whipped cream. No syrup needed because the peaches already took care of the sweetness along with providing some texture that was easy to bite into with the whipped cream and pancake mixed into a bite which exudes a comforting flavor of pure bliss. Headed up here for breakfast this am, first visit since the pandemic. Giving them an extra star for their Covid procedures and super friendly employees. I totally killed my diet by ordering the waffle feast (WW forgive me) and Hubby went with the French Toast feast. Neither one of us was disappointed. The bacon on both was perfectly cooked - crispy but not overdone. Hubby was happy with his sunny side up eggs. I judge breakfast places by their scrambled eggs. I wasn't impressed today. I ordered them scrambled with cheese (because if I am going to blow my WW points early in the day, I'm going big), and there was almost too much cheese (really though, is there such a thing?) and it changed the consistency from soft and fluffy to almost runny. The Belgian waffle more than made up for the eggs, though. Wow! As soon as our server set it down, I could smell the vanilla. It was perfect - crispy on the outside and oh so fluffy on the inside. Oh the waffley goodness! I am not ashamed to say I devoured the entire thing. Don't worry WW, we'll talk again tomorrow. I'm assuming the French today was yummy as well - the deal was that Hubby and I were going to share half my waffle for half his toast. It didn't work out there way - he wasn't giving up on the toast. If you're not from the area and you're looking for a good place to get a breakfast burrito, this is the place it seems kind of sketchy because it's right next to a strip club but it's not. from my time in Virginia This place has become a highlight. While visiting Norfolk, Va., I had an opportunity to have breakfast at the Pancake House & Grill during 2024 Xmas and New Year's holidays. During my first morning BF, I used their bathroom and it did not have paper towels to dry my hands. I mentioned it to the employee staff. Days later, I returned for BF and once again, no paper towels to dry my hands. Again, I mentioned it to the employee staff and reminded them that it was the second time I had to bring it to their attention. Restaurants need to supply bathroom paper towels for sanitary and health reasons especially during BF, Lunch an dinner and as our country again faces COVID, THE FLU, RSV, AND PNEUMONIA. Subsequent to my second reminder about the missing paper towels, the waitress staff ignored me and, in my opinion, did not wait on me intentionally while looking directly at me when passing my table. The chicken was seasoned and cooked perfect for my taste and the waffles were simple and tasted great! They have a variety of coffees and also serve mimosas, yummmmm. Not sure what's with some of the bad reviews here but my husband and I moved to Norfolk last August and I sat at the bar and ordered breakfast burritos to go to take to my husband at work. They were AMAZING !! He and I have been coming here almost every Sunday since then. We always sit at the bar and the bartender Katie is one of the best I had in a while. It's a small place and people are seated fairly close in proximity. Pricey for standard breakfast items. My eyes first spotted the $3 for a cup of coffee. Gotta have coffee. It was ok. Nothing special other than a hot cup of regular ole coffee. Food was ok. My daughter ordered the apple pancakes. They were three huge pancakes stuffed with plain sautéed apples and folded up all fancy. They looked like they were worth the $8 they charge. Whip cream is additional charge so my daughter opted for no whip cream. Although, I would've paid the extra $0.50 or $1 for whip cream if she wanted. :) Pancakes lacked flavor and were dry overall. The apples made the bottoms of the cakes soggy. The syrup didn't taste like pure maple. I could be wrong as I'm not a syrup connoisseur but love pure maple. It's all I use at home. I ordered a fried egg & side of turkey links I shared w/ daughter. Over cooked egg and regular ole links. That was about $5/$6 I spent approx $8 for an egg, links, & coffee. I didn't even take a pic. I didn't need to order anything else though. My daughter and I shared one of three pancakes. She packed the rest to bring home. I can see why locals love coming here. When we visit Michigan we normally stop for breakfast. Yesterday, the hubby and I stopped in and I ordered my eggs scrambled well and browned. I sent the eggs back twice because they were not cooked as requested. The waitress informed me that they wouldn't take the meal off the bill. I asked for management and received the owner. Normally, that's a good thing ...Today it was a nightmare! The manager angrily expressed that he never knew anyone to have their eggs cooked that way and the eggs were made the way I wanted them. I informed him that I felt uncomfortable being judged about the way I prefer to eat my eggs and the eggs were not edible for me. He left and came back after 5mins and offered an apology and stated the server never communicated the way i wanted my eggs to the kitchen. Apology not accepted sir! You don't instinctively verbally attack a customer about how they eat their eggs or speak to a customer until you find out from the staff/kitchen what went wrong on your end. If an owner has issues with troubleshooting, communication and managing their emotions, they should limit their exposure with customers. My hubby and I will never return... not because the eggs were not cooked to my request but because of the owners unprofessional, disrespectful and passive aggressive behavior.
