However, I must note that when we adopted her she had a mild case of kennel cough. This became a problem because I have another dog in my home who is a senior. Luckily, they were both taken to the vet and were treated. I honestly wish that I would have been notified of this issue before adoption, so she could have been treated before we brought her home. Kennel cough is highly contagious so I know other dogs at the shelter must have it too, hopefully they have gotten this under control.

In both cases of adoption the foster mothers checked in with me several times to ask if the transition was working out & were available for any questions I might have. I would recommend a rescue group like this - (especially if you are not experienced with dogs straight out of the shelter), as they are experienced with socializing the dogs and have a supportive medical network for needs that might need to be addressed when the dog leaves the city shelter. Before I adopted these 2 I had several Tzus from breeders over the years. I mentioned to Missy, a foster mother, that "I wish I knew more background, etc". She said "Don't worry, these dogs are just happy to be alive & with someone who cares". I thought "yeah, right", but she was absolutely correct, they have both been a total joy in our lives.

My girlfriend and I walked into the store, followed the signage, and turned left about halfway into the store. There, we were immediately judged from two overly fastidious and persnickety (older) women. It was the "tattoos" or the "bold hairstyle" where references were made, and southern judgmental-ism rested. Looking beyond their poor approach, we introduced ourselves, and the ringleader of the troupe came forward to exclaim, "I know who you are. I looked you up online. You have a well-paying job but have no place owning a dog. We don't allow anyone to to adopt that works more than as much as you do!" Stunned at the complete lack of sanity, sheer ignorance and irrevocable (lofty) expectations, I replied, "Well, my family has owned eleven dogs since I was four, and all of them have had wonderful lives. My parents worked normal jobs (six to eight hours) like 95% of the population in the United States, and those dogs never had any issues being alone." A retort bounced back, "You're just not ideal for owning a dog. Good luck to you." Completely flabbergasted, my girlfriend and I walked away. It was definitely for the best that we did not adopt from them... I wound up rescuing a purebred Beagle from Lost Paws Rescue of Texas. The owner, Lisa, conveyed some troubling information about the lady we dealt with at DFW Tzus and how their organization is conducted. Even further concerning, the manager of the PetSmart shared his observations with me, to the tune of "their adoption expectations are elitist and close-minded. That's not what adopting is about, and not what our store stands for." Interestingly, DFW Rescue Me is the exact opposite of DFW Tzus as far as their inner-workings and dedication to finding forever homes for animals. Racism exists not purely and solely in the form of what most people think: skin color. But, more so in the fact that certain styles (fashion) or even lifestyles signify a tattered, sometimes criminal life. I am happy to report that my girlfriend and I both have advanced degrees, excellent careers, strong family ties, and surprisingly Conservative views. Appearances usually are deceiving, and there is no place for judgmental minds or racism in our world any longer.

I am extremely disappointed and concerned for the shelter. Born and raised in GP, previously I had…read morenothing but mostly positive experiences. We had a situation in middle December, close to Christmas where the shelter ACOs were contacted but their services ended up not being needed. Without hearing the full story regarding the situation or even really being allowed to speak on it, my sister was repeatedly harassed by both ACOs and I guess the police department receptionist? I am just assuming the PD because these people were literally threatening to arrest a pregnant woman and claiming she broke "several laws" which wasn't true. This all took place over the telephone, no one ever giving their name. When my sister was contacted again she asked for someone higher up and they just said "that was a receptionist and they shouldn't have said any of that". These people were intimidating, disrespectful, and severely unprofessional when handling this already traumatic situation. We are residents of this city and regardless of what they THOUGHT the situation was, we were NOT treated with respect nor compassion. I personally will not be using/suggesting GPAS as a resource for this city because they clearly do not see themselves that way. ETA: Almost immediately after updating this review, on the same day my sister was contacted by GPAS once more, after receiving no further updates from them for several weeks. She was told that they have contacted the place where her dog was euthanized and that they have no record of her or the dog. They read off the information including the dogs name which was all incorrect and misspelled. So they are steadily attempting to get information but are completely incapable of taking the information, getting the complete story along with facts, and taking care of this "investigation". I also want to include that they have still yet to reach out to the "victim" of this situation (who is literally our mother that we live with) nor me who works at the place this traumatic event was carried out and finalized per the law. They again threatened over the phone, without giving their name, to "take this higher if we can not close this case". The intimidation continues and I will keep updating this review for as long as this continues to go on.

I filed an animal welfare check and barking complaint with Grand Prairie Animal Services more than…read moreTWO MONTHS AGO, and it has never been serviced. The receptionist says they "lost" my first report filed on 10/9, and the second report filed on 10/20 has never been serviced!  An animal control officer came out to the property on late October, said no one was home, and she'd give me a call once she did an animal welfare check. SHE NEVER CALLED ME BACK. The field operations manager left me a voicemail on December 15th saying she had been out for the past month, and she was disappointed the call was never serviced. From our perspective, the dog is outdoors 24/7 without shelter, so not taking care of my multiple complaints could potentially lead to injury or death of the dog. It also barks all hours of the day and night, keeping the entire neighborhood up. Not having an animal welfare check done more than two months after my reports is UNACCEPTABLE.

The visit was very thorough both with her questions as well as mine. She was very attentive and understanding. We talked about the three Labs I had over many years. She was very aware of my answers plus she showed an understanding for the safety of my home for a rescue. She submitted the information and I received an email two days later explaining the process of meeting any of the available dogs. Finally I met a wonderful petite Lab of six years. The foster was wonderful and truly cared about the happiness of the rescue. The entire process was timely plus honest. My new Lab is perfect for me. I cannot say enough thank yous to DFWLab Rescue.

I got a call stating she was mine, so we set that up for Tuesday at which time they did the home inspection. I was so appreciative that they were willing to vet the families to make sure the right people are adopting their dogs. I love my dog and she is by my side even still. Today I received some disturbing news regarding a adoption with Homeward Bound Animal Rescue, my…read morefamily member filled out an application for a pet adoption on Saturday received a message from Jud on Monday advising that they were approved for the dog. Of course this was great news as this dog was a early Christmas present for a 6 year old little girl. Jud advised that he would bring the dog out on Tuesday for delivery. Jud and the dog arrive and Jud advises that he has to do a home inspection, as he is doing his home inspection he states that he allowed the dog to sleep with he and his wife and discussed the interaction with the dog and his family. It seems as if Jud and his family were pretty attached to the dog. Well upon inspection of the back yard, Jud makes comments about the family pool and the potential of the dog drowning then he goes on to discuss some holes in the fence. As Jud is doing his inspection the dog and the child are bonding. The dog is enjoying his play time with the child and of course the child is loving on her new dog. Well at this point Jud states that I cant leave the dog because of the holes in the fence. Well of course this upsets the child because she understand that the dog that she was told would be hers has been taken away that quickly. Now, I clearly understand that Jud's concern is the dog, he was advised that the dog would be kept in the house and would not be in the back yard. Jud states that he could not look his wife in the eye and say he left the dog in a safe location with the fence having holes where the dog could get out. Jud advises after the fence is repaired then maybe the adoption can be considered. Well Jud did not leave it at that, he later decides to send a text message stating that he suggests the family search several local shelters for their dog, providing names of other shelters and mentioned that they have quick adoption processes. In the future I would suggest doing your home inspection prior to telling someone they are approved to make sure their home suits the qualification that are not listed on your application. Secondly, Jud your text message was very rude and unprofessional. I suggest you seek some training in communication if you are going to represent this organization.
