Metropolis Coffee Company is a staple in the Edgewater neighborhood! I love that Metropolis opens really early so I'm able to grab a coffee during my early morning walks. Metropolis also stays open late enough to stop by before the workday is over. No matter what time of day I visit the coffee shop is busy. If you want to grab a table you have to arrive earlier in the day. It gets very busy while Loyola is in session so grabbing a seat is hard. Metropolis is the place to go for in-person meetings and hanging out with friends because it gets loud inside. Metropolis is not the place take work calls. Metropolis offers seasonal / monthly drinks and offers seasonal treats depending on the time of year. They have cute Halloween treats during that time of year. I always look forward to seeing what the new drink will be! Lastly, the staff is extremely friendly! A spacious coffee shop located near Loyola with plenty of tables to study from. When you enter, you are met by the coffee counter where you order and pick up the coffee. To the right is a separate room with plenty of small tables and outlets. Additionally, behind the coffee counter are a few more tables. I decided to try the special from their winter menu, the Snickerdoodle Latte iced. It was described as brown butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. To be honest, it tasted a little flat - didn't get much in coffee or brown sugar. It wasn't bad, but wasn't good enough for me to make the trek back up for. Price-wise it wasn't bad as compared to other coffee shops, around $6 for a large. read more

I found parking outside very easily. There's free wifi available. I got the oat draft latte and added sugar free vanilla for sweetener. It was so delicious, and creamy from the oat milk. The service was nice. The cashier was patient with us and answered all of our questions. He also wrote each person's name on their drink, even my children! Stumbled into this coffee shop on a long weekend getaway into the city. It was the perfect spot and we visited twice during our stay. We even picked up a bag of beans to bring home with us! The baristas were super friendly and helped create my blended raspberry matcha drink which was creamy and delicious. Both trip we sat inside to enjoy or beverages. They also have a nice looking outdoor seating area. I particularly enjoyed checking out the local art that is available for sale. Will definitely stop by next time we're in the city! read more

Do you remember that time when Starbucks was a place one could hang out, maybe do some work, or even bring a date? That time before mobile ordering and DoorDash was a thing? There was a time when Starbucks was a so-called "third place." You have home, work, and then another, 3rd place. Well, in the post-COVID era, the third place places are a lot more uncommon... and Starbucks is now about cranking out orders those ordering online than those in-store. Yet, the third place is not completely dead, and Metropolis Coffee Company is one such place. There is no table with a couple dozen orders piling up for pickup, instead there is not only more a generous amount of seating, but a whole room of tables where people can enjoy a cup of coffee, something sweet, and the company of a friend or date. Every time I've stopped in, I see families, someone working on a laptop in a corner, or a group of old friends. This is what sets Metropolis Coffee great. The fact that it is from a time when people weren't in a hurry, or preferring to pay the apps' markup+fees+delivery+tip as opposed to putting on pants and leaving the house for 10-15 minutes. As for the coffee, it's very solid, better than what I've had at home, but not the greatest stuff I've had. The same sentiment applies to their baked goods. The croissants are not the flaky, buttery, warm goodness some cafes and bakeries have, but better than what's sold in supermarkets. Finally, as for the service, it is consistently friendly, welcoming, and appropriately fast. Thus, while if I want a terrific cup of coffee or an amazing pastry, I feel there are better options, Metropolis is the kind of place I would visit for the vibes, with the coffee being a cherry on top - not the main show, but definitely nice. read more

Been here many times. The coffee is consistently a great cup of coffee. If I hang out and drink my coffee, I purchase always a 2nd cup and take home to drink or back to the office to drink. I like the coffee here well enough to bring in my coffee thermos and purchase a couple of large cups of coffee and dump into my thermos and carry my thermos to the house and nurse my coffee for the rest of the morning. Early morning walks in Chicago and husband and I found this little hidden gem. The most friendliest barista's I have ever encountered in my life, she was very helpful and gave some popular recommendations. This local coffee shop is a hit with the locals that live in that area. Back in DC, I'm lucky if a small costs $5 or less... The matcha latte doesn't come sweetened but you can add simple syrup, vanilla, etc. I opted for white chocolate syrup - it's my little hack for when a matcha drink tastes a little watery or too milk and you want to bring out the earthy matcha flavor with some sweetness. When I got my drink (really fast btw!), I wanted more white chocolate syrup and the barista poured more into my cup. It was DELICIOUS! My brother got a latte with regular milk and a big cookie. We ordered together and our total was $13 which I think was a more than fair price considered my XL matcha. I did add syrup and oat milk to mine, which of course adds to the cost. It was worth every penny! Service was speedy and I was grateful that they didn't charge me for wanting more syrup. There was a healthy amount of people inside working, chatting, chilling. Had a really good cappuccino, which is always the mark of a great coffee shop. Enjoyed a couple of hearty, meat-filled pastries for breakfast. And bought one of their top selling roasts to bring home. We've enjoyed sipping on that all week! (Buying beans gets you a free small coffee - why doesn't everyone do this?!) This coffee shop near Loyola is the perfect place to grab a cup of Joe on the go ... or to stay a while and study. It took us awhile to find parking ... since it seems like it's located on a main thoroughfare for students. We finally found a spot a ways up the street - and the walk wasn't too bad since it was actually sunny out. Upon entering, there's a certain hipster charm you can't quite place ... but you know you could spend a while there trying to figure it out. The decor is inviting and modern -- and the very subtle Superman vibe is just lowkey enough to excite fans, but not nearly enough to overpower the space. The shop was very busy when we entered ... but the line moved fairly quickly! The folks at the register were nice and seemed to be handling the quick pace of customers well. They checked our vaccine cards just in case we wanted to stay and drink our coffee there -- but there weren't any tables available for us to do that. I ordered an iced vanilla latte with oat milk -- the coffee flavor definitely shone through, and it was delicious. We also ordered some food -- two bagels with cream cheese and a chicken hand pie that kind of resembled a Hot Pocket. The bagels were good ... but we didn't realize until we were already at our car that they weren't toasted. Since we're not locals - we didn't know to ask, and it was never offered to us as an option (maybe it's not??) My brother ate the chicken hand pie -- he said the pastry was good, but the filling wasn't his favorite. I would definitely come back to Metropolis the next time I'm in Chicago! read more

I was staying in an AirBnB down the street and wanted a walking distance coffee shop to enjoy the nice weather in Chicago. This popped up so I figured I would give it a try. Omg. First of all, there was a line, but the barista was SO FREAKING NICE and calm and took the time to answer my questions and help me. They didn't rush me at all. They had sesame milk which I have NEVER HEARD OF so I wanted to try it and the barista literally walked away from the register to grab me a sample. And it was AMAZING. FYI it's so creamy and delicious, is would be amazing in vanilla/mocha/caramel coffees. I ended up with a lavender honey espresso with oat milk because...it's the best. It was so good. The shots were pulled perfectly. Also, make sure to ask how many shots per size because THEY WILL LOAD YOU DOWN. I also snagged a chai latte for my dad and he drank it down, he said it was very cinnamon heavy and he was a fan. This place is bomb. I would love one closer to home. I come here for the donuts and rotating drink menu. Each month/season they feature a special menu of themed drinks. How can I resist lattes inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants, Taylor Swift, Barbie and horror movies? That's just a sampling of the themes they've had over the last few years (how clever is breakfast themed drinks? Ha). Overall a quality cafe. Prices way too high on some items Place could use a bit of cleaning and sprucing up. Being that they don't leave the front door open and that there are no windows and a lot of people in a confined space they should consider either installing windows in the front or leaving front and back doors open plus cranking the AC for ventilation to come in more. Staff friendly enough at this quaint in neighborhood cafe. They should consider these things for everyone's benefit. read more

I'm finally making a review about my favorite coffee shop in the city! I love coming here, it's such a vibe. They play alternative music on low so you can study or read. Many people I see come here for a coffee date, read their newspaper, work, journal, study. I'd definitely recommend coming in early to catch a seat. All the baristas are kind and friendly. I've never had a bad coffee here EVER. I love the fact that they change their menus up so often, keeps things fresh. They also have teas which I order if I'm not feeling up to coffee. They have plenty of items to order from the bakery. I usually get the spinach hand pie, a croissant, or an everything bagel with cream cheese. They have it so you can toast your own bagel as well. Their is water available to pour yourself too. They have neat art from local vendors hanging up. When you walk in the coffee shop there are a bunch of local event flyers hanging and different business cards/flyers. A printer is also available for use and a small bookshelf. read more

Metropolis! I love this coffee shop! I've been here many times and they've never let me down. I really like how colorful it is, and I believe the artwork they have up gives the place personality! This time around I got a Large Iced Oat Milk Draft Latte and it was really good, I added some cinnamon on top after getting the drink and then it was amazing. My friend was looking for something like an Horchata Latte, which is something they don't offer but the worker was extremely nice and offered to make him something similar. My experience with the staff here is always great. I'm not sure if this is the type of place you would go to get work done but definitely the type of place to go have a chat with your friends. I love the vibe of the place. Which is made up by the cool staff. The beans are the best ! I actually drive 20 minutes each way to get them. Long to buy bags of beans but they're worth it. The beans are consistent and of course they are good. There's nothing like getting a perfect taste from your beans . I also get reward points.! The last time I was there I thought they forgot to charge me for my bag, turns out it was free because of the reward points. The great news is that they have parking. The bad news is this often full and it's super hard to get in and out. I often need someone else to guide me a stranger I put off the street is the disappointing part but the beans rock. read more

I haven't been here since before Covid and there's been some changes to the place. Last I remember was an interesting cold brew glass tube set up which is now gone. Anyhow, I ordered a cortado with soy that was the closest I've had to any Portland cafe. Just excellent! I let the barista know she did it perfectly.
