We live close to this place so it was a default choice for our primary vet after doing some research and reading mostly positive reviews. We have 2 dogs- one big doodle mix and one little mutt, both with distinct personalities so I feel like I've had a range of experience. Pros: you are always told how much something will cost and asked if you want to do it - no surprises, veterinarians are kind and informative when I had my questions prepared, extended hours are helpful for working pet parents, typically quick appointments. Cons: when my pet was having an emergency they said they could not take her in even though I was sobbing on the phone and willing to wait to be squeezed in, multiple times I have verbally confirmed all the vaccinations that my dog was supposed to receive and one was missed or records were not updated correctly, it seems like all of these things stem from having too many clients. Overall a great vet if you have time to wait and are thorough in your own paperwork. We have 1of our dogs that still goes here and have moved 1 that has more health issues to a more personal, attentive vet. read more

My wife and I have 2 dogs, an 85lb chocolate lab mix and our recent adoption of a 20lb min pin mix. I hit the last straw with my previous vet trying to shake me down and promptly started searching. I can say that finding a vet in Chicago is far more stressful than it needs to be. I read countless reviews across all the vets within reasonable distance from my home. Most of the low reviews across any vet seem to be cat related. I called Metro vet the same night I left my previous vet and had an appointment scheduled for the next morning. Every time I've called the staff has felt genuine and do their best to help answer your questions. The Dr we saw was direct, listened to me, my concerns and addressed them appropriately. The office was also very patient with me and Chewy while filling prescriptions online. We will definitely be returning and fully transferring our dogs to metro vets care. read more

This is the best clinic I've been to! They are always incredibly kind and attentive. I have two 2-yr old female pit bulls that I take here for all their needs. The technician team is polite and have always handled my dogs with care. The vets are also amazing. They aren't condescending or rude when they give you their diagnosis and are incredibly understanding when it comes to what you can and cannot afford. Their main concern is your pet! I am not one to do this, but since I left on Thursday last week, I can't stop thinking about the way I was treated. The assistants and desk clerks are wonderful, and I don't have a bad thing to say. I can say they have true compassion for animals and you can tell they love their work. The doctor, however, made me feel like I was the most terrible human and dog mom ever, and I refuse to ever go back. There is a very condescending tone, and she spoke to me as if I was a complete idiot. I'm an assistant principal in CPS and in a doctoral program that is kicking my butt right now and was told I "need to prioritize my dog." I prioritized him when he walked into my school building with a broken femur and no home. I prioritized him by paying 150 a week to have him walked twice a day, and I certainly prioritize him when I spend every other minute I have with him. My diet and feeding was all wrong. He is over weight. (9.5 lbs) He has fear aggression and anxiety (because he wasn't too fond of having a thermometer being shoved up his behind.) She told me he's young and "there's still hope for him." I'm pretty sure his whole life has some hope seeing he's not on the street anymore. And while I am not an animal doctor and she may be giving me great advice... there is a way to talk to people that doesn't make them feel like crap. There is a way to talk to a new dog owner from a stance of curiosity and non-judgement. I understand passion for your work, as I have it for kids, but I would never speak to people the way I was spoken to. Other people in my building have expressed the same sentiments, and now I know, while I may not be perfect 3 months in mothering a rescue I never planned, I am not crazy for being offended by the way I was spoken to. I love my pup more than anything, and I want to see a doctor that can help me, and not belittle me. read more

We've been going to Metro Vet for our French Bulldog puppy since bringing him home in May. Our puppy sees Dr. Cruz-Balser and we (and our puppy) love her! He gets so excited and actually pulls to go IN to the clinic. We did a lot of research on different veterinarians before bringing home our puppy because Frenchies carry high health risks, and we've been consistently impressed with Dr. Cruz-Balser's knowledge of bulldogs. A few of the techs described her as the "bulldog expert" of the clinic. Overall Dr. Cruz-Balser is professional, respectful, and it's obvious how much she cares about the dogs. We love that she keeps up with new research, backs her recommendations with a solid evidence base and takes a level-headed approach. Recently, we had a little scare where our puppy needed to be put under to get a biopsy. She walked us through our options and maintained communication throughout. We felt confident with her and our treatment plan the whole time. Every tech and receptionist has also been awesome. We've called with questions a few times (like when our pup ate the ear loops off of a face mask... oops). Even if we felt like it was a silly issue they were never dismissive and have been very helpful. As a puppy parent I LOVE having a clinic that knows our dog where we can call and get fast advice. The last big plus for us is their great hours. We haven't had a problem getting our dog in and can usually get an appointment 1-2 days out. For an urgent issue over the summer they made time for him the same day which was awesome. read more

I can't thank Metro Vet enough for their help with my dog this past weekend. I called my current vet (not Metro) when my dog had what I thought was a medical emergency. They were too busy to even bother talking to me, so I was desperately calling around on a Saturday to see if I could get help somewhere. Even without being a current patient, Metro Vet took the time to talk to me and let me know what they thought could be the problem (without examining him of course) and were able to get me their earliest appointment. I really appreciate them going out of their way to help me and my dog. They definitely went above and beyond. read more

I love this vet! I started going here earlier this year for my dog, Dorothy. The entire staff/vets are all so professional, kind, and really know their stuff. I initially took Dorothy hair to get her nails trims and they were so professional that I decided to book her vaccinations here. The vet that I met with was so great with Dorothy and knowledgeable about what vaccinations are necessary for city dogs. On top of that, I am a total hypochondriac for my dog - I brought her in recently because she was (what I later learned to be) inverse sneezing. The staff was so professional when I brought her in and told me she was fine and didn't charge me for that visit. I was shocked. I brought her in again for vomiting/a dog cold - and they treated her so well and gave me various options with all different price ranges for me to review before they did anything. I went with my dog to check him out for diarrhea , incontinence, cough , vomiting . They took stool sample and called me later is all good , negative stool exam . When I asked how to deal with my sick dog a rude upfront lady tells me to make an appointment with the doctor . When I explained my belief that I am pretty sure the dog needs immediate care and cannot wait was told clear this is not option. Dogs do not need just vaccines they also need care when sick or at least be explained what to do if the dog vomits or is not eating. Is definitely not an office where you can trust good care for your pet . Stay away of this place ! read more

I hate writing negative reviews, but unfortunately my experience yesterday left me with a bad taste in my mouth and looking for a new vet. A week after I moved to the city (a year and a half ago) I unfortunately had to take my dog to the vet because he ingested something he shouldn't have. I found this vet on yelp and as it had great reviews and was conveniently located near my apartment, I brought him in as a walk-in. When I brought him in I explained to the vet that we were new to the city, but were atleast fortunate to have found a new vet so soon and that we would have the old vet fax over all of his documentation and records. Upon the great experience the first time (and glowing reviews from the vet at how well mannered he was) my dog was discharged and at the bottom of the receipt they put a reminder for me to bring him in for his senior wellness check in September-2019. I would think that one could safely assume that means they knew they were going to be our vet. Fast forward to February of this year my dog got into some chocolate and I had to bring him back. Upon arrival I was told that they weren't taking walk-ins unless we were patients there, but since we were patients there I gave the lady our details and we got right in. They examined him, took care of him, and even though it was expensive I was so happy I had a vet whom I trusted with the 1 thing most precious to me. Fast forward to yesterday, I find out from my airline that the regulations changed as of 4/1/19 for ESAs and on top of providing them a form from your doctor, you also need to have your vet sign a form stating that the dog has had it's rabies vaccinations. Well no problem for me, I had all documentation and paperwork and my dog had his 3 year rabies vaccination right before we moved, I just needed the vet to sign the rabies form confirming he was vaccinated. When I brought it in the girl at the front desk went back to talk to the vet and all of a sudden I am being told that they can't sign the form until after I bring him in for a full wellness check and that my dog is now for some reason not a "real patient" there because he has only had emergency wellness checks. I am now left to infer that the emergency wellness checks I paid for aren't as high quality as the "real" wellness checks. They have one front desk girl I really like, but unfortunately I got stuck with the girl that kept calling me "mam", kept repeating that it's "the regulation" and "that by me asking them to sign the form stating that he was vaccinated was breaking the law", and she kept pushing me to schedule an appointment at 7:30 am the next morning as if she was doing me some HUGE favor. First of all I'm 27 so calling me mam and talking to me as if I am an infant is super condescending. Second of all (it's not the regulation it's the policy). 3rd of all they need to figure out what their patient requirements are and not be shady about it. And finally: I called the airline when I got home and asked them what the requirements of the vet form were and if the dog needed a full wellness check and was told "No, the form is just confirmation from the vet that the dog is up to date on its rabies shots".I was able to submit the records of his rabies shots instead of the form. They obviously don't have a clue about the ESA requirement. I can no longer trust that they care more about their patients than they do about making money. I didn't want to believe the negative reviews on here until I saw it with my own eyes. PET OWNER BEWARE! read more

Another 5 star review for MetroVet. Our Lola wasn't feeling too well, and despite having been to MetroVet before, it had been awhile because we have indoor cats only... their car is more minimal. They got us in and provided amazing care to our Lola. We continue to be impressed by their professionalism and flexibility. Our girl got x-rays, put to sleep (to make her more tolerable at the Dr), and given medicine to get her on the upswing. Thanks MetroVet, we'll see you this summer for their vaccines. read more

They respond to emails, docs call, pricing is still fair. When I adopted my current best bud he had been severely abused by a vet so I am in no position to change vets because he does like Dr. Natarajan and is comfortable going to Metro. As much as I miss Dr. LaFave there are still very good people there that care about the well being of my dude, and all other furry buds. read more

Brought 2 senior cats here (at different times) one 17 years old, the other 19 years old. BOTH CATS were DEAD in 24 hours! BOTH CATS were lively and receptive before their visit. It pains me to think what they did behind closed doors to our babies. They gouged us for money as much as they could; preying on our emotional connection and commitment to our family members. Our experiences included unfilled prescriptions upon arrival confirmed before we were enroute. Inner office miscommunication and even cutting one of our cats during a nail cutting AND NOT EVEN TELLING US (we only realized it when our baby was trailing blood throughoit our house)! If you intend to have and cherish your pets (especially cats) go elsewhere. PLEASE....u been warned. read more

We have a 10-week old goldendoodle puppy that we love with all our hearts. A few days ago, he vomited up both his breakfast and dinner. We called to ask what we should do, and they recommended that we bring him in immediately. When I arrived, an unsmiling nurse immediately handed me a proposed bill of costs amounting to $375. Line items included x-rays, anti-nausea medication, hydration shots... I was shocked and terrified. Fortunately, the receptionist that day was super understanding. After that nurse left, she reassured me that all of the items were just suggestions, and that I could wait and be seen by the vet before committing to anything. Dr. Cruz-Balser then squeezed us into our schedule. She was great with my pup while examining him and asked me lots of questions, which made me feel like she cared and wanted to get to the truth rather than just shill me for every penny. She also explained all of the items on the bill of costs that were recommended and why. Finally, she told me honestly that I could wait and see how he's doing tomorrow and bring him in for a follow-up, if I didn't feel comfortable subjecting him to so much treatment right away. We ended up going with the wait-and-see approach, and everything was fine. Our pup is back to his usual self with no more vomiting, and we were satisfied with the service we received--other than that one nurse. In the future, I would recommend they provide face-time with the vet first, before discussing costs. read more

For years, I have loved Dr. Jacobs for her veterinary skills. When I found out that she had opened a practice with another vet , Dr. June LaFave (who has an equally great reputation), I was eager to check this place out! With two of the three "kids" in tow, I walked in and was immediately impressed with the office space. It is classy and warm feeling... not like a "medical office". The walls have photos with animals in local Chicago areas and there is even a fire hydrant for the canine visitors (painted on a wall, thankfully). The office staff held a wealth of knowledge and they were more than happy to answer questions about the new space, as well as questions about my pets' well-being. They had general health visits and I decided on much-needed dental cleanings (which, to my surprise, were offered at a special price for their grand opening?!?!?!?!?). The cats cooperated fully for their visits and the staff told me that I could pick them up at my convenience. (Their hours are 7am-10pm AND they have FREE parking.... WHHHAAATTTT?!?!?!??) One cat had to have a small biopsy done and the other cat had the possibility of a tooth extraction.... so I expected to pay an extra cost (they gave me an estimate before any visit was scheduled) but, to my surprise, the tooth was able to be cleaned and the biopsy wasn't as bad as it could have been (as I guessed by my cat's spirits). I was thrilled by the competitive costs (Much less expensive than many other vet offices I have been to- not including the great dental deal) and the AMAZING care my family received here! Then again, I would expect nothing less from Dr. Kjerstin Jacobs. I first went to her when I had a sickly cat and I told her that quality of life was an issue for me when it came to the cat's healthcare. I let her know that I did not have a ton of money but my Kitty was a part of my family and I wanted her honest opinion as his disease progressed. She respected my wishes and gave me different options for the care of my Kitty. I never felt that she cheated or misled me. She never gave me false hope. She even told me when she thought that I had to do the most humane thing for my pet and let him go. I believe this to the point that I have brought her a total of three sickly animals (extremely sick) over the years in my faith of her veterinary skills - and she has never disappointed me (even when they have been beyond help, I knew that she would be their best hope). I have been screaming from the rooftops that I love Dr. Jacobs, so please forgive my tardiness in telling YOU about it! And, as a side note, I was a bit later than I planned to pick up my kids from their dental cleanings. Dr. June LaFave was there to discharge them and she was incredibly warm and helpful. All of my incessant questions on my cats' visit didn't phase her and she, and the entire staff, were wonderful. Even if you don't think you are in the market for a new veterinarian, you owe it to your furry family members to check this practice out!!! *SIGH* If only my own doctor's office was as inviting!!!! read more

The only reason I'm not giving them 1 star is because of their insanely awesome long hours! They really are available when you need a vet! The bad...keep in mind they're a business first, vet second. I brought my 13-year-old sick dog to them and 1) they tried to convince me to have my dog's teeth cleaned. First of all, he's 13. At this point, I am not about to put him to sleep just to have his teeth be clean for another couple years. My dog has had severe reactions to anesthesia and is incredibly sensitive to medicine (both of which the vet knew), yet she pushed this service. 2) she ran 4 x-rays when I thought they were running 1! That is a cost difference of a few hundred dollars. They did end up removing some of the extra cost, which was very nice. If you have an emergency and they're open, it could be worth it. read more

The patient education and follow ups were highly lacking. After extensive tests and $1,500 later, my dog was diagnosed with Cushings disease and a couple medications were prescribed, one of them being Vetoryl. Around this time I was in my first trimester of pregnancy and wasn't showing. Nonetheless, I later discovered on my own that Vetoryl is a Class X by the FDA. Meaning, I should not even touch the medication unless wearing gloves. I was never informed of this and unfortunately, I had a miscarriage. I'm not blaming them or the medication for my miscarriage, but I do think that all patients should be warned of the exposure effects on humans by the doctor and also since they sell the medications to you right there at the clinic. In their slight defense, the warning is on the box, but the warning was in small print and jumbled in with other warnings. Which I'm sure I'm not the only one not reading every small print warnings of every product I touch. Going back to the medication and treatment for Cushings. We gave our dog the medications and scheduled a follow-up exam. There were no improvements of symptoms and dosage was not adjusted. I was just told to adjust my dog's diet. Another two months pass, and we bring our dog in because the medication was not working and it was causing frequent diarrhea with bloody stool. We were the ones who had to request an increased dosage. We were told the diarrhea was likely the dog flu going around, even though we insisted there was blood in the stool. And antibiotics were given. The dosage increase seemed to work, but the diarrhea continued and our doggie was also throwing up at times. We told the vet it was the flu, just as we suspected due to the blood in the stool. We asked for options. We were told we can discontinue the medications and allow our doggie to live with the Cushings symptoms. Our dog has now passed and we plan to get another dog. I will not be returning to this place. I felt our concerns were not heard, our relaying of symptoms weren't accounted for, level of care was poor, and patient education was terrible. You really have to be your own advocate for medication dosage, follow ups and symptom here and I do not trust them. Besides that, the place was clean and the most I've had to wait for an appointment was 20 minutes. There is free parking on the northside of the building, which you have to enter through the alley from the westside of the building. read more

I feel I have a duty to recommend against Metropolitan Veterinary Center after my experience with them. I took my cat in for what seemed like a very serious illness, and the vet told me that "she has masses on both kidneys and on the liver" and "whatever it is, it's aggressive, and I give her a week" - This all sounds (especially to the emotional owner) like code for metastasized cancer. They told me it would cost $600 to run tests over several days. They gave me absolutely no indication of what I should be doing at home. Thinking it was hopeless, I took my cat home and prepared to say goodbye. In addition to the overcertain alluding towards cancer, they did mention that she almost certainly had fatty liver disease. What they failed to tell me, however, is that this is very treatable, even at home! I decided to get a second opinion about the kidneys, and thus saved my cat's life. My normal vet, Hyde Park Animal Hospital and Clinic, instructed me in the most important thing for my cat: giving her food and water via syringe to stabilize her until her appetite returns. After less than two weeks of force feeding, my cat now has her appetite back and has outlived Metropolitan Veterinary Center's estimate by a week already, and looks better than ever. My normal vet was also very taken aback by the certainty of MVC's finding of masses on three organs. They said they got two vets to give her physical exams and three vets to read the X-rays together just to make sure they hadn't missed anything, but say they can not find any mass on either kidney. To me, this shows a major point of irresponsibility on MVC's part to greatly exceed the level of certainty they could have over such things in a physical exam. When I got this cat at 21, I had hoped that she would be around to see my children someday, and now, with no help whatsoever from MVC, she just might do that! *update* After reading the Center's response, I feel like I would like to say one of my main points more succinctly. I believe that one of the most important parts of medicine is for the professional/specialist to help the non-professional/non-specialist make informed decisions, and this is something I did not feel prepared to do after my visit. After a very heavy comment like, "she has masses on both kidneys and on the liver", I would have very much appreciated hearing something like, "This could mean many things. Some of the possibilities are a, b, and c, although it is impossible to say right now. In the case of a, her prognosis and treatment could be x, in the case of b, it could be y, etc. Without hearing that the fatty liver disease might actually be quite treatable, it was difficult for me to justify the cost of diagnostic testing for a cat with a prognosis of a week. */update* read more

After 2 inconclusive visits to our kitty's longtime vet a week apart, his health was deteriorating fast and we had no diagnosis. His belly was getting gigantic. He was waddling, barely eating/drinking and sitting facing a wall (usually a super social guy). He needed imaging; the other vet didn't have the machines. On Friday they wanted us to wait the weekend so as to book us with their contracted mobile imaging specialist sometime the following week. I sought out a facility with on-site imaging for answers sooner than later. A google search and a call into MVC Friday night yielded a 12pm appointment on Saturday. After being greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable reception staff - and sitting beside a man with a puppy who expounded upon how good the place is, specifically Dr. Jacobs who he said had taken excellent care of their old, terminally ill dog throughout his life til he passed- we were taken in to see Dr. Jacobs early (for once I got to an appointment 15 minuted ahead of time). She palpated his stomach, said she felt a mass. The imaging results confirmed he had an aggressive intestinal tumor the size of a baseball and showed his tummy was full of fluids. Dr. Jacobs struck the seemingly impossible, perfect balance between concise candor and compassion. She told me directly that the only thing we could do was drain the fluids to buy us a few more days with Sebastian. I'm not totally onboard with animal euthanasia given they can't give us verbal consent; I told her this and asked if she truly thought he was suffering. She explained there was so much fluid pressing against his organs it was getting harder and harder for him to move, eat, drink and ultimately breathe (which I had already noticed happening) and that it would only get worse, more painful as more fluid would build up before he would pass naturally in, most likely, days. I didn't want to put him through drainage and more car rides just so we could have a little more time at his expense, so made the excruciating decision to put him down immediately. The entire staff couldn't have been nicer, more accommodating - they waited til the whole family could be there with him, let us take all the time we needed to say goodbye in a large private room and even took care of the tiniest details like thoughtfully suggesting we settle the bill beforehand and exit through a separate door so not to have to deal with credit cards and a lively reception area through our tears. Our hearts are heavy, and we miss him terribly; we are glad our sweet Sabby is at peace and that his end-of-life care was performed with such dignity. We will be enlisting MVC/Dr Jacobs for future furry friends' care once we're healed and ready to adopt again. Thank you so much for your gracious clarity during this tough time. read more

My dog Matcha and I recently moved to Chicago from NYC where we had an amazing vet, and right after we moved, Matcha got some sort of vulvar/vaginal infection. Not knowing which vet to go to, we went to the first one downtown that could squeeze us in. Three months, countless antibiotics and no definitive diagnosis later, Matcha was still not cured and I was feeling super depressed about the quality of vet care in Chicago. When the vet told us to do yet another round of antibiotics I decided it was time to get a second opinion. Lucky for me, I ended up finding Metro Vet. I called for an appointment with Dr. Jacobs, who I saw had stellar reviews on Yelp. I was expecting to have to wait a few weeks for an appointment, since she's one of the most senior vets at the practice, but was so grateful that she was able to squeeze me in within 2 days. During the appointment, she was super understanding and compassionate about my concerns, shared her experience treating other dogs with Matcha's symptoms and offered to do diagnostic tests to actually narrow down what caused Matcha's infection rather than blindly prescribe yet another round of antibiotics. For the first time since I moved to Chicago, I left the vet feeling reassured that Matcha was getting the best treatment. Even though it's a bit farther from where we live, I will definitely be switching Matcha's care over permanently to Metro Vet bc the level of care we receive there from Dr. Jacobs is worth it. read more

**Beware of Dr Balser** **Beware is Unnecessary Procedures** I've been coming to Metro Vet for 3 years now, and it has definitely changed in a horrible way. The fact that Dr Balser is allowed to handle animals & speak the way she does to pet owners is an outrage. There should never ever be a time in which I'm pressured over & over & over & over again to stick a needle in my dog's BLADDER to get urine when it DEFINITELY can be procured through normal urination. Keep in mind that my dog is healthy, and this was merely a wellness exam, so sticking needles unnecessarily into my dog's organs is abusive if it can be procured in non-invasive ways. Then after my final "no," she acted weirdly mad, rolled her eyes, and left abruptly never to be seen again during the visit. Super uncomfortable. I wish I had recorded the whole visit. This is also the 1st time I've felt like Metro Vet was only looking to get money out of me for unnecessary treatments. Not once was a full blown panel EVER recommended for my dog for the 3 years I've been coming. Why now? Why not immediately at my 1st visit when she was also still an old dog? No one had that answer, no one knew why NOW she needed a $300+ panel. Had I been provided with any facts, I would have felt better about it, but I left feeling that it was a last ditch effort to find something to charge me for since my dog is healthy and didn't need any treatment or medications. My dog's anal gland had just been expressed at home (on my couch, so I'm very aware), and Dr Balser decided to do it again and only pulled fecal matter out of my dog. She didn't ask, she just did it, and of course there's an extra charge for that which I never approved of in the first place. The vet tech had to keep running in & out to talk to Dr Balser about any question i had about the procurdure.. like several times. Why wasn't the Dr in there discussing this with me? It was again, super weird and unprofessional. I feel sick about subjecting my elderly dog to Dr Balser. Never ever again. Just totally unprofessional, uncomfortable, and left feeling taken advantage of. I was never treated this way by Dr Kjerston. Dr Balser does not belong in the business of handling animals or anything living. My trust is totally gone with the practice now. read more

We had our first experience with Metro Vet today under less than ideal circumstances, as our little one-eyed wonder dog was yelping (no pun intended) and crying when getting up. Needless to say, we were pretty worried and upset when we finally showed up at Metro Vet.*. While there was a wait since we walked in without an appointment and it seems that there were several other people with pet emergencies in line ahead of us, we made ourselves comfortable in the very nice waiting room. We saw Dr. LaFave and were beyond impressed with her and the fabulous vet tech (who's name escapes me at the moment) that worked with Cinnamon. Within a few minutes, we had a diagnosis, a plan of treatment (that included natural nutritional supplements in addition to some anti-inflamatories) and a recommendation to wait on the (more expensive) x-rays until we saw how our pup was doing in a week or so. Cinnamon is very vet anxious, and yet was very comfortable at Metro Vet. As we left, it was decided that Metro Vet was our new Vet, which is a pretty ringing endorsement (and we are people that have been taking their pet to the same Vet for about 4 years and were happy, so we weren't looking for a change!). Metro Vet is also very well priced for both the visit and the meds, and there was no additional charges for a same-day or emergency visit. The last selling point: we saw Stella and Chewy's treats as well as Wysong food in Metro Vet, and that speaks VOLUMES about the level of nutrition and preventative health care knowledge of the Vets. Super impressed! *our regular vet is closed on Sundays, and we were pretty nervous about the 24-hour emergency vet because when we called, the receptionist seemed more concerned with letting us know what the price range of a visit would be and that they "offer no payment plans so bring a check, cash or credit card" - that was not exactly the bedside manner we were gunning for while being stressed that our dog was going to end up paralyzed. Metro Vet was recommended by someone at Bentley's Dog Store, and we were relieved that they were open on a Sunday until 10pm (their hours are phenomenal!). To top it off, when we called the receptionist was amazingly friendly and listened while I word vomited what was going on. She assured me that I could bring her in as a walk in and someone would see her. When we arrived, hot and upset, she remembered us and was very gracious. read more

Monday was a sorrowful day in our home! Ms. Scarlett, my daughter's pet for 11 years had reached the end of her time with us. Early that morning we traveled to the Vet Center for end of life care. My daughter was heartbroken and in tears. The staff explained clearly and compassionately what options were left. Their demeanor was so kind. They gave us a room to spend some time with Ms. Scarlett. We were never rushed! My daughter received a grieving packet and was told to call any time! Ms. Scarlett went peacefully in my daughter's arms. I could not have asked for a more compassionate end. I am a Medical Doctor who would like these Doctors to teach my residents their Humane methods in dealing with people. Just don't. They treat you like family at first and then tell you you're trash. And for the record I paid every single bill to the clinic on time, and this was was surgeries, treatments the works. I've taken my pets to MVC, since the clinic first open. I recently recommended the clinic to my mother when her dog was diagnosed with cancer and he was treated at MVC. I called the clinic when my dog was having an allergic reaction the receptionist was absolutely horrible she was unprofessional,poorly spoken, disorganized the entire gambit. She claimed that I have never been to the clinic my mother has never been to the clinic -then later in the call records she l she was able to find some records. She refused even make an appointment to see my dog, lied about having a nurse speak to me ,then claimed the practice manager would need to call me back. For a practice of claims they treat your animal like family they don't. I never thought this would happen to me or my pet. To not even be offered an appointment after all the years of being a loyal customer and the numerous recommendations to people I have made is a bit disgusting. Just don't go here because when you need them they won't be there for you and your beloved pet. read more

This is the best Vet Clinic we have been to and we have been to several over the years with many special needs pets. They are thorough, very nice and really try hard to be fair with pricing. They will refer you immediately to somewhere else if your pet's injury is beyond their scope (torn ACL) without running a bunch of test and charging you for what they knew when you walked in the door. I can't say enough good things about this place. Our pets are our children and we feel really fortunate to have found such a great clinic for their health needs. read more

I had a minor emergency with my older dog whose primary vet is in the suburbs, so I decided to walk down (since I only live a couple blocks away) and give MVC a try. I could not have been more pleased with the experience. The staff is friendly, helpful and kind. Dr. LaFave is caring, sweet and outgoing and the facility is beautiful, clean and looks to be very well maintained. In talking to the person at the desk, I discovered that there's a lot of experience in the practice, which makes me very comfortable. Also though, they seem to have a handle on what it takes to stay in business (marketing with local businesses like Dunkin Donuts and the Weather Mark) which means they'll be around a while. Also, from what I understand, there's parking, which is at a premium everywhere and their hours are ultra convenient for anyone who, y'know, works for a living. Dr. LaFave took great care of my old guy, patched him up and sent him home with pain meds, antibiotics, a cone of shame as well as a few extra scheckles in my wallet and most importantly peace of mind. My dogs have a new primary vet. If you're a pet owner in the South Loop or environs, I suggest you give them a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

But the level of service and care from Dr. LaFave and Dr. Jacobs, plus the deeply compassionate, smart, and willing staff, are teaching me just how much more I could be doing in my life to make others happy. As a business, MetroVet is a standout in a field that often seems more concerned with booking the next appointment and selling more prescriptions and dog treats than it does about taking care of those closest to us. MetroVet is more than a clinic; it's a wellness center. Whether it's basic procedures or end-of-life care, I constantly find myself talking about this place as though it were a human hospital. I wish I could have doctors like this. I wish I could be nurtured, educated, and cared for in this way. You love your pets. More than anything. You say you want to give them the best. First, I absolutely loved the service and price at MVC. Second, anyone who feels like they had a bad experience should really give it a second chance. Finally, I'm going to recount my very long story, so you should skip this review if you don't have time. My dog is a 3.5 years old yorkie mix. She's never had dental procedures done, and I figured I was doing fine with brushing her teeth weekly and using gel/foam stuff in-between. Her breath has been stinky for months, but I kept masking it with the minty gel stuff that's highly rated on Amazon. Finally, on Monday night, I came home and found her twitching her mouth as if trying to get something out the back of her tooth. Opened her mouth and found a lot of plaque on the inside of the teeth. Found a vet in Lakeview that was well-rated on Yelp and got an appointment the very next morning. The vet in Lakeview said my dog had to get 2 teeth extractions, possibly up to 6. Except her quote on the high end was over $1000 (plus $100 for pre-op labs, which are not required for her because she's still young but is recommended). I found that so crazy, since places in Madison, WI were quoting me $500, except I can't drive up to Madison until the weekend, and vets generally only do procedures on weekdays. So I called the Anti-Cruelty Society hoping to find a more cost-friendly option, and they referred me to 2 cheaper clinics. The estimate from one of the clinics was dirt cheap, estimated $200. Except that clinic was previously shut down by the city in 2011. That's a huge red flag obviously. Finally, I found MVC, the only place in Chicago that would give me a quote without requiring me to bring her in for yet another office visit with yet another $60 exam fee. Their quote over the phone was right around what the places in Madison were quoting, and they got me in the very next day (called Wednesday morning, got in Thursday morning). Their website was so informative, it made me feel more comfortable about taking my dog to a less expensive vet. I was Dr. LaFave's very first patient Thursday morning. She was very reassuring when we met, and said my dog's teeth were better than what she was expecting. She then gave me a formal estimate, which was approximately what I got over the phone. They even waived the exam fee because I mentioned the negative yelp review. So I left my sweet dog in their hands and went to work. Dr. LaFave called me around 12:30 to update me that the procedure was done and that they ended up having to take out 6 teeth (although some of the teeth were different from what the first vet told me to expect would be extracted), but there was no difference in my estimate. I ended up picking my dog up around 5:45, because there was heavy traffic, but I didn't have to worry at all because they're open until 10! The assistants and Dr. LaFave were both very helpful in answering my post-op questions. When I asked her what I should do about dog food, since my dog has been on kibble. She advised me on how to soften the kibble and even gave me some canned dog food (no charge) to hold me over for a few days! They definitely didn't have to do that, but I was very appreciative nonetheless. My dog was wagging her tail when she saw me, but not whimpering or anything, which tells me they treated her well. If their prices remain this reasonable, they will definitely be my go-to vet in Chicago. My dog is still in recovery mode, but so far, no complaints at all. :) read more

Another yelp Victory! I found this amazing place because I was browsing yelp when my kitty got hurt. I have an indoor cat that found her way outside. I found her hiding in a box on my porch badly hurt. Her head has clearly had some serious trauma. I spent the day calling every vet any of my friends knew, but they were all extremely expensive. Normally it wouldn't matter too much to me where we went because shots and checkups are pretty cheap but I knew Khaleesi was going to need a lot of help which = lots of money I don't have. After hours of looking I decided to finally check yelp and I found this lovely gem! It was only $65 to come in and it had 5 stars?? AWESOME. So I brought her in on very short notice, they fit me in between customers. I really appreciated it, and so did Khaleesi (not immediately, but later she did). The front staff is very nice and compassionate. The vet was extremely nice and informative. She told me the cat was either likely hit by someone with something, or something heavy had fallen on her head. She gave me a list of things she suggested I do, but told me which were not 100% needed if cost was an issue. Luckily Khaleesi will be just fine and is at home recovering and all is well. I can say that if it weren't for this place I'm not sure I could have afforded to get her looked at and treated. Thank you for all you do! I would def recommend these guys to anyone who needs vet care. They are open 7 days a week until 10 pm! No more trips to the emergency vet clinic. I cannot stress enough how much I love this place. I had to bring in my 21 year old cat for a visit because he got bit by something and has very sensitive skin. With his age being a factor, of course I didnt want to wait long. I called and was informed that they were booked for days, however, to come in as a walk in and they would help as soon as they could. I went in the next day and the place was immaculate and welcoming. The front desk staff and doctors were friendly and professional. I didnt wait very long at all and Harley was seen, assessed and his treatment explained to me in explicit detail. They were gentle with him and you can tell that they are all animal lovers. I think I was in an out of there in less than an hour. An added bonus is that the services were EXTREMELY REASONABLE. I can tell you right now that every person in the office makes this as easy an experience as possible. read more

came here for a annual visit for my dog, this will be our new vet. Granted my puppy is healthy and has no major health issues, so I can not comment on their abilities as far as that is concerned, but I can say that It was easy to get an appointment. They have their own parking lot and lots of street parking, it is very clean, the staff are very friendly. Our vet seemed very straight forward, and was easy to work with. This was our main vet from the time they opened. We got personal attention for our dog and I had so much trust in this place. Both of the founding vets were accessible and they were the only vets there. The front desk, the techs and everyone seemed like a cohesive, coordinated family. Dr. LaFave took a special liking to our dog and we appreciated that. Dr. Jacobs performed excellent emergency stitches and we were very, very happy and felt a great trust in the place. But in the last few years, we found our original vets much less accessible and the newer vets to be incompatible with everything we had liked about the practice. One of the younger vets, someone who was supposedly trained in allergies, refused to even discuss alternatives to steroids and made ME perform an ear culture on my own dog! And they still charged me for it! That was really the moment when I just decided we had to start looking elsewhere because I want to have a relationship with a vet, not see a different one every time and be treated like an imposition. I do feel bad about it because MetroVet was really there for us for so long and I have referred lots of people over the years. But I guess I need more than the practice can accommodate at this time. read more

Started coming here as a friend told me about their puppy package which is a great deal if you have a new pup. It included all vaccines, appointments, and a spay/neuter. They have been great to visit and even though my dog is past the puppy package, we will continue to come (even with it being out of the way). Not to mention it's hard to find a vet that's open 7 days week, 7am-10pm which makes it easy to schedule an appointment when needed. I also appreciate they almost always follow up the day after a visit to see how your furbaby is doing and answer any one-off questions you may have thought of after you've left the office. This place used to have/still has some amazing doctors. However, service has been terrible lately, and getting worse. The place is chronically understaffed. The staff refuses to perform anything outside of very overpriced regular visits/administer shots. They absolutely unsuitable as a primary care provider to an active pet, where some amount of irregular/on demand care is required. Avoid if you can. read more

Wonderful place! I have gone twice to Metro Vet and have been thoroughly pleased both times. The first time we visited we were actually referred by an emergency animal hospital near our home. Our small chihuahua was giving birth at home on a Saturday around 4am when her puppy became stuck half way out, rear-end first, we took her to an emergency animal hospital. After hours of trying to pull out the puppy they decided they could not get the puppy out (by this point the puppy was already dead because of suffocation) so they advised operating her, the only downside to that was that they were charging around $3000 before they even began, this was not even including the visit fee or the x-rays that were taken. Since we did not have the money right away, they referred us to Metro Vet because they take emergencies and because they were the only vet clinic that opened that early on a Saturday. Once we arrived at Metro Vet they took our dog in right away and in no less than 20 minutes they were able to dislodge the puppy and save our chihuahua's life! In the end we payed around $600, including meds and the spaying of our dog since we did not want our dog to go through the same again. The second time we have gone was because our other dog, a husky, had her paw and front arm attacked by another dog and at the same time had a fence injury. The vet and staff here are very polite, comprehensive, and just know what they're doing! This would be our regular vet if it wasn't over an hour away. All in all this is a great place for anyone to bring their pets, especially for emergencies since regular animal emergency hospitals can get pretty expensive and to add on to that they do not at all seem like those vets that try and charge ridiculous amounts for unnecessary procedures ;) I highly recommend Metro Vet, our dogs are happy and healthy today thanks to them! read more
