What can I say - we didn't expect to ever need to visit here and we certainly didn't expect to leave here with an empty collar. Our 12 year old Lab didn't eat his breakfast. For you fellow people with Lab roommates, you know what an emergency this is. We were able to call, get checked in over text message and get triaged right away. The entire staff was so kind, empathetic and very very professional. Utilizing all the equipment; no guesswork and clear communication allowed us to make informed decisions. Our vet (I wish I got her name) was such a straight shooter and very very frank in our options. We ended up allowing crossing in the most graceful way available. Unfortunately, we've visited this location twice in the past few years and most recently had to say goodbye to our 10 year old corgi who had cancer. This team is incredible. They are realistic and caring. They share their knowledge with you and allow you to make the decisions that are best for your animal and family. I might have misheard his name but we've had Dr Grossman twice now and he's A+. He knew it was time for our pup to go but the way it was explained to us was so reassuring that we were doing the right thing and it was our call. The techs are all amazing. They scrounged up a final meal of nutter butters, whipped cream, and marshmallows for our sweet girl. My neighbors and I found a cat that was hit by a car. One person witnessed it. The car didn't stop. The kitty was in horrible shape and we suspected she was a stray. We finally got her into a carrier and I took the kitty to this VEG located at 1114 S Clinton. They were the kindest people ever. They took her in right away. I'm almost positive the kitty would need to be put to sleep. It was an upsetting ordeal, but I know I did the right thing taking the kitty there. Our sweet canine companion of 14 years had an emergency care need. I contacted VEG and they were responsive and compassionate. They texted me the check-in information so there would not be a delay when I arrived. Upon arrival, they assisted me in bringing my pet into the facility, and seeing the urgency, brought us into a room immediately. The doctor and entire team that addressed her needs were so professional, so warm and so understanding of what both my pet and I were going through. My experience here was absolutely wonderful until the last few minutes. VEG really gives the impression that they care a lot about consent and transparency and care for my pet, and they were very gentle and sweet with my dog, but the experience ended up being more like going to a used car dealership. I am aware that emergency veterinary visits are expensive. I budgeted for that and walked into emergency care with the knowledge that it would be expensive. Money was tight for me at the time, but I knew it was important to prioritize my pet. While I was there, the vet and the technicians were great with my dog, who had violently bloody stool. I had a great conversation with the vet, who recommended tests to rule things out. I agreed to them, and they brought out a tablet with a breakdown of services and costs and asked me to consent to the treatment and costs. Yes, it was more than it would be if I had gone to his regular vet, but I was prepared for that because this was an ER. The total was $700 for the visit and the x ray and I was perfectly happy to pay that. I confirmed that on their tablet. After the tests ruled out anything serious, he was cleared to go home. The vet came in and told me they also "gave" him some Cerenia for nausea "just in case" and fluids to make up for dehydration, as well as a probiotic. I had a pack of Cerenia and Forte probiotics at home so I could have given him that on my own, but they had already administered it to him in the other room. I thanked them, took my dog, and headed out. As I was leaving, the receptionist halted me and told me I had to settle the balance. This was confusing to me, because I had already paid for the test and the visit. Turns out, they had added some costs that I had *not* consented to - an extra $400 for the Cerenia, fluids, and probiotic. I could not turn down these costs, because they had already been administered, even though I had these items at home. By the way, 3 Cerenia were less than $20 purchased from my regular vet (who already charges more than online), and VEG charged me $158.32, and 14 priobiotics are less than $10, while VEG charged me $98.95. The fluids were intravenous, but he wasn't even dehydrated and I had pet electrolytes at home as well which had been given to me his vet. And more important than the price is the fact that I hadn't even consented to these items because I had them at home. Later I called VEG and also emailed them, politely expressing how uncomfortable I was with the situation and asked them to review it. They ignored both my messages - there was not even an acknowledgment of my concern. I am giving an extra star because, after all, they did provide needed veterinary care for my pet and were available when we needed them. But I think my experience with their billing practices (as well as their complete contempt when I reached out to them afterwards) has seriously undermined my trust with them. There are only two pet ERs in the city, so they get away with a lot, but I would beware when you walk in because they are extremely dishonest and manipulative about their policies and will take advantage of someone who is worried about their pets welfare. read more

If I could give VEG 100 stars, I would gladly do so. My Cane Corso stopped eating 2 days before I decided that it was time to take her in for a simple emergency examination. What a place! Due to my pet's often uncomfortable reaction to other dogs, and the hospital's shift change, we were placed in a private waiting room where we were attended by the nurse/caretaker until the doctor was able to come speak with us. What can I say about Dr. Roundy?? After feeling my baby's belly, she immediately rolled the ultrasound machine into the room so as to not disturb our Duchess too much. Dr. Roundy, with the utmost gentleness and compassion, shared the grim news. A tumor in the spleen and intestines. We had to make a tough decision that no one expected that day. My Duchess pranced in like a majestic black stallion, and by the time she realized that she needn't keep up appearances any longer we were placed in a candle lit room, with a soft dog bed and an immaculate fuzzy blanket to keep her comfortable. (We were even offered a jar of Hershey's kisses.) You could see the (large) staff's faces expressing sadness and some shock for this unexpected outcome. No one saw this coming upon our arrival. Least of all me. We were encouraged to take our time with her and were given a small remote control pad to ring for when we felt ready. I was allowed to lie beside her. I took her into my arms and held her head near my heart and the propofol was gently administered for what was to come next. Why am I sharing this story? Because I want VEG and it's wonderful staff to know of their valuable kindness and professionalism during a very difficult time there and for you the reader to know that there is no better place in Illinois that will care for your pet. I hope that you never have to do something this, but if you do...the Veterinary Emergency Group is second to none. My Duchess felt their love, even if only if only for a few brief hours before leaving me forever. Thank you everyone for being there. P.S. This time, I experienced the same kind and efficient care and it put my heart at ease after a pretty traumatic event. Dr. Eisele and the night team from 5/1-5/2 were exceptionally wonderful. We brought our dog in around 10:00 PM and she ended up needing an emergent procedure. Despite the circumstances we felt comfortable and at ease the entire time. The care my dog received was phenomenal and we are so glad this facility is in our neighborhood. I was able to stay by my dogs side the entire time minus the actual procedure but was still able to view the surgery from a window. Dr. Eisele even provided me with a chair that was tall enough to see through the window. We were initially told our dog might have to stay for 48 hrs after surgery but luckily her total stay was about 14 hours. However, had she needed to stay that long we would've been able to come and go no matter the time and be with our dog. They even said there was a room available for us to sleep in comfortably with our dog if needed. When it came to payment, they require money down but they were able to work with us and offer flexibility with the money we put down. Luckily we do have insurance so that played a part in the finances. After our regular vet received the records from VEG (super promptly) we were told by our regular vet that they wouldn't have been able to provide the same level of service as VEG due to limitations of the regular vet facility so it was a good thing we went to see VEG. Again we are so grateful to this team and for making a potentially traumatic experience into a manageable and comforting one. My little Abby was seen from 07/24 to her last day on 07/30. She has signs of infection and lethargy/ non appetence. I brought her in to VEG where she was diagnosed with pneumonia. Sadly she was not improving and was taken back 4 days after discharge. Upon walking in even the young lady at the registration desk remembered her name, as well as the tech/ doctors on duty. Her prognosis was not looking good. Dr.Grossman was very straightforward about my baby's diagnosis and my choices to move forward. I had to come to a sad decision to put my baby to rest. I came home to my 13 year old dog collapsing and in a lethargic state. I googled nearest emergency vet closest to me and south loop emergency vet came up. They took me as soon as I came in. The doctors and nurses were absolutely wonderful and compassionate. I was in absolutely panic. The doctor explain the tests and X-rays to see what's going on and keep me informed. The staff not only kept me informed but allowed me to watch the X-ray from the window and be by his side the whole time. Mix feelings about this place I was here two months ago after discussing my experience with other pet owners and medical professionals outside of this place I was motivated to write this review. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes here. I was ready to be presented with the next step for his care like where to take him next (like a specialist)or the steps I would need to care for him at home. Instead the doctor sat there made it seem like my cat was going to die (which he was if I did not take him to the specialist) because she made the assumption herself that I couldn't afford the treatment. Was the treatment expensive of course but instead of like saying hey go here and start treatment she sat there and told us "we are not bad people for putting our pet down". That made us feel like he had no hope and we should put him down because she was more motivated to put him down than to show/give us a referral or a list of specialist. We took him home with pain meds from them and no list of specialist. The doctor was afraid that my cat would not make it overnight her words not mine but again no directions to where to go next. We called for the list of specialist because it was never email to us we took him right away and assumed the worse news again. The doctor at MEDVET did the tests came to talked to us and first thing she said was " I have seen worse and he's going to be ok if you start treatment" which was the biggest relief because when they diagnosed him here the doctors tone, demeanor, and way of presenting the case made it seem like we had no hope and where horrible people for trying to keep our cat alive. A couple days at the vet and my cat is at home living his life with his freestylelibre sensor. Is owning a pet expensive YES but some people like me would do anything for them. read more

This review is in regards to our experience during the night shift (3rd shift). Brought in our cat for a urinary blockage past 11pm. We were shocked staff were allowed to eat their meals on exam tables in the pet triage area. In the exam room, the veterinarian, Dr. Schultz, attempted in expressing urine and dislodging any obstruction from our male cat. Her assistant held our cat on the floor (not on an exam table), but they couldn't hold our cat properly, so my spouse had to assist. We think it is unprofessional to have owners assist in any of the care/treatments at vet facilities because owners are not trained at all in handling pets at vet facilities. Imagine going to a hospital and asking a family member to assist in a blood draw, how unprofessional is that? The patient triage area was also uncomfortable. It is an open area with different exam tables. We felt uncomfortable because we were not instructed where to sit or stand while our pet was vitaled. I think pets should be vitaled in rooms because if there are multiple pets being vitaled in an open area, that will cause more stress on sensitive pets like our cat, who is not comfortable around big dogs. To add insult to injury, some staff members were eating a meal on a different exam table while pets are being triaged. Again, not a good look. The invoicing practice is also dismaying. They text you an "estimate" and you are expected to pay through text before they begin any treatments or further care. I had to question all of the estimated charges before I accepted because they needed explanation. Do question the "miscellaneous" cost because the provider explained that it is to cover "potential medications" and any services not actually perform will be refunded back to our card. Umm what? Why not charge for actual services rendered at the end of visit after accepting care plan, like other animal hospital do. It is a pay-first-treat-later type of deal. And the transaction is done by owners paying through their phone with a credit/debit card. Again, a very odd experience. Our discharge paperwork did not contain any diagnosis information, or any after-visit instructions. It is only listed the cost of services. Seems like their ethos is cost-centered instead of patient-centered. After a 4-hour visit, our cat did not improve. A few hours later we decided to go to take our pet to BluePearl Hospital in Skokie instead, where the visit, care, professionalism and outcome were far more positive than at VEG's. read more

My cat, Hamlet, had a bladder stone in his urethra. An ER vet diagnosed this. This is a life-threatening condition for cats. That vet couldn't do the surgery to remove it. They referred me to VEG. The one closer to me didn't have a surgeon, so they referred me to one a bit farther away. These people were golden. Dr Curlin took over his care and she was marvelous. Kevin, the tech who was on duty when I arrived, worried and with a sick cat, was so calming. It's a weekend. I've never been so scared for the life of my cat. I think her name was Laura or Lauren, who was at the front desk, was a ray of sunshine. They kept me informed every step of the way on what they were doing. No question I asked got me less than a full and complete answer. I had been, at that point, up for 2 days straight with only 45 minutes of dozing and they were so kind and understanding. They got Hamlet to pass the stone and everyone was so excited that no surgery would be needed for that. I think it was Kevin who came running over to me. "He passed it! He passed it!" Sunday, they cleaned all the stones from his bladder and explained recovery. Monday, Dr Quigley was warm and reassuring as I took my groggy boy home. I will recommend to my regular vet that people contact VEG for ER care and even though the closest one is a half hour/40 minute drive from me, it's where I'm going, should I need ER services again. Double paws up for the care Hamlet and I received. People are going to ask about the cost. What I needed is expensive, period. I was referred to another ER vet to have this done and their prices were $5k MORE than what I paid here. Plus, the woman who answered the phone there sounded like she wanted to be anywhere other than at her job. VEG people were kind and caring from the "Thank you for calling VEG. This is [name]. How can I help you?" Through, "Let me get the doors for you" as Hamlet and I left. ER services cost more but I got complete value for what they did for Hamlet. read more

My mom and I brought our dog Lady there as a recommendation from our family vet. The family vet diagnosed Lady with dka. He called vet emergency group in South loop ahead of time because dka is a medical emergency. I am a fourth year medical student and my mom is a nurse. I know enough to know dka is an emergency. However, Lady wasn't triaged quickly. There was an emergency and the vet was busy. I tried to be understanding and told my mom not to complain because things go like this in healthcare. However,as I waited for an hour, it dawned on me that dka is always treated quickly.I started to get irritated. However, the vet came in and said that my dog would likely be okay in a few days. She did warn that there are unforseen consequences,but she seemed optimistic about Lady's recovery. The next day, the vet called and said Lady declined and needed to go elsewhere. I got there to find Lady kussmaul breathing,fighting for her life. Her bicarbonate was 2. Her situation was more complicated because you cant fluid overload a dog with questionable heart condition.I was rushed out of there with an unstable dog. My mom was at work,so Nikki the nice vet nurse helped me find uber pet. Lady nearly died in that uber. I finally got her to medvet,where she was critical. We put her down the next day. There is blame everywhere, from not going to our family vet sooner to having to make difficult calls for Lady's care. But vet emergency group was supposed to triage her right away. They saw that her vitals were stable,but ignored the fact that she wasn't walking/was lethargic on physical examination. 1.Please get more staffing. I see this all the time in healthcare. My pet needed help. 2. For all animal hospitals, please consider treating,then sending the bill. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing your pet sick and the vet wants 7k before giving fluids,bicarb,labs. Have some dignity. We came in at 11 pm and did not leave until 3 am. They were severely understaffed on veterinarians, and the vet techs/nurses were very disorganized and distracted. They could not stay on top of things, chatting and joking around while I and several others waited HOURS to receive help. A family in the waiting room with us waited more than two hours to get their discharge papers, something that should take minutes, if the staff had any sense of urgency and organization. I understand that things happen, there are nights where many urgent needs occur, but this went beyond just being a tough night. The staff needs to get their **** together. One of them even took an IV bag and slid it across the floor. Excuse me? If you have time to mess around and do something so unhygienic, you have time to get us out of here sooner. I'm never returning to this location if at all possible, because I have better chances of helping my pet on my own instead of paying hundreds to wait hours for a damn x-ray. I clearly feel taken advantage of by this establishment because I took my dog in last night when I discovered she had a very swollen right eye after being in boarding for a few days. I am a physicians, assistant, and trained in assessing similar injuries in humans. This group recommended a series is a complex diagnostic test that were costly and because it was late and I had just been discharged from the hospital myself I was fatigued and extremely concerned about my pet so without analyzing the situation too closely myself, I agreed to do what they suggested at the end. It ended up that I spent over $600 to have my dog be diagnosed with pink eye, more commonly known as conjunctivitis. The elaborate test testing to check ocular pressures was not warranted in this case and what A represented a savings of another $200. When I called to question this, the receptionist berated me for challenging the estimate and encouraged me to seek care elsewhere on the next visit. That won't be a problem I won't be taking advantage of twice. read more

Having been to about five veterinary clinics in my dog's life I have had mediocre and wonderful experiences. THIS WAS ONE OF THE WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES. We came in on a Friday about noon after calling the local vets in my area, which did not have appointments until the following week. My dog had an irritated eye since the beginning of the week that had gotten worse by Friday. Although her visit was not life threatening it raised some concern for me and thought it needed to be seen as soon as possible so I took her to VEG. The total time of our visit was over 3 hours, I didn't mind as I have waited 3 hours before anyone even seeing my dog. At VEG as soon as we arrived a vet tech/nurse performed a triage on my pup (vitals and asked about the reason for our visit). The tech was nice and showed care for our pet. The facility is an open floor plan with a few exam rooms. Everything was clean and organized. We were taken to the waiting area where we were informed there was drinks and snacks. While there I received a text with a link to register. Dr Slaughter came into the waiting area, asked about my concern, took down her medical history and checked her eye. The dr went over what she thought it could be and suggested 3 test to find the issue. She then explained she would send me a quote and explained the charges I could expect. I received the quote and was able to consent electronically and pay then and there. Dr Slaughter also checked in to see if I had other questions. 2 of the 3 suggested test were performed on my dog inside one of their individual exam rooms. The Dr shared she did not think the third test was necessary after the others were performed. She gave me the diagnosis and told me her treatment plan. She also asked if I had more questions. The nurse returned with the medication and reviewed how it needed to be administered and asked if I had questions. Everyone was thorough, and gave me the opportunity to ask questions at any time. I came in here in total distraught after my younger sister's puppy took quite a fall from a tall height while under the care of a family member. They took such good care of my sister's puppy, and treated me and the puppy with such compassion, so much that they immediately gained my trust with the care of the puppy. I will say that you'll probably spend the whole day here, so don't expect to get anything else done in your day if you decide to come. But the level of care was so attentive that I was just happy that my sister's puppy was getting the care that he needed. If your pet is ever having a medical emergency, bring him here! They were SO great when my dog had an awful stomach bug and couldn't keep anything down. I called in advance and talked with a vet almost immediately; the vet gave me advice on how quickly to get there and what to do to keep my little guy comfortable until we got there. Once we arrived, there was practically no wait and I stayed with my little buddy the entire time. Before doing any expensive tests or procedures that were not emergent, they texted me a quote to review with all the prices included and talked me through what they thought was necessary vs "nice to have" and the pros/cons of each option. I was able to stay with my dog the entire time except for less than 5 minutes while he was getting an X-ray, and appreciated having the opportunity to talk with the vet and techs as they were checking out my dog and figuring out the best course of treatment. I think my dog also appreciated having Mom close by while he was getting poked and prodded while he didn't feel good. I hope you never need an emergency vet, but if you do, Veterinary Emergency Group is an amazing option that's open 24/7 and just goes SO above and beyond what I would ever expect. Quite simply the best veterinary clinic EVER!!! Here's why. Around 2:30 AM, I found a tick on my dog's neck and I was too afraid to remove it myself, so I decided to put Leo - my dog, in his cage for peace of mind. Unfortunately, Burnham Park Animal Hospital and South Loop Animal Hospital do not accept walk-ins, but the receptionist recommended and provided the contact information for VEG - Veterinary Emergency Group. VEG is located in the South Loop on Clinton St. next to the Chipotle and their exterior street signage was easily visible making it simple to locate. Parking was just as easy parking in their lot. Walking into the clinic, you'll notice that it's very clean and welcoming - looks newly built. The clinic layout seems very well-planned keeping the patient top of mind. The waiting room was large with floor-to-ceiling storefront windows allowing a lot of natural sunlight. They also have a TV, coffee, and other condiments while you're waiting. Mandy, the receptionist greeted me upon entering with her bubbly personality and made me feel welcome by quickly building rapport and empathy towards my situation during the check-in process. The entire staff was friendly and awesome! It seems like they have a very fun and friendly work environment. When I walked to the back with my dogs, we were introduced to other members of the team - Dr. Roundy, Dr. Cohen, and Lexi - the Veterinary Nurse. Lexi took my dog - Leo, and used a special tool called a "tick-nado" (not sure if she coined that term herself), or "Tick Tornado" but it came right out! Luckily, the tick didn't burrow into Leo's neck, but they put the tick in a test tube filled with IPA to show me. After extracting the tick, Lexi was kind enough to check the rest of Leo's body for more ticks knowing how afraid I was of ticks. I know ticks aren't a big deal, but seeing how much love Leo and I received from the Veterinary Emergency Group - South Loop shows me the type of care they'd provide during a more life-threatening situation. I can't thank them enough for being so kind, compassionate, and empathetic towards Leo and me. I highly recommend them for any type of urgent veterinary care. read more
