Great place to climb as long as you have a car to get there. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and there is tons of wall space for top-roping and bouldering. Try going on Sunday or Monday night to avoid the crowds. read more

MetroRock is one of my favorite places in Boston. It never gets boring because new routes get put up fairly regularly. With the new expansion it accommodates more people than you think can possibly fit in there, but if you want to avoid the big crowds go after 8 PM on weekdays. If you never climbed before try to score a Groupon/LivingSocial/GiltCity/etc. deal where you'll get an intro lesson, gear rentals and one month membership for ~$50. Apart from keeping you fit (if you try hard!), climbing at Metro will give you a chance to do some great people watching. I've spotted Lou Ferrigno look-alike, Ken Jeong look-alike and just a bunch of random colorful characters. Go do it! read more

Great facility, though excessively crowded and under-staffed. Also, too many kids running rampant and taking up space for those of us who are actually semi-serious about climbing. (It might just be that I'm used to working at the BU Fitrec climbing wall, where very few kids ever rear their ugly little heads). Boston Rock Gym is a better option if you prefer a little more peace and quiet while tackling that 5.10c that's been kicking your ass for the last month. As much as I wanted chocolate for Valentine's Day, I wanted to do something out of the box. Instead exchanging teddy bears and gazing admiringly into each others eyes, we reserved our spots at MetroRock's a rope's course. Step 1: Learn about harnesses and safety. Put on ugly helmets that protect your head for the worst-case scenario. Pray that you don't get head lice. Step 2: Climb a structure that reminded me of a fort and bunk beds. Step 3: Begin the terrifyingly awesome ropes course, which is full of swings, tubes, nets, tight ropes, and rock walls. Step 4: Zip line down the course!!!!! The best part was obviously the zip line because it was by far the easiet, least exhausting step. By the end, I had adjusted to being dozens of feet in the air and felt confident enough to push off, gliding to the bottom. I would absolutely recommend the rope's course to others but there were some challenges. The first, is I am quite short (5'2) and found some unique challenges to being shorter limbed. This didn't stop me and I was able to make it through all the obstacles but it certainly made some of them more difficult. While I frequently work out, I certainly do not spend a substantial amount of time working out my arms. I was quite sore the following day or two. It may be helpful to do a couple push ups and pullups leading up to your visit. Who would have thought that I would have train for Valentine's Day celebrations? read more

Went to the Littleton location, and there's not a page for it on yelp yet. This was my first time ever going to a rock gym, and one of the assistants, Joe, made me and my boyfriends experience phenomenal. As new climbers, he made us feel so welcomed I to the community and helped us our whole visit with pointers and tips, even just hung out with us talking and discussing his experience. Honestly without him we would've been a little clueless and nervous, but he made everything so much easier. So thank you Joe forsaking our first visit so amazing!!! read more

This is the best indoor climbing gym I've ever seen. It's less than a year old and they spared no expense during construction. They rotate the routes regularly and the bouldering area is exceptional. It's $12 a visit with your own gear, $16 with rentals. Monthly membership passes are also available. read more

At this point I've been to MetroRock over 50 times and have also tried the other climbing gyms near Boston (Boston Rock Gym and Rockspot). MetroRock is definitely the best of the three. Positives: The walls aren't overly cluttered - At some gyms I feel like you look at the wall and they are over filled with holds and tape making it difficult to spot holds for the climb you are on. This is not the case here. Frequently changing routes - The routes are updated every week or so(for bouldering, not as frequent for top roping) and there are plenty of routes for all skill levels. Negatives: Crazy crowded during the week after 6:30 - Even though most of the climbers are nice and polite it still sucks having tons of people around, especially if you are new. I've brought friends who have never climbed before and they said they were intimidated from having so many people around. This is not as big of an issue if you come during the weekends. Tips/Random: If you've never climbed before, take the intro class. I think it is like 50 bucks and includes all gear and the pass for the day (If you can get a groupon even better, they seem to put them up once every few months). The class will teach you all you need to know to start top roping(climbing on the big walls attached to a rope), but the most important thing is top roping is MUCH easier than bouldering (climbing on the smaller walls without a rope). If you start with bouldering it won't be as fun and you will get easily discouraged because of the difficulty. Some people have said the staff is unfriendly. I'm 50/50 on this. Sometimes I go and they are nice, every now and then they aren't as nice. But the climbers are friendly, other than the occasional a**, but they are rare. Its a great hobby and this is a good place to learn (although expensive). read more

Been climbing at Metro since it opened, and I'm there alot. It's a good place for both new and experienced climbers. The routes are interesting and get changed often, with a good range of climbs from kids/beginner to challenging leads. The staff are friendly, and there is a community atmosphere among the clientelle. The gym also hosts a number of social and charity events which I really appreciate. There are also two different levels of challenge courses. Check out the one for little kids, it's way cool! All and all, a good place to climb no matter what your level. read more

I've been going here for a few months now. I've noticed that all the people are really nice. The only thing i don't like about it is that some of the boulder problems seem to be put up purely for macho/ego/strength boosts instead of skill. I like the variations of walls they have. This place makes me love to climb. I left a star out because their memberships seem a bit expensive and also the day pass with out renting anything and a student discount its still steep after going for a few months. Metro Rock got me through my first winter in Boston. I have my own gear, got a 3-month membership, and went at much as possible. The only reason I stopped was because I have no car and my former climbing partner has a different schedule now. And I miss it tons. Wonderful place for beginners and first-timers with 0 experience. Although this is my 2nd time rock climbing, I'm still not belay certified, but it's okay, no problem. They have these things called auto-belays that do the work for you so there's no need for a 2nd individual to help you out. Very convenient. Would be a wonderful place to bring a kid as well, not like a 5 year old but maybe a 10 year old. This area has 4 auto-belays for beginners, all the way in the back, and it's as simple as it gets. Then there's a few in the middle as well that are a lot more challenging and a lot more higher LOL. Bouldering is also a nice option for those who are too cheap to rent out a harness LOL. There's plenty of crash pads and so many different areas to climb. These are a ton more challenging imo. I could only do the super basic ones and I didn't have enough strength to do more. Glad to have a rock climbing center nearby Malden! Although it's located in a weird sketchy area, the facility is very nice and spacious! It's about a 10 minute walk from Wellington Station however. The address is also a little wonky and my Uber driver had a little trouble finding the place LOL. It's right next to Skyzone doe. For an auto-belay harness, shoes, and admission, it costed me $26 as a student, so it was a pretty good price. read more

I'm new to rock climbing, but I have a blast every time I go to Metro Rock. The people there are really laid-back and friendly. It's not hard at all to find a buddy to help you out or cheer you on. I don't feel like there are many route choices for the beginners though and if you don't have a membership it can be a little expensive (about $19 for a day pass if you are also renting shoes). read more

Pros: Very large, lots of routes and boulder problems. Great setters. Staff members are friendly enough. Route-setting contest is fun, and you earn a free granola bar for participating. Free yoga classes with membership. Very low concentration of the meatheads that you see too many of in a regular gym. Auto belays are nice if you go when it's not crowded. Cons: Locker room is too small and freezing in the winter. Bouldering area never has enough mats. I've been to gyms where the whole floor is one giant mat, and it's way better than having to look for a free mat and drag it over to where you're bouldering. I know they're expensive, but come on. If you go right after school on a weekday, you may experience "the shouter." She's one of the coaches for the kids, and she SHOUTS all the time. At times (Mondays lately) the music is awful and blasting. Good luck if you're leading and want your belayer to hear you. read more

The best rock climbing gym I've ever been to (including some in the midwest), and definitely the best in the Boston area. It's the only one that's accessible by T, so after work I can hop on the orange line and either call for a ride from Wellington station or make the 10-15-minute walk, which I have to admit is not the prettiest walk, but still ok if the weather is nice. The big thing that sets Metrorock apart from the other gyms in the area is the quality of the routes. Metrorock has fantastic routesetters and great walls with a good surface and lots of overhangs and aretes and chimneys to keep it interesting. I didn't realize how unique this was until I tried some other gyms that weren't nearly as fun, and really the quality of the routes is crucial to having a great time. The biggest real downside to metrorock is that it's so popular and accessible that it's super crowded on weeknights. I try to go on Friday nights or weekends when it's a lot less crowded. I especially like Sunday mornings, when whoever is in charge of music shares my tastes ;). read more

Decided to try something different with my 8 year old daughter, it was our first time climbing. To me customer service is very important, when I walked in the young gentleman was very helpful but at the time that we were actually climbing two employees a female and male passed by us stopped to tell us we were doing something wrong (I appreciated that) but didn't bother to help or explain what we were doing wrong and how to do it right. This was very disappointing to me, I was confused and was scared to do anything else. We just cut our day short and decided to head to skyzone. read more

Horrible service. Called for walk-in hours and they said Friday 10-3. We drove down from Nashua, NH (45min) got to the gym 10:10 am. They said "we are not doing walk- ins today, we have a big school group " I only brought in one 12 year old to do the challenge course. The school group wasn't even on time. The manager said no! Will not be back to metrorock and I will tell the Nashua school district to stay away and go elsewhere. They could of made an exception and let my child go. Horrible service, not friendly and a long drive for a disappointment. read more

I have been to this gym 3 times, and the first two were great experiences for my climbing buddy and myself. The lady who helped us get set up was very knowledgeable, and kind, and helped my girlfriend get set up to climb for her first time. Then, the third time visiting, I happened to run into the owner, who told two of my friends they "didn't know what the f**k they were doing," and that they should "get the hell out because you don't know what to do." When confronting him about his choice of words and general unprofessionalism, he told me to "get the fuck out of my gym and never come back." He threw my refund in my face, and continued to make a scene in front of the rest of his customers. Overall, the level of professionalism at Metro Rock was astoundingly low, and I would not recommend this place to anyone on the simple basis of principals. Go to Boston Rock. read more

Pat has consistently over many years maintained a first class climbing experience by using a great crew of route setters and fully exploiting the significant height of the gym. From the beginners sections to the overhanging 5.12 lead routes there is plenty for everyone. Routes are changed on a frequent basis and are some of the most creative in the area. Added to this Pat attracts a great group of friendly and knowledgeable staff members who add to the very positive experience. I was eager to come here because it is one of the original climbing gyms of Boston. However, after repeatedly wasting 45+min waiting for their shuttle to pick me up and Wellington station, I've given up. I waste too much time trying to get here. The metro itself is not an inconvenience but the shuttle arrangement is terrible. You have to call them when you get to the station. They don't always know where their shuttles are. The front desk does NOT communicate with the drivers of the van so if multiple people call, it's a toss-up if the driver knows to be on the lookout for more. Terrible process. Miserable in the winter. UPDATE! Waiting an hour at Wellington, skipped 3 times. read more

Great diversity of fun terrain. On Sundays its not too crowded, and yoga for rock climbing on Thursdays is great. Later on weekdays it's crowded and there are waits for every rope. Easily accessible from the T since they offer pickups and rides to Wellington Station. The staff is decent and it's as expensive as any other rock climbing gym. read more

As a first time rock climber I couldn't have hoped for a better experience. The basic instructional class was a huge help and I would recommend it for people who havent done it before and don't know anyone who can show them the ropes:) As Catherine L. said it is kind of steep ($40 gear included) howEver if you are a chick and you plan right you can make out like a bandit. Every Monday Night is Half off for chicks!!! So for an hour and a half we learned all the basics and most importantly worked through the safety dos and donts with an expert. We had Kristin who was amAzing as was the rest of the staff. Driving into the warehouse area was a bit sketchy at first but the parking lot seemed super safe. Theres a shuttle from the T stop up the street which is awesome. Overall I do recommend it. read more

This could be a five star place if it wasn't always overcrowded with an undereducated, undersupervised crowd. Routes intertwine too frequently, would be fine if the crowd was more experienced. In general be careful. Other climbers around you may be unaware of good climbing ethics/best practices for safety. Forgive them, they just really want to get the most out of their Groupon punch card and don't know better. The route setting is well done in general other than the crowding issues. Metro Rock is definitely my climbing gym of choice. The staff is awesome and I've never had an unpleasant interaction with anyone--serious props to you guys! With regards to the gym itself, I boulder pretty exclusively and always find awesome problems to work on and if I can catch any of the setters (or other staff) they are always willing to offer their help. Which is definitely appreciated. This has the been the first climbing gym in which I've really invested time and I've been so spoiled with the wonderful staff and great problems that it's going to be hard for any other gym to match it--not that I would go anywhere else. read more

Had previously hated on this place pretty hard but then started going regularly. It's nothing compared to the shittiest gym in CA, but for Boston, not only is it the only option unless you want to drive to Dedham but it's pretty ok. Relying on their shuttle sort of blows but other wise the courses are nice and challenging, and their capital investments have improved the place. As some other reviews have mentioned, it is run by kids so customer service isn't like, the top priority, but it fits the laid-back, chill vibe of the place. Weekdays 6-8 pm are pretty gnarly in terms of crowds but we still rarely waited for routes. read more

Love rock climbing here! On the plus side, the routes are always changing. They finally got in 3 Auto Belays. Ladies bathrooms always has handsoap and toilet paper. Ladies night rates EVERY week!! Folks at the frontdesk are always pleasant. As for cons: only one small wall of inverted climbs and their Treadwall doesn't work! C'mon guys, get that Treadwall working! :) They have other cool services available in their gym as well: workout room, Yoga, 2 separate Challenge courses and Groupon rates on a regular basis. read more

Great rock climbing gym. Pretty cheap and they offer pick-up in correlation with the MBTA. This weekend the gym is hosting United States rock climbing nationals. I went there a couple of times at night and the crowd couldn't be better. And I once went there in the early afternoon and had dozens upon dozens of walls to myself and my partner. read more

I had written a three star review previously (the quality of climbing and bouldering routes deserved five stars) because the desk staff had been incredibly unprofessional and tortuous to interact with 1.5 years ago, but I have deleted that review. I was contacted by the owner of MetroRock shortly after my review was posted and he had written a thoughtful, professional apologetic response, which I really appreciated. After having transferred to a newer gym that opened up and climbing there for several months, I found myself dissatisfied with the quality of the climbing routes. I have returned to MetroRock and I am extremely glad I did because the routes, both climbing (lead and TR) and bouldering routes, are far superior and the best you'll find in Boston. Additionally, there has been massive turnover of desk staff, which has left only professional, enthusiastic, nice climbers working the front desk that are so fun to interact and speak with. The shuttle arrives when you are told it will arrive and the employees are no longer begrudgingly picking you up or dropping you off. (Thank you very much for correcting the issues!) The routes are reset regularly and provide challenges for climbers of all levels and styles. After having climbed at other gyms in the area, I can say that MetroRock is the gym for the committed climber. Quality routes and routine/timely resets are definitely the main foci of this gym--it isn't trying to be a community center and an innovation hub and a coffee shop and a cool hangout and a communal workspace and then a place to do some climbing. Whether you've been climbing for years or you just started, great training equipment and employees hosting weekly clinics are there to help you take your climbing or bouldering (or both) to the next level. They have countless perks and benefits for members and membership prices are more than reasonable. Yes, sometimes it gets crowded at night, but I think it's because everyone is realizing that the routes at Metro are the best and everyone is flocking back to climb at Metro. read more

This is an update. I have been coming here weekly for a few months now and the routes does get updated often enough for me to not get bored. I'm at the 5.10 range now and this gym has a good number of 5.10s. The routes are set up so you have to think outside the body and practice balancing and techniques, rather than just holding onto crimpy holds. read more

When I first came here last week, I had never done indoor rock climbing (let alone, outdoor rock climbing :). Upon walking in, there's a registration area where you enter your contact info. and sign a waiver--all computerized. You also collect your rental gear here. My group signed up for the Basics course (101), which included all the gear and a private instructor (the group must have at least six people for private instruction). Once we got our gear on, it was straight over to one of the easier walls to go over how to tie the correct knot, setting up for the climber, etc. Our instructor was super friendly and helpful, as all of us were new to it. There's rock walls of various difficultly levels, and I was really surprised at how advanced some of them were. There's also a few walls where you can try climbing without needing any gear on. If I lived closer, I'd probably come here once a week just to practice and get a workout--it was a lot of fun (and only a little scary). read more

I chose MetroRock because, as a car-less student, it is the closest gym to the city center and easily accessible by T or bus. It's hard to complain about the amount of climbing surface and training facilities, because I think they are wonderful. While some setters are clearly better than others and create climbs that cater to everyone (not just 6 foot+ men who dyne everything), I feel like the amount of space to climb and boulder means you will not run out of new stuff to try, and the boulder problems are rotated all the time, which is great. The staff are a mixed bag. Some seem really nice and others seem to hate life. Occasionally I have waited almost 10 minutes just to check in because only one staff member wants to run the desk while trying to sign people up for things and such. Because of my work schedule I have been going to the gym during the day. I was looking forward to this because I thought "ok, it will be nice and quiet, I can boulder at my leisure and it will be a nice atmosphere." WRONG. I would rather go in the evenings when it is packed, at least until summer is over and kids are back in school. The reason being: SUMMER CAMP. BEWARE!!!! The staff seems to have no control over the kids, who don't really climb, they just swarm the bouldering area using it as a playground with no disregard for anyone around them. All their parents just threw them there as daycare, and it's super annoying. Sure, they are paying for it, but so are all the members. I was on a problem the other day and after hearing "EXCUSE ME???" yelled at me from the ground several times I turned around and fell off to have these boys ask me if I was using the mat that was clearly below me. Seriously?And the closest staff member didn't even seem to think this was rude. They also hop on routes in front of you, pull mats out from under you, and run underneath you while you climb. Plus they run EVERYWHERE and no one stops them. I am so excited for summer to be over and these kids to go away!!!! Other than that part I like MetroRock (just wish it wasn't a daycare...) read more

i love to climb. i like metrorock. sometimes it's really crowded after work, but i still like it. there aren't a ton of 5.7-5.8 leads, which i think is unfortunate because they are good for practice, but it's nice to be able to practice sport leading. i like the fact that they have a cardio workout area in the mezzanine although i don't use it often enough!! read more

If I could recommend a single climbing gym in the metro Boston area, Metrorock would be my vote overall. The bouldering problems and top rope/lead routes are reset regularly and they have a variety of setters that make climbing as much of a mental challenge as it is a physical one (all in the name of fun). The community is a big reason I stay -- everyone is friendly and encouraging, whether you're climbing a V0 or a V9. There are lots of classes such as Granite Girls (a women's only 4-8 week climbing technique class) and learning to lead. Metrorock has so much to offer, it's worth a visit. read more
