    Pork Schnitzel with beet salad
    Emily K.

After a recent trip to Germany, we were looking for some German food and found Metzger. We made a reservation, showed up a little early and were seated right away. It's a small, cozy dining room, so I'm glad they take reservations. Service was quick and friendly. We started with a cider and the kölsch, both were delicious. I ordered the pork schnitzel and my bf got the flank steak with jäger sauce, mushrooms, and potatoes, and we got the käsespätzle to share. The schnitzel was very crispy and the beet salad and dill sauce were perfect accoutrements. The steak was very tender and the sauce was delicious. The käsespätzle was SO good! It was very cheesy and a good size to share as a side to our dinners. We'll definitely be back soon!

This restaurant was recommended on a list of things to do in Richmond, so a friend and I went to check it out. The front of the restaurant is well lit and beautiful. Unfortunately we were seated in some dank side room that definitely had a slight unappealing odor. The entree menu is limited to 3 options: chicken schnitzel, fish, and steak. I went with the fish, but my friend went with the steak. Boom. Well, I can say without a doubt that fish was the best fish I've ever had. Not even kidding. And the steak was really good too, though I'm glad I went with the fish. It was amazing. Totally made up for the dank room, lol. And the waitress was super nice.

Recently, I've really gotten into charcuterie boards. I love the sense of creativity and freedom they inspire--I enjoy crafting the perfect bite for myself and for others. Metzger Bar and Butchery serves up one of the best charcuterie boards I've had in a while. Their board included cornichons, sliced ham and prosciutto, pickled onions, and my favorite element: the soft-boiled eggs. In addition to the charcuterie board, we ordered the soft scrambled eggs with toast as well as the grits and eggs. Both dishes were delicious, and we definitely got plenty of protein that day. The only downside was that we were seated toward the back of the restaurant, which I understand is sometimes necessary for table rotation. Our table was next to the door to the Pink Room, and I felt a bit left out seeing all the staff and guests enjoying themselves in that hidden space.

Finally made it to Metzger for dinner. My husband and I wanted to do a date night somewhere so I reviewed my list of restaurants I wanted to try and Metzger and Brennen Pass were both on the list. I was lucky to snag a Friday night reservation for 2 and we were seated in a lovely room to the back right. Chris was our server and greeted us promptly and took drink orders. My husband got their version of a gin and tonic and I got a gin martini. Both were expertly crafted. For appetizers we got the smoked oysters and bread service. The oysters were awesome and came served in a cute tin can. I wonder if they're made in house but it didn't really matter because they were so good. The bread was good and was served with a cottage cheese and butter mixture with a few radishes on top. I really enjoyed it and was surprised by the cottage cheese and butter combo. For entrees my husband got the hanger steak and I got the schnitzel. The hanger steak was amazing. The schnitzel was fine but it needed potatoes or something to balance the fried and rich aspect of the brown butter hollandaise. It did have some pickled veg on top so that helped. Overall we had a nice dinner and a great night out. Service was excellent and it seemed like Chris our server was covering most of the restaurant but the rest of the staff helped him. We will definitely make another trip to Metzger and I definitely want to try Brennen Pass. The irony is that on Saturday morning I was watching Food Network Tournament of Champions and Brittany, the chef and owner was on. She mentioned Brenner Pass and 'sexy Alpine' food and putting Virginia on the food map. That was kind of cool. She did win her first round. Hope to see her on future episodes. Love seeing badass chefs from Virgina and really love it when it's a badass female chef.

Absolutely delicious brunch. The gravy with the schnitzel was phenomenal. Can't wait to visit for brunch again!

Went for brunch (food listed below on pictures) food was absolutely amazing. Enjoyed brunch with a Bitsburger Pils and shared 2 entrees with my partner! We were very tempted by the "special" which was a deconstructed bagel and lox with a German twist on it. Highly recommend! Friendly serive and beautiful ambiance!

My husband and I had a beautiful date night last night at Metzger and we will definitely be back! Service from start to finish was excellent. We shared the Parker house rolls for an appetizer, and they were absolutely divine. For entrées, I had the pork chop And he had the venison. Although I'm typically not a fan of gamey meats, the venison was absolutely incredible. My pork chop was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. One of the best meals we've had this year! For dessert, we shared the Yuzu Panna cotta, that was topped with a blood orange hibiscus granita. It was the perfect ending to our meal. Don't walk, RUN to Metzger ASAP!!

I've never really tried German food before, so I was eager to try Metzger Bar and Butchery when I heard about it. The chicken schnitzel was delicious, but definitely filling since the chicken is fried. The Semolina Pappardelle (a mushroom pasta) had a unique flavor combining mushrooms, saffron, and hint of citrus but also was creamy. I actually really enjoyed the pasta since I have not tasted anything like it before! The server was very attentive. The restaurant was not super busy (since it was a Tuesday night), but the ambiance was still very cozy and intimate. I am happy I was able to try this restaurant and recommend if you want to try a modern take on German food!

Not impressed at all. Food was ok but not for those prices. The waitstaff could've been more attentive. Just felt very pretentious.

Bad service and the food was very overpriced for what it was. Interior was tired and felt dirty inside.

Dear Management Team, Today, May 5, 2026 at 6:15 pm…read more I am writing to formally express my disappointment with a recent experience at your downtown Richmond location, Capital Ale House. On the evening of our visit, I hosted a party of 11 guests. Everyone in our party was present and seated by 6:10 PM. Unfortunately, the service we received from our waitress, Jen, was unacceptable from the start. Her tone and approach toward our table came across as brash and unwelcoming. As we attempted to simplify our order by keeping it on one check, her responses were dismissive rather than helpful. At one point, I was told in a cold and abrupt manner that I could not have my carrot cake before my meal because "that's not the way it comes." This interaction set the tone for the remainder of the evening. I requested to speak with a manager on four separate occasions, and each time my request was declined or ignored. It was only after Jen visibly became frustrated and stumped away that a manager was finally brought to the table. When Ruby, who identified herself as the manager, arrived, her initial response felt defensive rather than solution-oriented. While she did eventually apologize and stated she would take care of us by ensuring we received happy hour pricing, the overall experience had already been negatively impacted. What makes this especially disappointing is that I am a regular customer who dines at this location for lunch at least three times a month. I chose to bring my family here expecting a positive experience, and instead, it was quite the opposite. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and used to improve both customer service and management responsiveness moving forward. I would appreciate follow-up regarding this matter.

There is free street parking around and it's not too hard to find. It's also close to the 5 bus. ***EXPERIENCE*** I don't come here often, but when I do I adore it. They have the absolute best sausages in town. If you're going to get anything, order the panini with kielbasa and your pick of melted cheese. It's heaven. If you're a beer person, you're in for a treat. They have so many types to pick from. There is outdoor and indoor seating. When the weather is nice, they open the windows and let a great breeze in. The people who work here are really cool and kind. If you can't do a cheese dish, order the Full Cask, that way you can try another incredible sausage and an assortment of goodies. ***PRICE*** They have great prices here. It's affordable and worth it for their beer and sausages. ***BATHROOM*** They have single mixed gendered bathrooms here. ***CONCLUSION*** If you're looking for good beer, good food, and a good time The Cask Cafe is a great place for you. It's super casual and a wonderful, cozy spot. I highly recommend checking it out.

It took over 20 minutes for our waitress to come over and greet us, and that wasn't even to take our drink orders. It was so long that we debated leaving, however we remember how good it was, so decided to stick the wait out. I should've taken the nearly empty restaurant as a sign. That's was my mistake. Might've been one of the longest meals of my life. The staff- who claim to be short staffed (which could very well be, I'm not downplaying that), however they frequently stood in front of the TV watching whatever sports game was on it... interesting. When we tried to get our waitresses attention (multiple times this occurred), we got a nasty side eye and she walked away and ignored us (lovely ). When we did finally get our meals, items of it were cold or incorrect (shoutout my mashed potatoes which were physically hard). With that being said, the wings were good, would recommend those if you're going here. Don't order the tacos on the other hand... elote corn was obviously frozen- gross. Other items of the meal you could tell were previously frozen too. I will say they offered us a complimentary dessert which was nice, I was just really disappointed with this experience overall. In my opinion this restaurant needs to be renovated and menu needs to be cleaned up (and the freshness of the food should be revalued), this place is going downhill and experience reflects that.
