When I was in town a year ago, this place was a huge hit, but as of a couple days ago when I went... not so much. It took over 20 minutes for our waitress to come over and greet us, and that wasn't even to take our drink orders. It was so long that we debated leaving, however we remember how good it was, so decided to stick the wait out. I should've taken the nearly empty restaurant as a sign. That's was my mistake. Might've been one of the longest meals of my life. The staff- who claim to be short staffed (which could very well be, I'm not downplaying that), however they frequently stood in front of the TV watching whatever sports game was on it... interesting. When we tried to get our waitresses attention (multiple times this occurred), we got a nasty side eye and she walked away and ignored us (lovely ). When we did finally get our meals, items of it were cold or incorrect (shoutout my mashed potatoes which were physically hard). With that being said, the wings were good, would recommend those if you're going here. Don't order the tacos on the other hand... elote corn was obviously frozen- gross. Other items of the meal you could tell were previously frozen too. I will say they offered us a complimentary dessert which was nice, I was just really disappointed with this experience overall. In my opinion this restaurant needs to be renovated and menu needs to be cleaned up (and the freshness of the food should be revalued), this place is going downhill and experience reflects that. read more

This is one of the best, most affordable, quick lunches in Innsbrook! The service is lovely and the atmosphere is nicer than one of the neighboring fast food places. I visited Capital Ale House on a Wednesday night around 6:30 PM and the place was pretty busy, with most of the bar seats and many tables occupied. It's a large restaurant with lots of seating. The place felt a bit rundown. They have a ton of draft beers (70ish) which is overwhelming. Lots of it is local to Virginia. It could use some better design, like headers by beer style and different spacing, to make it easier to read. Service was bad. I had to tell our waiter my beer order multiple times, including after he left and then came back to double-check it. My companion ordered the "Volcano Sauce" beer and he thought they were talking about a sauce on their dish; they almost didn't get the beer at all, except I realized that he was confused and clarified it for him. Try numbering the beers so they are easier to order and find in your point of sale. It took over an hour to get basic entrees due to "problems with the kitchen" according to our waiter. To their credit, the fish tacos ($15) looked like the ones in the menu photo. Unfortunately, they mostly tasted like sauce, so they could have been anything. The corn elote tasted like frozen, microwaved corn -- gross. I would not visit again. read more

I attended a lunch meeting in one of the private rooms. Very nice accommodations, excellent service. They have a new soup which the server assist me was good, so I decided to have the Crab Bisque. It was served with crab on top and a piece of crusty bread. It was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. My hubby had the salmon as did several others. The Asian Salad and burgers looked good. The soft shell crab looked tasty and everyone enjoyed their meals. Our servers were friendly and attentive. What a nice lunch. read more

I would usually give this Innsbrook location a 5 star review. We were actually the only people seated at a table inside the entire place when we first arrived. Others were at the bar and outside. Our server gave us minimal attention. What convinced me to do this review was her attempt to refill our tea. The server mixed up the glasses. I ordered the small ale house salad and added steak to it. I have done this many times and have enjoyed it with steak as well as salmon. Stopped in for late lunch on a Saturday and was seated immediately. This place is a beer house on steroids (looked like 50 taps or more, with -- wild guess here -- another 50 in cans and bottles. But we were there to eat, I needed to be able to function the rest of the day! The place was maybe 20% filled. I saw 6 TVs playing various football games and video clip shows. We started with the beer cheese pretzel. It was good, and while probably frozen it was resurrected nicely, no issue at all. Nice salting on top. The whole grain mustard and beer cheese that came along side were really good accompaniments. For mains I got the bacon black and bleu burger. Cooked to order and perfectly done. Between the seasoning, the cheese, and the bacon, this was pretty salty so if you order it get your refill started before you tuck in on the food. Fries were hot and plentiful. My partner got a french dip. She enjoyed it a lot, I didn't find it to be more than average. Service could have been more attentive, especially with the thin demand. Drinks went unrefilled and check up on the table waited til the meal was over. The server was clearly busy prepping for the evening and I understand multitasking, no big issue. Haven't eaten here yet, only beer tastings and growler refills, but so far, so good. One oddity that is perhaps a good thing is that this location has two separate bars. A traditional one and a sort of rectangular one near the entrance. This capital alehouse has the same great, private booth seating as the other one I've visited and the beer service was great. The bartender Zach gave us some recommendations and was very prompt to help us. Will definitely return soon. read more

Stopped by for a team lunch last week. Capital Ale House is a German-style bar restaurant with a variety of different drinks and foods. It's a small chain that is mainly in Richmond and its surrounding suburbs, but there are a few locations in other parts of VA. Make sure to check-in so you can get a BAVARIAN PRETZEL for free if you order 2 entrees. I definitely recommend paying 2.95 extra for the beer cheese sauce, which was delicious. The pretzel was salted generously and it was super soft and chewy. I could not get enough of the beer cheese sauce. ROASTED SALMON & SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS - 25 The shiitake rice pilaf, spinach and the shiitake garnished on top were surprisingly delicious. The seasoning and sauce to create all of it were good and not too heavy. However, the salmon was a letdown. It was pretty fishy -- did not taste fresh (probably previously frozen and for a long time). Overall, it didn't match up with how good the shiitake and spinach part of this dish. Burgers are good, wings are top 5 in area... Better than hooters not as good as Hangry Joe's. Not a huge fan of their ketchup and spicy ketchup. But service was great. I prefer Hines and Franks red hot.. Mayo comes in packets which is not my preference.. Definitely hit it again. Space is huge with can seat may. Parking on the other hand is share with 10 other business's and lacking especially during lunch when the sandwich shop next store completely overwhelms the entire parking lot. Awesome but DO NOT GO until the sandwich shop closes. That sandwich shop needs to be move to the other side of the complex it destroys parking for all Ale House and all the other shops. read more

We come here almost every Monday for the burger night special. Tonight I got the double bacon beer cheese smash burger and it was absolutely phenomenal best burger I've had here I always get the same burger because it's good but tonight it was cooked perfect with crispy edges and surprisingly well seasoned normally I salt the heck out of it but when I opened the wrapper I was delighted to see a perfect saucey burger and I figured I'd try it first and I'm really glad I did because it was already perfect I asked who cooked it apparently it was Boricio and I will be asking if he's on the grill from now on it was absolute perfection and for only $6.25 its by far the best burger and value in RVA. Thank you Boricio! Our server tonight was Megan and she was on top of everything our drinks stayed full and she was very kind and did an amazing job. Looking forward to next week. read more

Had a nice visit, first time coming into the restaurant. This is a sizable space complete with many tables and a large bar. Standard fare but some German/Polish specialties added! We're seated immediately and had a very helpful server. His remote order entry challenged him, albeit briefly. We ordered wings and the pretzel appetizers. The hot wings have a nice bight. Overall they were cooked fairly well but one drum was straight pink deep in the middle. The pretzel is fantastic, with the cheese and Dijon. Then had an ale house salad. Tried Golumpki which is fantastic. It's a German/Polish/Eastern European dish of rice and ground beef wrapped in cabbage with tomato sauce. The Warsaw burger special is 7oz patty with sauerkraut and kielbasa on a pretzel bun. Kid loved it but bottom bun disintegrated quickly! The only other odd think is everything came at one time. Appetizers came with dinner or dinner came with appetizers but strange there was no separate deliveries. read more

While my beer was great, tried a few different ones, the food was fresh and delicious and our server, S was so attentive and engaging, we had a great time. My only complaint was a server was wearing a gay pride arm band which we found very inappropriate for a family restaurant. The children were asking why she had a rainbow on her arm. We went on Christmas Eve as a family, called ahead though it didn't seem there was a need. There was almost no one eating there that night. Our server was friendly, attentive, and personable. I felt bad his team lost the game, though I couldn't tell you who played to save my life lol Unfortunately that's all the good I can say about the visit. Three of the five of us ordered streaks of various cuts and temperatures. All three were messed up. My dad didn't say anything since his was close enough though. When we told our server he was great about it and got the corrections to the kitchen, but apparently we'd ordered the last of all the steaks in the entire restaurant. The steakhouse ran out of steak. There was so much confusion that he came to let us know three different times because (I'm assuming) it just didn't compute even to the server that they weren't just out of one cut of meat, but all cuts of steak. The last time he brought the manager which was slightly annoying since he felt the need to yell his apology right over mine and my dad's ears Then dad got food poisoning overnight and into the morning. Christmas morning. I don't blame the server, he was great, but I don't think we'll ever go back to this restaurant, esp as a family. However when it came to the main course, the meals took longer than expected to arrive. Holy staffing issues Batman. I have come to this place before and had good experiences. Tonight was a disaster. One bartender covering an entire restaurant and two bars. No bar back, zero manager insight. Yo manager, why aren't you triaging and helping this poor bartender out? Pouring drinks, bar backing? Walked out after 15 minutes of not getting a water. Got the fish and chips and it was slightly above average. The fish was moist, but didn't really have much flavor. Cole slaw was good, it had jalapeño which complimented the slaw. I was missing the tarter sauce and had to ask for it after it came out. Fries were fresh. It costed $24 which was overpriced for the quality. I came during lunch with a group and the waiter was definitely on the newer side. Refills took some time. There was a lot of beer options but I didn't get one. We had an after work gathering here. The bar area looked very busy with a lot of customers. We had a table in the back which was very nice. Lots of windows and a view overlooking the courtyard. The server was really good and stopped by frequently to check on us. The food we had was delicious. The pretzel with beer cheese, spinach artichoke dip and sweet potato fries were tasty. Easy parking and quick service. They have a really large beer menu worth trying. The outside seating in nice weather is delightful. After coming back from Kings Dominion's Winterfest we were looking for some late night eats. We were glad to have found this place open. Usually when it is late night, I do not expect a great experience but, this place proved me wrong. Our server was polite and patient. I'm surprised the decor seem kind of sparse. We started with a few drinks. You can sample some of the beers if you need help deciding as the beer menu is quite extensive. Just to note they do have a late night special for food from Sun-Thurs, but did not apply to this review as I went on a Saturday night. For food we got the Giant Bavarian pretzel, 20 wings, the Mushroom French dip burger, Belgium fries and the wurst platter. The wings were plump and delicious. We got the house dry run and the Thai chili sauce flavors. The latter was surprising and definitely a winner. Every thing else was decent. I wasn't a fan of the German mash potatoes that came with the wurst platter. It tasted like dry instant mash potatoes. A note I am glad this place gives out huge portions of sauce with their dishes. I went to Capital Ale House last night for dinner with a party of five. It was a Monday night and not very busy; we were seated right away. The restaurant has a lot of dark wood and feels cozy. It is a fairly sizable restaurant with booth-style seating and a bar in the main room, and another dining room in the back with tables. They also have outdoor seating when the weather is nice. It is located conveniently off Broad Street and is easy to find; the lot has plenty of parking. Our server was very kind and attentive, and the service was quick. The food came out hot and was very tasty; portion sizes were very generous. We got an appetizer of fried pickles for the table to share, which were long, thin slices that were well seasoned and fried crispy. They came with a jalapeño ranch dip that was flavorful but not too spicy. I ordered the chicken, andouille, and shrimp pasta, which had a zesty Cajun seasoning. Overall a great dinner. The only minor complaint was that I was given a cardboard sandwich box to take home my leftovers, which didn't work great with the pasta & sauce, but I made it work. The service was very good. Food, for the most part, was very good with a couple of misses. The good: Bavarian pretzel, periogies, and HOT Buffalo wings (when they say HOT, they mean it. I was literally in tears, and I love spicy), broccolini and pasta, apple pie a la mode, and brownie sundae. The misses: key lime pie (hubby didn't even finish it), mussels (had so much potential, but something with the broth was overbearing and bitter. The mussels themselves were good, though). Also, the apple pie cider was not good at all. Has an herbal/flower taste to it (which it did say herbal in the description, but I wasn't sure what it meant). We were a group of 7 on a Thursday night, the place wasn't very full. Marco was our server and he was FABULOUS! We started with the Bavarian pretzels as an appetizer. Delicious, hot and soft! For dinner we had the jaegerschnitzel (very good, crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside); Cuban tacos, fish tacos, beet salad (very few beets, lots of spinach), Cobb salad, and the fish and chips (generous portion and good). Everyone had beer and/or wine. Lots of beer selections but only one Chardonnay choice (but it was good). We all enjoyed our experience! I ordered pasta but part of my pasta was cold, as if it's been sitting in a cooler then heated last minute. Flavor/seasoning was definitely great. Our server seem just a bit confused but super nice. Noticed nobody used server trays. Not sure if they ran out or just don't care to use but it took several time to get everyone's drinks to table & same ordered appetizers came out all separately. It would have been faster & nice to use a server tray to eliminate several unnecessary trips to deliver the drinks & food. Patio was beautiful & relaxing.
