I go to Mexican Gardens on a regular basis for lunch every week. They provide a hot and mild salsa right when you sit down - and unlimited chips. They also have the BEST soups. They are served on the house during lunch time during the week - and they are all fabulous. The wait staff is wonderful. read more

Mexican Gardens is ok. It is not what I would call authentic Mexican food by any standards, but it's good for what it is. There are more authentic places around, like Los Galanes in Detroit or even Tijuana's in Lincoln Park. The service is extremely fast, which is good if you are wanting a quick meal, but definitely goes to show you that things are just thrown together quickly on an assembly line in the back. I would rather it take 10-15 minutes than 5 minutes... but that's me. When you order anything "seafood" on the menu, you get Krab meat, not crab meat. They don't tell you this on the menu, instead they indicate that it is real crab. Chunky burritos are more like beef stew wrapped in a tortilla. I'm not saying they don't taste good, but it's just not authentic. I try not to go on busy nights, which of course are Fridays and Saturdays. I don't understand why places like this get the crowds when I think there are more deserving places. Instead, if we really want to dine here (more my husband), we order takeout. That is a whole 'nother story. Takeout usually comes in a Styrofoam container, that it's obvious they have pre-filled with beans and rice earlier in the day because they are hardened and crusty in the tray. Then they plop the main food item in there, throw on some cheese and send it out, rarely with the cheese even melted. If I had to write a review based on carry-out, it would get 1 star. The food is often cold, and like I said, beans are hard and crusty. Half the time they forget tortillas or any other accompaniment. Speedy Gonzalez who answers the phones (or used too) needs to do his job a little better... slow down while taking orders and making them that way he gets it right. I also recommend going if you want a nice quick lunch. Lunch comes with a free bowl of soup, which is usually pretty good. The prices are cheaper as well, so it's a good deal. This place is good to go too if you want a quick "good" meal, but not if you want real authentic Mexican food. If you want that, try out some of the other establishments in Lincoln Park, or Mexicantown. read more

I heard great things about this place so, while we were in the area, my family decided to try it out. The entire experience was a GIANT let down... Firstly, my sister has an infant. While she was trying to set up the high chair for her baby, our server (her name was Nikki) came over and rudely told her that she wasn't allowed to set up there because it was a fire hazard. I completely understand that it's a fire hazard, but she could have been more nice about it. After that, she was an okay server at best. The food was nothing special, just Mexican food. I've had the same meal I had at Mexican Garden at numerous other Mexican locations. Finally, the bill came. And she presented it all on one check. When we told her that we were not all on one bill, she got mad and balked saying that she'd have to void our whole bill and re-ring the food in because we didn't tell her. But she never asked, and she should have. She behaved as though we were such an inconvenience to her. When I went to a manager to complain about our service, he was indifferent at best. This was a horrible experience. We will likely never return. read more

This is my favorite restaurant. All of the staff are friendly and efficient but I have my favorites. Sondra, Lori and Pat start my special hot sauce when they see me come in the door. I usually get the combo plate because that's my favorite but I also love the chicken and steak fajita salads. I try to make it there once a week otherwise I have withdrawals. I USED to love this restaurant!!! I have been coming here since I was a kid and have been bringing my kids here, now since they were babies. This was a weekly lunch/dinner place for us. Food is good as well as the prices. But what also kept us coming back was the family feel the restaurant gave off. In November, my family and I were dining in and my sons and I walked passed the kitchen were he was hit in the head/neck with a SIZZLING fajita plate, a bowl hit him in the knee and I caught the rest of the food in my chest. It was an accident on the waitresses behalf and I am not bitter about that. HOWEVER, after I talked to Bill the "manager" he told me he would talk to Frank the "GM" and get back with me ASAP. After a day of not hearing anything I called. I was just really upset that our favorite restaurant could have cared less about my 7 year old son. After speaking with both "managers" neither of them so much as offered to comp our meal. After I suggested maybe they could do that (comp our meal) Frank said a gift card was in the mail....One Month Later..... still waiting.... I still haven't returned and my kids ask to go all the time but the lack of compassion is just disappointing. My son could have been SEVERELY burned!!!!
