I was incredibly disappointed with Mexican Gardens tonight. Usually one turns to the manager to resolve an issue; however, in this case, the issue was with the manager, Brittany, who would not even make the smallest effort to help. We tried to order a dish (take out) that we have ordered dozens of times before. Brittany refused to take the order, saying they "don't do that". We told her that we had been customers for many years and we have often ordered that dish; Brittany told us that we were wrong. When we asked what changed, as we have ordered this dish many times, she said "nothing has changed". Brittany was rude and condescending. She over-talked us and was dismissive. She clearly had no interest in us as customers. As for the order that she refused to accommodate, it was simply to add chicken to the vegetable fajita, with the understanding, of course, that we would pay for the chicken. Sounds pretty simple to accommodate, yes? Not only that, but that was just for one person. We planned on ordering for 6 additional people, so it would have been a large order. Apparently Brittany does not care enough about the customer to allow the simple add of chicken. I have always ordered this dish that way (rather than getting the regular chicken fajitas) because my dietary requirements are to have the additional veggies that are included in the vegetable fajitas, but also the protein in the chicken. We have been going to Mexican Gardens for close to 40 years. Most of the servers know us by sight. But if this manager is an example of their new standards, my family and I won't be going back. Brittany, I hope that piece of chicken that was oh-so-important to you is worth the loss of our business. In addition to the revenue we bring, your servers are going to miss our highly generous tips. This place is as reliable as grey skies in the winter. I'll admit it's a bit of a family staple. My wife always comments that she recognizes some of the wait staff from when she was just a little kid. The chips and salsa are free, and the mild is just ok, but the hot is much better. For appetizers I'd recommend the cheesy bean dip or their white queso. The guacamole is also on point. For entree's it's hard for me to pass up their fajitas. My fave is the chicken and shrimp combo. The fajitas have such great flavor and the portions are huge, you will most likely have enough for a second round the next day. Mexican Gardens is not fancy or cutting edge, but it's reliable and consistently good. If you need a fajita fix this is a great place to try downriver. A visit with my parents more often than not will have us ending up here. I love seafood options at Mexican places, so I lean toward the seafood enchiladas, but with flour tortillas instead of corn - not sure what's in their white seafood sauce but I'd take a gallon to go! Ken likes the Juanita Burrito (their version of a wet burrito). The botana is excellent - they charge more for chips on the side, but it makes it easier to eat. Oooh, try the pork burritos - chunks of tender pork in a slightly spicy tomato sauce. Try them! My mom a la cartes every time so she can try a bunch of stuff, and that's how we stumbled across the pork burrito. Great drinks. Tons of margarita flavors. I'm giving this authentic CLEAN restaurant 5 stars! The food was delicious and the restaurant was one the cleanest restaurants I've ever been in! The general manager, Frank knows how to treat his customers well. We told him it was our first time here and he checked on us several times, gave us menu suggestions and even treated us to a free dessert. The service was really good and fast as well. I came here today for dinner with some friends, we were seeing a movie afterwards at the nearby Cinemark. Food was pretty good, a little pricey but Mexican food tends to be pricey for dinner. My boyfriend called this "gringo" Mexican food but I thought it was tasty. He and I split the steak fajitas and also the steak tacos. The tacos were trying to be authentic (they had cilantro in them) and were tasty, and came with Spanish rice and beans. The fajitas could have used more veggies in them, but the steak was marinated very well, and it did come with a few grilled onions and peppers. I thought the rice was bland, I don't like beans so I didn't try those. Two of the people at our table got drinks - a Bloody Mary and a blue margarita - and those looked good too. I will say this is not authentic Mexican food HOWEVER, the food here is really good, the server constantly kept bringing me chips & salsa because I kept finishing them lol, the salsa they had here had quite a spicy kick, I loved it so much I went thru 3 bowls and still packaged some to take home. I had Tacos El Carbon and the tacos were a really good size and very packed and came with beans & rice, however they didn't have hot sauce but the server gave me extra salsa to put on the tacos which was awesome. My wife and I went there for dinner. We have been there plenty of times, but, the waiter we had was terrible. He took our order. He brought my wife's meal with out appetizer, at the same time. He completely forgot my dinner that I ordered. When we asked where my order was he asked what did I order? I will check on that. He comes back and said it would just be a few minutes. The waiter completely forgot to put my order in and never said he was sorry. When my food did come to the table my wife was already done with hers. I just asked for a to go box. Then, when we went and paid the bill, the young lady that's operates the cash register, asked how our dinner was? My wife told her our experience was not good at all. To reply back to owners comment...I did order a meal, my brother ordered a meal, my sister did not and she always eats my soup, never a problem before bc I don't care for the soup and she loves it...how is it the customers fault that you put 3 soups on our table before we even ordered...I was simply trying to tell your staff that you should take the orders first before giving soup because not everyone orders a meal and not everyone wants a meal and there won't be miscommunication or charges involved. They have all you need food drinks and enough twists and turns for ambiance or to ditch a bad date I suppose. Lots of attention to decor. We love the marble bar top and the margaritas. First and foremost, Mexican Gardens is not a portal into Puerto Vallarta, although I would certainly appreciate that; it is also not Mexican Town, just north on Interstate-75. However, Mexican Gardens does serve good mexican-style cuisine in terms of quality, and the majority of the dishes are, in fact, tastefully satisfying. It is a large restaurant, able to comfortably seat many guests, and the service tends to be quick, with the exception of during the approximate dinner hours when folks line up practically out the door. This is a testament in itself to the enjoyable experience available here. Make note, there is a formidable bar (just inside the door, in the waiting area) to be taken advantage of, for perfect pairing with the food. Considering mexican restaurants in the downriver area, Mexican Gardens offers a wider menu selection than most establishments, which also includes a couple of the places in Mexican Town. It is often difficult for vegetarians to find decent mexican restaurants to dine at, but this is one location that can be of service. Frankly, the food is fresh and tasty, the menu has many options, the bar is well-stocked, and there is hardly reasonable competition in the immediate area. Check it out for yourself to decide if this place is for you, but call-ahead if you're going at dinner time! read more

Super easy to fill up on the chips and salsa before your food comes out lol...could be a good or bad thing I guess. I don't recall every having a bad server experience, so that's good! The food is just "meh." If I'm being honest, it tastes like it comes in a frozen tray, gets microwaved, then displayed on a plate. Nothing about it tastes "authentic" to me at all. My parents always went here to dine when they were younger. My brother and I absolutely love this restaurant!! I'm happy that they reopened. I had their corn shell taco dinner today as a carry out with extra rice and hot sauce. This is basically your most average Mexican American food in Downriver. Not amazing, not terrible. The servers are almost always nice and the food comes out fast. But the food itself will absolutely not blow you away. That being said, I could and have gorged myself on the chips and salsa. Prices are ok and it can get really busy. There are more authentic joints around the area, but this is one of my family's pre movie standbys so I have no real malice toward it... except for their very greasy fish tacos. This place is really great. The food is delicious and you get a lot of it. I ordered the Chicken Milanesa and my husband had the Chicken Fajitas. Both were very filling and yummy. The fried ice cream is also amazing! Our server was very polite and helpful and made sure we were happy with everything. This restaurant was very puzzling for my husband and I. This is a larger restaurant in which it was decently busy for a Friday evening. The decor is very outdated it even comes with plastic tablecloths. We tried this restaurant based on a few recommendations from friends but we're very surprised because everything lacked flavor. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer and it was the weirdest thing because it did not even taste like avocados it was like eating air. Their tortilla chips are very thick, they offer flour or corn. This place was pretty decent, in my opinion. It was clean, the people were nice and the service was ok. We started with chips and salsa (of course), which was a little bit of a let down. The chips were not warm like you get at some Mexican restaurants (not a deal breaker, but important enough to mention), It also seemed like the chips were stale...and the salsa which wasn't terrible, reminded me of tomato paste that has been doctored up with a few spices or pizza sauce out of a can. It did not seem very authentic, and had an undetectable amount of cilantro in it if any at all. I had the burrito with "Mexican beef", which was pretty good, but unfortunately they used the same pasty "cilantro-less" salsa on the burrito. The burrito was tasty and very filling, and had plenty of burrito goodness inside. We topped it off with a nice fried ice cream, which was really tasty...it reminded me of the old Chi Chi's days when they would give you one for your b-day. Many times we have visited this place for carryout or dinning at the restaurant and things have not been a relaxing experience. I love to eat out because it is my release from everyday pressures of life and this place is just another problem. The food is a little expensive as stated by others that have reviewed. Listen, by all means charge the price that you want but, make sure the service, food, and the establishment are there to match. The people that do the take out order are very careless and make you seem like you're a problem as oppose to a sale. There are times that I have called to order a meal and ask how much an item was and they stated to me around five or six dollars. Hello, the menu is right in front of you pick it up and take a look it's your job. The problems that I have encountered are wrong items, the portion control is all over the place, forgetting to put items in the bag that were supposed to be there. The fajita meat that they served has been pre-cooked and then served to order. The reason I think this is because have you ever marinated flank steak or skirt steak and then chargrilled it? When you cut the steaks into slices they should be perfect strips and the temperature to ones liking. Well, forget about it at this place it is all well done and curled up because it was once cooked before. I use to eat here a lot and forgave there shortcummings and just ate the food that I enjoyed. I will not continue to take part in lackluster service and food. If they handle the problems that I stated to them and resolved them I would have continue to eat at the restaurant.
