Okay food, bad service. Our waitress talked to her friends for ten minutes after we told her we needed a refill on our drink.

Great service despite a full dining room and folks in the lobby waiting for a table. One example is yfat when you are on the waitlist, say for 5 people, and your name is called...when you arrive ay your table, you'll already have waiting for you 5 glasses of icewater plus chips and salsa for five. Menuwise...standard fare offered. Fajitas are good here, but they don't come out sizzling like some places. Spiced right they are a good pick. I tend to prefer their enchiladas platter. Queso dip is a slight departure from other Mexican places. Instead of the white dip, Mexican Gardens mixes it with either their mild or medium salsa, so it comes out orangy. read more

Mexican Gardens is one of the BEST Mexican places in all of metro Detroit. I have driven over half an hour to get dinner here. The complimentary chips and salsa is unlimited, which is a great (although dancgerous) way to start the meal. Both the regular and spicy salsa are great. Everything I've tried here has been fantastic (although I prefer a red sauce on enchiladas and theirs is brown), and the margaritas are great too. The wait is pretty crazy on cinco de mayo, but they have live entertainment, face painting, pinatas, and even a limbo contest to entertain you while you wait! Everyone who works here is super friendly and helpful. I really have no complaints whatsoever. read more

The last time that I went there was quite awhile ago though, so I don't know if things changed too much. They had good portions and I didn't think that it was that expensive. We haven't been here in a few years. But now we're closer! My wife, kids and I stopped in Saturday night. After about a 15 minute wait, we were seated. My wife and I split an order of chicken milanesa. OH MY GOD! IT WAS SO GOOD! That is literally all I ever get when we come here. As usual, it was HUGE, and perfect. Our daughter had the 3 taco dinner. She raved about them. Our son had the seafood nachos. They do not skimp on the seafood. He finished about half of his, then asked for a take away box. I hate to give a restaurant a bad rating, but this just wasn't my cup of tea or salsa rather ;). Let me start by saying I am picky when it comes to Mexican. I personally think, if you want good Mexican you have to go to Mexican Fiesta in Dearborn or head to Mexican Town. Mexican Gardens is always busy so they must be doing something right. The service was fine and the place was clean I just thought the food was bland, mediocre at best. Lived in the area most of my life and never stopped by. My wife and I had an unusual 'kid free' night. Popped in on a Friday before 7. Crowded but was seated right away. Food was outstaiding and serivce was great. Drinks were made with a 'heavy hand' (no complaints here). Place appears to fill up fast so the earlier you get there the better. Bar/waiting area were shoulder to shoulder when we left. Always a positive sign when eating at a new place. read more

I left one star because no stars wasn't an option. Anyways, the food here is definitely not as good as other Mexican restaurants but I got out voted on dinner last night so I had to suck it up and deal with the shitty food. What I didn't expect was the shitty manager. I ordered myself 2 chicken quesadillas (super simple right? Wrong!) apparently. Paid $50.00 and left tip for my carry out, got all the way home to realize he gave me fajitas instead of quesadillas. I figured it was an honest mistake since the carry out guy kept cutting me off over the phone and he must have misheard me. But when I called back up there, the guy said "NO ITS QUESADILLA'S!" And argued with me about it and then told me I had to bring it back up as proof and show him. So I did. Drove the 15 minute.... no, 20 minute drive (it's downriver, construction is everywhere, let's be honest) back down to Mexican gardens and the manager looks at the food and then continues to tell me that chunks of chicken with strips of onion and strips of green pepper and no cheese is in fact a chicken quesadilla. So I just asked him to re-make the food just chicken and cheese FOLDED ( and yes I did the folding motion with my hand to make sure he understood because clearly he's an idiot) in half and fried so the cheese melts. So he takes the food back to the kitchen and I shit you not, he came back out two minutes later with the same bag so I opened it up right in front of him. He literally put his nasty dirty fingers on the food and picked the green pepper and onion off. So not only was the food disgusting, but the guy that runs the place definitely should be running like a nasty Coney Island and stop calling what ever he's serving at Mexican gardens, "Mexican food". Had a very nice dinner at this restaurant. It is a good place for a reasonably priced meal. First thing they do is greet you with chips. I am not even kidding, we had barely sat down and the chips and salsa were already at the table. They give you mild and hot salsa with it as well. To start things off, I ordered a Coronarita. That is the one reason why I am not giving this place five stars. The margarita had too much mix in it, it didn't taste good. I threw the whole corona in it to mask the taste. My food otherwise, was fantastic. I had the steak and chicken fajitas and the steak was absolutely perfect. It was seasoned perfectly. The rice and fried beans were delicious as well. I really wanted to leave a better review. The food here is decent, and the best option I found so far for Mexican in downriver. They have this amazing Mexican chicken-noodle/tortilla-esque soup they give for free during lunch but on this particular visit they ran out and I came during dinner. I was very dissapointed bc the soup alone is a big reason why i stopped in this day. I didnt know it was exclusive to lunch and my waitress was rude to me explaining this. I almost left but instead talked to a cashier girl and GM who happened to be there that day and explained everything to me. Ordered beef n cheese enchiladas and crunchy flour taco. Not the most amazing Mexican but decent. I hope they make that soup a regular menu item. read more

This was one of our favorite take out places for Mexican food. Went here for many years. Food always tasted great. Unfortunately on two separate take out visits, spaced 6 months or more apart, the take out food had hair in it. The first time we excused it as a fluke. But the second time ruined it for us. Holly smokes where do I start, I have been going to Mexican Gardens for a long time before I moved to the area. The beef Chimey dinner is absolutely fabulous, Its is perfectly fried. The Botana I get beef and bean sometimes, guac no guac, peppers no peppers. Through the years, it is always a quality staple. Ive tried the downtown restaurants - they just like to churn people in and out of the seats. MG cares about your experience. Yes the chips are always fresh out of the fryer. and the salsa made that day. But that's the easy part. Hands down, Mexican Gardens is one of the best restaurants in the area if you're looking for good food, great service, and a jovial atmosphere. We had a party of almost 20 people and one waitress served us flawlessly and quickly. The food there is very good and comes easily recommended. This place has really gone downhill over the past 20 plus years of going here. We ordered fajitas without tomatoes and onions. It came with both so we sent it back. It came back not sizzling with a few tomatoes and onions still intermingled. Waitress didn't come back until time for the bill. So we picked around them, luckily not allergic. I am a regular here. It is my absolute favorite place to come, for many reasons. First off, the service is great, it is always busy and you are always seated fast, and taken care of. Great people who work there. Next off, the food, I get the same thing every single time, and it's been years, and it is perfect every single time. (The hard shell tacos) The strawberry daiquiri is phenomenal, I am of age, and I am telling you that I prefer the Virgin one, they are just too good!! As for the soup that you normally get, that is just included, that is amazing too. And let's not forget the perfect chips and salsa, which they happily refill whenever you start to run low. I stopped in to Mexican Gardens at lunchtime on Cinco de Mayo and the restaurant was well staffed and the kitchen seemed quick and efficient. They have a good amount of tables so we didn't wait long to be sat. I didn't eat, but the food looked and smelled amazing! The portions looked large and my friend really enjoyed her food. They also had a beer tent that was opening at 5pm for Cinco de Mayo festivities! I will definitely be back for food next time! read more

The server was irritating; asked for salt & she tossed paper packets of salt on our table, dropped chips on the floor that were supposed to be for our table. I have been to Mexican Gardens a number of times and haven't been disappointed. A couple of times the food hasn't been that great, but that's it and probably just a cook on an off day. We went again last Sunday and I got what I always seem to get these days - the fajita quesadillas, this time with steak and shrimp. It was one of the best fajita style meals I've ever had. Easily as good as chilis, with the shrimp plump and juicy and the steak tasting exactly like carne asada should, flavorful, slightly crisp but tender inside. As always the rice and beans were good, but to be honest I don't really care that much for either as a standalone item. Their chips and salsa are good without being great. Munchable items while waiting for your main course. Service is always timely and efficient here, so you don't need to worry about the wait, but we've never felt pressured to leave. So, if you want good mexican food and are in the area, Mexican Gardens will not disappoint. read more

This is legit Mexican food by a multi-generation Mexican family. Outside of Mexicantown in Detroit, you won't find better. You'll wait for a table on weekends Precisely because the food is great. There is a large, comfortable waiting area by the full bar, which serves up a wide variety of beers and delicious margaritas. If you like tostitos and pace salsa, you probably won't like the homemade chips and salsa here. The chips are warm, thick and have a delicious corn flavor. The salsa is made from scratch and cooked for a rich and spicy taste (hot or mild, as you prefer.) If you think "On The Border" is good Mexican food, then you probably won't like the food here because it doesn't come from cans. All the sauces, rice and entrees are made fresh and have been for a couple generations now. The fajitas are the best I've had anywhere and the enchilada sauce is a deep, brown gravy that is unmatched in my experience. The prices are commensurate with the quality of the food -- this isn't taco bell. It's fresh and portioned generously. My wife and I eat here regularly and the check is less than our tab at Red Robin. I would pay much more for food this good. read more
