I've been on the hunt for some really good Mexican food in the area and my search brought me to Mexican Mariachi. My first time ordering from here will unfortunately be my last. Probably an outlier, but my delivery order had some major problems. First, my chips and guacamole - I only received a big container of chips - no guacamole. Oh well, mistakes happen. I start eating my food and begin with the beans and rice. They were pretty tasty until I found a nice long white hair in my beans! I tossed it aside and didn't eat my beans. I moved on to the birria tacos. Two bites in to my taco, I got another long hair, from well inside the taco! I got a full refund and through all the food out. The tacos had a decent amount of meat but had maybe three little pieces of diced onion and no consommé. I've definitely tasted better, not including the hair. WEAR A DAMN HAIRNET!! read more

I ate Birria tacos many spot, this places doesn't disappoint. 3) The prices are very reasonable. 4) Glad there is a fast casual Mexican spot at TCNJ. Cons: *The main con is, there is a little language barrier with some reps. So, please be slow and clear, or else, they will say "no" (even if they have the item) or not give you the right order. We ordered 3 chicken salad bowls and a chicken quesadilla. The bill was about $45. You have options for including rice and black beans or pinto beans. We didn't ask about veggies nor did we see any. We chose chicken and various salsas like pico a hot salsa salsa verde and a cilantro onion mix. There is also a choice of mozzarella. Grated cheese and maybe a parm. Jalapeños. Guacamole is extra pineapple pieces sour cream and more. The portions are relatively small and the chicken freshly heated was rubbery and hard and most pieces were baby size bites. The quesadilla had a nice char flavor and came with rice and beans and salsa. The staff was friendly. Many upcharge posted in glass of serving area. Bags of chips are extra now too. Ate dinner here a couple weeks back and it was OK but not amazing. First, there weren't many people working so the service was slightly slow, but not a huge deal. My chicken tacos were alright (I was happy that they were pretty filling because the order only came with two of them) but nothing extraordinary, and no super spicy salsa for me :( Finally, our side of guacamole was pretty mediocre. The location was kind of cool (right near TCNJ!) and we enjoyed sitting outside and hanging out. Overall, not a terrible experience but I don't know if I'd come back. read more

Mexican Mariachi Grill gives you a lot of food for under $10.00! It's located very close to The College of New Jersey. The space inside is long, dark, and narrow. The walls, floor, and tables are all the same deep brown wood, and my first impression was of being inside a casket. What kind of a decorative theme is that?! Then I noticed the giant sepia photos of Old West horse thieves on the walls and the font of the menu along with titles like "Most Wanted," and realized this restaurant was going for a Western Outlaw kind of vibe. It wasn't working for me but I was getting my lunch to go so I didn't have to look at the decor for long. The order counter is set up like a Chipotle or Moe's, with the prepared ingredients lined up and an employee guiding customers to make decisions about what ingredients to put into the burrito or quesadilla. I asked for a vegetarian quesadilla and the server said "chicken or beef?" I said "neither, just cheese" and she shook her head no and said "Chicken," and put chicken onto the quesadilla. I'm actually not a vegetarian (just felt like having a cheese quesadilla today) and was in a rush so I accepted the chicken quesadilla. Then my friend ordered a burrito with chicken and the same server put beef on it. We got rice, refried black beans, and little cups of sour cream, pico di gallo, medium salsa (called hot but it was definitely medium), and mild salsa. All the food tasted ok. My friend and I were each full after eating half, so I will have the rest for dinner. It was decent food and basically I got two full meals for my ten bucks. Not a fan of the Chipotle approach to Mexican food, I was disappointed that the new Mariachi Grill in Campus Town on the edge of The College of New Jersey adopted that process. Their shops on Parkway in Ewing and Quakerbridge in Hamilton are the traditional full kitchen variety, and are pretty good representations of Mexican American cuisine. Although the "pick your ingredients" can be considered the way to customize a taco or burrito, to me it seems more the way to limit the menu to only a few possibilities, while preparation of the elements in advance means you often secure overcooked and dried out parts. A look at all the choices on the steam table behind the counter, offered proof of theory. The steak, chicken and ground beef all seemed desiccated and lacking energy. They were out of the al pastor (roast pork & pineapple), and the only remaining juicy-looking choice was the carnitas (BBQ pork). I went with that in their duo taco plate (rice, black beans, lettuce, tomato, lime, radish & pico). The double tortilla soft shell kept its poise throughout the meal, with minimal leakage. They were tasty and well spiced. The rice and beans were forgettable. At just under $9 with drink, the price was fair. I left belly full. Still, I prefer other Mexican dishes like chili rellenos and flautas, not to mention fresh fish and fruit drinks, much more than tacos, burritos and quesadillas, which all have the same contents with different packaging. Such variety was not on the menu there, although they are in their other tiendas. If all you desire is basic Mexifast food, you can be satisfied at Mariachi. But, Mexican cuisine is far more diverse and delicious than portrayed here, and deserving of exploration and ravishing. There are plenty of those places across Trenton, Hamilton and Hightstown. Once seduced by those amazing spicy senoritas, it is difficult to really enjoy the Chipotle approach to South of the Border cooking. read more

The environment is pretty modern and cool looking. Very tight spaces to sit as their efforts to fit as many tables and chairs were successful. I opted for the chicken quesadilla which I'm sure is a favorite. I was pretty underwhelmed by the quesadilla. They used mozzarella cheese which I wasn't a fan of. The chicken was pretty bland. Overall the quesadilla was just blah. The rice and beans as a side was just okay; nothing to write home about or at least craving to come back. Ordered takeout from here twice and delivery once. We weren't particularly impressed the first two times but being as there aren't many options of this kind in the area, gave it a third try for delivery last weekend. We ordered a quesadilla and a steak burrito totaling $28 including the delivery fee of $5 and another $5 for tip because I'm assuming the fee doesn't go to the driver (who also couldn't be bothered to look up from his phone to respond to our hello and thank you). Now let me make it clear I worked in the restaurant industry for many years and don't like to complain unless it's justified. I am also not dramatic and I totally understand that with deliveries food may not be as fresh as if you ate in the restaurant, and that any place can have a "bad night". That being said the food I received was really that bad and I've attached pictures of the quesadilla as I feel they speak for themselves. It came as one soggy lump and I tried to pull it apart before deeming it unsalvageable. Prices here are fairly reasonable. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and is fairly large on the inside. The burritos are good, kind of short for my liking but very thick.
