I first went to the Mexican Shop in the very late 70's, early 80's. Those were the days of punk rock and neon, I'd go there for chunky and wild plastic jewelry, nothing ethnic about it. I've been going back from time to time over the last 40+ years for nostalgia's sake as well as some kitschy goodness. It is still fun to browse and I almost always find something to, if not love, at least like a lot. The store is brimming from wall to wall, ceiling to floor, with merchandise. They still have the kind of earrings I used to go in for but their jewelry spans design and price (I don't think there is anything that would break the bank). They have a middling amount of clothing from tops-bottoms, socks-outerwear, including hats and scarves- most everything is relatively inexpensive, albeit not really for the budget conscious. They have buttons, patches, greeting cards, gift items, etc. During this ongoing pandemic you are required to be masked, use the provided hand sanitizer, then glove up with their provided gloves. While employees are also masked, curiously, they are not gloved. BTW, they are currently selling adorable masks from $12-$18 (I think those are the correct prices). Speaking of curious things, though they do carry lots of items that have an "ethnic" aesthetic, I don't really believe their merchandise is what I consider to be found in exotic foreign places. Excuse me if I'm sounding snarky but I'm just wondering about the name of the store and the name's implication.

Is there a website to shop from?

What was the inspiration for calling your shop, The Mexican Shop?

I know this one: The owner, who opened it over 45 years ago, used to go down and buy cool stuff in Mexico, then bring it to Evanston to sell--thus the name. Over the years, the place evolved but the customers never wanted the name to change! Now… Read more

I got a ton of great unique jewelry, some summer dresses and shrugs, a few housewares items, and great customer service.

(They do all their buying in Europe.) it's definitely higher end, though I have also found some really great things on their sale rack. This is retail at its finest due to the personal attention. The owners are so sweet and very honest. (Plus, they have great taste.) They'll style you and happily bring you things if you'd like. I can always count on them - if something doesn't look good they'll let me know. I've also bought things off of their Instagram and they happily drop it off at my home in one of their gorgeous bags. That's awesome. I always leave with great styles & feeling cheerful. I have several friends who feel the same. .

It's a beautiful warm and humid day in Chicago and the walk was good. The place is very quaint and small but well lit for shopping. It's a woman's boutique specializing in European clothing. The major designer is Solar and I have not heard of it, but designs are suited for a dressier woman. Thankfully that counts me in as I work in an office where jeans are not allowed and it's conservative so the weekends I can go casual. Back to the store the sizes are European and the lady at the counter (I am assuming is the owner) was very kind to tell me that 34 is usually x-small, 36 is small and 38 is medium. I'm usually a medium but some of her clothing allow for a 34 when I tried on a pair of white slacks. It had a great fit, but buying white is difficult because the material may be more revealing than you might like. Her clothes has many price points as she indicated and sales from the previous season is 20% off. Her summer selection drove me to walk in full of blight yellows, pink, and orange. Do stop in if you're in the neighborhood and support local small businesses!

However, after my visit today, I will no longer be patronizing this business. After trying on several items, I wanted to purchase a dress. However, said item had hairs on it, to a noticeable degree (the customer checking out next to me agreed). Besides being obviously unhygienic, I was worried about allergies, as I am alergic to cats and wondered if somebody with an animal had tried it on previously. When I got up to the front and asked for an additional 10% off for this (as I would need to have it cleaned before wearing), the owner played the nut role and made me repeat my request by saying, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" When I reiterated my request, she silently rang me up and presented my $124 worth of merchandise without so much as a thank you or a smile. Obviously, in a snit. I chewed on this, went to the bathroom and then calmly said to her that I was a regular customer, had been for years, and I wondered (since during my previous visits, I have never gotten the full service that the older white customers seem to get, as I can hear them being helped and conversed with while I am not checked on) whether she would be acting like she was doing me a favor by selling to me if I wasn't black. Just as a "shot in the dark", so to speak, since she was so short-tempered and rude to me. And she said, "Let's not go there." Which is not an apology. Or even a proper rebuttal, I might add. Now, in my experience, as a 50-year-old black woman working and living in virtually all white spaces my entire life, when people say something like that to you, in a dismissive, hostile tone, that you have struck a nerve. Especially when you are not even given the benefit of eye contact. Which is to say, I was right. They have many a good sale here as of late, no doubt due to the state of the economy and the lack of interest in brick and mortar stores. My hope, however is that when you patrons out there DO go to a retail space in person, you choose one that treats ALL customers with the respect, kindness and humanity no doubt EVERYONE deserves. Which certainly can't be found at Accents Plus. Who should settle for anything less?
