I don't normally write negative reviews but after having "lunch" at Mexican Village, I have the need to. 1. The salsa was an absolute disappointment. It was tomatoe sauce. There was no seasoning and the chips were stale. I always devour the chips and salsa at any local Mexican restaurant and after two chips I was done. 2. When we asked for hot sauce I expected something like Tapatío, Valentina, Chalupa,etc. Instead we were given more salsa which tasted worse than the first. 3. Gravy. I have never been to a restaurant that serves enchiladas with G R A V Y. Mexican enchiladas typically come with green or red sauce. Now when I read it on the menu I assumed they just called it gravy as opposed to salsa. It was literally gravy you'd pour on mashed potatoes. That's what I get for assuming. 4. The rice & the beans came from a can. There's do doubt in my mind. 5. They had no Mexican drinks: Horchata, Tamarindo, Jamaica? Shit. It was 5 de Mayo and they didn't even offer margaritas. 6. They couldn't get my friends order right. After it came back wrong the second time - he wouldn't touch it. It was simple instructions too, like no cheese and beef. 7. The music. This one is more personal preference but what mexican restaurant doesn't play hispanic or Latin music? Again - on 5 de Mayo. Please avoid this place or you'll end up on the toilet like myself. Wish I could give this place less than 1-star. The restaurant was dirty our table was dirty when they sat us. The salsa is not a salsa at all but tomato sauce with seasoning that you could feel in your mouth. They cover everything with gravy.... really gravy gross!!! I will give them less than 1-star. First, the gravy in all the choices is not very consistent with Mexican food. The gravy is salty, wayery, and not flavorful. The salsa is horrible, not flavorful, very (very!) acidic, not the right consistency, and seems to be loaded with tomato paste or plain old ketchup. The same goes with the guacamole, however, the guac was like a paste. Both of those items are the worst I ever had. I know there are many ways to dress a pig, however, it is useless if you kill the pig in the process. Hopefully, you get my point. The fajitas were less than expected for the price. We ordered the mixed, the meat looks old and the flavor was suspicious. The plate was not cooked to sizzling, and it was a bit cold. In fact, the vegetables were not completely cooked, and they felt like they were raw. The "Mexican" rice was not cooked. The beans looked like pre-cooked. They looked very suspicious. Quite possibly the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Salsa is like low end canned tomatoes in tomato sauce. We ate three baskets of chips as a family and didn't come close to using half of one salsa serving. Traditional Tex-Mex menu with several American items...should have been a tip to steer clear of the Mexican items. Ordered fajitas that came out warm, not sizzling. The chicken burrito was large but bland. Spanish rice was a lot like Old El Paso from the can....Server was super nice and the manager was helpful. Too bad the food was so disappointing. There aren't many times in your life that you can feel like you stepped out of reality and in to a world where nothing is as it's supposed to be. This is one of those magical experiences that you'll never forget. The restaurant decor is wonderfully authentic inside and out right down the music, Aretha Franklin singing "Respect". This is a great place if your looking for mexican food blended with thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps you've never had a mashed potato and gravy burrito, or you've never even thought of the possibility of such a thing, this is the place to go. If your stomach comes expecting the zesty taste of enchilada sauce or spicy chips and salsa, it will leave very surprised and confused about the Midwest style Christmas dinner you just fed it. Besides the decor and serving Dos Equis, the only thing mexican about Mexican Village is that it's down the street from a Taco Bell. We really enjoyed our meal. read more

My food was delicious and the service was quick. Our waitress checked on us quite a few times but not to the point where it was annoying. The hostess was friendly and sweet and seated us quickly. The onnnnly thing I wish had been better is our waitress totally disappeared and we had to wait a while for anyone to collect payment after our check had been dropped off. Someone may of said it best when they say Mexican Village is an acquired taste. I haven't lived in the area for years, but every so often I'll be back and this is a must do for me. I'm guessing my first visit was in the late 60's (was downtown back then). I love their hot sauce - since it is different than all the other places. At our recent lunch visit (1st in 4 years) I found the food tasty as usual, and the lunch specials very reasonably priced. Based on the full house, it looked like others would agree. read more

Normally I enjoy going to this hole in the wall restaurant. Friendly staff that never seem to disappoint a person in customer service. However the food this time was just bad. The chips were so stale and were just gross. When the waitress brought out the chips they tasted awful and maybe that ruined the taste for the rest of the food. I had a burrito and it was so spicy I could barely finish half of it...I had sweat poring off my forehead. Warning-there is nothing Mexican to be found on these walls. I was shocked to find gravy on my "enchiladas" after asking the waitress if they meant mole-type sauce when the said gravy in the menu description. It was gravy. Thanksgiving style gravy. Salsa tasted like it was full of cumin and canned tomatoes, chips weren't fantastic either. We ended up leaving and headed to Casa Mexico instead (in East Grand Forks, pretty authentic) I was mortified to discover that they advertise "gravy" on burritos and enchiladas! I can't believe there were so many people here! I ordered 3 chicken soft tacos. They consisted of what tasted like canned chicken in a tortilla, with cheddar melted over the outside (?!?!) of the taco. This forced you to cut through the rubbery tortilla and use a fork. There was a pile of lettuce and a couple of tomato chunks in the middle. My coworker was equally disappointed with his chimichanga, beans and rice. It all seemed dry and overcooked, like what you would see in a microwaved burrito. The chips taste stale to me an the salsa was watery tomato sauce with no real flavor. My husband and I just moved to Grand Forks and decided to try this place when he was craving Mexican food. We would have been better off going to Taco Bell! He ordered an "enchilada" that looked more like a soggy taquito, and the refried beans that came with it were dry. From the looks of it they prepare a big batch and reheat it in the microwave, so it didn't look, or taste fresh at all. I ordered a beef taco in a soft shell without olive or tomatoes, which was basically, again, DRY, flavorless beef, in a soggy tortilla with melted cheese, surrounded by lettuce and shredded cheese on the plate. Very blegh, and now my hubby and I are both feeling gross as the food settles uneasily. Also, the salsa was so boring. It really didn't have any flavor AT ALL. Just watery tomato taste. The service could have been better too. The host who sat as was monotone and couldn't be bothered to pretend he wants to be there (I work in the food service, so I know its not that hard) and while our waitress was nice she wasn't very prompt, we probably sat for five minutes before she took our drink order, and I only think she checked on us one which means we had to wait longer than we should have for our check. The place was not busy enough to write this behavior off. Here's the thing, working in food service, I get it, and if I thin you did a decent job, you at least tried, I'll be nice and tip you and come back (if the food is good), you you do a teeny bit above average I will probably over tip you. But its a double edged sword, I know how this business should go, and this was a crappy restaurant. I wouldn't be surprised to see a deplorable kitchen. My favorite place to go when I go to grand forks. The Salsa is heaven!!! We get the mix by the case so we can make it anytime we want here in Arizona. The Enchiladas are wonderful! The Cheese Tostadas are also a must that is If you can get to your main meal without filling up on the chips and salsa. This is a diamond in the rough. My daughter and I went here yesterday. The food was very bland. You don't need 6 pounds of shredded lettuce on a tiny little enchilada. It doesn't make it seem as though there is more of what you actually wanted and what little there is is cold and tasteless. Not only was the food disgusting, but the service was nonexistent. It seems like once a year the wife and I get an itching for some fine dining from the Mexican Village. So this last weekend we stopped for a late lunch. I had the Norwegian Taco (odd name for a Mexican place) and the wife had the Chicken Taco Salad. She had no complaints about the Salad, I didn't ask either (my bad). I blamed it on my taco. It wasn't what I expected and I wasn't expecting much. I knew it wasn't going to be as good as the Taco's from the Uffda-Taco cart that comes around during the summer, but I was hoping it would come close. The bread was soggy and so was the lettuce, which really got to me. I can't stand soggy veggies. On the positive side I had plenty of room for dessert. So we ordered the fried mmmmmmm... umm... oh yeah the fried ice creammmmm... Let's say if this is all they served I would give them 10 stars. It meets one of my two rules for lustful food: 1. Fry it 2. Add bacon to it By the way, please don't add bacon to the fried ice cream, maybe candied bacon, maybe. I know there are other restaurants in Grand Forks that have this amazing dish, but they don't use the cinnamon ice cream and therefore fail. So if your looking for some great Mexican you're looking in the wrong place. If you are looking for the best Fried Ice Cream in town you've found it. This is by no means authentic Mexican food, but it's perfect for Grand Forks. They have taken Mexican food, and put a norwegian spin on it. I strongly recommend the burritos, but suggest you try one of the alternative gravies. You can get a spicier red, chicken pepper, or even queso instead of the standard brown (beef flavor) gravy. The quesadilla's are one of my favorite items on the menu, because they put a layer of jalapeño cheese dip on the bottom tortilla (which is crispy instead of just a plain flour tortilla). The food is always fresh and the service is quick. They serve hot sauce instead of salsa, which throws some people off, but it is done just right with freshly made chips. I think Mexican Village is an acquired taste for some, but will keep you coming back for more. The prices can't be beat either! read more

In my travels, I have found that there are three types of Mexican food to be had. The first is "Authentic" Mexican, which features corn, pork, rice and black beans. The second is "Cali-Mex" which features fresh vegetables, fruit based salsas and seafood. The third is the popular "Tex-Mex" which the majority of America is familiar with. As Tex-Mex restaurants go, I'd say Mexican Village is pretty good. The portions are fair and have the right amount of the familiar elements of Americanized Mexican food such as cheese, beef, refried pinto beans and sour cream. As stated in the previous reviews, Mexican Village does have it's culinary drawbacks. However, these are minor and can be remedied. I agree with Elese P that the ground beef is under spiced and I suspect that this has to do with the notoriously unadventurous American-Norwegian palates it has to cater to in the local population more than anything. I have also eaten at their competition down the street at the North Dakota based chain restaurant Paradiso and found the same underwhelming spice profile in their food as well. It is, as they say, a "local thing". On the subject of Mexican Village's table salsa, I think it would be better described as a thick hot sauce which is, after all, how they advertise it. It is quite flavorful, despite it's simplicity and is a very good compliment to the food. Now, on to a major source of contention for some: The gravy. Some, Like Drew B in his review, have real issues with it. I am not one of those people. In fact, I find it rather tasty, if not under spiced like the rest of the menu and quite authentic when taken into account that authentic Tex-Mex places in Texas serve gravy over their burritos as well. All in all, I recommend Mexican Village as a nice, locally owned and operated Tex Mex alternative to the flashier and more expensive, but equally flavored Paradiso. read more
