I love this place and make sure to go whenever I'm in Grand Forks. Which, admittedly, hasn't been since way before the pandemic, so I hope it's still good. The only downside was when I went several years ago, they wouldn't accept a Canadian debit card that didn't have the Visa/Mastercard logo on it, which seemed very behind the times. read more

On our almost-annual road trip across America, we found ourselves in Grand Forks, ND to visit with family, enjoy summer sunsets that end at 11 P.M., and maybe get lucky with a couple of summer lightning storms. Coming from Southern California, and experiencing what passes for Mexican food across this great nation, we were pleasantly surprised with Paradiso! Mrs. Picante, her father (who lives about an hour out of Grand Forks), and our three little chili peppers came here for lunch on a Monday afternoon. The two younger kids ordered the chicken tenders with fries, my eldest got the bean and cheese burrito, I ordered the fajita burrito, FIL got the beef burrito, and Mrs. Picante went with the street tacos. Everything we got was better than I expected, and in fact, delicious. Monday BOGO free burritos made it even better. As for my fajita burrito, the meat was tender, well-seasoned, and balanced with peppers and onions. Portions were also large, and we ended up taking home a few to-go boxes of leftovers. Service from Taylor was incredible-- attentive, kind to my kiddos, and knowledgeable about the menu. She was quick to bring out their well-marketed free chips and salsa, kept refills of drinks and salsa happening, did those little extras like put lids on the kids' water cups, and checked in with us appropriately during our meal. As a spice junkie, there was no heat in the food-- the salsa was mild, and so was the food. This did not detract from the flavor or the experience, but if you're looking for some picante, you're gonna have to ask for it I suppose. My hat's off to Paradiso for doing Mexican well in a place that I wouldn't expect it. We will be back to see you again... but probably not until next summer when our travels bring us here. This place needs some new cooks... I was there with a group of 9 people. I ordered Nachos. I kind you not my nachos came out with dried out cheddar cheese on it, literally an 1/8 of a cup of shredded cheese that had been microwaved. Then it looked like they sprinkled an 1/8 cup of dried out ground beef they found on the floor. Then placed a few fresh slices from a jar of jalapenos. Yeah...that's it. Paradiso is a mainstay of the Grand Forks restaurant scene, and a family favorite for us. They have been in business since 1978 and thanks to their consistently excellent service, delicious cuisine, and festive ambiance, they are likely to be a fixture of the community for decades to come. Their famous catch phrase, "Chips are free, dinner extra," has drawn in many patrons over the years, who have become regulars for good reason. Who doesn't love free chips and salsa? The tortilla chips arrive to your table warm, and the waitstaff keep the salsa flowing and another basket of chips is on the way. I can't tell you how many times I've had the pleasure of dining at Paradiso in my life, but it's easily a couple thousand. I find myself there at minimum a couple times a month. My number one reason for this is that the service has been outstanding every time. Friendly, attentive, competent, quick, and accurate, these servers don't disappoint. There's also tons of seating and plenty of parking, so even if you walk in at any of their busiest times, you don't have to wait long for a table. The kitchen has their menu items down to a science. My favorite thing on the menu, the Incredible One (an enchilada in a flour tortilla with sides of rice and refried beans) is a perfect amount of food and it's exactly the same every single time I've ever ordered it. Delicioso! I like red gravy and ground beef in mine, but they also offer chicken, cheese, or shredded beef, and green gravy. Other go-tos are the Dos Tacos and the Soft-Shell Taco Grande. If you have any more room on your table, you may want the fajitas - every time I smell them sizzling I want them too. And if you have any more room in your tummy, the fried ice cream is a no-brainer. It's the perfect dessert to share with a loved one. No review of Paradiso would be complete without a mention of the space and the decor. This is one of the most aesthetically pleasing restaurants in all of Grand Forks, with ceramic-tile wall murals depicting a variety of scenery of Mexico, Murano-style glass pendant lights above the booth tables, terra cotta tile roof accents (a nod to traditional roof design), exquisite stained glass embellishing partition walls, whimsical statues and sculpture, and vintage photographs of famous and not-so-famous people of México. Wood-and-wrought-iron sconces adorn one section while a stunning Tiffany-style demisphere chandelier dominates the main dining room. The whole place is at once bright and festive, yet cozy and intimate. Augmenting the visual feast is the cheerful music, much of it mariachi, all of it delightful. The Mrs and I have both love Mexican Food and been in Grand Forks for about 3 months without getting our Mexican food fix. Paradiso our choice yesterday based on a quick google search. The complementary chips and salsa they provide we're actually good, especially the salsa, so were excited to order. We ordered macho nachos for an appetizer, this was the beginning of the downward spiral. The nachos were overly cheesy (I normally love cheese) and soggy because of it. We ordered it with chicken, which was buried under the soggy nacho mess. We both felt there was very little authentic flavors and spices, in fact they were mostly just tasteless, except for the jalapeño. We did eat some because we were hungry but left about half. I actually used the complementary chips to add a bit of spice, flavor and crunch to the chicken and thank goodness for 6-7 slices of jalapenos to help. The rest of the meal was basically the same underwhelming tasteless food. Wifey ordered the flautas meal (about $17) It came with beans, rice and 4 flautas. She didn't realize they were deep fried (her fault) so was a little disappointed but decided to eat (try to eat) anyway. I ordered one of their combo platters (about $18) but I forget what the name was. It came with a taco, a soggy flour tortilla the middle of plate with tasteless beef inside, and 2 flautas. I ate a couple bites of my tastless taco, with the complementary salsa here also, and gave the rest to my wife because she hated the greasy flautas. I also ate most of the beef from the tortilla and both did eat the beans and some of the dry Mexican rice, but we left way over half of both our meals. But the Negro Modelo was awesome! I should mention the watrres was very kind and did a good job. We paid our bill and left without comment. BTW...We were not asked at the end of the meal, i think the waitress chose not to when she noticed the amount of food we were leaving. For what it's worth, we do far better at home using kitchen cupboard spices or even McCormick spices to whip up some tacos than what we expirenced there. We will not be a returning. read more

My favorite restaurant here in Grand Forks. For four years I've been eating and packing on the pounds with this place. Let me tell ya, it's a treat for the soul to come here. Let's start off with the actual restaurant itself. FUN MUSIC, CUTE SCENERY, SNAZZY BOOTHS, aaannndddd A LOT OF SPACE!!! The place is always roomy with lots of people and is just a family atmosphere. It definitely feels like a trip to Mexico. I love the food. I have ordered pretty much everything from carne asada (tender and moist), jalapeño cream cheese chimichangas (rich and flavorful), shrimp tacos (fresh and citrus flavored), and have had many drinks here too. They always serve you plenty of chips and salsa for an appetizer and the waitress constantly comes back to top off your bowl of salsa if you're a little piggy like me that smothers your chip with salsa so much that it's too heavy for your chip. The drinks and nice and my favorite are the many different lemonade drinks you can get. You can order a whole pitcher of margaritas too. Although, I don't drink so I'll stick to lemonade and soda. The service is always on time and they never rush you. The desserts are awesome and the price is very good for the food. What more do you want???? WELL ILL TELL YOU!!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here! Service was fast and even though we came during dinner rush we were seated within 30 seconds of arriving. Waitress was very kind and accommodating. Although most of the reviews here complain about the food, I am from Arizona where there is very authentic Mexican food and I can honestly say, for Grand Forks North Dakota, the food was delicious! The only thing I will say is my plate came with about a teaspoon of rice and a pool of beans. Once I told the waitress though, she immediately brought me more rice. Their sign got me... that's they they pay for the signs right? To bring in business? Well they had me at "kids eat free" .... because I was traveling alone with 3 kids 5 and under. They have super-fun colorful and Uber-sweet drinks for the kids to have... which they throughly enjoyed. And in case you are wondering YES.... ALL my kids ate free. They waitress even encouraged me to order a third kids meal for my 12 month old since it would be free, which was great since of course, my one son emphatically stated what he wanted then hated it as soon as it was placed on the table (without even trying it). What I ordered was good too. Probably overall pretty typical Mexican food. You won't be going on any cultural adventures here, but definitely worth the price I paid. Don't be fooled by the reviews it is that bad. Keep in mind you are about as far away from the Mexican border while being close to some sort of civilization in the US! That being said, the atmosphere is odd. It's like a cross between Tijuana and Chinatown. Also, too many screaming kids. The chips are straight from a bag not made on site. One positive is that I did try a new Mexican beer that was tasty, which raised it from 1 star. My service was fine. The chicken chimi left a lot to be desired. First off it was so flippin hot I had to let it cool for 5min while eating more crappy chips. The only way to describe the sauce-pot roast gravy? The best item in the plate was the beans. Yuck. Americanized Mexican food that tastes like it was warmed up in the microwave. The only thing I actually enjoy here are the chips and salsa but even the chips tasted bad last time I went. No, this restaurant is not authentic, and the vibe is a little like a carnival (I don't typically go to restaurants w a kids menu), but for a platter w tamale and taco and vegan sides, I loved it and - furthermore - I look forward to going back.... hopefully this week ;) I would give 5 stars, but so far it doesn't like they offer non-dairy cheese or sour cream. UUUgh! I have lived in GF all of my life and have always praised this restaurant forever, but those days are long gone. It has gone down, down, down hill to say the VERY least. Where are the original chips you used to serve??? The new ones now are garbage, absolute garbage that I can get at the local grocery store. Drive the extra few minutes to Casa Mexico on the east side so you do not have to suffer through the service and the horrible food I had today. The atmosphere upon entering the restaurant is like Mexico itself. Lots of brightly coloured tile, pictures and statues and Mexican music all coming together to give the feeling of having traveled. We were promptly served a basket of chips with delicious salsa, which was refilled nearly the second I had emptied it. Our waitress was never far yet I didn't feel the least bit smothered either. The dishes are huge and very tasty and average around $11 for the platters or combination plates. The Margarita pitchers were also very inexpensive at only $9 for about 4 full drinks and yet delicious. And every day they had a different special offer. The night we went they had a buy one get one free dessert offer. Of course, after such a huge, delicious meal, dessert was the last thing I needed but I couldn't resist trying it. The fried ice cream did not disappoint. Though I had no criticism whatsoever, I was unable to finish it, but it was fun trying. read more
