She seemed either overwhelmed or not really interested, so we waited longer than expected for someone to take our order. A manager eventually came over and greeted us after noticing us sitting there with our menus closed and looking around, which I appreciated. As for the food, it was edible but lacked flavor. Let me start by saying - We had a huge group - over 30 and they placed us in the back area. That part was great, because we had a nice private area. But let's talk about the food and service. I was not impressed with the service nor the food overall. My carne asada (steak alone) was very good BUT the rice seemed like an afterthought and tasted undercooked or day old. It was just hard. The pico de gallo was super fresh so that's a plus too! The white sauce was thicker than I am used to - and not great to me. But I think white sauce is subjective. We had one server for that large of a party when we were told we would have 2. When the food came out, it was totally disorganized and they didn't know who ordered what. FYI we were also told that groups that large cannot have separate checks so we had to go to the front and tell them what we ordered to pay. That created a huge line when it was time to go. I will not rush to go back. I was thankful to celebrate what we did with who we did in a private setting, but it would not be my go-to for Mexican food. To get it close to o the way I like it, I ordered the guacamole and added it to the nachos. It was very good. The specialty mixed drink, I had was very balanced and delicious without being too sweet. Kudos to the bartender. The salsa was very tasty and the cheese dip was good. Mr. Pepe would never!!! I ordered the shrimp and crab dip via UberEats. The food was delivered with 3 tortilla chips in the dip. Not only were they soggy, but when I called the restaurant and requested the situation be mitigated, the owner, Eddy, brushed off my complaint. I had to then drive to the restaurant in order to pick up a new order- without the chips in it! Terrible customer service- I will not take my money there again. Stay away from this place! read more

We ordered tonight via grub hub and had a little snafu so to speak. Looks like what may have happened is the wrong ticket was stapled to the bag. I called the restaurant to let them know. They were so lovely in correcting the order. We don't live far so we told them we would just run up and get the order. The gentleman who helped me was amazing. Way to go on updating the menu! New clean menus and updated. Tonite I ordered the spinach quesadilla filled with sautéed spinach, potato, zucchini, squash, onion and cheese. Incredible I would definitely order it again. Loaded with flavor and not soggy, which was what I expected. The Gen Z's rushing around like arrows need to take note: don't talk about your pay with customers or complain about your side work (that's part Of the job role) . If you never worked as a server, the hourly rate is somewhere between $2.15 and $3 (not sure if it's changed much since I served). But servers make most of their money from tips. If you never knew that, now you know. It took a good 30+ minutes for our food to come out, but again it's $1 a taco Tuesday. I'm giving 5 stars for the new updated menu and the food. read more

I love this place! I have been to several of their locations, but frequent this one the most. They are consistently good with food and service. Perfect, no, but I have never left unsatisfied. Chips and salsa are great and they will bring you free refills. My only wish is that they also served the white sauce (not queso) that's a little in the sweet side, I'm not sure what it's called. Yuck. Nothing is more frustrating than to have a bad meal and then when you actually say something. It made no affect. I waited tables. If someone said to me man, unfortunately this is just not good.. not sure I'd shrug my shoulders and then hand them a bill for the full amount .. especially if I literally ate nothing but a bite or two it was that bad. So I'm reviewing based on food cause I think service was great & glad they're open through this COVID life. Chips & Salsa good. Margaritas tasted weird. I had my share of different types but there was something about these I couldn't put my finger on. I ordered a chimichanga & was a little thrown back it's not a deep fried burrito but more like taquitos. I ordered beef & it was bland. No flavor. My mom ordered a quesadilla & she said it was just floppy. I feel a quesadilla should be toasty on the outside. My wife order taquito sample & she agreed too steak was dried & potatoes were mushy. Came with a friend, margaritas were okay, my chicken was rubbery, I sent back my whole meal( uneaten) and my friend ate half of his food before feeling ill. They still tried to charge me the $13 for my meal and my friend still paid for his because he had already eaten half and felt he should, even though I told the manager his food made him feel sick. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, in a period in my life where I didn't think that I liked Mexican food, the chain of Mexico restaurants across RVA initially opened my eyes to the fact that I, actually, DID like Mexican food! For that reason alone, Mexico will always hold a place near and dear to my heart... ...that said, sadly, while my love affair with Mexican food initially stated here, my palate must have evolved a bit over time, because this Mexico is NOT what I remember!!! The family and I visited the Chesterfield location off of Hull St. this past weekend in an attempt for some variety to our normal Mexican routine. As I mentioned in another review, our staple for Mexican these days is The Don (Don Pepe), and we almost exclusively go there in most instances. First thing that concerned me about Mexico was there was no wait for a party of 4 at 7 pm on a Friday night. My spider sense was tingling already, and we weren't even seated yet. We were seated promptly and before I could even crack my menu, the waiter was at our table asking us if we were ready to order. We kindly said that we would need some more time, so he took our drink orders and disappeared into the kitchen. Not possibly more than 120 seconds later, he was back with our drinks, again, asking us if we were ready to order. Sheesh! We told him that we hadn't been in a while and would need some more time. He obliged and, believe it or not, was back less than 2 minutes later AGAIN asking us if we were ready to order. Again, we said no, instead I asked if they had any salsa blanco or queso dip -- to which he said yes, and walked away. Ummmm...ok. I probably should have been more clear that I didn't want both, but was simply asking if they had these items -- regardless, he returned with both a few minutes later and...you guessed it...asked us if we were ready to order. Don't get me wrong, I love attentive service, but this was bordering on bothersome. Thankfully we were ready this time and placed our orders: I ordered the carnitas (my measuring stick for the quality of a Mexican restaurant) with spanish rice and refried beans, the wife ordered a chicken quesadilla and side of spanish rice, and my daughter deviated from her normal order and asked for a beef soft taco. I'd say that my meal was far and away the worst of what we ordered. The carnitas were an incredibly disappointing combination of gummy fat chunks and crispy burnt ends, with maybe 20% of the total meat actually being edible roasted pork (it was barely enough to fill one of the three tortillas that were provided). The rice was bland and undercooked (not sure who likes crunchy rice) and the refried beans both looked -- and tasted -- like gray drywall mud. In a word, gross. Normally I could compensate for a subpar dish at a Mexican restaurant with chips, salsa, and queso -- not the case here. The chips were WAY overcooked and tasted like burnt popcorn. The queso was tasty and had a decent amount of warmth from the chilies, but looked like it had been cooking for too long; it had several lumps and wasn't very creamy. Double fail. On a lighter note, the wife LOVED her chicken quesadilla, going as far to say that it was actually better than The Don's. The chicken was actually seasoned (not typical boiled and shredded), and the quesadilla had not only a good amount of creamy cheese, but also had a flavorful combo of diced and grilled green peppers and onions! On the downside, she agreed with me on the rice...no real flavor to speak of at all. My daughter's simple ground beef soft taco was even better than my carnitas. A little on the greasy side, but at least the meat was moist and had a smoky flavor (cumin?). Perhaps the server knew that we were somewhat dissatisfied when he cleared our plates and just about all of us were opting to discard a portion of our meals without boxes, because after the plates were gone, so was he. For easily 10+ minutes and was no where to be found in the dining room. A very unpleasant way to finish a dinner when you have to chase down your server to pay them for food that you didn't like in the first place. I really wanted to give Mexico 1 Star, but the wife convinced me to go for 2 since her quesadilla was actually better than The Don's. That said, Mexico is more expensive (they even charge you $1 for a 2nd bowl of chips) for worse food and inconsistent service. If anything, this was a good exercise to (re)confirm that Don Pepe is still the best in Chesterfield. We won't be back. read more

This is my GO-TO Mexican restaurant. I moved to Midlothian about a year ago. I've tried most of the local Mexican restaurants up and down Hull Street. Nothing comes close. To be fair I can't comment on wait staff because due to the pandemic I haven't eaten-in. But that take-out has been absolutely incredible. Huge proportions and delicious food. Kudos to the chef. And the front desk staff have always been warm, inviting and attentive. I look forward to eating-in soon but I will definitely continue to buy here. Try the Carne Asada. It's divine. read more

The waiter left for like 10 minutes took our order and proceeded to leave for another what I was another 10 minutes. We sat there with empty chips and water glasses and when he finally came back he didn't even offer to refill them. Read about this chain's rapid expansion around Richmond so thought I'd give 'em a try last night. It was National Margarita Day and went with a group of friends. We arrived @ 6 pm on a Monday and the restaurant wasn't even half full. The service was friendly, but slow and inattentive. Our drinks were empty for quite a while, as were our chips. Some members of our party needed simple things like straws, but our waiter had disappeared into the abyss. After about 15 mins, I complained to the manager about the lack of service. The service improved a bit after that, with the manager pitching in briefly, but as the evening wore on, the service dissipated once again. If service is this inattentive/ inept on a slow Monday night, I hate to experience dining here on a busy weekend. Not surprising, the food took quite a while to arrive as well. When it did, it was marginal in taste... not bad, but uninteresting... "blah" comes to mind. I ordered the shrimp tacos, which I have enjoyed at other Mexican restaurants in the area. I was surprised and disappointed when the tacos arrived with just [empty] tortillas w/ some grilled shrimp dropped inside. There was a very small container of cole slaw (maybe two tablespoons) on the plate, and a small bowl of white rice ... that's it. I asked the waiter for more cole slaw, since the amount given to me barely filled ONE taco (there were three tacos in the order). He said 'okay', then disappeared into the abyss again. After waiting almost 10 mins, I ended up eating my shrimp tacos with just the white rice. My friends had similar impressions of food they had ordered ('not that great') so I think it's fairly safe to assume most will not return... at least not to this location. read more

I am suspicious of Alicia's one star review. There are many lower quality Mexican restaurants in the area, but Mexico is not one of them. This is our favorite Mexican place on the south side, better then Rico's and on par with Plaza Azteca. Their fresh guacamole and mole poblano are both consistently very good. The atmosphere at Plaza Azteca is a bit nicer - I would rather bring my unruly toddler here. read more

I have always loved Mexico-one of my favorite restaurants. However, this one has been a big disappointment last two times we ate here. Apparently queso is rationed -there is a dire shortage similar to that of other highly prized ingredients such as truffle oil and Kobe beef. I might have spotted a drop of the elusive substance on the edge of my plate but it sure wasn't "poured over my chori pollo". If I come again I will bring my own cheese. read more
