I was visiting family and had to go back in time and visit Mexico Steak House. I first walked in here and had lunch back in 1974. I became a regular after that day. The carne asada al carbon was my go to every time. It was the best skirt steak consistently every order. I remember the owners well as they were very personable and inviting. I remember a little girl going back and forth from the kitchen area helping as she was the daughter of this fine couple. Many years go by and I had been living in many places around the globe while playing music.. I came back years later and the little girl was grown up and running the restaurant that her parents had started. I told her how I remembered her and have been a customer for many years. I remember a full order of carne asada plate lunch/dinner with 2 strips of the tasty outer skirt steak was $3.50 back in the 70's. Nice going back to a place from decades ago.. Steaks are excellent, Milanesa is a full size order and cooked perfectly. The meats are well seasoned, moist, and tender. Enchiladas de Mole are good, chilaquiles are like how my mom made them "Migas", they just a little overboard on the cheese sometimes. Their Guacamole is excellent, as well as their chips. I came here with my boyfriend and my parents on Saturday evening around 6 pm. It was our first time at this neighborhood joint and we were greeted by our friendly server Blanca. This place is a family owned establishment and their pride shines through. There were two other tables when we walked in. The dining area itself is not "fancy" at all, it is comparable to what other BP Mexican joints look like (think Taqueria San Jose, etc). I was surprised at how large this place was, though, on the inside. Plenty of seating. When we sat down, we were immediately brought two baskets of housemade chips for 4 people, on the house, with housemade red salsa and salsa verde. I like the chips, they seem less greasy than other places, and the two salsas are tasty with a small kick - my favorite was the red! We ordered 2 large horchata drinks and they were very tasty. Soup came on the house- a vegetable and noodle soup in small bowls, pretty tasty but I tasted some dishwasher residue in my bowl??? When we ordered, they asked us how we liked our meats to be cooked- I told them medium anticipating many places to overcook the meat, but theirs came out perfectly. Plus, steak is supposed to be eaten charred in Mexico (well done), so I wanted to gauge how they would actually cook it when I told them medium instead. Every plate came with rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, and tortillas. We ordered the: $16.75 carne a la tampequena (skirt steak topped with cheese, avocado on the side This dish was tasty, but the portion of steak was significantly smaller than the carne asada- hence the slight price difference? My bf ate this one and said the carne asada was the best meat he had ever had. $13.75 bistec ranchero (rolled steak in ranchero sauce) My mom had this dish, and it was a MASSIVE piece of pounded steak in a tomato and onion based savory sauce. The cut of beef used is not as tender like the skirt steak, but it was still extremely flavorful and tender due to the pounding. The ranchero sauce was so good- I stole a couple spoonfuls of it alone! $18.75 Carne asada Oh man. GET THIS when you come, and don't look back. Two giant pieces of delicious steak, marinated in the secret combination of citrus juice and spices. The flavor profile on this is delightful. My dad smashed this dish. $16.75 Combo Skirt Steak and Chile Relleno (stuffed bell pepper with cheese) I got this dish, and honestly, it was the most disappointing dish. The skirt steak piece was not very large, but the Chile relleno was massive- probably a more cost effective move on the restaurant's part. The Chile relleno did have a lot of cheese in it, though. The skirt steak was tasty like the other few dishes. For dessert, we split an order of fried ice cream and an order of flan. The flan here has a cheesecake instead of eggy consistency, which I enjoyed-- however, it was definitely not your typical flan. we also got the fried ice cream which came in a beautiful massive plate- it was rolled in corn flakes and adorned with whipped cream and strawberry syrup. Our total came to $100 including tax and tip for 4 entrees, 2 large horchata, and 2 desserts. This restaurant is pricier than many other comparable BP establishments, but you really do pay for the quality of the food. We will be back again for the fried ice cream and CARNE ASADA. read more

I've been a loyal customer for over 25 years... probably many more than that. As of late, I have been dissatisfied with the food, mostly it's authenticity, and can't believe the skyrocketing prices. A dinner that would have cost me $45.00 a year ago, last week cost me over $80.00. That's ridiculous! My first time here and was very happy with food. I ordered the Pozole Sopa and it was very good. Plenty of meat and ingredients. I put a little salt in it and it was perfect. I also loved their chips! They were so tasty and crispy. I ordered the guacamole to go with the chips and it was a great combination. Totally recommend this place. read more

On March 4, 2022 I ordered Menudo from Mexico Steak House. Within 24 hours I had running and uncontrollable diarrhea for five days. The first two days I was also throwing up. Today March 10th is the first day that I am back to normal. My recommendation is that the owner monitors the preparation ,refrigeration and food handling. This place is awesome! A coworker and I came on a recommendation from a colleague, without knowing anything about the place. Man did we hit the jackpot. Every single thing we had was well done - in the homestyle way they would be good if you went to an aunt or grandma's house. Chips and two salsas (and more than plenty of each), fideo soup, carne tampiqueña, an enchilada, rice and beans... Even the tortillas were hot and fresh and awesome. My bf has literally been coming here all his life for Mexican food, and he quickly turned me onto this amazing place! The owners know him by name, every time we order take out or come to dine in, we are always greeted with a smile and kind words. When you dine in, you get free soup, salsa, and chips, and the soup is THE BEST SOUP EVER. I'm not even exaggerating. It's like this delicious veggie filled vat of goodness and omg when we order take out we usually need a quart of the soup!!! Their steak is amazing, but I love veggie Mexican dishes, and they make me the best veggie quesadillas I've had. Avacado tacos are also to die for. Hidden gem that makes everything taste even 10x better: the Ranchero sauce. It's a warm, salsa-like sauce that you can dip chips into or spread over your tacos or meal. So flavorful and delicious. I see a lot of reviews about dry chicken dishes and bland food. I personally feel they specialize in STEAK(Mexico steak house). Being a foodie like myself I know where to order what? For instance you do not go here and order a torta, burrito or anything like that...IMO and in my experiences. I dont like giving negative reviews but I feel that you should be warned. I ordered the pork taco salad and was charged for the steak. I asked about it and they did not correct the price. The pork was very tender and juicy by the way. You also get a cup of noodle soup with your order which was great! My co-worker ordered bistec al la mexicana and he got a dish with chunks of beef rather than skirt steak. Typically this dish has jalapeno cooked with it, this did not. I think this dish should be called chunky beef with onion stew because that is what it looked like. I am sorry to say this place will not be my first choice next time I'm in the area. read more

A lady should never age herself, but I have no shame in admitting that I have eaten here for over 30 years. It was my Mexican grandfather's favorite restaurant by his house and we would have Sunday brunch there at least twice a month through out the course of my childhood. I recently returned this past Father's Day, and everything was exactly how I remember. Excellent chips and guacamole. Delicious chorizo and eggs. And, my favorite, super flavorful carne asada. I stopped in here really quickly today after a really insanely long walk. I was super thirsty and needed an orchata(sp?) to quench that thirst. I also grabbed a steak taco, just to try a menu item. I gotta say, next time I am going to ask the waitress to not throw an extra dash of cinnamon to my orchata (I wish yelp had spell check for more food related words, even the non English ones.) because it was just way too much cinnamon. It was still tasty enough to drink and still refreshing, but it tasted more of cinnamon than anything else. My steak taco that i grabbed to go? Really tasty. Not hard or chewy like some places make them. I would come back seeing as its so close. I just wish that they hadn't put so much cinnamon on my beverage, and the prices weren't so high...It wasn't insane, and probably fair seeing as the steak seemed much higher quality than other places,..just not what one expects to pay for a taco, yanno? read more

Another Mexican place within walking distance of our new apartment - I'm beginning to get concerned that there are no junk Chinese places and yet at least 4 little Mexican joints. I stepped inside and could tell that this is a REAL restaurant and that means it comes with all of the fixin's and service and atmosphere. And the prices that come with it. So you enter and there's a nice setup with rows of tables and flatware and glasses and one of those jukebox things in the back with songs that nobody's going to pay money to hear while they eat their taco platter. I made my way down the rows to the counter where I placed a quick to-go order. I was planning on trying the namesake items from anywhere I visited today, but I wasn't in the mood to pick up an entire Carne Asada strip steak with all the trimmings. So I went for one asada steak taco. Highest price for the day of "one taco, please" out of all of the tacos I'd ordered. The quality though? I can say it was some of the best steakmeat found in the tacos I purchased. But is the higher price really worth it? Perhaps if I'm actually going to sit down and eat and I'll wind up with a real platter with the side items I don't know what to do with (that whole "Fat American Can't Figure Out Foreign Cuisines" nickname is something I've EARNED, people) and I also feel like treating my dinner guests to some jukebox tunes - I'm certainly going to pay the premium price. But if it's "dear god just get me a taco i don't friggin' care how good it is" time, I'll likely go elsewhere. After all, Mexico Steakhouse has a lot of competition in the neighborhood when it comes to Taco Time and I'm out wandering about. Stopped in here cuz my girlfriend and I was working out close by. The place is definitely a restaurant. We sat in and got a tray of chips and salsa. One green and one red. Good, but not great. I wished the green sauce was spicier...to me it only had mediocre flavor. I did not care much for the red sauce; tasted as if it came straight out of a bottle rather than being homemade. I ordered the chicken tostadas. There were three heaping tostadas on my plate with some rice and some beans. I was only able to finish 2 of the tostadas. Not much flavor to them so I poured the entire serving dish of the green salsa on them to give it some flavor. Eh, it was still just ok. And it was $8 for my dinner. However, I enjoyed my horchata. They put a pinch of cinnamon on top of the horchata which doesn't mix in that well with the drink. Regardless, after a good workout, it was a perfect thirst quencher at the time. Service was friendly. And there was no one in the restaurant with us on a Sunday evening, 7pm-ish? Interesting. Would I go back to this place again? Thought is was time for an update since '09. This place is still going strong in my list of places to go on the south side, and it stands up to any north side comparable Mexican restaurant. Keep in mind, this place is about those standbys that you'd expect, tacos, enchiladas, tostados and a really good skirt steak. Can't believe what has happened to their food here! Ordered a steak taco salad and was served pieces of beef like pot roast that they serve in their caldo de res chopped up (beef shank). Similar to Barbacoa and when I brought it to the serves attention she went back in the kitchen to show me carne molida and the same water logged beef shank cut up on the plate and said this is the only steak we carry. Mind you my husband was eating carne asada. She was polite and I told her I'll just feed my dogs cause complaining for a free meals isn't something I wouldn't do but it's unfortunate now cause I will never return. read more

The Mexico Steakhouse is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. This restaurant offers a large assortment of basic Mexican food in a utilitarian dining room and is BYO. It is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each lunch and diner is automatically started with a cup of soup and chips and tangy salsa verde and salsa rojo at no charge. I recommend the carne asada, either the dinner (full or half order) or in tacos. The skirt steak is always served in large portions with the meat being very juicy and flavorful. The dinner is accompanied by decent rice and frijoles and either flour or corn tortillas that are always hot and appetizing. Two other dishes that are highly recommended are the pork and beef stews. The meats in both are very tender and tasty and work very well with the other ingredients. The cost is very reasonable and the service is always efficient and friendly. My co workers & I were craving tacos for lunch & decided to give this place a try, after all they have great reviews on google & somewhat yelp right? Well I don't know who would actually consider this food authentic & delicious, for us it was the complete opposite. Aside from it being expensive it is not fresh food there serving, the rice & beans were bland & mushy tasted overcooked? The steak tacos were unseasoned & the toppings included lettuce, tomato & cheese. Instead of the traditional onions & cilantro. I really don't know why they wouldn't put effort in at least making the meat taste good since there best known for there steak. The salsas too were so flavorless & mediocre I was really disappointed mainly because we were all so hungry & we couldn't even finish our meals due to poor quality. This place is a-maz-ing! The food is so flavorful, with subtle Mexican influences in everything from the entrees to the atmosphere. I ordered the seasonal fish, and my boyfriend ordered the braised short ribs. Add the margaritas and chips/guacamole...heaven!
