Oh boy. What happened to this place? I ordered a carne asada torta and my boyfriend ordered a pozole for one. The good: the carne asada was cooked well. The food was ready for pickup when they said it would be. The bad: the $10 pozole serving is fit for a child (it's the serving size for one). Flavor-wise, it was disappointing and certainly not worth cost. The carne asada meat was under seasoned and bland. The price for the torta at $7 would have been reasonable, but for the fact that it, too, was fit for a child. I feel terrible even posting this review. I really like the ladies that own and run this establishment and I used to frequent this place when I lived within walking distance. But the prices have since skyrocketed, the portions have shrunk, and the seasoning leaves much to be desired. MS, I humbly ask that you please revisit your menu, prices, and recipes.. Mexico Steakhouse is a great place to enjoy decently authentic mexican food. One of my favorites is the Menudo (but I'm pretty adventurous). The carne asada is very good here as well, but I do prefer Panchos Pistolas' a little bit more. But you can't beat the family atmosphere at Mexico Steakhouse. It's nice and quiet and caters mostly to the neighborhood. Although totally random, they also serve "alphabet soup". I wouldn't say it's the most gourmet thing they could do, but it brings you back to childhood. It also is good for friends who are not big on Mexican (i.e. burgers, salads, pastas) or thinks that Pepes is quality mexican food (i.e. they'll fry the soft shell tortillas to make hard shells). read more

I want to preface this by saying that their beef stew is absolutely phenomenal, (expensive) but unfortunately the rest of the food is not. I have been giving this place a chance for over 2 months to see if it's just me. However, everytime I go back it's very disappointing. As a Mexican restaurant, one would expect the food to be flavorful and some kind of spice added to it, I even went ahead and told them specifically to add more flavor to my dishes, but they refused. I don't understand the reviews here--this is legitimately the worst food I've ever paid for--the nachos were individual chips with slices of American "cheese" half melted on and then half spoonfuls of sour cream and un-cooked, canned beans. Their food is consistently delicious and the service is attentive and friendly. I love Mexican food and have eaten at countless Mexican restaurants all over the city and elsewhere. Here is what else I love about Mexico Steakhouse: 1. Their mole sauce. One of the best I have had. 2. If you order a chicken-based dish, it is all white meat. 3. They often serve you a delicious cup of soup (gratuitous) when you arrive and are seated. 4. Their guacamole is delicious and made just right with fresh ingredients. I could go on, but I'll stop here. I have gone to other Mexican restaurants after discovering Mexico Steak House -- thinking I need a change -- and am almost always disappointed that I didn't stick with Mexico Steak House. I have been coming here more than ten years. Watch your receipt. They like to charge you more than the listed price. You can order the same exact order in the same week and pay 5 dollars more the next time. The pork tacos taste delicious. The beef tacos and chicken are good also. Food overall is very good. Great food! I typically go here when I want a relaxed/low key dinner! The menu has a nice selection (although the avocado tacos are my favorite) and you get a yummy cup of soup with every meal. They also have a really good iced tea that they serve with a slice of lime. Street parking is usually available on Archer and seating has always been readily available when I go in for dinner. One downside - they have no liquor license (or at least they didn't the last time I checked) so do not go in with the expectation of having a margarita. This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in Chicago and has been for going on 30 years. The quality of everything, especially the steak is excellent. I also love the Swiss chicken enchiladas with onions, green peppers, mild red sauce and covered in cheese. The mole sauce is excellent too. It's not 5 star Rick Bayless style Mexican, and it's not supposed to be, but I've been to Topolobampo and this is still my favorite. It's an excellent family owned restaurant. Another poster said that tacos would cost them $25. That is not true. You can get the steak burrito dinner or 3 steak taco dinner for under $10 with rice, beans, soup, and chips and salsa. You won't leave hungry. If you're not real hungry or on a budget, try the steak tostada grande. It's a large tostada with steak, beans, cheese, guacamole and sour cream. I think it's around $4.50 and one of my favorites. The guacamole and the nachos here are excellent too. And hi to Tina, Blanca, and everyone else at the Steakhouse. They've treated me like family for as long as I've been going there. My ONLY complaints about the Steakhouse is that they're not open later and don't offer delivery. Bob read more

Not very good, and I should know since I eat authentic Mexican at home often. I live right by here and not only is it pricey, but the tacos are far from worth it. The tacos here are pretty good. My favorite ones are the pork, they're served in a red sauce with a hint of spiciness. The rice can be a hit or miss at times - some days they're as delicious as god intended, other days some grains are slightly undercooked. Overall, it's a good Mexican restaurant. My only complaint is that the pricing can be a little steep if you're used to cheaper Mexican food. read more

We came here at least once a week when I was a kid, and I remember it was the highlight of my week! It has been my favorite restaurant for 20 years. The food is cheap, fresh, and delicious. The family that owns the restaurant is very warm and friendly. I'm a little sad that the decor has changed (they had a fire, so gone is the old jukebox and velvet paintings). Well I came here this past weekend and this "art" is hanging so low that my daughter got up from her chair and a piece of their "art" fell off of the wall and hit her head and back and fell to the ground. I came here on my B-day because I've heard lots of good things. Well I was sad to find out that, to mine and my wife's standards it was just ok. Parking was easy, maybe because it was a Monday but no complaints there. Restaurant is clean and casual. Service was kind of slow due to the fact that there was one busboy and server who also took phone orders. Other then that server was friendly and was efficient. They brought out a basket of homemade chips and soup which was oily. Both me and my wife ordered carne asada. I was very pleased that the steak was top grade arrachera. Too bad they don't bother to season it. I tried to add some flavor with the salsa but that too had no flavor. The rice AND the beans were also flavorless. The beans actually tasted like it came from a can. I'll GLADLY pay $15, hell even $20 for good food but this, never again. I've been to many Mexican restaurants owned by Mexicans and it surprises me how many of them take short cuts. This place could benefit with putting some salt and lime on their steak, a little salt or chicken stock in their rice and refrying their own beans with chicharron, onion or both. Also they should get creative with the salsa. Put some cilantro, chiles de arbol, something to give it character and to appease latinos and people who love authentic Mexican food too.
