He was patient with me when I had to reschedule installation 3 times due to the wrong item being delivered to me. Although the 4th delivery was still incorrect (missing brickmould, 1/2 in gap between threshold and weatherstripping) Mark rehung the door and fabricated a beautiful brickmould for a an extremely fair fee, saving me the anguish of having to rectify the problem with the door dealer. We've used MG Door for two different jobs now: the installation of three interior solid oak doors and an interior steel garage door two years ago, and this year, the tear out and installation of a complete door frame with exterior door and screen door in the back, and a replacement screen door in the front as well. We originally called MG Door based on the recommendation of the salesperson at the hardware store after purchasing prehung oak doors there. (***I don't recommend doing it this way. Keep reading!***) When Mark arrived, he looked at the location and condition of our current doors, and suggested that we could save money and disruption to our home (think: not needing to repaint) if we cancelled the prehung door order and went with just the doors. He helped us revise our order so we'd make sure and get just the right thing. When they arrived at the hardware store, he picked them up, brought them to us, and installed them. He is so talented that he was able to make the doors work within our current frames and new hardware. They look awesome. When we wanted to replace our exterior door in back, we skipped the hardware store (well, we went to look for basic ideas) and we called Mark first (***This way worked MUCH BETTER***). He came out and measured, made some suggestions regarding materials so that we would have doors that were rugged enough to stand up to the sun and cold weather and also were well insulated. We had some pictures of doors we liked from the hardware store, and he found the same doors in a catalog he had in his truck so that we could talk about the options and be sure we got what we wanted. He also brought in some paint chips so we would know exactly what color we wanted. We appreciated his reasonable and sound advice. Mark doesn't sell doors, but he has a company he likes to work with, and he gave them a call, placed the order for us, and picked up the doors when they arrived. We just paid for the doors over the phone when they came in. It was great not having to worry about making sure we were measuring everything correctly. He took care of that for us. The doors were installed in a day, and he worked really hard to get everything right. We'd definitely hire Mark again. Highly recommended! read more

Mark is honest and trustworthy contractor. I am giving Mark 5 stars even though he walked away from the job. He was honest when he quoted the work clearly stating that from what he saw it could potentially be a can of worms due to some irregular framing. He wouldn't know until he started the job. I was not surprised when Mark gave me a call and explained to me we had an issue. We have an older home that was converted from a 2 flat to a SFH so we keep finding handyman specials. Mark could of completed the work and "made it work." However, I would of had the same issues I was trying to fix and my wallet would of been lighter. Personally, I appreciate Mark being honest and upfront. He said I needed a bigger outfit that could handle reframing my entry way doors. Mark arrived at my house a couple weeks ago and our entire interaction lasted less than a minute. I'd mentioned on the phone that he might want to see what my door situation was, and that's why I wanted him to come out and assess. Mark's only question was to ask if I wanted to replace the storm door or the entry door When I said both, he started shaking his head no. Without coming inside to look at the framing of the door, and without asking any further questions, he simply declared the job too big for him to perform on his own---as he [erroneously] believed that what I needed was more than a standard size, single door. Maybe using a tape measure and a closer look could have helped, but Mark had no time for that. The job was too big to do alone, and that was that, case closed. No recommendation of another contractor he knew, no second look, no listening to what I had to say. Mark did have one piece of advice for me, which he uttered almost over his shoulder as he headed back to his truck: "Don't be mad." So I hired another contractor -- and scheduling that took a couple weeks this time of year. It took about 30 minutes of work this morning for the guy and I to figure out the nuances of custom trim the previous owner created---but in the end it's just a task of replacing a regular-sized door and redoing some moulding. Obviously, I have not taken Mark's advice on anger management to heart, as he really saw no problem blowing me off after I expended time off from work to meet him. Maybe the people he prefers working with don't need to arrange time off work. Maybe he likes just to be able to bad-mouth the big-box store, but at the slightest sign of complication, Mark rudely bolted, and wasted my time. First off let me tell you that finding people to install Screen or Storm Doors is not easy. Install doors... yes but apparently Screen Doors are more tedious and difficult so while you can find a ton of "Door" installers, finding Screen or Storm Door installers are much more difficult. Now I used to be a handy guy in my younger days so the thought of popping over to the Home Depot, picking up a $100 Screen Door and installing it in 10 minutes crossed my mind. When Mark gave me the price, to be honest I thought it was a bid on the high side. Mark was polite, professional and answered all my questions. Marks a very likeable guy and seems about as honest as they come. The price was the sticking point so I called around or at least I tried to. If I had to guess there are about ten times the number of people or companies that install Doors but not Screen Doors. Well I found a few and they were even higher than Mark and did not have the stellar reputation that Mark had. I called back Mark and within 20 minutes I had everything ordered and a date to install a few weeks away. Mark showed up on time, installed both doors in a matter of a few hours and the doors could not look or perform better. After seeing how much work was involved for someone who did this every day, my delusions of doing it myself (and BTW try finding a $100 Screen Door these days that is not garbage LOL) proved that I had made the correct choice in hiring MG Door to do the install. As a side note. Apparently Mark spends the winter months pre-cutting parts and trim to fit the most common doors. I mention this as had he not done this he would have spent additional hours on sight doing this tedious cutting. This saves on the time taken to install your doors. After installation was complete, everything was cleaned up and Mark took the time to explain how everything worked. It's been a month and everything still looks great and the most important part, my wife is happy and happy wife means happy husband :) Thanks Mark! read more

My three star rating is the product of both a great experience and a bad experience with Mark at MG Door Installation and below I will include both good/bad for your review. About a week ago, we used mark to replace a broken bedroom door in a single family house we are renting in lakeview. Although his quote was not the lowest, we still used him because he seemed knowledgable, polite and able to complete the repair in our ideal timeframe - which he did! We have no complaints about this experience at all because he did a great job and that's why he decided to call him back the following week with another job at the condo we own by Loyola university. We were looking to put in an interior door by the office area which had been removed prior to us owning it and we were set to meet for an estimate this morning. I had explained to him that parking is difficult in that area at the time I set the appointment so I do not feel like I wasn't up front about that detail. The morning of our appointment he called an hour and a half before our set time and asked if we could meet earlier which I agreed to but it takes about 20-30 minutes for me to drive there. On my drive over with a sick toddler in tow, he calls and says I will have to find someone else to do the job because parking is too difficult?! To say I was upset would an understatement. I told him that finding parking is challenge for everyone in the city and I thought it was very unprofessional for him to call me while I'm driving over ahead of schedule to meet him. He told me he could wait there for me to arrive but I told him it was fine I could find someone else for the job. Why would I still want waste more time meeting with someone who may or may not want the job or show up because parking is too hard? I'm not giving a lower rating because mark did a great job on the door he did hang for us but I cannot ignore how unprofessional it is to back out of an appointment simply because you don't want to look for parking?! We had another job ourselves (three total) and someone we knew who would need to replace 3-4 doors as well but I can't in good faith provide a reference for someone who I do not feel like is reliable working in the city unless parking is provided. read more

We had a great experience with Mark. He replaced a 50 year old wooden side entrance door to our garage. The old door swelled and was extremely difficult to open with any humidity issues. The new door looked great and worked perfectly, Two months after the replacement we had an attempted break-in to our house. The idiots whom tried to get in did an unbelievable amount of damage to the door but could not breach!
