I needed a new custom-sized storm door and was trying to support small businesses while avoiding the big box stores. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It took a couple of calls to get someone out to measure.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The fellow was nice enough, but the language barrier didn't allow me to get any questions answered.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The measurements were never shared with me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was sent a confusing PDF brochure for Larson doors to browse that had no prices listed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I had to call and email a few times to finally reach my salesperson again and get a quote.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I picked a couple of doors to compare only to be told one isn't available in my size. The quote finally came through as one generic line item that was more than double what the big boxes had quoted me. It didn't even split out the door and the installation charges. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At any step of the way they could have simply told me my order wouldn't meet their minimum threshold and saved all of us a lot of time and effort.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ended up giving my money to a big box store. Ironically, I've been blown away by the customer service from the box box employees/contractors every step of the way - everyone I've spoken to or has come out has been extremely responsive and friendly. I first encountered ATW 14 years ago when my warehouse was broken in. Iver came out, field measured, and installed a new hollow metal door and frame with hardware in less than a week. That's tremendous service! You remember excellent service like that. Fast forward to today, I had a need to replace three sliding doors in my home. I called ATW again and reconnected with Iver. To be clear I did not hire American Thermal Windows to do my windows. My review is just about the pre sales process. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I found the sales rep not very knowledgeable about the product she was selling.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The quoting process was long and drawn out and when I finally got a quote it was a few sentences written on a notepad to quote out a 50k job. It was highly unprofessional looking. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I also felt like when I buy a car the rep you deal with has no authority to answer or agree to anything and they have to run to the sales manager in the back to approve anything which is very frustrating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]She also could not answer what you would imagine are simple questions for someone in the window industry. I asked what there the energy efficiency specs of the windows being quoted to me and the answer I got was "They are very good they are made for Chicago weather" Saying I don't know would have been much better answer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I also asked about what are the efficiency qualifications for the energy efficiency tax credit. Again she didn't know the answer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I have installed solar and trust me all they want to talk about is the tax credits available. Even if the quoted windows didn't qualify it would have shown the rep was educated about the industry they sell in. Google and the other companies who quoted ultimately gave me the answer. I don't think it was until I got quotes from other window companies that I realized how poor the pre sales process was with this company. Ultimately I went with another company and have been very happy that I did. The old backdoor was, kind of, a joke, because it didn't really close and cold wind could come in easily and one could clearly see that was extremely outdated. I contacted "American Thermal Window Products" and wanted to get this house project rolling before 2022 came. Unfortunately, due to labor and material shortages, I was informed the door installation would be at least a three-month wait. Hey, that wasn't the company's fault and I always received a good service and prompt responses from the office. Nick was assigned to get in touch with me for an estimate. Nick and everyone else in the office were very friendly. Nick explained everything about the estimate (free in-person estimate) and answered any questions we had. He emphasized that everyone involving with the installation process worked for the company. With that being said, there would be no third party contractors hired off the street! I understood the virtue of using the company employees. I have been part of the gig economy for some times. I wouldn't say the contractors wouldn't do a job, yet there could be a lack of accountability on their part of work certainly. In late February 2022, I received a voicemail from Linda and immediately called the office. She scheduled the installation date for me and provided an arrival window. The crew came in prepared within the window and was ready to work! The installation was rather quick. The cleaning was thorough. Everything was painless. The crew leader told us that adjustment could be made if there was a need. That door...let me tell ya...was a godsent. It helped conserve the heat. It did have an energy-star icon, for those who are into the energy-efficient appliances. It is also esthetically pleasing. Overall, I'm very satisfied. I'm going to inspect the windows for the rest of the house and to see if I can get "American Thermal Window Products" involved again. read more

I found American Thermal Windows via a Google search and decided to call them primarily because of the positive online reviews. My condo association is looking to have a new custom exterior door installed so I called to schedule an appointment with one of their salesman. I spoke to the receptionist for about five minutes on 3/24 & made an appointment for 11:30am Tuesday (3/29). The young lady I spoke with said the gentleman (named RJ) would arrive between 11-11:30am. The time came and went... no one ever called and RJ didn't show up. My cell phone call log and the building security cameras surrounding the entire property support this fact. I didn't even bothering calling American Thermal to complain either because I knew I wouldn't hire them regardless of the excuse they provided. If their employees can't even be trusted to keep an initial sales appointment then heaven only knows what might happen once they have our money. Luckily, I work from home so their employee not showing up for the appointment wasn't too much of an inconvenience. But if I'd had to take off from work to meet with him I would've been pissed. A business being careless with a (potential) customer's time isn't a good look. It pretty much tells me everything I need to know about the company's business practices. I'm glad we dogged that bullet. Beware! Update - Apparently ATW claims that my appointment was for April 5th... I took notes during the call detailing the company name, appointment date, time and name of the salesman I'd be meeting with. The receptionist definitely stated the appointment was for March 29th. I wouldn't have made an appointment for April 5th because I'll be at a conference next week. Perhaps the receptionist thought she said April 5th instead of March 29th? Who knows? Going forward perhaps AWI should consider immediately following up via text or email with customers to confirm appointment details like many other businesses do. That would help ensure that situations like this one don't occur again. read more

Quote for window and door replacement was provided to us. An appointment was set up for an employee to come out to the condominium and for the contract to be signed. When he arrived at my daughter's condominium, he increased the price by $1000 and blamed it on them not previously measuring correctly. He admitted it was not something he wanted to do, but his boss said to just keep the appointment and go forward with it. Really happy w our door and installation. Let me say that it was not cheap, but it was in keeping w the few other bids we were able to get. It wasn't that sexy of a job, and no one was beating down our doors to get this job. But they showed up to bid, followed thru, hit their timeline and did a great job installing the door, trimming it out, putting our security deadbolt in and reattaching the alarm contacts. Awful experience. Installed the wrong hardware that was originally ordered on the work order then made it seem like it was our fault. Zero accountability for their work, they then had to re-order the door slab and upon installation the door does not close flush to the frame, there is a draft coming through near the top of the door. Customer service is a joke, most of the people with the exception of one that I know of are extremely rude. I would not recommend ATWP, take your business elsewhere. read more

Terrible response on a warranty issue on their own window, months of waiting for a quote. Since it was only one window out of about 100 that they had originally installed, they didn't seem to care. UPDATED 11/21/19: After having my windows replaced by this company in November 2017, I discovered further leaking in February 2019. After multiple visits by the window company and reinstall of the product in July 2019, they washed their hands of the issue and wished me well (SEE REPLY ON PREVIOUS UPDATE). ATW was vehement that the issue was "pre-existing" and that their new product was only leaking because of an unknown issue with the balcony. After several months of trying to find a professional to come and assess the situation, a paving and concrete professional visited my home on 11/20/19 and discovered holes within the window frame that allowed water to seep in. I poured water onto the balcony and the water instantly poured into the hole. This is a massive oversight by the installation crew and the FOUR other representatives that visited my home earlier this year. It also proves without a shadow of a doubt that the new windows were, in fact, the issue. Photos that were submitted to ATW back in February 2019 show the holes and yet none of the individuals who returned noticed them. The paving professionals who visited yesterday took photos and sealed the holes with an expanding compound that blocks water from coming in. The paving company has also agreed to speak on their findings if necessary. The way that I have been treated by this company is outrageous. Belittling my claims and "wishing me well" even though the product and service I received were shoddy. Shame on American Thermal Windows. read more

My wife and I walked into the showroom on a busy Saturday with our 2 young children. We did not have an appointment but Nick who was a salesman and happened to be there took the time to explain the process of getting a new door. Nick was patient and thorough with us. Nick showed us our options and later came to our house to finalize the order once we decided to go with American Thermal. Nick was upfront, honest and always professional. Every question we had was answered and we were comfortable with our decision in ordering the door with Nick and American Thermal. Several weeks later we received a call that the door was ready to be installed and made an appointment which worked for us. The installers were extremely professional and proficient. Door was installed perfectly and I was extremely happy. Installers did an amazing job removing all the old materials and cleaning up after themselves. I could not be any happier with the entire process from the moment we walked into the showroom till the door was fully installed. Attached are pictures of the install. Overpriced doors that you wait a LONG time for and their installation is even worse. Waited 3 months for these doors and one door leaks while the other door doesn't latch at all. Three weeks after the initial install, a service tech, who was over 3 hours late, show-up with attitude and ends up leaving, and didn't fix either door, so just called my credit card company and am fighting the total charge for the doors. Now that they don't have their money any more, I guess we'll see how long it takes them to come back out and fix these properly. Tried to engage my original salesperson, who indicated, prior to me purchasing the doors, that he follows-up to ensure everything is completed correctly. Well, John Abbamonte never returned my call. I visited American Thermal Window & Door's showroom on November 14th for purchase of a door & was told by owner Ivor that a salesperson would have to come to my home because it is a custom-made door. An appointment was set up with salesperson Tom for November 19 . The sales rep measured & quoted a price around $2000. I called the sales rep back to sign the contract on November 30, but the actual appointment to sign the contract could not be kept until December 17. The sale was made & I asked the sales rep about the down payment & the delivery & the installation of the door. Regarding the down payment, he stated that normally they must take 1/3 down but when I counter offered with $200., he "accepted". We then discussed an approximate time for delivery & installation, he stated "normally it takes seven to ten weeks, but if you need it sooner, we can try!!" I asked if it can be completed in four weeks, again sales rep response was "we can try". I asked him to list such on the contract & he "agreed". As part of the purchase of the door they were also going to install new locks & I would need to surrender a key to him for the locks to match with the rest of the home's locks. I surrendered a key to him. In addition to the contract the sales rep asked me to sign a three-day cancellation agreement that would expire on December 21. Prior to leaving the sales rep mentioned that another gentleman-Dan-from his company would be coming out in about seven to ten days to measure for the door again. The seven to ten days would be at least four days after my option to cancel. I did not notice immediately that the changes I asked to be made on the contract were ever made & called the sales rep on December 18. In the afternoon of December 19, the sales rep never returned my call, so I stopped by the Milwaukee avenue showroom & spoke to a young lady by the name of Judy. She empathized with me for the sales rep's errors & put me on a call with the owner Ivor. Ivor stated he was unaware of the sales rep conversation but if I choose I can either cancel the order immediately or call back on Monday, December 21 & identify the status of the order. I explained to Ivor that I did not want to cancel the order, I just want what was promised to me. Later that evening, the sales rep-Tom called me up to identify the problem, again I explained to him that I just want what we agreed to on Thursday, December 17th. The sales rep agreed for us to meet on Monday, December 21, so the changes to the contract that we agreed to, can be made. First thing Monday morning, December 21st, the sales rep called me up to tell me that between him & the owner, they took upon themselves to cancel the contract because they felt I had become too challenging for his company. I asked him for a more through explanation & he began making false statements & elevating his voice. I terminated the call & called customer service & spoke to somebody named Mike. Mike told me there was little he could do as this was directed by Ivor to proceed with the cancellation & he could not cross the owner. As for the down payment, they independently processed a credit prior to speaking to me & as far as my key, they decided with a technician of there's = Kevin to deliver my key on his schedule. Kevin showed up around 2:30pm on December twenty first. I asked to inspect the key & he refused until I sign his release form. I ended up calling the local police and that was when Keven relinquished the key. All I wanted from these folks is an acknowledgement that the sales rep miss spoke & they could not back up his words, instead they came across that I was the problem maker. read more

My husband and I have a house full of windows that need replacement. Of immediate concern, were the two windows on the addition in the back of our home. Tom, the sales rep that came out to give us the quote was friendly, polite, knowledgeable, and assured us of the quality of the windows from Great Lakes. We paid the deposit and were excited to have them installed. We also proudly displayed our "Coming soon, American Thermal Windows" lawn sign in front our home. I actually know the owner and his family of this company. I went to grade school with his son, his daughter babysat my sisters and I, and he's a former cop and knew my father (a retired cop). In fact, my childhood home has Great Lakes windows installed by American Thermal as well. When my parents had their bay window installed it cracked after installation and had to be replaced. They also experienced problems with leaking. Given this was 20 years ago, my husband and I still felt American Thermal was the best company to go with and started with just 2 windows to see how things went. Installation was scheduled for today. Upon arrival, we learn that out of the 2 windows we ordered, one of them has a noticeable crack along the length of it. Leaving no choice but to install a cracked window, we were told a new window will arrive in "a week or two". Yes, we understand that the replacement will be quick and painless, nonetheless we spent a decent amount of money and were disappointed that we had to wait yet another 2 weeks for a replacement. We should have been notified of the damaged window properly, given options of how we would like to proceed, and offered some sort of apology for the inconvenience. We were told it was the manufacturer's fault. As a customer, it doesn't much matter to us whose fault it is and the blame game doesn't help the situation. Only after voicing our complaints and calling our sales rep, Tom, we were offered a $50 discount. After a year of extensive remodeling, we are well aware that things can go wrong. However, as a customer you put your trust into a company to give you the best experience possible. And if there is a problem, you expect stellar customer service. Why? Because you want to maintain the reputation of your company, your products, and your work, avoiding reviews such as this one. I would have LOVED to join the rest of the 4 & 5 star reviews for this company, but given our experience, it missed the mark. It will be difficult to consider American Thermal for future projects (which we certainly have) or be able to recommend them based on this experience as well. Update: We have since replaced the majority of our other windows in the house with another company and gave them 5 stars. From customer service to price to delivery time to installation day - everything was perfect. From order day to installation day - it only took 3 weeks! The installers even helped one of our neighbors with a window issue he had. And so the saying goes...you only get one chance to make a first impression. read more

We replaced all our windows with American Thermal 5 years ago and they have been great. They are all season windows which keeps the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Love the new windows! Such a difference! We had 16 windows replaced. I wasn't sure if I wanted to have all the windows done at once or just a few to see how it goes but I'm glad we went for it. Our sales rep Nick was thorough, knowledgeable and made recommendations on our responses to our questions. He made everyone feel comfortable and no pressure. We chose the Great Lakes EcoSmart series which is triple pane glass (you can totally tell the difference between the old windows and these fabulous replacements) and has extra features in structure and insulation. I wanted windows that would last and that I wouldn't have trouble with in the future. They come with a warrantee which is backed up by the American Thermal warrantee so I am at ease. The windows all have locks and screens, I guess that's standard. The process included taking care of the permit and scheduling the inspection. They look great too! I was worried about having to purchase new window treatments but I didn't need to. The installers kept everything in tact. They were friendly, did a great job and cleaned up perfectly. True talented professionals - Sebastian and Majec (sorry if spelled incorrectly). It really wasn't a disruption, they were fast and efficient. Overall experience was excellent. In August of 2018 I purchased security doors for my 2 flat. Everything went well. About last Christmas the door on the 2nd floor had an issue and I called American Thermal Window to come out and look at it and fix it. They said they would get back to me but when I didn't hear anything for a few weeks, I called back. They said they would call me. Finally they did call me back and I scheduled an appointment to have them come fix the door. I was told it would be $110 and payment was due at time of repair, which is totally reasonable, so I agreed. The woman on the phone repeated several times that payment was due on repair. The repair guy came out January 23rd to fix the door. The repair guy told my husband that his paperwork indicated we had all the materials to fix the door, but I had already told the woman that set up the appointment that I did not have the screws for the door and they would need to supply them when they came for the repair. The repair guy went to his vehicle to look for screws and fell in the street and hurt his ankle. He came back up to the 2nd floor door and got his equipment and left. No repair was done that day. About a week and half later, the company called again to set up an appointment for February 14th. The day before they were supposed to come out to fix the door, they called me and said that payment for the repair was due prior to them doing the repair, a new policy they said. I explained that I wasn't paying for a repair prior to them actually doing the repair but would of course pay on the day that the repair was made. They wouldn't come out to repair the door they sold me unless I paid them in advance. The appointment was cancelled. I am not ever going to buy another product from a company that doesn't support the products that they sell and will find someone else to fix the door. They would crack in the winter and I would have to pay $60 for someone to bring the replacement by because I didn't want to leave a window in my house open in the middle of winter. The people who I recently paid to replace your inferior product said the windows you used are a very thin and cheap glass. Many of the windows that I have purchased from you have leaks and you can see the result on the inside of the glass. Your statement contains many errors so I will clear those up. American Thermal Window played around with me for 6 weeks starting in the beginning of February. I have the phone records to back all of this up. Who is going to live with a broken window in their house this long in the middle of winter? The only reason I did live with it is that every time I called they said they were taking care of it. I definitely hung up on the person when they told me I'd be "better off buying a whole new window" after I repeated her statement as a question. After 6 weeks of games, I needed to move on and find another solution as your company wasted a lot of my time. When I was called as a result of American Thermal Window seeing the initial review, I was told some of the windows are under warranty. I asked for the person to tell me exactly which ones are under warranty. I am still waiting on you to tell me which exact windows are still under warranty. Your response 6 months later is a further indicator of American Thermal Windows lack of diligence and commitment to their customers. There are enough similar reviews here to back up my claims of the quality of the materials you use and service issues. If you would have been transparent during pre-sales about how your "Business System" works, I would have gone with a competitor that truly stands behind what they sell.
