I was very impressed by their knowledge base, ability to discuss the differences in approaches, and solid argument for why they recommend the rebar cages that they make. They were willing to answer all my questions about protecting the battery, the electronics, and preserving the clearance issues as much as possible. While their price was more than others, their product and work are much different. They take pride in their work and the finished product. I can't say enough about my experience with this business. I got my catalytic stolen (for the 4th time). I was tearful, anxious, overwhelmed- I needed my car repaired asap!! Liz, the business owner, took her time explaining the entire process to me and educated me on things about my car I didn't even know about. She is very knowledgeable. This place caught my side online and was very surprised with the great work and reasonable pricing. I had bought these mbrp catback exhaust system and was looking for a shop to install it. After going through several places i found MGR Muffler and i am very happy with it. They did a great job installing it. What made it better was that the mbrp cat back exhaust produces a drone noise that was awful and MGR helped me take care of that too. Background: Bought a hybrid Kia 18 months ago. Searched for supplier of a protective plate for the catalytic converter. Neither the original car manufacturer nor, any aftermarket vendors could provide/sell us an anti-theft shield. This was incredibly discouraging. In fact, in the past 18 months, we avoided driving and staying in metro areas like San Francisco, or at other events where parking our hybrid car could attract opportunistic thieves. Then by luck on a Google search, I discovered MGR Muffler & Auto Repair shop which installed "custom made Rebar cages for catalytical converters". Eagerly I contacted the owner, Jose, who described their service in a phonecall conversation. Two days later I drove 2 hours to his Richmond garage, and I was _not _disappointed _at _all! Day of Service Appointment: 1) I got a start of day appointment at 9/.9:15am as Jose recommended. He also suggested that if this location was busy, he'd squeeze me into the schedule at his 2nd location. 2) The service technicians put my Kia on a lift to assess the underside location & accessibility of car's catalytic converter, in order to determine the scope of work. 3) The estimate and final price came to $471 which was marginally more than the pre-made aftermarket anti-theft plates sold for example for a Toyota Prius. So I was satisfied. (Note: My insurance deductible alone would be $1000 out of pocket, if I was replacing a stolen catalytic converter. So, this was a fair price from my standpoint.) 4) The entire welding job for the Rebar cage took about 2 hours which was much faster than the original estimate of 3-4hours. That was a pleasant surprise. (Note: the service technician explained the technical effort to custom make the cage which was instructive). 5) While waiting for the work to be completed, Jose recommended a terrific coffee shop, Catahoula, just 2 minutes away on foot to hang out and do work. This from beginning to end was a very good customer service experience. I feel relieved that my hybrid car is finally protected for the first time in 18months. Frankly glad to have made the 2 hour drive to Richmond. Easily recommend MGR Muffler & Auto Repair without hesitation. PS. These guys definitely did not want my business. Went to the shop asking about a muffler. The lady was nice.. but the guy was rude and did not want to be bothered. Sometimes a business will give you a price that is so high they are really telling you to leave and don't bother them. That is exactly what happened to me. Some jerk tried to steal the catalytic converter from my 2005 Prius! Fortunately, they were not successful. I took this as a wake-up call, since this is the new crime trend in Oakland. I knew I needed a cage welded over my cat ASAP. After calling several East Bay muffler shops and getting nowhere, I found MGR and spoke with Jose. He was so helpful and friendly. He assured me that his staff could take care of my car that morning. The shop is conveniently located on San Pablo Ave in Richmond, right off the freeway. Parts and labor came to $280. Not bad, considering a new cat and exhaust system can run up to $3000. My car was ready within about 2 hours. I recommend having this done, especially if you own a Prius, as they're being targeted. And MGR is just the place to do it! One last bonus: As a woman, I often encounter condescending attitudes from mechanics and usually prepare for this when taking my car in for work. Jose was very respectful and explained the procedure in layman's terms. After the work was done, he showed me the exhaust system and talked about the cat's function within it, so I learned a little something from the experience, too. read more

Needed a Muffler Pipe bent so i could fit an exhaust tip and have it centered to the Bumper notch to look good and not touch the plastic. Pipe probably needed to to move approx 1 inch down and to the left. Dude tells me he needs to cut off the pipe and re-weld it on and something like $250 WHAT !!!!!, Uhm no, Apply heat, Bend, Bob's your Uncle. Forget this place, if they can try a move like this on the most basic of Services then expect Problems *Update - Owner messaged me to say i had wrong shop and did not remember me. Partially correct. I have the right shop, however my service was on Oct 24, 2020 (took a pic of my tips after the work at another shop same day so i have a time stamp) so my review is a year overdue. My car was all of a sudden losing power (on the highway!) where it would only go about 40-50 mph. Went to my long-time mechanic who I trust and he figured it was a catalytic converter issue, but with 3 built into my Subaru, figured it was a $3000 job given the current cost for parts (if they were even available). So I sought out other options and found Jose and MGR through Yelp. He was amazing. Was able to see the next day after I originally spoke to him. With his support team, did a deep diagnostic dive to identify the source of the problem and what cat was causing the issue. Was able to find a great source for the part and had it fixed the next day at half the price I originally thought I'd have to pay. I was dreading a exhaust leak I was hearing from my KIA and decided to get a few quotes. First stop was a nationally known shop who wanted to charge me $1700 for an exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. On a whim I decided to call around to see what others would charge. During my search I ran into Liz who was kind enough to refer me to her husband Jose who took at my car. After Jose looked at my car he determined that he just weld the crack in my exhaust manifold rather go through the expense of replacing the catalytic converter. That saved me $1400!! Unfortunately It ended up being too loud inside the cabin (due to my poor research) and put the stocks back on. I took my 2014 Lexus is 350F to modify the exhaust so it can be louder, I spoke with Julian and ask for his opinion on what to install to get the sound I wanted. He gave me options and showed me the difference between pipe tips and what each one sounded like. I finally decided and went ahead and had him do the install. Through out the whole install I noticed Julian was very detailed about his work and how precise he was especially on measurement fitting, this was a big +!..... He was not rushing, he wanted everything done right! Rita and Julian worked great together to get the job done. I highly recommend this place for exhaust work for its quality in work and customer service. The job did cost me $780.00 but it was worth every penny. I am very pleased with the job and would recommend friends / yelpers to come here. If you are complaining about prices then go get a cheap work done !..Quality cost and you get what you pay for. Boy, I miss Mel's Muffler, which is what this shop used to be called until Julian took over. The previous guy had decent prices for decent work. Today I needed a repair; simple exhaust pipe welding in two places...he quoted me $200 labor, which I thought was very high. But he had me over a barrel, because I really did not want to drive around looking for another shop. So I agreed. Then he did the work. Took him just less that 30 minutes; start to finish. I mentioned that he had kind of over-charged me..all he did was smile. That was about $75 worth of welding...and $125 worth of gouge. So, just word to the wise; this place is no longer a good shop...look elsewhere for fair prices. read more
