If it wasn't for the shredded chicken in the tostones appetizer or the ham in the red bean soup I would almost say I turned vegetarian. Yes unfortunately this was the first time that I have had to leave Churrasco steak untouched. Abuelita's appears to be a more modern branding of the old Epicentro II Cafe at this location, where I last ate back in 2017. The interior may have been remodeled for the most part (they still have the Hialeah maquinitas in the back) but a lot of improvement is still needed. See, I was hungry for some good churrasco today. I looked for a new place and decided to give Abuelitas a try. As I mentioned, the place looks really updated and for a while - my appetizer course - I thought I found a new trendy spot in Hialeah. I ate a couple of delicious tostones cup appetizer. Take a toston (fried green plantain), shape it into a cup and fill it with shredded chicken and melted cheese, and you have the saving culinary grace for this restaurant. The plan was to sample this, take the rest home and enjoy my Churrasco. They became my main course since the steak tasted weird. It was a mixture of over greasy or almost rancid. Needless to say, the rest of the steak sat untouched. Even the fried sweet plantains (maduros) tasted greasy. The only other good dish was the red bean soup. I also did have a cortadito which was good. These are what eek out to two stars. The comments on some other reviews here - and my experience with service at the previous incarnation - on service attention? Sadly they still persist. The waitresses seemed busy chatting with other customers at the ventanita that no one noticed an untouched steak. The cortadito I did enjoy? Well when they finally came to clean my table and give me my bill one asked if I wanted coffee. I just pointed to the cortadito cup , and for the first time in awhile left barely a 15% tip. I really do wish them well, and that ownership continues the remodeling they did of the facade and interior with their service and food prep. read more

Food used to be good, well, the one thing I would get any way. It was the pan con bistec. Since the place was on my drive home I'd stop by every once in a while. Service was never that great but the convenience made It worth the annoyance. But one day, it's as if there was no manager present to keep the subpar servers in line. They refused to acknowledge a customer standing to make an order. After making eye contact with them various times, they continued their conversation. After a while I left. We visited Mi abuelita today and went to their Ventanita. We Ordered a café con leche , a batido and some croquetas. The croquetas were ok , very typical but not amazing. The batido was great and the coffee was standard. The staff was a bit unwelcoming and seemed bothered when we arrived to place the order. Not sure if the restaurant was closing and they were in a rush but it was evident that we were interfering with something. We may return to try out the food because it looks great, hopefully the service we received today is a one off. read more

I have been frequenting this local establishment for several years now. It used to be called the Epicentro Cafe prior to a major redecoration and cleaning of the restaurant. They made a lot of good changes. The food is decent and satisfying but, not particularly noteworthy. The staff can be standoffish. Most of them do not speak English well and are not willing to try. I can usually find one employee who is willing to listen to my broken Spanish and take my order, which usually just consists of a Sandwich Cubano or a Pan Con Bistec. It's a fairly easy to understand order, even with an American accent. They advertise that phone orders are welcome. They are not. Out of the dozen times I've tried to call ahead, they've refused to take my order. They will claim that they can't understand English. Several times, I have had Spanish-speaking friends call them for me and then their response is that they would need to take a credit card for the phone order. When we offer a credit card number, they then say that no phone orders are allowed. I am disabled and it would make it so much more convenient to just pick-up preordered food than to have to wait in line to order and then stand in line to wait while my food is prepared. Please stop advertising that you accept phone orders, because you clearly do not. I come often and always tip well above 20%, sometimes I leave even 100%, hoping to make a good, lasting impression for better service. However, they never act as though they recognize me or are happy to see me. I keep coming back because the location and late hours are extremely convenient for me. My only other local late night option is McDonalds and that gets to be rather boring. One of the main reasons I started coming here is that they were open 24/7 prior to COVID. Their current hours are 5:00 AM to 12:00 AM. I recommend that you come very early if you want croquettas or pastelitos as they are often sold out of certain ones by 7:00 AM. read more

I wish I can leave 0 stars. The food is not bad. I'm not gonna lie. It's the reason why I would go there. But the service is SO TERRIBLE that it felt I was disrespecting myself going there. I stood there for over 10 min and no one said hello or asked if they can help. The store was not busy at all and the lady made eye contact with me and chose to ignore me. Another time I called ahead and the lady answered the phone like this (in spanish) "hello hold please" *click* put me on hold for over 15 min. I walked from my house down the street to "mi Abuelita's kitchen" just to find a 98% empty restaurant at 2pm with the phone off the hook and two ladies talking trash in the kitchen laughing. And guess what. You guessed it. I stood there waiting for them to notice I was in the restaurant and waited a good 5 min before someone came out of the kitchen. And when they did they checked on the old man at the bar. She looked at me. And went right back into the kitchen!!! I left irate. Tried this place out today... yeah not going back. The waitress was really nice but got my order wrong. Instead of writing it down she tried to remember. So she gave me tostones instead of maduros. Which is ok. But usually they just bring you an order of maduros. Not this time. She removed the tostones from my plate while I was eating with her gloves hands. It took me by surprise since that's never happened to me. Then she brought me the maduros. Appetizers came after the meal. So the food was ok. But the Vaca Frita was wayyyyy to salty. So I just left this place right now. I called to order some food over the phone 10 croquetas, some Cuban toast and cafe con leche. The lady that answered told that they don't take these orders over the phone, so I was nearby and decided to stop and stood in front of their window literally 6 minutes. There were no other customers at windows and only about three tables with customers. 2 ladies past by me at least 4 times not a one minute, I'll be right with you, no acknowledgement whatsoever. Last week I ordered 2 entrees of chicken breast steak with congri rice. The meals do not bring 2 accompanying items like at other restaurants. So I paid extra for fried sweet plantains. I was only given 3. Even though it was extra! So i was told on the phone there wasn'twnough rice for 2 meals. Then after placing me in hold, she came back on the line and said yes, they had enough. Once i picked up the order, i understood why. The portion again was small. It looked like they divided it up to make due. Finally, when we arrived there appeared to be only one table occupied but there was still a delay in getting served with a chicken soup that I ordered at the last minute. The soup was very good, however the rest of the food was underwhelming. The server had to ask a couple of other ladies that were iij n the back if the soup had been served since it appeared to be taking long to serve. She then went back into the kitchen herself and brought it out. The place also looked a but in need of maintenance and cleaning. Not going back, too many other options here in Hialeah. read more
