    Tostones and shredded chicken appetizer
    Sergio F.

If it wasn't for the shredded chicken in the tostones appetizer or the ham in the red bean soup I would almost say I turned vegetarian. Yes unfortunately this was the first time that I have had to leave Churrasco steak untouched. Abuelita's appears to be a more modern branding of the old Epicentro II Cafe at this location, where I last ate back in 2017. The interior may have been remodeled for the most part (they still have the Hialeah maquinitas in the back) but a lot of improvement is still needed. See, I was hungry for some good churrasco today. I looked for a new place and decided to give Abuelitas a try. As I mentioned, the place looks really updated and for a while - my appetizer course - I thought I found a new trendy spot in Hialeah. I ate a couple of delicious tostones cup appetizer. Take a toston (fried green plantain), shape it into a cup and fill it with shredded chicken and melted cheese, and you have the saving culinary grace for this restaurant. The plan was to sample this, take the rest home and enjoy my Churrasco. They became my main course since the steak tasted weird. It was a mixture of over greasy or almost rancid. Needless to say, the rest of the steak sat untouched. Even the fried sweet plantains (maduros) tasted greasy. The only other good dish was the red bean soup. I also did have a cortadito which was good. These are what eek out to two stars. The comments on some other reviews here - and my experience with service at the previous incarnation - on service attention? Sadly they still persist. The waitresses seemed busy chatting with other customers at the ventanita that no one noticed an untouched steak. The cortadito I did enjoy? Well when they finally came to clean my table and give me my bill one asked if I wanted coffee. I just pointed to the cortadito cup , and for the first time in awhile left barely a 15% tip. I really do wish them well, and that ownership continues the remodeling they did of the facade and interior with their service and food prep.

Great portions! Bistec de pollo, morro y maduros.

Was meeting with some friends for an early lunch last week and I suggested this restaurant. The inside is not that big and parking is terrible, but I figured the food would make up for it. Very few tables inside but it was clean and has a counter area where the customer can sit or can sit and wait for their to go order. Not sure what has happened during the past two years but the food wasn't that great this time around. We shared the simple egg sandwich with bacon, and ordered a cafe con leche, the croqueta sampler and some islas canarias croquetas. The simple egg sandwich was unflavorful. The croqueta sampler and islas canarias croquetas were my favorite. Sadly, the cafe con leche didn't even taste like cafe con leche. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed although it was just our table and two more tables she was serving. There was a total of maybe 8 customers. We had to keep asking her for more water and napkins.

We came in the evening and immediately, as we walked up, there was music, people laughing, talking, smiling... the energy was incredible. I also loved that there was a bar off to the side while waiting. We ordered a few mojitos and sat outside at the tables and benches, just enjoying the atmosphere. When our name was finally called and we walked inside, I genuinely felt like I was stepping into history. The atmosphere here is unmatched. The music, the aromas, the people. God, I loved it here and I hadn't even tried the food yet. We ordered the braised oxtail (which came with plantains and rice), salmon glazed in guava BBQ sauce, ceviche tropical, assorted empanadas, and a Cuban sandwich. Everything was phenomenal. The sauce paired with the empanadas perfectly. The guava BBQ glaze on the salmon was absolute perfection. It was the perfect combo of sweet, smoky, and flavorful. The ceviche had the perfect acidity and tasted so fresh and refreshing. This is one of the most famous Cuban restaurants in Miami. It completely lives up to the reputation. Highly recommended

DIRT AND MUD IN THE SALAD!!! WATCH OUT…read more We ordered the salad with mango and pecans. They do not wash there lettuce. There was literally dirt/mud at the bottom and I took my first bite and it felt like biting into sand. Upon spitting the food out onto my plate it was black sludge. Literally my tongue and teeth were black. The waiter came by and grabbed the plate when I was in the bathroom. I spent about 10 minutes trying to get that BLACK SLUDGE out of my mouth. When I was spitting out the dirt/mud wife noticed the bus boys laughing at me and there was not a manger in sight. When I asked for a manager he did not even respond. No apology or anything just a look of confusion. Worst experience in a restaurant in my life and I love to eat and have been to many types of restaurant big and small. Cheap and expensive and this one takes the cake. We were so bummed as I see thousands of great reviews. But if there was a zero I would have given zero stars the way they handled the situation. If you eat there in the future make sure to check for DIRT/MUD.

Great music and friendly staff. What we ordered- Croquetas 10/10 - Soft creamy inside and lightly crispy on the outside. Drizzled with a aioli style sauce. (In my opinion)the croquetas were so good they didn't need any sauce. Churassco w/ white rice, black beans and plantains 10/10 ohh this is everything a churassco should be. Juicy, tender and cooked full of so much flavor. The rice was perfect not sticky just perfectly fluffy and not oily and the beans are exactly what I always hope to be served at any Cuban restaurant. However,…read morewith slow service and nickel and diming (18 percent automatic tip) and smallish portions I don't think I'll be back. Having had a quick workday lunch and walked around the mall, I had worked up an appetite. I was seated in a corner table for two and my order was taken. The restaurant did not seem that crowded even for a Friday night but it felt like a long wait. Unlike many Cuban places, they don't offer complimentary bread. I ordered their "platanos a tentacion" (bacon wrapped sweet plantains), grilled chicken and moros. The rice was a little hard and the chicken breast on the small side and barely seasoned other than the onions garnishing it. Service didn't feel very attentive for me as a solo diner. Between finishing my dinner and waiting to order either dessert or cafecito, I also sat and waited until a waitress finally came by. At that point, I just got the coffee and my check. I don't believe I was offered a printed receipt, just the card terminal. I asked if the tip was included and pretty much in time when I was putting the usual tip (trying to be generous with 20 percent) I was told that it was a service charge, and that the tip was extra, but had full amounts starting with 18%. So basically I paid 30% tip for a small portion of food and inattentive service. Looking back, I see that this restaurant had a different name and I had enjoyed dinner at their other location six years back. It's disappointing to see how it has fallen off. As it were, a lot of the original creative items on the menu are no longer being offered.

When I first walked in, I was greeted by one of the servers. She spoke to me in Spanish and based on my response to her question, quickly switched to English. She sat me at a two-top. At first glance of the restaurant, it was decent size. They were doing construction around the entrance where the bar was, so it kind of took away from the appeal. While I've never commented on this before, I noticed my water and wine glass were so streaky. They weren't see through like usual but def. could have been cleaned/rinsed more. After being sat, I was given water and some focaccia crackers. While I loved the idea, the crackers were impossible to "dip" and made the oil pointless. For drinks, I went with the passionfruit margarita. They had a few cocktails to choose from, but this has been my go-to as of late. It was pretty good but nothing to write home about. As a starter, I went with the Cuban Caesar and for my main, I chose the pesto pasta and added chicken. The Cuban Caesar was easily one of the best I've had! I loved that it came in a Parmesan bowl and the yuca croutons were different but good! The croutons were a weird contrast because the salad was so cold and then you have these hot pillowy croutons with a weird texture. Regardless, I give the salad a 10/10. The pesto pasta was great; super rich but unfortunately, not much else. The chicken didn't have any seasoning and I almost wish I hadn't paid an additional $6 for it. The service was great and although they weren't that busy, I still believe it would have have still been good. Overall, I had a great time here and I may come back next time I'm in town.
