    Italian Inferno
    Austin B.

tl;dr the sandwiches are large, fairly priced, and pretty tasty -- all of the makings of a solid neighborhood sandwich shop It seems that every Philadelphian has their go-to neighborhood sandwich spot, and Mi-Pal's Deli (named after owner Mike Palestino) routinely ranks among the most popular options south of Snyder. The barebones convenience store-deli hybrid has been slinging sandwiches, from chicken cutlets to Italian hoagies, since 1986. A large, red-and-black sign hangs diagonally from the corner of the townhouse that Mi-Pal's calls home. Inside, the open kitchen takes up most of the already tight space, and the customer waiting area is further cramped by shelves of beverages, chips, Tastykakes, and Italian pantry essentials. The whitewashed walls have red trim, accentuating the comfortably unpretentious vibe. The barebones operation is outfitted with ceiling fans but no air conditioner. Multiple flat screens are mounted on the back wall, and a radio hums quietly in the background. The staff members all focus on slicing meat and preparing sandwiches, while a short queue of customers awaits their orders. Armed with a Grubhub coupon, I scheduled my order in advance through the app. When I arrived, the staff had yet to even see my order, but they promptly completed it within 5 minutes. I ordered the Italian Inferno hoagie with extra meat. I had heard that the "inferno"-style sandwiches tend to underwhelm in the spice department, so I supplemented my sandwich with Chipotle Gouda and a side of Jalapeno Aioli. The foot-long seeded roll was stuffed to the brim and was large enough to adequately split between 2. The prosciutto and hot capicola were plentiful and delicious -- the staff truly outdid themselves with the "extra meat". However, the hoagie lacked a certain oomph. Both the gouda and sharp provolone felt muted, and the signature fried long hots had an overbearing flavor yet only a mild, lingering spice. I found the jalapeno aioli to be a richer, spicier, and more complementary addition. The base sandwich was $12, and it neared $18 after the supplements (which I added on to meet a GrubHub minimum). Of the extras, I felt that the double-meat and the aioli were worth the additional charge. While I think the Mi-Pal's is a more-than-serviceable neighborhood joint, with hefty sandwiches and fair prices, I can't see myself returning unless I'm already in the area.

Part of the inside waiting area to the right of the order/checkout. Nice offering of meats and sides.

I wanted to wait until I tried a couple/few of the offerings from these guys before I wrote a review, but my second trip was a letdown because they had a sign out front saying they were closed for the day. I got lucky both trips with parking, but it can be challenging to find at times. I arrived around the lunch rush during the week and was impressed with how they were handling their orders, quick, communicative amongst each other and loud at times. They had delivery drivers running in to take bag after bag of orders. They were short with me when I ordered, but given the workload I'm not offended. The guy who took my order recommended a cutlet inferno for a first timer. I should have ordered ahead, but I didn't have to wait too long. The sandwich came on a gorgeous seeded roll, with fresh chicken cutlets, long hots and sharp provolone. The bread was fresh, cutlets were nicely breaded and tasty, but the sharp provolone needed to have more bite. The long hots were very mild and needed to be hotter for me to consider the sandwich a true inferno. It wasn't a bad sandwich and I look forward to trying other offerings, but when you put the word inferno in a sandwich name you need to bring some heat! In South Philly, a sandwich with sharp provolone should also come with a bigger bite. They run a clean place and the bread was excellent. I'll have to stop back for other offerings if I happen to be passing by.

Fantastic, fresh, diverse menu- something for everyone. Now offering delivery via the Slice app, you can have hoagies, burgers, cheesesteaks, soups, appetizers, or whatever delivered to your door. A fast and clean corner deli in South Philadelphia, I highly recommend you pay them a visit or check em out online for your food and snacking pleasure. Thanks to TC and the Philadelphia Food Review page for turning us on to this local gem!

This was a darn good cheesesteak. Very nice seeded roll. Good amount of tender tasty meat. Good cheese and cheese melt. The fried onions may have been the weak link. They were there and added a little flavor. I saw a lot of sandwich trays going out to businesses while I waited for my cheesesteak. Two Good Guys running the place. Very good Cheesesteak experience.

Large sandwiches and great quality food! I ordered a turkey sandwich and sweet potato fries for lunch and I was not expecting the sandwich to be so large - You definitely get the bang for your buck! The hoagie roll had a nice crunch to it and did not get soggy with the condiments on the sandwich. I am also particular to a seeded roll, which they have. My sandwich had a nice meat to bread ratio and was very filling. The sweet potato fries are also yummy!

Mi-pals is definitely one of my go-to delis in south Philly the breakfast hoagies/ wraps are my favorite this to order! They also have any kind of cold-cut or hot hoagie you can think of ! There's always a soup of the day and they have an assortment of grocery options like milk, fruit juices , snack items etc. If you're ordering grubhub is your best bet, but if you can order for pick up, support local :)

On a recent trip to the Philadelphia area, I visited Angelo's Pizzeria. My fiance is a big fan of…read morethe pizza, and wanted to first try it after hearing Dave Portnoy's rave review from One Bite. Since his first time trying it, we make it a point to stop anytime we are passing through the area. Angelo's is a very popular pizza restaurant located in South Philly, near the corner of South 9th and Fitzwater, and also the Palumbo Playground/Rec Center. For those who are tourists, it is also not far from where Pat's and Geno's are both located. Parking here can be challenging, as it is in the middle of South Philly. Sometimes, I have had to circle around. Other times, I have gotten lucky with a street spot somewhat close by. There is a now closed Rite Aid about a block down, and I have parked in that lot before to go and order/pick up my food. If you have someone with you, it might be easier to drop someone off and circle around until they are done. It will depend on the day and time, but each time I have visited parking has been a little bit of a struggle. The signage, as well as the crowd outside, will let you know exactly where the shop is. It is clearly marked with a black awning. The Pizzeria is a quaint shop, and there is no seating. When you enter, you walk right up to the counter to either order or pick up your food. I visited here on a Saturday in September, when I was in the area for a football game. On this day, I was coming in from Chester. So, I was about 30 minutes away. I thought I would attempt to call ahead, and then hopefully my food would be ready around my arrival. Unfortunately, this did not work out. I am not sure if they just do not answer the phone, or if they will stop answering once they hit a certain threshold of orders. However, I tried calling a plethora of times on my way to the store, but no one ever answered the phone. I understand this and am not necessarily complaining, but I wanted to include this here in case someone else is trying to call in an order and cannot get through. I arrived at the store just before 4:00 PM. I went right in and placed my order with one of the employees. Once you place the order, they take your name and phone number. You will get a text message when the order is done, and they provide an estimated wait time at the counter. This is nice, as you know exactly when to head back and when your order is ready. My order only took about 20 minutes to be prepared. When the order is ready, you come back into the store and get in the line on the right side. They will ask for your name, and you pay at that time. I also visited here last month, on a Sunday evening around 6:00 PM. I had a similar experience with wait time for my pizza on this trip as well - about 20 minutes until it was ready from when we placed the order. After getting the pizza, I decided I wanted to try a Cheesesteak. So, I placed my order for the sandwich and only waited about 15 minutes for it to be ready. We have always enjoyed the food from here. The pizza is hot, fresh, and has just the right amount of crispiness. We have gotten the Pepperoni and Sausage each time, and it does not disappoint. The pizza also reheats well, as we typically eat some and then take the rest home to enjoy over the next few days. The Cheesesteak was amazing. It is definitely better than any of the other tourist-type locations in the area. The bread was toasted well, and the mixture of the meat and cheese just tastes divine. I also added onions to mine, which was a nice variety in terms of texture. I will definitely be ordering this, along with my pizza, on all of my return visits. This place is good quality, and for that reason it is a good value. Our pizza is usually in the $35 range, but as stated it is well-prepared and has a nice amount of toppings. The Cheesesteak was slightly less than $20, which is comparable to other spots in the area. However, the quality on this one is through the roof. So, though it is a little pricey here overall, it is worth it for the product. The staff here are very friendly, quick, and efficient. Though they deal with these large crowds seemingly everyday, they are always pleasant to interact with. My waits for food are always less than they say, and I appreciate their hard work! I would love to see some type of online or phone ordering system for this location, as I know it exists for their other spot about 10 minutes away. As an FYI, they used to be cash-only, but started taking cards sometime in the past few months. This is a must-try spot in South Philly, both for locals and visitors. It is so popular that they are opening another location, as of May 2026. The food is worth the wait, and the sometimes hassle, that comes with ordering here. You can even make some friends while you wait for your order. I highly recommend Angelo's to anyone thinking about giving it a try! I am already looking forward to my next trip here and trying more of their menu.

This place couldn't have come with higher recommendations. The line was long, but we ordered within…read more15 minutes and the cheesesteak we ordered was ready in another 15-20 minutes. Being that I'm not from the east coast, and these are known as Philly cheesesteaks, I was super excited to try the food and even more so when I saw that the restaurant was Michelin rated. 100% I would rather have hunger pains than eat another meal here. The meat was bland and mushy. The fried onions were undercarmelized. The peppers were non existent. The sesame bread was tougher than I expected and super heavy on the sesame... which could've been ok, but because of the blandness of the protein... really dominated the taste profile of the hoagie. I feel like west coast people just have different expectations when it comes to what we expect from our food. I am a foodie and we have such a high standard as a baseline and this was not it. Sorry Philly... we got better cheesesteaks out here. You all should come visit.

We got an Olde Italian to split since we were going to Reading Terminal Market right after. How was the hoagie? Delicious! The Olde Italian comes on the best bread in the land IMO (Sarcones...seeded roll...you just cant beat it!). So crusty and great texture. This sandwich had all the goodies on it including proscuitto, capicola and sopressata. They use a crumbled sharp provolone cheese here (think blue cheese crumbles, but sharp provolone!) that is so freaking good! The veggies include roasted red peppers, lettuce tomato and onion. They top it with some olive oil and seasonings. Hoagie perfection! This was my favorite sandwich that I ate in Philadelphia and my favorite sandwich on my 1 week trip back East! I LOVED IT. If you are in Philadelphia and want the best hoagie around, come here! I can't wait to go back to Philadelphia one of these years and try out some more of their sandwiches. Just perfect! If you enjoy the somewhat newer Cooper sharp style that's out there you'll like theirs. The Cooper sharp was gooey, mixed in well with the meat and on the heavier side. The ribeye was thin cut, delicious and the portion was pretty hefty. Second visit I went with - The Nad - $15 Chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, Mike's Hot Honey that came on an unseeded Liscio's roll. The portion size was good, chicken was fresh with good breading, the hot honey was a tad on the heavy side, but the flavors all came together pretty good on this one. Sweet, salty, light bitterness from the arugula and some heat from the hot honey. I added Thin Cut Idaho fries to make it a combo for $3 extra and I have to say they were delicious. They smelled like McD's and tasted similar. They are cash only, but have an ATM on site. You can use a card if you order online. The one bathroom they have was pretty clean and organized.
