Top 5 non-cheesesteak things I have eaten on my cheesesteak adventure. Koch's Deli has been on my go-to list for a while. They have a 4.8 rating on Google Maps. It's summer, so I was hoping they wouldn't be crowded. I was reading their online menu. Most of their sandwiches have fun names. I looked at the steak sandwich section. There were no fun names. When I arrived at Koch's, I was greeted by a nice young man. I told him I review cheesesteaks but felt like I should get a sandwich that was more representative of Koch's. He suggested the Jewish Hoagie. I didn't realize how much he would change my life. I took my Jewish Hoagie to 2SP Brewing in Aston. I was taking pictures of my Jewish Hoagie at the bar. I was looking for "best pastrami" and Koch's came up. I went there all the time when I went to Drexel (BA '67). Loved standing in line and watching and listening and laughing with ? and ? ( sorry, can't remember their names). Next time I'm at HUP or the VAMC I will stop over and reminisce about my youth -- and expect a sample being passed around to the line. read more

Koch's still got it! I used to love this place when I lived in West Philly and I ordered them again after many years and those hoagies are still HUGE and flavorful. I love ordering a sandwich that lasts me two meals and is still as perfectly succulent the next day. Also I've tried some pastrami around town and I really think Koch's is the best, with Middle Child next (it's good but smaller) and Famous 4ths just too corned beef-y. Somehow I ordered delivery and the sandwich was still piping hot with the pastrami delightfully thin-sliced and springy on butter-soaked bread slices. Yum. Service was good, tends to get busy around lunch time. The ordering system could be easier (currently it's wait-in-line and order at the counter) but the food is worth it. The corned beef special is great - you need to special order Swiss cheese on it though if you're expecting it. Wide array of international Lays chip flavors, drinks, and other snacks. Legendary old school west Philly deli. Still in same location for at least a few decades. In what was formerly a gritty (borderline dangerous) neighborhood eons ago, Koch's has been a mainstay and has been renovated into a bright and clean deli in an increasingly family-oriented and young tree-lined area. The sandwiches are still excellent. And service is as friendly as it ever was, with warm banter and the staff handing out samples of cuts and pickles to folks waiting (they've been doing that for decades). Pretty hefty portioned sandwiches you can customize or order off their menu. One of those places you want anchored in your neighborhood forever. read more

My second time here, been wanting a real hoagie for awhile.. stopped in Koch's Deli no line, and grabbed a Cornbeef hoagie and a Turkey hoagie. They have a huge selection of what I wld say gourmet beverages. I got two hanks sodas and this organic cold pressed watermelon basil cucumber drink. The bottle sold me. I hope it taste as good as it looks hoagie was delicious, fresh meat and veggies. Only thing I wld add is more lettuce, I like a nice crunch when I bite into my hoagie. Late Saturday afternoon, I stopped in to see what the place looks like after the renovation. I have to say that I approve. It's been a couple of years since my last visit and thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich back then. But ... The place was the same as it was in 1966. I knew things were being handled correctly but the place was in desperate need of a facelift. The charm of nostalgia had worn thin. I will miss the ancient soda cooler and vintage refrigerated display case but it was time. They have retained the tradition of handing samples of product over the counter while you wait, which was all part of the charm of the original place. I knew Lou and Bob back in the day and even remember ... Mom and Pop behind the counter. It's good to see the place has continued the business in a way that they would approve. I neglected to take any pictures even though I have a brand new phone! My son did take this picture of a picture from the old days. It says it all. If only the prices were even close to what they were back then! "Progress might have been all right once, but it has gone on too long." Ogden Nash I paid $16 for a "Jewish Hoagie" which contains pastrami, corned-beef and a small amount of salami "kosher". It was tasty. My recommendation is to get a sandwich! First time at Katz's. I really enjoyed my huge hot pastrami sandwich. It was delicious. I will definitely go back again.

This was a very neighbouring experience. Soon as I entered the small store, I saw to left and right of me, what looked like pictures of the staff family and friends as well as celebrities who have visted Koch's deli. I also saw the menu on the wall and they decided to name their hoagies after Philly Schools such as the Temple or Penn hoagie. They have this Special K hoagie which has potato salad, corned beef, turkey, pastrimi, swiss cheese and russian dressing. I was gonna try that but I figured I'll start basic and I got the gobbler which had all turkey meats, veggies and russian dressing. It was delicious and huge! you definitely can't finish it in one day! Overall the staff was super friendly, the guy that made my sandwich was down to earth and he did a good job with explaining their selections. Prices are a little steep but worth it. It's a treat you give yourself, I pretty much paid about 16.00. So if your in the area come to Koch's deli to grab a unique sandwich and have a unique sandwich experience. read more

Shortly after being discharged from the Marines in early 1972, my mom introduced my wife and I to Koch's. I met Sid and Frances, and two of their older children - Lewis and Bobby. I think my mom knew the Koch's but it might have been hard to tell...everybody was treated like long lost family. As we were waiting for the line to reach the front, a waxed sandwich paper was passed around with sliced [something] for all to share. We didn't get back there for almost two months, but when we walked in, we were greeted by name!!! We became regular customers (since we lived in walking distance) for over 10 years, until we moved to New Hampshire. I will always remember the ambiance when walking in. It was jammed, but we were all "frangers." Friendly strangers... There was usually enough time to learn who was a student and who was a resident. Who was undergrad and who was grad...or a professor. One of the reasons I put up with the angst (aside from the camaraderie) was the FOOD. It was impossible to close a hoagie without a steam press, but I always worked at it. The meats had very little fat and gristle, and they always used the best cheeses. Koch's has been around so long, since 1962 I think, I don't know if there's anything else I could write that someone else hasn't written. I only just discovered a year ago while taking a walk in my daughters neighborhood. Although I know I forgot to check in a few times I've been there at least six times in 2019-20. My face had a big smile on it when I first entered this establishment in 2019. I had stumbled upon a truly great (food wise) Jewish deli in the heart of West Philly adjacent To University City. Yes, they are expensive. Comparable to Manhattan pricing. But if you get beyond the prices you'll realize that you'll get at least two meals out of one sandwich. If you pair it with their surprisingly reasonably priced side of macaroni salad, coleslaw or potato salad you can get 4 meals. And YES the inside although clean looks like its not been changed since they opened in i think 1962. (disclaimer: i speak of previous times inside. None during Covid) The reason I come here is this place has the "city" Jewish deli vibe that is different than suburban delis. And i dig that! The man that works the counter I assume is the owner and he has sandwich making down to a science. My items are always well packaged and double bagged. They include plenty of napkins which is good because their sandwiches are overstuffed. They also include utensils. because I think he remembers that I'm driving home with it. He just has that sense about him that he remembers customers. *** Special shout out to this business during COVID-19. Every imaginable precaution was taken. There were signs to not enter. The same sign requested that you maintain a safe distance of 6 feet if outside.As I stood outside i could see everything. I was able to order through the plate glass window And we could hear each other. The man making the food wiped down the counter with a pristine rag and then put on a fresh pair of gloves to make my items. I have loved every single item I have ordered here. Every sandwich has been memorable. Every side item has been tasty and fresh Koch's is open 7 days a week for at least 9 hours a day. It's totally worth your while to try. read more

Word on the street is that Koch's is one of the best deli's in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to try it out before they remodeled...however, I'm glad that they're up and running again. The store is very, VERY clean. They have a large menu and many drinks and snacks. I love the variety of everything here and was excited to see that it resembles the 'papi' stores that I'm used to back home. I know they're famous for their reubens and corned beef sandwiches, however I was craving a chicken salad hoagie and that's what I got. That jawn was bussin. My boyfriend got a steak, egg and cheese on a long roll and it was good too. Why the 3 stars if everything was good you ask? The price. Two sandwiches cost nearly $30. That's pretty damn pricey. I understand inflation and all, and I'm happy to be supporting small owned businesses, but it didn't hit us on how much we actually paid until we left. Koch's Deli is on 43rd and Locust Street. It's been around since 1966 and it's a staple for University City and us Penn students. It's currently open daily from 11am-8pm and you can place an online for delivery or takeout. For COVID, you can't go into the store and you have to wait outside for your order. I highly recommend calling the store beforehand to place an order if you're picking up. The wait for a sandwich is pretty long and I had to wait about 40 minutes for my order. I got the Reuben Sandwich on Rye ($14.95) and it was extremely filling. Koch's sandwiches are packed and by the time I ate one half I was already full. It also comes with two pickles on the side. I thought the sandwich was really tasty-- the meat was so juicy and the bread was perfectly crisp to hold everything together. However, I think their items are overpriced and the service was meh; the owner of the shop was a bit curt and I don't think he's a big fan of orders that come through Snackpass. TLDR: The sandwiches are amazing and there's a reason Koch's has been around for decades. But the service and prices are meh. read more

We ordered a sandwich and several other deli items today from Koch's and lemme tell you we loved the Sammy! Service 6/5 The delivery woman was very nice and there was little to no leakage. Food 6/5 Below please find a photo of the Sammy ...We shared the Penn Sammy but we substituted spice beef instead of tongue; this double decker Sammy includes corned beef, pastrami, spice beef (in lieu of tongue), Muenster cheese (I forgot to say no cheese) coleslaw, Russian dressing on real deal rye. The meat was cut deli thin and the sandwich should be eaten in private cuz it's juicy, messy and delicious! Koch's is also a full service deli and we ordered other items just to have for folks who wanted to make their own Sammie's. This list included: Chopped liver, potato salad, coleslaw, 1/2 lb each of corned beef and pastrami. We snuck a taste of the chopped liver and the potato salad. Delish! I always wanted to try that sandwich and basically begged my bestie to share it. In the future I'd probably just order the corn beef /pastrami mixed special with two slices instead of three slices of bread. We enjoyed the Sammy none the less! read more

I would put this place on par with some of the best kosher deli's I've eaten at. The owner Mr Sabbatt is friendly and quite a character. While I was waiting for my Reuben he offered me free samples; pickles, shaved ham, shaved roast beef & provolene cheese. He told me he had been in business for 65 years. The best sandwich I've had at Koch's Deli was the Hot Pastrami. Other sandwiches I've tried which are not bad: Corned beef special, Reuben, Chicken salad. I would not recommend the Chopped liver here -- it was not as good, fresh, flavourful as I'd like. Whitefish salad was okay, but it was extremely salty. The potato salad & macaroni salad are pretty standard, nothing special. Cole slaw was fine. Service could use improvement. Delivery was quite late (half an hour) although I'd put in a large order about a week in advance. read more

My Fam went to Koch's about 6yrs ago. I wish I could remember his name So outgoing. So lively. He was doing several things at once giving us samples of his food. This place Was Delicious! Untill my boyfriend wanted to make me happy THIS WAS THE WORST RUBEN I EVER HAD!!!! I reminded him that I have been there several years ago and I was so happy with it, that I came back again. I am going to just fast forward to the end of what happened. I was so upset so so so very upset when I opened that sandwich. It wasn't Grilled. It was not even warm. The Ruben was 75% sauerkraut. The bottom slice of rye bread was so soggy. There was only about 10% of corned beef on there. This sandwich was supposed to be HUGE browns it up it cost about $15. Not to mention that when we got to unwrap the sandwich we were salivating for....was Terrible! It bothered me so much I made my boyfriend go back to the deli. We wrapped it up and were ready to give it back. I had to get in line again because of the Covid. It is a very very very small little deli. So I didn't mind. Put my mask on walked up to the door. The guy that was at the door asked me what was wrong so I told him. He told The guy making the food. Then, OMG!! The nice guy started screaming " What did you order? What did you order? Koch's Deli (pronounced "caw-chiz" not "Cook's" as implored by the owner) truly makes the best Hot Pastrami sandwich I've ever had. It's three blocks from Penn's campus on Locust, making it conveniently located yet away from the busyness of campus. The food did take about 45 minutes to make because of the many orders they received, but it was truly well worth! The pastrami had these beautiful charred edges that complemented the tender and flavorful meat. The amount of cheese was perfect, allowing the pastrami to be the star of the show. The bread was nice and crispy, but a little bit too hard for my liking. But those pickles! They weren't TOO dill-y and quite satisfyingly paired well with the savory pastrami sandwich. This Saturday night, we thought we would order a good old fashioned corned beef special. Never had ordered from Koch's before. The bill came to $50.00- With add on charges. The cole slaw had so much mayo that it was liquid. The once great rye bread was a soggy mess and fell apart. We ordered two but threw away the second because of the cole slaw and the soggy bread.
