I want to call this spiffy-looking family-run market Chavez West because it reminds me of the more robust Mexican supermarket in Hayward (review: http://bit.ly/2pEYMO9). Recently expanded from a more traditional-looking market across the street and housed in a unique Art Deco-style building with its own parking lot, this true supermercado is centrally located in the Latin-flavored North B Street neighborhood of San Mateo. It made quite an impression on me with all the fresh produce out in front (photo: http://bit.ly/2pulnwG) and the expansive seafood and meat counter (photo: http://bit.ly/2QTAJXQ). Nonetheless, you can tell the merit of a mercado by how fresh and expansive their panaderia is (photo: http://bit.ly/2DqlF1b) and how many different types of tortillas they make (photo: http://bit.ly/2QXB37U). They score on both counts. Where they fall short is their smallish taqueria which didn't allow much room for seating (photo: http://bit.ly/2NBXn9q). I have to admit I liked Chavez's set-up of a diner inside the market and a separate panaderia next door. Presumably real estate restrictions didn't allow that here, but it's still a most worthwhile market to get your hard-to-find Mexican staples. RELATED - Interested in unique markets? New Mi Rancho market! This is an expansion market of the existing one across the street. It's been in construction for over a year now and it's finally finished! It has it's own private parking lot, which is huge. Yay no more finding street parking! Inside, the market is air-conditioned. The floor is super clean. Everything is new and sparkling. The prices are still super-cheap: they are basically the same as the prices at the old Mi Rancho market across the street. Got a bag of potatoes: it is still $1.99 for a whole bag! There is a food court inside, that sells burritos. The prices are competitive with other mexican places in the area ($6.99). The only difference is, the place where they make the burritos is super clean! Including the staff who are all very well dressed. I feel like with the clean setting, they really should charge more (e.g. $7.99 for a burrito would not be unreasonable, given the higher quality). The veggies and fruits all look fresh and green. There is a meat section, which again, is super clean. There are big fridges selling cold soda etc. Nice. Will definitely come back again to this place.

3.5 stars Mi Rancho has everything from a butcher's counter to a deli counter to produce to baked goods and more--everything you'd want from a Mexican supermarket! But they also have a prepared food section with grilled meats and stews sitting behind a glass counter, and they offer a simple menu of tacos, burritos, and plates. I got the shrimp taco, which was built on two mass-made corn tortillas along with beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, sour cream, and salsa, garnished with a lime wedge and a grilled jalapeno on the side. The shrimp filling had been grilled with onions and peppers, but since it had been premade and was sitting around for a while, didn't taste particularly fresh or flavorful. I also tried the asada plate, which came with a generous portion of freshly grilled steak, along with garnishes of pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, and beans. While this was a great value for the portion size, the meat was chewy and unevenly cut, and the sides and garnishes were rather flavorless (even the guacamole had started to turn brown). Though the service here was friendly and accommodating, and the prices amazingly cheap, the food just didn't compare to what you'd find at a nice taqueria.

I used to live in San Mateo and this was my go to store for vegetables, meats and Latino foods. Although I moved to the East Bay, every time I go to Peninsula, I stop here to stock up! The store I used to go to moved across the street to a brand new much larger grocery store with all of the products and more goodies. Even though I tinker with becoming vegan, I need to stop here when I'm Jonesing for the Green Chorizo, chicken fajitas, or crumbly Mexican cheese. I highly recommend this store, especially the flap/skirt meat for summer barbecues!

Big thumbs up for fajita mix ($6 /lb nice marinated beef, peppers, onions), green salsa, guacamole, limes, etc. Heat your pan to 400 F and turn when seared. In 10 minutes your family will be happy

First time I got a leg of lamb and more recently some double cut pork chops…read more I'm sure they are helpful if you ask questions but they were pretty busy both times I came in and it felt like you needed to know what you wanted for the most part. For the leg of lamb, I think most people get a whole leg of lamb. That was way too much for me and I think the butcher thought I was confused when I asked for less and asked me what I was doing with it. He ended up saying he could give me a half leg of lamb and I agreed. Thar was about 3 and a half pounds (bone included) which was the perfect amount. I seared it and then braised it and the meat fell off the bone. Delicious and the price was pretty good. I was cooking my first pork chop and decided to come here to get it. Their pork isn't labeled as Berkshire or Duroc or anything but that probably keeps the price down. For chops, they had boneless, bone in, and double cut (which was also bone in). I mentioned I wanted it to be about 2 inches thick and the butcher said to get the double cut.I got 2 beautiful thick pork chops for $6.99 a pound so about $18 total. The regular cut bone in pork chops were the same price though obviously smaller. I brined this overnight and reverse seared it and it was great. The chop was a loin chop- loin and then a tenderloin nugget- not a pure rib chop. Cooked really nicely and was tender which I think was partially the overnight brine and also their pork. They do sell some vegetables and grocery supplies if you want to just make a single stop. They also have a deli with some sandwiches that looked good and prepared foods. I was very focused on buying the things I came in for and getting on with my day both times but I would like to take a closer look in the future as it looked good. Solid butcher shop and clearly loved since it was busy both on a weekend and during the week. I'm sure I will be back.

A roast beef for hubby and turkey havarti cheese in Dutch Crunch for me. At the concert, hubby thought the bread was too dry and didn't like the sandwich. But I think sandwiches taste better from the nearby Safeway even.

And after gazing at their product listing one day, I can kinda tell that they probably service a lot of ethnic shops like taquerias and small brick n mortars. You actually don't see or interact with any of their products directly. Upon opening their public door, there's a small office with a window. There's a current product sheet there with current pricing. You have to go by this and not with what you got in the past, or internet postings, as this sheet will be their current inventory and pricing. And pricing these days can vary greatly from week to week as well as supply. There's also a hanging bulletin board that has a lot of weekly specials. Once you've found something, you just place the order with the nice receptionist. She'll draw up a receipt and take your payment. CASH ONLY (for some reason). You then have to go outside where your car is and wait for a warehouse employee to bring it out to you. They are quick, like I've never had to wait more than 3 minutes. I've tried this place like 3 times now since I work nearby and just hit this up on my way home. Here are some finds: *In a very industrial zone of San Leandro. Close to the Costco but much deeper in industrial streets. Can't see it from a main road. Gotta go under an overpass then parallel a railroad track. Now that I know where it is at, it's a breeze. But first time looking it was a bit of a challenge. *All meats I've gotten thus far are frozen solid. But nicely frozen where you won't have to break anything separating things. Lots of things are well sealed in tight cryovac. So will have to spend time defrosting goods, can't go home and start cooking. But I just put whatever I'm planning on cooking in the fridge for a good day and just cook it the next day or so. And in what meats I've gotten even though frozen at one point is still of really good quality once defrosted. *Beef seems somewhat 'Choice grade' but I haven't seen any labeling to say so. Steaks I've tried are meatier and chewier than most grocery stores in my area, but in a good way. Feels more natural and not as 'water-y'. I've only tried 1 lb Rib Eye Steaks and thin cut NY strips so far, and have been more than pleased. Also tried some lamb shoulder chops and they too made for good dishes. *Pricing less than retail grocery stores unless there is mass grocery sale. Competive with Costco beef pricing but here you'll have to defrost something slowly. But you won't have to go through the Costco grind of getting aggravated in the parking lot, weaving through hundreds of people and waiting in life-sucking lines. I mean I'll still go to Costco, but if I can go to Costco less, then I've just freed up a big part of my personal time. *If I'm ever gonna feed a big group, big bbq, holiday party, big potluck etc., this will be a legit option. You can get cases of stuff here, whole ribeyes and briskets, cases of chicken/pork/lamb. They even have bacon, sausage and common cheeses on wholesale. And a big draw here is they have a ton of ethnic meats, which is why I'm sure they deal with a lot ethnic mom n pops. Tripe, suadero, beef cheeks, pork necks, livers all here. Probably won't find that stuff at Costco. *Warehouse hours, open like super early like 6-7 am and close by noon. Works for my hours but not for many others. Good fit for me, so they'll become a resource for me.

Unfortunately, I found most of the meats to be quite bland and lacking flavor. The beef ribs, on the other hand, were the complete opposite--they were way too salty. It felt like there wasn't much middle ground. I even tried adding hot sauce, hoping it would give the meat the kick I was looking for, but it still didn't do much for me. The surprise highlight of the meal was the chicken wings. They were incredibly tender and flavorful inside and out. I also really enjoyed the grilled pineapple--it was perfectly sweet and delicious. The salad bar was decent with a good selection, but nothing particularly memorable. One thing that really stood out, though, was the staff. They were amazing--friendly, attentive, and constantly checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Their excellent service definitely made the experience more enjoyable. Overall, the experience didn't quite live up to my expectations, especially considering all the praise the restaurant gets. While I loved the chicken wings, grilled pineapple, and outstanding service, I wish the signature meats had more balanced seasoning and flavor. Given the price, I expected the quality and taste of the food to match the cost. For a premium dining experience, the food should leave you feeling completely satisfied, and unfortunately, it fell short of that for me.

The space itself is small, intimate, and quaint, making it a cozy spot for some skewers and drinks. I ordered a large bottle of Sapporo and greatly appreciated that it came with a chilled glass. The tako wasabi was also good and is one of my favorite things to pair with an ice-cold beer. The mentaiko udon was satisfying, although I thought it tasted much more like kimchi than mentaiko. Luckily, I enjoy kimchi, so I still liked the dish, but it might be disappointing for anyone expecting that richer, briny mentaiko flavor to come through. I'd honestly consider renaming the dish or making the description a little clearer to avoid confusion. The skewers came out relatively quickly, and most were enjoyable, although there were definitely a few hits and misses. Surprisingly, the ribeye was tastier than the wagyu skewer, which leaned a little dry. The chicken skin was solid, though not quite as crispy as I've had elsewhere. The scallop was easily one of my favorites--it was tender, perfectly seasoned, and delicious. I would've happily ordered a few more if I had room. The tsukune, unfortunately, was pretty dry and plain, even after dipping it into the egg yolk, so that's one I'd probably skip next time. Overall, not every skewer was a winner, but there were enough standouts to make it a satisfying late-night meal. The cozy atmosphere, cold beer, quick service, and convenient late hours make this a spot I'd happily return to after a late flight. A solid 4/5 for me--although getting off a long and stressful flight may have made me a little more forgiving too, haha.
