In my experience, a lot of small-town spots tend to mute their bold, traditional flavors to cater to local palates. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect pulling up to La Mexicana in DeMotte, but I decided to give it a shot. The meal didn't start off on the highest note for me. They serve warm/heated salsa with their chips. I know some people love a warm salsa, but it's just not my thing at all. Luckily, as soon as the main plate hit the table, any initial doubts vanished. I ordered the carne asada plate, which came out to just under $20, pretty much fair market value these days, and honestly a bit cheaper than what you'd pay in a larger city. The carne asada itself was flat-out incredible. The steak was seasoned to perfection, retaining all the rich, bold flavors that made me fall in love with Mexican cuisine in the first place. Hands down, this was easily among the best carne asada I've ever had. The portion size was fair: not a ridiculously massive heap, but certainly enough to leave you full and satisfied. The plate also featured grilled cactus (nopales), which isn't something you see on every standard carne asada plate. While cactus isn't personally my favorite, I wanted to eat the dish as the chef intended, and I really respect them including it. This was an easy 5-star experience. Given how far off the beaten path DeMotte is for me, I have no idea when I'll ever be back in the area. But if you're driving through on a road trip and craving legit Mexican food, don't let the small-town setting fool you. This place delivers.

But we walked in anyway and sure enough, there was a bar area to the left complete with tables for dining. We sat and were promptly greeted by a friendly waitress who took our drink orders and provided menus and two bottles, one with tomatillo salsa and a red salsa and house made tortilla chips. This made me really excited, because they resembled the tortilla chips we were served at resorts in Mexico many times! One bite of the chips with the salsa and I felt I was back in Mexico! They were perfect and those salsas were spicy and addictive. The best we ever had!! They were so good, in fact, I ordered some to go. Now, as for the tacos, I ordered steak, pork, and Al pastor. My husband ordered steak, barbacoa and chicken. They arrived wrapped in in paper--looked like they had been steamed as well. My, my,my!!! They were an experience, so delicious! Now we have gone to many a Mexican restaurant--even in Mexico! But this place will hold a very special place in my heart. They really deserve a more central location with better access. If you are looking for something more like a family restaurant, far removed from the tourist areas in almost any Mexican city or town, then you have found the right place. The place is clean. The chairs, tables and booths mismatched and well used but serviceable. The menus photocopied. The lighting is a little harsh. There's the compulsory photo of the Pope and the Madonna hanging in the corner. All of this and great food combine to make this my go to place for authentic Mexican cooking. I just sat down for a carry it dinner of 3 tacos pastor ($7.95 - Mexican style with cilantro, onion and tomato, thank you) some very good rice and the best beans I have had since I moved here from Chicago in 2005. I wish I could have shown you but I thought about pictures after I ate ... the smell was driving me wild! If your looking for real, authentic, family cooked food ...
