    Cuban food
    Diane W.

My husband and I took the SOBE TOUR DES FORKS with Pauline. She was articulate and full of information about the city's history, culture, architecture, and of course the food. In fact, she was one of the best guides we have had for a food tour (and we've done quite a few). How was the food? It was just 'ok'. My husband felt there wasn't enough although I think I would qualify that by saying there wasn't enough food that he liked. I would agree that compared to other tours we have done, there was less food. The web site says there are 5 stops, we only had 4.

ABUELA'S CUBAN KITCHEN: desert style puff pastry with a great semi-sweet Guava filling

Excellent food tour experience! If you're even a little apprehensive about taking this tour, don't be. You won't stick out in the crowd, or feel like a dorky tourist. It's a great way to get a taste of South Beach history and the variety of food experiences available, all within walking distance. Wish we had taken the tour earlier in our trip so that we could have retraced our footsteps for some really good eats. Our tour guide was Kristina, and she really showed us a great time, even anticipating our need for shade and cool environments. Super knowledgeable and brought us to places that you probably would not find on your own, especially if you're a tourist. (Yelp reviews are helpful, and we used them early on, but if you want to eat like a local...) The tour was perfectly planned out, including periodic stops and discussions on how the art scene and city has evolved over time. Stops included: THE CAFE AT BOOKS & BOOKS: A wonderful starting point and starter of Chips and Guacamole, Lebanese style hummus, tasty fish ceviche, and an excellent cold corn salad (4 stars). ABUELA'S CUBAN KITCHEN, were we had a desert style puff pastry with a great semi-sweet Guava filling and traditional super-high-octane Cuban coffee. Would love to come back and sample more. (4 stars). CHALAN ON THE BEACH: First dish was a chunky, cold Ceviche de Pescado (local fish and shrimp), which was super tender and tasty with its mayo-based style sauce, instead of a distinctive citrus based broth. Included four excellent side dishes, such as thick slices of cold sweet potatoes infused with cinnamon. Most amazing was the Lomo Saltado with juices, which we devoured. Although it came with double carbs, both fries and rice, this may have been the single best dish during our entire trip. The cultural vibe here is great. (4 stars) BOTECO COPACABANA served a wonderful cashew juice that had strong hints of pineapple juice, making it super delicious, and refreshing. We also had a shredded chicken and soft cheese croquette type dish that was amazing. (3.5-4 stars) THE FRIEZE ICE CREAM FACTORY, their Key Lime Pie ice cream was unique and I can't imagine it gets better than this. Spot on flavor(s) with great execution including size and distribution of pure ingredients. The Cappuccino Chip ice cream was also excellent. (4 stars) The other guests in our group told us they do food tours all the time, and now we know why. Thanks Kristina for showing us a great time!

She brought ponchos so we could continue on as it rained. It was beautiful to learn about and see this neighborhood through the eyes of someone who grew up here. Toni knows so much history and seemed to know so many of the people, too! The tour has so much food - I was honestly more than full at the end and I didn't even finish all of my portions. I think it was a really good range of drinks, desserts, and food. Even though that coffee cup looks small, that's a full serving size and it was strong! I really really appreciate that this tour not only accommodated for vegetarians but also chose options for me that were realllllly good. Instead of the cubano, I had these fried plantain cups stuffed with veggies. They were SO good and seasoned well! And the spinach and cheese empanada was also amazing. My friend who got the meat options also loved her food. This tour is the perfect way to learn more about Cuban history, the history of the neighborhood, see all the street art, watch a game at domino park, and experience some of the best food in Miami. I cannot recommend this enough!!!

Alex our instructor was fun, engaging, and an intelligent instructor that broke the dances down for even beginners to follow easily. We first had bachata lesson at 8pm, followed by complimentary mojito and Cuban bites, then wrapped up with salsa lesson at 9:20pm. I wished salsa lesson was a full hour, followed by more fun salsa dancing with instructor dancing alongside (you know, cuz regular student folks won't keep dancing salsa on their own without pros' boosting presence) because afterwards everyone pretty much stopped dancing salsa after the last song after lesson ended. Then it was regular club time. Good vibe and we had fun. The wristband we got allowed free entry to the club downstairs so we could enjoy the cabaret performance and backstage live music band a bit too. Overall I would recommend Alex and Salsa Mia without any reservation for anyone with an open mind looking to have a good dancing time! Try it - don't be scared as there's no need to be! Given Miami's heat, the air conditioning in our room was extremely weak, and we couldn't lower the temperature below 70°F initially. The "queen" beds also felt much smaller than standard queen size, more like twin beds. The maintenance and housekeeping were equally disappointing. The bathroom sink was clogged, and housekeeping regularly failed to clean the room properly or restock toiletries unless we repeatedly asked. We had to request extra toilet paper, shampoo, and body wash multiple times. Every day, something was missed , one day there were no hand towels, another day the living area in our queen suite wasn't cleaned at all. We also asked for hangers several times and only received them after the fourth request. The night receptionist, I believe his name was Kevin, was especially unhelpful. When we complained about the AC and requested a room change, he told us someone would immediately bring hangers and assist us, but no one ever came. He also told us that we will get another room in the morning, but when we asked in the morning, the request was denied. Basically he just lied on our face to avoid any accountability during the night. Eventually, maintenance came to check the AC next day after we again asked another person on the reception ( i forgot his name but he was atleast helpful), But, initially they claimed it was fixed without improving anything. Only after we insisted that the cooling still wasn't working did they finally replace the control box, which allowed us to lower the temperature below 70°F. Overall, the stay involved constant inconvenience and unnecessary frustration. I genuinely don't understand how this hotel is rated 4 stars , neither the service nor the room quality reflects that standard. The only positive aspect is the beach access, but honestly, you're better off just purchasing a day pass rather than staying here. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

The staff were generally friendly, and a few were especially helpful. They handled three packages I had shipped to the hotel efficiently, though there was a sizable per-package fee. Small touches like afternoon boozy gelato samples and a lobby change machine for breaking $20s into $5s were appreciated. Breakfast at Lolo's was decent. My Marriott status included breakfast for two, though the included menu was much shorter than the regular one and the portions were modest. Still, the food was cooked to order, tasted good, and the servers kindly let me order both breakfasts since I was traveling alone. I didn't try the Japanese restaurant on site, but I heard good things and enjoyed the neighborhood restaurants instead, especially La Grande Boucherie. I paid a substantial premium for an oceanfront double room, but I'm not sure I would do that again. The balcony and glass door were fairly small, and the balcony felt boxed in for privacy. Next time I might prefer a cheaper park-side room on a higher floor, which could still offer a nice park and ocean view. The biggest disappointment was the late checkout. My Marriott Platinum Elite status is supposed to include guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, but the hotel would not honor it. Each day I was told to check again later, and in the end they could only offer 1 p.m. That created real scheduling problems, since I had planned around the advertised benefit. With no good place in the hotel to work or take calls after checkout, I ended up going to the airport hours early. The status is supposed to provide a room upgrade, but that wasn't available either. A couple of other issues matched complaints I had seen in recent reviews. One elevator stopped for several minutes with a group of us inside and did not respond to the buttons, which was uncomfortable even though the door eventually opened. I also received a call inviting me downstairs for a "welcome gift," which turned out to be a Marriott Vacation Club sales pitch. That should be presented more honestly. Overall, this was a decent stay and I might return. But given the failure to honor the guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, I would compare other options carefully before booking again.

I asked repeatedly for an early, 2pm check-in. When I go there around 2:15, the front desk area was in chaos. There were 2 people being waited on and I was first in line, but had to wait for ~10 minutes to get any attention. Even with repeated communication, the room was not ready. My kids were heading into melt down mode. Not a great start. I got a call at 2:45 that my room was ready. We headed back around 4 and then it was the same chaos, and very long wait to get our 1 piece of luggage. Once upstairs, the hotel is very neat and tidy and our room was a 2 bedroom suite with a balcony, facing the bay and city. The condition and working order of the room, bathroom, and kitchenette were excellent. We loved the minimalist aesthetic. They did have a happy bday card and some chocolates for me in my room - a very nice touch. The main event downstairs is the pool area. They had a DJ playing vibey lounge music and it was packed with people chilling and drinking as mature adults. Definitely not a wild spring break scene. The pool is heated, too. The best is being in the pool as the sun sets - very magical as the place goes from day to night. Great hotel - lousy front desk. I reviewed the restaurant, Baia, separately - great waterfront vibes, so-so food, and disorganized service.

I went to order an empanada from the front and the man that was behind the counter (after taking a 80 payment for 3 food items and 2 coffees..) walked to the front desk gave the girl a hug went outside did some stuff and then came back to make our drinks. I don't even understand what happened there there was one employee working behind and he just walked away. I was told from the front desk that they only have one available cart for us to use and that the carts they had the previous day "disappeared"- the bellman was incredibly rude and laughed at me bc I asked how the carts from yesterday just disappeared... (might've been a bad question but a place like this that is so expensive... it makes no sense to have 1 cart in the entire hotel) I had to ask I believe a manager(Sebastian) he was so incredibly helpful and got us what we needed and really was the only helpful staff member there he rocks, he apologized oh behalf of the other staff and was helpful and patient with the situation! The food was probably the worst food I have ever eaten- they need to figure out that situation first. For the prices they charge I really wanted to tell the chef face to face how bad it was. The fish was over cooked to the point it was literally so crispy like a French fry there was no moisture left in the fish. The fries (were very good) the coleslaw had no flavor it tasted like mayo and cabbage like nothing else seemed to be in it.. somehow bland... The fish was bland. The tartar sauce was bland. Somehow even the horseradish sauce they gave me was bland. It was sincerely the worst fish fry I have ever eaten in my entire life. And I do not say that lightly........Really haven't had an experience like this anywhere else it was utterly ridiculous absolutely laughable for what they charge and the location. The best part if my meal was the fried and ketchup. So sad. The pastries? The chefs makes pretty croissants but the filling is absolutely terrible it was like curry chicken and peppers nothing like a chicken empanada.. didn't have any beef options all in all I would absolutely never recommend this place to anybody ever. Seems like it's going downhill or staff just doesn't care! I've seen the other recent reviews and they aren't great.. Doesn't seem like they let the chefs put anything on the menu themselves and really streamlined the whole thing terribly. I would not recommend this hotel unless you want rude service and terrible food. The only good thing about this place is that it's on the water..

I would describe this hotel experience as a series of minor inconveniences, of which if there were…read moreonly a couple it would have been fine. However, added up altogether, it was not the experience we were looking for here: - Weird smell throughout second floor and our room - Loud! I had earplugs on me, but complimentary earplugs would be useful. This doesn't bother me as much as I am not a light sleeper, but if you are I would strongly recommend against this location. - The room does not get very dark--could benefit from blackout curtains - Step into bathroom, which was inconvenient as this was advertised as an accessible space and my boyfriend has an injury and is using a knee scooter - No towel hooks near sink - Slippery bathroom - Hard to turn on water in the shower and barely any came out - Outlet is basically under nightstand so you have to get on your knees - TV didn't turn off but just went into screensaver mode (I tried both the remote and the button on the TV) - Phone number didn't work--the phone rang and then eventually got a busy signal - No pool--you can use a pool a couple blocks away - Have to enter through a restaurant The main things this place has going for it are the location and the price, but it does feel like a "you get what you pay for" situation since it was cheaper than other Miami Beach options we were looking at.

While I'm constantly traveling, I find myself experiencing many ups and downs--though, fortunately,…read morethere are more ups than downs. My trip to Miami started with a challenge: I arrived at an Airbnb only to realize I was never given a check-in code. After calling customer service and waiting 45 minutes, I was told the "owner" claimed they didn't even own the property. I then moved to a different hotel, but it failed to meet the expectations set by its reviews. Finally, I checked into Hotel Chelsea, and it was beyond great. I'd give the atmosphere a 4.8 out of 5; they even have an on-site bar and restaurant. The staff is truly what made the experience amazing. The hotel has a vibrant Cuban vibe with locals from Cuba, making it feel like a little slice of Havana. Between the beautiful pictures on the walls and the music, every detail captured the essence of Cuba. The hotel was incredibly clean, and I really should have stayed there from the start. Let's talk about the food: I ordered the seafood pasta, which featured very large shrimp, mussels, clams, and scallops. I could tell they were high-quality, authentic scallops because of their natural, irregular edges. I paired the meal with a cold beer, and the pasta was easily a 4.7 out of 5. It was the perfect meal to fuel a night of dancing in Miami! I highly recommend this place for both staying and eating.
