Mich Tech One Review
If you're considering having them install or repair a furnace, you may want to read this before you call them. This review is for the store at the Willis and the Belleville address; they are one in the same business. I had them install a 90% efficient Bryant Furnace in my home. When it was sold to me, the purchase included a "first two years Mich Tech maintenance agreement" and a "two to ten year Bryant extended warranty". One of the reasons I purchased this furnace was that it would cost me less over the long run and should be basically automatic once the settings were put into the interface. The first winter we thought the humidity was low in the house, but since our furnace had a humidifier, we thought it was doing the job it should be doing since it should be automatic. I'd never before had a furnace with a humidifier, I didn't know what to expect or what sounds I should hear when it was in operation. Again the next winter, we felt the humidity was very dry. I called Mich Tech and they sent out a repairman. He discovered the humidifier had not been wired into the furnace correctly and it wasn't working. Mind you, by now, three technicians had been out and looked over the furnace and air conditioning system under the maintenance contract. Obviously none of them had bothered to check the humidifier and its operation. Finally the humidifier was working. After changing the thermostat a couple of times, they upgraded me to another more sophisticated thermostat/interface. Five years later they replaced the blower motor. Seven years later they replaced the inducer motor. Eight years later the interface/thermostat starting showing me system malfunction indications. They changed the main circuit board, then changed the limit switch. After these fixes were tried with no success, I was told the problem was not enough air flow. They had me leave the fan running all the time saying that would fix the problem. When all these things were tried, again with no success, they sent out another tech and he claimed the heat exchanger was clogged with sawdust. So far, all of this had been covered under the extended warranty I purchased. At this point I was told this clogged heat exchanger was a maintenance problem and I would have to pay to get it fixed. I claimed that the described problem couldn't be correct. After having discussions with the technician, he said he would have it fixed if I paid them $150.00; they would get the parts under the warranty. At that time, I asked what would happen if that didn't fix the problem. The tech stated they would have Bryant send someone out to look at the unit. Later the heat exchanger was removed, there was nothing blocking the flow of air around the heat exchanger. The old heat exchanger was as clean as the new heat exchanger that was brought in to be installed. When this failed to solve the system malfunction problem, I asked Brian for my $150.00 back since the changing of the heat exchanger wasn't needed or necessary. He told me, "I don't know what kind of a deal that was made with my technician". Basically meaning, I'm not giving you your money back despite the fact that all the work done on the exchanger was for no reason. They finally did ask Bryant to send out a Bryant technician to solve the problem. While the Bryant technician was looking over the system, he mentioned a number of potential problem areas he saw that related to the installation of the furnace. One of the intake or exhaust pipes was facing the wrong way, an air conditioning line, was run parallel and clamped to a household pipe, the humidifier was installed in the wrong location and possibly some ducting work should have been done to aid the air flow. Keep in mind, during all these problems, I had to make time in my schedule for the tech to assess the problem, and then make time for him to repair the problem when the part came in.
