I've recently been introduced to the idea that you can get your hair cut by one hairstylist and your hair colored by a different hairstylist. I must say, it's truly the best of both worlds. I now go to Jessie to get my hair cut and it's a dream. It was so easy to communicate the kind of cuts I like (dreamy layers with movement!) and the kinds of cuts I don't like (too many layers that are borderline mullet!). Jessie cut my hair dry, which was a first for me. But she had a great point that it allows her to see which way my hair naturally falls - inevitably making it easier for me to style myself at home. Simply put, genius. The cut left me feeling so fresh, and the blow dry/style made me feel like a queen. read more

Honestly I'm giving four stars because I want to be fair and forgiving. I want to make it absolutely clear that I didn't come here as a regular customer - I came to see one of the apprentices who was practicing to be on the floor. I see apprentices fairly often for color and blowouts (never haircuts, since I'm very picky about those and only see the best) and usually stick to Sine Qua Non and Art + Science. Sine and Art+Science have an apprentice consult with you, make decisions about what's best for your service, and then have an instructor come over to approve the color and also check in with the customer. After the service, an instructor comes to check to see how it looks and evaluates the apprentice - if the customer isn't happy the instructor takes responsibility, but it's never an issue because the instructor approved the color choices in the first place. Unfortunately, there are lots of ads on salon apprentice for people who just want to practice and aren't under instruction at all, and that's the apprentice I ended up seeing at Michael and Michael. She was friendly and nice, and the color she did was acceptable, but she was not listening to me. I talked about what I wanted, and what I absolutely did NOT want and what I hate, and she told me she understood completely. Then she went ahead and gave me what I hate. After I came back from the bowl and was looking at myself, bewildered, seeing the exact opposite of what I asked for, she reminded me of what I said, and quoted the words of what I had said I didn't want. It's not a huge deal - it's not like I'm afraid to go out in public or anything. I didn't cry or feel emotional about it. It's not the look I wanted, but it's acceptable. It's a look that can easily be fixed and reversed. My hair hasn't faced undue damage/processing that can't be fixed with deep conditioning and my weekly at home Olaplex. It was only $25. But I think this mistake could have been avoided if they had a real apprentice program where an instructor oversaw all services. And the first thing I did when I walked out was call Art + Science and schedule an appointment for color with one of their directors, because I was just kind of let down to go through hours of color at a salon and walking out with hair I hate. I'm sure the regular stylists at Michael and Michael are perfectly lovely - I just thought that people who see apprentices need reviews too! read more

My experience at Michael & Michael was phenomenal. The atmosphere is fantastic and the social distancing excellent, plenty of room between you and the next chair! I had Eden, an apprentice and a very sage and experienced trainer, work on a long bob for me and it turned out silky and beautiful. My opinion and preferences were always taken into consideration, but I only wish I had let them lead more as now I can see where some changes would have made a better cut for me overall (shorter instead of my "i have to be able to put it up" request, etc). I would not hesitate booking my next hair appointment here. If only it weren't COVID, I would have strutted straight into another amazing place with that lovely cut and silky shiny head of hair....Gorgeous place, gorgeous cut! read more

I have never seen anyone in Michael and Michael with bad hair (I usually end up leaving with hair envy instead). This is the only place I trust to dye/cut my hair. After being away from this awful salon for some time, I've learned just how much my hair was being neglected by my colorist. Never, ever was my hair ever deep conditioned ones a month with Olaplex.... my hair was picking up orange from the sun because of my balayage and never was I ever told, I should buy purple shampoo by Oribe, so I can wash it ones a week to tame the orange my hair will pick up from the sun until I saw my hairdresser. My current hairdresser/colorist has made my hair look gorgeous and healthy again and can't say enough about how she has turned my hair around to looking healthy. When I went to her, she could not believe how orange my hair was looked. She was also in shock at how my hair was never deep conditioned ones a month with Olaplex. My mother-in-law even commented on how healthy my hair looks now. She even said "it was looking very dry before". I would never recommend this salon. To think I was going there for a good 3 years, paying all this money for nothing but to have my hair look unhealthy, dry and orange. read more

Had a bizarre experience with extreme scalp inflammation after a visit there and scalp and hair have never recovered.

I found this salon after a girl (who was heaven sent) told me about it. One of those "who does your hair, it's amazing" encounters. The salon is ultra cool & modern, clean, and very easy to find. They offer valet for $12, which if you're getting a few services done, would be cheaper than feeding a meter (meter cost $8 for 2hrs) Front desk is courteous & very helpful in making sure they accommodate you when scheduling your next appt. Now- stylist. VERY thorough, VERY knowledgeable, and VERY talented. I came here with what I define as one of the worse haircuts I've ever received and Joseph made it all better. Also, Ryan, gave my hair that look that I've been yearning for forever but no one could get right. Talent I tell you, talent! Also, something I love that I've never experienced before is that the guys are pretty quiet. They definitely chat a little, but for the most part they let you relax and scroll through your phone read trash mags, it's pretty awesome. I always leave feeling relaxed, refreshed & gorgeous !! And lastly, cost. I know this is subjective, but I'm my opinion, considering the caliber of talent, products used (i.e.; Oribe, R+Co etc;), and location, I'd classify this place as being pretty reasonable. I got my haircut here in April 2011. I went in for a minimal haircut, maybe one or two inches and wound up getting 8 inches hacked off of my hair, and I am still growing it out. It was up above my chin where it was below my shoulders before. It was my 40th birthday and I was so distraught. I had good highlights from Florentina, but then I had a man (from michigan and married is all i remember) cut my hair, but apparently he wasn't understanding me. I was there a total of 5 hours, cried in the chair and finally the owner finished cutting my hair. But in order for it to look good, more inches had to be cut off. In the end, the hair cut from the owner was superb. He didn't charge me for the hair cut. He gave me great customer service. However, the loss of 8 inches off of my hair is still impacting me now.. I'm a single process blonde who went to have my roots done. It was my first time at this salon. Overall its nice inside.. fairly standard for a high end salon. However, although my stylist had no problem insulting my current color... and explaining in detail how she was going to over process it just to make it look the same, but with more highlights (dye it darker, then highlight it with a lighter shade and an even lighter shade... which sounds horrible and nothing that I would ever want)... she did have a problem matching my current color. I still have roots, only a few shades lighter than my natural color (and a few shades darker than the rest of my hair). I've never had a stylist be this far off. When I called to cancel my next appointment and complain. The receptionist just said "oh, I'm sorry". Yes, they should be sorry.. In case you are a similar kind of person-- mid-twenties, have long hair and a funky/bohemian style that is classy, then this could be a good place for you. I like them both because they quickly realized I am not a chatty person when it comes to being a client at a salon, and they let me relax and be. I really appreciate that. I also did the Keratin treatment with Jessie and it's awesome. It's only been a month, but so far so good. Scott is awesome! I've lived in Chicago for about nine years, and tried out about a million hair stylists and never been happy...which lead to cutting my own hair for the past couple of years...whoops! Not only did Scott not make fun of me, he applauded my efforts with genuine sincerity! All of this while gently pointing out that, because I can't really see the back of my hair while cutting it myself, I had cut about a 3" stairstep into it. Just adorable. He spent a generous amount of time transforming my damaged hair into something I could really be proud of. Seriously--I still get compliments even though my cut was three weeks ago! He even gave me great recommendations on what products to use (I should add that, up until Scott, I never used products, and just bought the best smelling shampoo/conditioner regardless of the outcome) and they have made an awesome difference without me having to change my ways. Now that the damage control is underway, we're doing something more drastic next time. He was totally confident to help do whatever I could envision which I thought spoke highly of his versatility. I have natural red hair that my mother and every old lady adores, but it's kind of boring. I went to Marta to color my hair for the first time ever (if you don't count the time I colored it green with Manic Panic in the 8th grade). She was super friendly and eased my nerves. Most importantly, she gave me grea color! It looks natural, but she added more brilliance. I got tons of compliments the next day. Even my mother, who previously told me she'd kill me if I ever colored my hair, approved! Natalia also gave me a great cut. My hair feels incredibly light and healthy. I wish I could give this place two separate reviews -- one for the amazing color experience I had with MARTA, and one for the extremely negative experience(s) I've had with VIRGINIA. First off, yes, Michael & Michael is expensive, but I'm also of the mind that you get what you pay for with hair services, and I don't mind paying the price as long as my hair looks really good. I moved from Atlanta several months ago where I was a regular client at Siggers Hairdressers for years, and I discovered Michael & Michael after an extensive online search for a Chicago-area salon that looked like my kind of place. I've been to MARTA twice for color -- not only is she an extremely friendly, talkative person with a fun personality, but she does AMAZING blonde highlights. Very natural-looking (but still BAM! eye catching) and strategically placed. She is very meticulous and takes great care and time doing what she does. MARTA gets 5 stars as far as I'm concerned!!! VIRGINIA, however, is a different story. After my 2nd time seeing Virginia, I made up my mind that 1) even if I returned to Michael & Michael I would never ask for her again and 2) I was determined to let the salon owner/manager know how I was treated by her. VIRGINIA is rude and unpleasant, and above all she (for the 2nd time) refused to cut my hair the way that I asked. My 1st visit to Virginia, she had a snotty attitude and she made a comment about how she "wouldn't wear her hair that way", referring to the style I was asking for. Well no shit, we're not styling YOUR hair, we're doing mine! For my return visit to Marta a couple of months later, I saw Virginia again for the mere fact that she was available that day and I had seen her before. Although she had been rude to me the 1st time, I decided to give her a chance since she gave a satisfactory (although not above average) cut. **Note: I find it funny that Virginia thinks she's some kind of ground-breaking hair pioneer because she does dry cuts. She will ask you if you've ever had this done before as if you're supposed to respond: "oh my God I've never heard of that ... how avant-garde!" Here's the kicker and my reason for not returning to Michael & Michael: My 2nd visit to Virginia, she was rude (as usual), but this time she outright insulted me. I showed her a picture of the angled bob that I wanted with cascading, side-swept bangs. I have fine, straight hair -- not too much to ask, right? Virginia proceeds to tell me that she'd rather cut my bangs straight across (are you kidding???) and that the way I wear my bangs is, quote, "LAUGHABLE". I was so horrified that I was at a loss of words (which as you can tell, is unusual). I decided I would not make a scene despite the RUDE, UNNECESSARY, and completely INAPPROPRIATE insult she just threw at me, so I paid for my services ($180 for a cut + highlights) and tipped my usual 20% on top of that (again, I must have been in shock to tip Virginia after that -- I should have flat-out refused to pay altogether). The next day, after I had regained my cool, I called the salon & asked to speak to the owner regarding the extremely negative experience I had had with Virginia the day before. The owner(s) were not in, so I was transferred to the salon manager. The salon manager was extremely apologetic -- and that's it. Although I didn't ask to be reimbursed for Virginia's cut, I sort of felt like they should have offered since I was treated so rudely. Somehow I was still left with the feeling that they didn't find Virginia's behavior inexcusable, and that I must have misunderstood her or something. The point is this: People go to hair salons so they can leave feeling cute and refreshed with a fabulous new 'do. Some of us are willing to pay more than others for this end result, but in a city like Chicago, there are LOTS of other nice salons that treat their paying customers with respect. I'm not asking for much here -- I just want a great color + cut experience without being insulted before I step out the door. UNACCEPTABLE. And for this reason, I will not be back. read more

Based on Yelp reviews, I booked an appointment for highlights with a senior colorist. My hair was over processed and completely damaged! Ruined! My hair was so damaged that short pieces were breaking off and flying around (kept getting in my throat, mouth, food, clothes). The overall results looked ridiculous, too. My brown hair was multicolored and looked cheap and tacky. The debacle cost $300.00 (without tips) just for the color (no other services included, not even a blow dry). I had to cut my hair short to start to rid myself of the dead, broken, straw-like hair pieces I was left with. I did like the owner who was nice enough to introduce himself to me. I don't write reviews, but I'm pretty upset with this salon. The front staff were all very nice, and my hair colorist seemed nice enough at first. I found this place after extensive research online, looking at reviews and pictures of clients. After the coloring, I had dried my own hair at their blowout station. I came to find that the coloring and "balayage" was nothing like the picture I showed him. There was nothing gradual or smooth about the color change as I had asked him to do. And it didn't really get blond at the end like I asked. When he came back to the blow dryers to check on me, I told him it wasn't how I wanted it, and he just told me that it looked fine to him and that was the end of that conversation. I have now payed $180 for "balayage" that for that price should've been done properly. Now, I have to pay $200 more at another salon just to fix this. Years ago, I had an amazing haircut. Inexpensive, grew out beautifully... the stylist was gone from the salon without a trace. Years later, googling for help with thoughts of that amazing haircut done by a "michael" memorable for the dry technique, I came upon this salon. Deana gave me a FANTASTIC cut, and I got gorgeous color (from a gal whose name I can't remember). Expensive, but since a good cut grows out well, you don't have to go so often... actually, I would give the place five stars except for the cost. Which is understandable. It's a nice salon, but not overly done, and I didn't feel ugly, or poor, walking in with my loehmann's bargain jeans :) My last cut was at Beauty Skool Dropout in Ukie Village. First of All, this is the best place in chicago and every one here is so nice and attentive. Marta fixed my hair from a horrible visit I had at other salons. I seriously love my hair. I also brought my extensions to color to match my hair and Alexa did an amazing job. I finally needed a hair cut after all that And I must say Jospeh is amazing. He took his time and styled my hair perfectly. It lasted for 5 days. I couldn't have been happier with each visit that I' have come here. I can't wait to come back ! Thank you all! read more
