I've just now realized that I have bounced from salon to salon in search of that perfect stylist, salon environment and most importantly perfect color. I followed Florentina, previously of Salon Buzz to Michael & Michael. I LOVE this place. It's a beautiful salon with great light, clean and modern design, and is home to some of Chicago's most in demand stylists. I recognized a few talented faces from the Harpo studio green room. Back to Florentina, book in advance cause this star is worth it! She has always been on top of the most advanced coloring techniques. She convinced me years back to get an ombrë and I have to say she's the best. People regularly ask who does my color. She's also friendly, funny, and makes you feel at ease when you are in her chair. She's been hyping me up about the new Balayage technique that she'll be trying on me next. See this woman, your hair will thank you. I almost forgot- they carry the ORIBE hair line! read more

After spending way too much money on my first balayage, I was in search of a new salon and luckily my friend gave me a great recommendation to check out Michael and Michael (Thanks Lauren S.!). My first appointment was for a cut with Misako. First time visits with Misako are $200 with a $100 deposit. Kind of pricey given that my last cut was $36 in Chinatown. I'll be going back again for my next cut. I don't know if this is how she always cuts hair, but she straightened my hair as she went along. If you're looking to make an appointment, book well in advance, especially if you want a Saturday appointment! The staff was very nice about my difficult schedule. I went back twice afterwards for color appointments with Cristina. One was for a full color and the second for balayage. I didn't really have a good idea what I wanted but Cristina knows what she is doing. She was able to give me my naturally dark hair the color I wanted without too much processing. Services do not include blow dry so either book in advance with a stylist or get excited to dry your hair yourself and sample all their cool products at the blow dry stations. Luckily an assistant was able to blow dry my hair on a moment's notice and it was free! I was very happy with my experience(s) at Michael and Michael. It's very convenient to get to since it's right off the Brown line and everyone from the front desk to shampooers to stylists and colorists were very nice and knew what they were doing! She does a fantastic job helping me figure out what I want and what will look the best. Throughout the years and many different lengths, Jessie ALWAYS does an incredible job. I can't say enough good things about this salon. There is most definitely a reason why it is constantly being written up in magazines and winning awards. It is truly the best. The front desk staff is incredibly kind and helpful, and the salon itself is so aesthetically pleasing that you hate to leave. I've been getting my hair cut with Natalya for a few years now, and she is a wonderful, top-notch stylist. I always leave a very happy customer and she's an absolute pleasure to chat with too! I've also had my color done there with various staff, and have always been in good hands. The colorists are experts in maintaining the health of your hair and using shades that will compliment your skin tone, it's truly an art and I appreciate the fact that they have the expertise to know what is right for each individual. It is also the only salon I've been to where I go to comb my wet hair after a highlight and it doesn't break and is not tangled or damaged in any way. My most recent experience is why I had to write a review. After my usual colorist from the salon moved away, I made a poor decision and tried getting my hair highlighted elsewhere, through a friend's recommendation. I hated the result but didn't know what to do, figuring another process would be too much too soon. I came into Michael and Michael for a (complimentary) bang trim, and was put with the co-founder, Michael, who noticed the poor job the other salon did on my hair color. He trimmed my bangs up fabulously and told me to come back in anytime to have a colorist here fix what went wrong at the other salon, free of charge! Now that is customer service. Being due with a baby any day now, I was able to come in the very next day, and Marta worked pure magic on my hair in a matter of minutes. It just goes to show the caliber of the team employed at the salon. I walked out feeling like a new person, I wanted to cry and felt so incredibly grateful. Thank you Michael and Michael, now I can feel confident knowing my hair is ready for the first photos with baby :) And am looking forward to my next color service with Marta - I'm still amazed at the transformation she made - she sure knows her color! read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Scott for years now as well as many of my friends - woman and men. He does a terrific job and will always work with you on the style you're trying to achieve. He gives great advice and is very friendly. He also turned me on to many wonderful (not to mention, nice smelling) hair & skin products. Just had my third visit to Michael and Michael. My haircuts by Misako are exceptional and the color done by Rebecca (have seen Marta as well) has been lovely and lasting. Shampoos by Barbara make me never want to leave. In addition to excellent cut and color, what I really love about the salon is the lack of attitude and frenziness that seems to be part and parcel of the industry. What a welcome relief to find professionals who love what they do and do it so well. From the welcome at the front door through to the end of the appointments, the thought and care given to the experience is exceptional. So glad to have found this salon. Best salon in the city, hands down. I have been to many throughout Chicago, unfortunately in my life hair is a commitment ;). I have trusted them for a variety of hair needs: my wedding do/color, complete hair chopping, color changes, updos, bangs, you name it. Every single staff member is amazing and when my main colorist/stylist has been busy or out for the day, you can trust other team members to do an amazing job. They are artistic and many folks there win amazing awards, and you never have to worry about something basic not being right. Top quality talent works there. This has led to me completely trusting who I go to, as they keep me honest on what ideas are good or bad, or when we do want to try something crazy, they let me know what that means for hair care. Eeesh, well i'm glad for the happy customer below but I'm sorry to say I had a mediocre experience with Scott. It was my first time at the salon and I was very impressed with how they have utilized a small space to make it seem modern, stylish, and clean. When it came to get my hair washed, they couldn't locate a hair washer so Scott happily did it himself. He was very nice and friendly and I had high hopes for the way my longish hair would turn out. Unfortunately he hacked massive layers into the hair I had been growing out for quite some time. My hair is somewhat thin and I have a difference of almost six inches between the long parts of my hair and the layers he cut in, leaving me with wispy thin strands that sit on top of my longer hair. I would say very amateurish. But nice guy...onwards to the next salon, unfortunately. read more

Got last haircut here almost 1 year ago. I grew my hair out and donated it to locks of love. So obviously I was nervous, because my hair was crazy long, I was about to chop it all off, and I had not gotten a haircut in like 2 years! Tina was my stylist, and we talked about what kind of cut I wanted and would most flatter my face and accommodate my lifestyle. Well, once they discovered I was donating it, they had a junior stylist straighten my hair with a flat iron to make it even longer. What a thoughtful touch! I loved that they did that. So Tina pulls my long ass hair into a ponytail and chops it off...scary! Then we talked through how much shorter I wanted my hair and various layer lenghts, etc...and then...the BEST blow dry EVER. Obviously I did not want to wash my hair for a week. Lasted a few days, then the greasy hair became undeniably noticable....sooooo sad :( They are pricey, but they do an excellent job. read more

I have gone ot Michael for several years( I think it started in 1984) I have never gone to anyone else for a cut and highlights... now only a cut.... I WISH he would do my highlights... the BEST of both I have ever had.... Never told him what to do.. just said long or short........no one can give you a better cut (and highlights) then Michael. read more

In my experience ( 5+ years) for cut (Tina) and color (Lisa) Michael & Michael is just the BEST. First, Tina and Lisa are amazing...my hair grows super fast and Tina has taken me from long to short, long to short and through many styles in between. She's always super creative, patient, and professional. Rumor has it that Tina does a fantastic "blow out" on long hair..Lisa, too, takes the time and makes color changes as needed. Beyond the skill and creativity, the salon itself is very zen and RELAXING and cacoon-like, even on busy Saturday periods. You can chat or be quiet, read or have a Mimosa (Saturday)...while beautifying. A highly recommended experience. read more

I recently visited Michael and Michael Salon after getting hyped reviews from friends and co workers. The salon itself is clean and modern almost has a New York park Ave. feel. Anyways cosmetically it was on point. After much thought I decided to see Michael, owner and master stylist. Now it's not easy setting an appt. to see him and the price tag is not very appealing either but for great hair you go great lengths. Lol. He was a very Nice gentlemen and definitely knowledgable. But to cut to the chase the haircut was pretty simple and to say the least not worth $400. I definitely enjoyed my experience there but will not be returning to Michael specifically. The other stylist were much more cost friendly and seemed to do just as good if not BETTER a job! read more

I miss Misako, who used to cut my hair. Moved to Houston in Oct 2008, still haven't find a half decent hairstylist. Misako is one of the only few hair stylist who can dry cut hair, and that's how I prefer it. read more

I've only been here once, but Marta really did an amazing job on my color. I have platinum blonde hair and I'm trying to transition to a lower maintenance color. She really understood what I was asking. The cost is high but she didn't say "come back in 4 weeks and pay the exact amount". Instead, she said "come back in a couple months, the color should grow out naturally and nicely. No need to come back". This is why I trust her. My color really is growing out nicely. This color job feels far superior to anything I've gotten. read more

After going to the same stylist for many years, I thought I'd refer my sister to her when she wanted to go light again. Her hair was dark so she explained she wanted to start going lighter understanding it would be a gradual process. Unfortunately, her experience was a disaster. They ended up giving her choppy. orange, brassy highlights over her almost black hair. It was terrible... and it was the day before her sister in laws wedding! Thankfully I knew of Florentina and called her at Michael & Michael for a 911 intervention. She was able to get my sister in that same week. She gave her a thorough consultation and a realistic scenario of what she could expect. She took her time and the results were great. She evened out the all around color, put highlights where they were missing, and evened out the tone. I mean, this hair was a disaster but not to a professional colorist like Florentina. I'd highly recommend her for anyone looking to color their hair, repair a bad dye job, and just anyone interested in a true professional! She's awesome! read more

I went to Lisa (colorist) after reading an Allure magazine article raving about her. She's a friendly person, no airs at all. I chatted away for about an hour while she put in more foils than I could count. The color wasn't exactly what I wanted, but she made a fan out of me anyway by the very natural way it looked and grew out. read more

I have been a fan of Michael Jacobson for years and years. He's always treated me with respect and has a true passion for the art of hair. My hair has always turned out wonderfully. I've also been to every one of the colorists there and have never had a bad experience! Ever! All due respect to Brenda, but what they meant by "old hair" is that the outgrowth is three years old and is, therefore, well...old hair! I have difficult damaged hair that has been every color possible- from the blondest, to black, back to blonde again. (I'm very indecisive. I want it all!) Florentina listens to what I want and gives me her professional opinion. My color has looked nothing short of fabulous. I have never received soooo many compliments and we're getting it back into healthy condition. She is good! Maybe too good! I have been able to go longer than ever between appointments and still someone tells me on the daily how much they love my color. Also her prices are very reasonable. I've been going to this salon for several years now and its high time I posted a 'yelp'! Mitch is my stylist. I used to go to the owner, Michael, who does superb work, but he is naturally booked up way in advance, and I don't think that far ahead and needed someone easier to get into on short(er) notice, so Mitch was recommended. From the first cut I it was clear Mitch had Michael's expertise and then some. My cut is a difficult bob--I have fine textured hair, some of which I've lost since menopause, and thin hair is tricky--especially with a bob--but Mitch is METICULOUS and the cut always grows out sooooo nicely. Mitch takes great pride in his work, and has a great rapport with his boss, (which I like to see). He's a pretty good conversationalist, considering that I'm a fifty something mom of seven, and he's a twenty-something biker. The salon is full of young people, but they are kind and professional. I've never been treated rudely or dismissively. Michael is always in the salon working when I am there, and I have the impression that he keeps a good eye on "quality control" issues. I also want to mention my color person--Rebecca. I have NEVER had a color/highlight from Rebecca that wasn't top notch. She's been doing my hair for at least three years, and I've almost forgotten that I have been graying for years. I tend to let too much time go by between colors, so that is saying a lot for Rebecca's skills. There was a stylist, no longer at Michael's, who I went to before I went directly to the owner for my cut. Her first two cuts seemed fine, but once she gave me a mediocre cut, skipped the dry cutting. She was having a medical issue that eventually led to her leaving the salon. I think she was just uncomfortable on her feet, nevertheless, it only happened once. As I said Michael is careful about the work his stylists do. I am bringing my teenagers to Mitch now that they are old enough to appreciate a great cut. read more

I can't say enough good things about this salon! I have been going there for about five years and couldn't be happier---I wish I had known about them earlier. In my opinion, they are the best in the Chicago area and I've been to others that tout themselves among the elite. Michael, who is my stylist, is such an expert with each client's hair and listens first to the customer's taste and needs and then shares his up-to-date design input. He knows hair and is a perfectionist. And, by the way, he is also patient! My colorist, Stephen, gets it right every time as well. The front desk professionals are wonderful, too. I had a very unpleasant experience at this salon. I arrived for my scheduled haircut with Jessie and was told by the front desk staff that there was no such appointment in the computer. They blamed this on a "computer glitch". I was then told it wouldn't be a problem to see Jessie, and they kept me waiting for 20 minutes till they found her. My haircut w/Jessie felt rushed and just average. Her demeanor was arrogant and rude; no apology and no effort to be attentive. I spent $70 on a mediocre haircut. I was so angry that I called the Salon later that day and spoke to the manager. I explained my bad experience and how I was treated unprofessionally and rudely. He was actually quite apologetic, but I will not return to this Salon. read more

Before moving away from Chicago I would get my hair cut at Michael & Michael with Deana. She was great. She helped me with my hair for my wedding and did a fantastic job. We arranged a practice appointment where I brought idea pictures, we talked about the event and she tried out some styles with my hair. The day of my wedding I went to the salon with my mom and maid of honor and we all had our hair done at once; we all looked fantastic. The stylist at Michael & Michael are all super professional. The first time I went to M&M I got the BEST haircut. Too bad that stylist moved to NYC. I went back and tried 3 more stylists and all were mediocre at best. I never experienced the same cut. The last cut I had was with Michael himself. SO disappointed. For as much as he charges ($250.00) I was expecting unbelievable results - he didn't deliver. I'll never go back again. The worst haircut of my adult life! I went in and had a great experience the first time simple trim. So I thought I would go back I said to Jessie that I had 2 young children at home and a high profile job needed a low maintenance haircut and she said "oh trust me you'd look great with bangs". Not sure why I let her do it but the whole haircut was awful. I figured I was paying $70 for her experience and that she would know if the bangs would look good on my face. I couldn't style it, the bangs looked awful. I called 1 1/2 weeks later bc i tried to see if I was just having bad hairdays and was given an appt for an adjustment. 2 hours before my adjustment appointment I was called by the salon to say that Jessie was no longer available bc she would be completing another service and that by the way it had now been 3 weeks since my haircut that I probably needed another haircut. What kind of customer service is this?! It was already a huge inconvenience to get back to the salon and I had arranged to have someone watch my kids to get this adjustment and apparently the salon thought it was my fault that their hairstylist didn't know what she was doing. I called the salon and was told Jessie had left for the day. Ok so I was upset by the cancellation and rude message but now this salon has no integrity just flat out lying to their customers. Not what I would call a high end salon. As Jessie's client I expected her to call and follow-up but she never called to apologize for the terrible haircut or explain why she cancelled my appt. I requested the owner complete my adjustment and apparently she did such a terrible job that even after the adjustment my hair was impossible to style. The owner apologized casually and offered no service recovery. He proceeded to tell me that he would not recommend bangs on my face and that since I had just had a baby I needed my layers cut differently. So overall I paid 70 for the worst haircut of my adult life ( the only haircut that was worse was the one my sister gave me at home when i was 8 and she was 13) and 40 in babysitting costs total price of this terrible haircut and rude service = 110. It's been 3 months since my haircut and I'm still waiting for my layers to grow out. Stay away from this place they call a salon! read more

I had a hair-tasrophe at my usual salon and after a few failed attempts at "fixing" my hair, I decided it was time to go somewhere a bit more professional. I wanted to test the waters, (very particular you see) so I scheduled a cut with Scott. I was pretty pumped b/c the yelp reviews were pretty stellar for him. The morning of my appt it was pouring rain! I waited in the cold, rainy street for nearly 30 minutes but could not find a cab. I called Michael and Michael to let them know I'd be about 5 minutes late but I was having a terrible time finding a cab etc etc etc. The receptionist was really rude. I honestly thought I was doing them a solid by giving them a heads up and it was a crappy situation that I couldn't really avoid. I was told that if I was more than 5 minutes late I would lose my appt. Once I finally got there, soaking...There was NO ONE else in the salon.... I just thought it was dumb to tell me I was going to lose my appt when the place was barely open. Oh well.. I was brought to the back by Scott- he got right to it and my hair ended up looking amazing. I was so nervous about cutting off too much length and while I almost had a panic attack in the chair watching him cut off what looked like mounds of hair, I ended up with still very long but very healthy hair. He was extremely nice and easy to talk to and eased all of my apprehensions due to my hair-tastrophe and my less than awesome experience with the front desk crew. I was a little surprised at the end of the appt I was not escorted to the front to pay but maybe that's not the culture of the salon. Anyway, the salon earned my trust so Scott recommended I get my color fixed my Florentina. I came in a few weeks later and she did such an AMAZING job on my color. My hair was back to it's former glory and I owe it all to her. I'm a Michael & Michael lifer now. The reason I did not give a full 5 stars is b/c after Florentina colored my hair, I had to blow dry it myself. I know that "time is money", but I just was a bit annoyed by that. I've been to other salons where that has been the case, but I personally feel that when a client is spending over $170 for a service, that they are owed at least a sweet blow dry. From now on, I will make sure to schedule my color and cuts on the same day so that I don't have to blow dry my own hair...apparently only those who cut hair, style hair. I guess it's a small, inconvenient price to pay for having the stylists do a truly amazing job on my hair. The front desk people were much nicer on the second visit. The salon does have a bit of an "uppity"/"hipster" feel which is totally annoying but definitely worth dealing with if it means Florentina and Scott are working their magic :) read more

I work at GLAM'D down the block and the staff there is amazing! The salon is beyond gorgeous inside and the staff is just as great! They send us over clients for eyebrows and lashes all the time and we send them there for hair cuts and color. I go to any of the colorists because I know they'll each do a great job on my hair. Everyone in there makes me feel at ease and they're very friendly. I don't feel intimidated at all going in there. Michael always give me the cut I want and makes it even better than I expect! Everyone says hi when I come in. I almost feel like Norm from Cheers!
