A hard-wired smoke detector in our basement had been sounding a false alarm for several days and we needed an electrician to replace it. Two technicians came out and quickly took care of the problem. In addition, they installed another detector in our hallway and relocated one in our utility room. They even found another battery-operated detector in our basement that had been previously removed but was continuing to "chirp" and disabled it as well. We also discussed the need to perform a "heavy-up" of our electrical panel and was given a quote . We went ahead and set up an appointment to do the work but later decided to get additional quotes before making a commitment, and so cancelled the appointment. Overall, we were favorably impressed by the two technicians, Darwin and Robert, who handled our smoke detector issues. They arrived in good time, got right to work, were friendly, respectful, knowledgeable, and efficient. We were entirely satisfied with the work performed. read more

I contacted an HVAC company I've used previously to repair an issue with my AC unit. Upon arrival, I learned that Michael Bonsby HVAC, Plumbing & Electrical had acquired the business. I was confident I knew what the problem was, which I was correct about, and it should have been a straightforward, minor repair. However, the technician claimed a major component was failing. He installed a test part (the one I knew was the issue) and then used a device to test the major part. He showed me readings on the device that indicated the major component was bad and stated the system would not work unless I replaced the expensive component or installed an even more expensive new AC unit. When I told him I needed time to consider my options, he offered a discount but only if we signed a contract that same day. These high-pressure sales tactics raised significant concerns. Fortunately, I sought second and third opinions. I was able to have my AC repaired for over $6,200 less than Michael Bonsby's lowest quoted price for the major part replacement (never mind an entirely new AC). I strongly suspect the technician used a device he knew was defective and provided false readings, or he used a faulty test part that he knew produced false readings. While I understand companies aim to maximize profits and technicians may earn commissions on upsells, this is disgustingly dishonest. I strongly advise getting multiple opinions and quotes before proceeding with any work from Michael Bonsby HVAC, Plumbing & Electrical. read more

During a routine maintenance visit, a service technician advised the tenant that the unit allegedly contained "bacteria" and that a $400 cleaning service was required. This representation was made without any testing, sampling, or laboratory analysis, and was based solely on the technician's personal opinion. As a direct result of this unsubstantiated statement, the tenant became distressed and is now asserting that the unit contains mold and is demanding to vacate the premises. The technician's conduct and manner of communication were highly unprofessional and inappropriate, particularly given the absence of any factual or scientific basis for the claims made. Such statements expose the property owner/management to unnecessary risk, create tenant alarm, and reflect poorly from a public relations and liability standpoint. read more

I strongly recommend against using this company. Michael Bonsby sold me an HVAC system that repeatedly malfunctioned between its installation in August 2022 and removal in October 2025. Over those 3 years, Bonsby had ample opportunities to identify and correct the defect in the system, but it failed to do so. Nor did Bonsby ever offer to replace the system. In fall 2025, after years of frustration, I requested that Bonsby refund my purchase price for the defective system. Bonsby has refused and in doing so is misstating the facts and applicable law. At least 20 times over 3 years, my HVAC system failed to shut off when the temperature in my home reached the temperature set on the thermostat. Instead, the system continued to run - and the actual temperature continued to rise/fall - and could only be shut off by flipping the circuit breakers. In one case, the heat ran until it was over 80 degrees in my home. In another, the AC ran until it was 62 degrees. I brought this problem to Bonsby's attention on numerous occasions, starting in August or September 2022. I scheduled multiple service visits to give Bonsby a chance to inspect the system, diagnose the problem, and fix it. All of Bonsby's attempts to repair the system were unsuccessful, and the system continued to periodically malfunction. At the final service visit in May 2025 and in my written requests for a refund, I presented or described photos, videos, utility bills, texts, invoices, etc. that document this history. Bonsby now has the nerve to claim that I am not entitled to a refund because the system was "running and operational" at the time of the final service visit and because I did not afford them a reasonable opportunity to cure. Throughout, Bonsby personnel were unresponsive, unprepared, and/or dismissive. My requests to speak with a supervisor in the service department were ignored. At the final service visit in May 2025, the technician represented that he had left a message for his manager and that his manager would call me back. No one from the service department ever called me. At that point, I concluded that further interactions with Bonsby would be futile and that I needed to hire another company to replace the system, which I did in October 2025. Bonsby continues to make irrelevant arguments about how these actions affected the availability of remedies under the manufacturer's express warranty. As I have explained in writing and verbally, Bonsby, as a merchant that regularly sells HVAC equipment, makes an implied warranty of merchantability, which is the basis for my refund request. On a call, Bonsby's Regional Director of Operations said he had never heard of an implied warranty of merchantability and suggested I was making it up. (He also questioned the truth of my statement that I was an attorney and sneered that, even if I was, I could have been in the bottom half of my law school class.) I would avoid this company. read more

A technician came on Monday to repair my HVAC. He could not complete the job because he needed a part and he said he thought the part would come in within a few days. On Thursday I called the company to check and was told if someone would call me back and no one did. On Friday, the same. So now it has been nearly a week without heat and I have no idea when it will be fixed. On top of that, the company emailed me a recommendation for a new unit "due to the system's age." My system is only 5 years old and was installed by the company Bonsby bought out. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! THEY ARE ABSOLUTE CROOKS - SHADY, LIARS, AND VERY UNETHICAL. I went into an agreement in which they were to replace a old meter can with a new one and other electrical work. On the day of the estimate, they stated the meter can had to be replaced with a new one as they don't make parts for it anymore and that they found one that match the existing one. The next day, they only replaced some parts instead replacing the meter can with a new one as stated in the contract. First they said that the new casing doesn't fit and that it would be a lot of work to change the casing, but insisted that everything inside the new casing were replaced with new parts. Liars!!! I asked for pictures and they sent picture where only parts that had been damaged were replaced. Old parts were not replaced even though they insisted that everything inside the meter can were replaced. The pictures they sent obviously contradicted that they said. They know they are in the wrong and offered to reduce $500 off a $5100 contract! I had estimates for $1500 and $1800 for a new meter can, but because of the urgency of the situation, I went with this company since the other electricians were going out of town for Thanksgiving and wasn't available to work on it until a few days later. I've paid 30% of $5100 to this company upfront for only parts. RIP OFF!!! Even though the contract stated that they would charge another 50% after PEPCO energize the power, they wanted me to pay it after only replacing some parts inside. The technician didn't even finish the job because he had to go to another job and had to come back. Paying another 50% for replacing parts when I don't even know if everything is functional. I contacted Michael Bonsby to help me figure out why my mini-splits weren't performing appropriately several weeks ago. Someone came out quickly, and showed me how to use my remotes. One had been set to ambient rather than cool, rendering the system ineffective. The technician told me that if they weren't working when it became hot, then the system needed more refrigerant and someone could come out and put some in. It has been 90-100 degrees for the past several weeks in D.C., and the coolest room in my house is 80. I set an appointment online this past Wednesday for Thursday (the following day). I did not receive a confirmation, and so I called the office after a couple of hours. The person with whom I spoke at their office explained that while their website scheduling wasn't actually being received at the office, they could confirm that I would receive an appointment the next day because they scheduled it in-office when I called. I explained that I have a two-story house and that the outside unit was on the roof, and tech coming would therefore need a tall ladder. I forwarded the confirmation email that I received, stating this information, to the office email that is checked. The next day, which was Thursday, I received a call stating that they would not be coming to my confirmed appointment. They said that they could not come the next day, which was Friday. They said that they could confirm for Monday, which is today. I received a call from the Michael Bonsby tech around 4 pm today. He said that his ladder wouldn't reach two stories, and that he would call dispatch and see if there was a truck in the area that could handle my request. I received a call from dispatch stating that no one with a tall ladder could come out today, but that someone could come out sometime tomorrow. I don't believe them at this point and can't keep rescheduling meetings and appointments only for them not to show up. I told them that I would look for someone else, and I will. read more

I have called Bonsby and have been assured that I would receive a call back in return from a manager or person who could address the concerns that I have. Its literally 80 degrees outside I have no answer on why I'm sitting inside of my home (where there are children) without air? This company is the same as not so nice. Liam, a supervisor, repeatedly told us there was no issue, even though we had water dripping from our attic. 3 technicians later they finally realized they had installed a part of the AC backwards. I called up this company to do tuneup of my AC units. The technician came but did nothing in terms of tuneup like cleaning and lubrication and charged $99.00. However took a lot of measurements to tell me that the units need replacement. Did not provide any report about what is wrong with my currently running system. Michael Bonsby, HVAC is an overrated company that doesn't know how to fix electrical problems and charges way too much for "troubleshooting." I called them in March to fix an electrical switch problem. They came out and spend 2 hours trying to figure out the problem of my 2 & 3 way switches. They charged me $250 per hour for a total of $500, and could not "troubleshoot" the problem. The tech said the office would get in touch with me to schedule the actual "service" call, but I never got a call. I called another electrical company who diagnosed the problem in 10 minutes and only charged me a total of $680 to fix the problem, all in under an hour. When the office manager called me to pay my bill, she was extremely rude and unapologetic for the terrible customer service. Do not call them or hire them, they will rip you off!!!! read more

I was orginally with IAQ Medics and the HVAC guy was great but when I had issues with my fire place, they came out and it worked for 15 minutes. They said another tech would be out to fix it but then got bought out by Michael Bonsby. Once that happened my appointments account was lost between management changes and my plumbing appointment pushed back 3 times now. Not worth it. Spent $200 for a repair that last 15 minutes and been blown off every since. read more

On 9/12/2024 Michael Bonsby did a hot water tank flush for us. At that time they took a water sample for a water quality test. We have well water, and have noticed tastes in it, so it is important that we know if there are water quality issues. After not hearing back about the results of the water quality test after a month, I called Bonsby back. They said that somehow they had lost either the sample or the test results, so they came again on 10/21/2024 to take another water sample. After not hearing from them about the second test after a month and a half, I sent them a text on 12/10/2024, but got no response. I called them on 12/11, 12/12, and 12/13/2024 to ask what happened to the test. Each time I was told someone would get back to me, but they haven't. I really can't understand why they can't be bothered to return my calls or text me about the results of this test, especially since it has been three months, and they fouled up the first try. read more

Just started to work with this company for the first time and I paid $500 for a service contract for them to service both my units. When the technician came out my upstairs unit wasn't working so there was only 1 unit which he spent all of 5 min to service!!! He said everything looked fine and filter was fine, I was confused because it was only 5 min he was downstairs and I knew we had not changed our filter for at least 3 months! My husband came home and took filter out and it was filthy!! The technician never even took it out!!! I called upset and asked for manager to demand my $500 back that they did nothing for and her response was "we can't give your money back" are you serious??? This is the worst company and service I have ever received!!!! Don't use!!! Technicians are inexperienced and staff is horrible and wash their hands clean and don't own up to what they do wrong!! I have a new H Vac system (July 23). I have had 3 major problems (out multiple days) in less than 3 months (May 30 to August 24). One / factory defect, Two / burned out the entire electric system. Three / They have not come. (four calls but it is week end) 24 hour service means someone answers the phone 24 hours, but with 4 experiences now, I know it is not service 24 hours. I think there should be a lemon law, if this is not usual for them. This is ridiculous. I am 82 and must use a walker. My wife is 81 and uses a walker. I found this company on google to repair an issue with my a/c. They came out and fixed the issue, and also recommended a new heat pump system. I was already considering it, so I asked for a quote. They immediately made an appointment for me. The rep that came to my house was like a used car salesman ready to sell me what seemed like a pricey heat pump system and a water heater. I made the mistake to agree to the $20k for the installation of both but I just wanted this taken care of asap. They came the next day to install it. They said they would be done in 8 hours. A storm was coming, and I knew they were rushing the work towards the end. Basically I was getting no hot water hours after the water heater installation, and my cold water faucets upstairs were not working. I called the same day to have this issue fixed. I spoke with a manger and he told me he would take care of it personally the next day. After he showed up at the end of the day, he could not figure out why my 3 cold water faucets upstairs were not working and had the audacity to tell me he would have a plumber come and provide me with a quote to fix something that was working prior to them replacing my water heater! He sent a plumber that fixed the faucet issue in 2 minutes and said it was something they turned off and didn't turn back on. He stayed for an hour, but after he left, again no hot water. They eventually fixed the issue 2 days later! They did not even send a plumber this time, it was an electrician that fixed the issue, and he kept telling me how he was doing the best he could because he was not a plumber. It was an unbelievably disappointing and stressful experience to say the least. The only positive thing I can say is that the people in the call center were friendly. That's it. read more

I received a call from my fiance that my HVAC system stopped working in the middle of a freezing winter day while I was out of town. I asked him to call 3 companies and get estimates and see how quickly someone could come out. All 3 companies sent a rep. out that afternoon. Michael Bonsby said they could install the new unit in 2 days, and both of the other companies said it would be closer to a week for them. Michael Bonsby's price was also very reasonable and their warranty was much better than the other companies, so we chose them. They came out on the 2nd day, as promised, and according to my fiance, they were very friendly, professional, efficient, and knowledgeable. I returned home a couple days after the new unit was installed, and when I went downstairs, I noticed water on the floor under the laundry room sink. We called Michael Bonsby back, and they came out quickly. They diagnosed the issue, and it ended up not having anything to do with the new unit or anything they had done, but they did not charge us for coming back out or diagnosing the problem. That was very nice of them. Michael Bonsby is a better company in every way than the last company I had. I wish I knew about them sooner. They are an A+ company in my book. read more

Diagnosing a non working furnace I called Bonsby because we used them to replace an air conditioning unit and they did a good job. However, this time the technician came and was not able to fix the unit. He told us that we would need to either replace the exhaust motor for $1,450-1,750 or get a new furnace. This part costs about $76-190 online. Anyway, my husband decided to take a look and discovered that a small part had fallen off and that there was a loose connection. He reconnected the loose wire in 5 minutes even with the missing part. The furnace started working again. My service call was $89 and I don't feel I got any value out of it. The technician should have been able to fix that. read more

After gathering multiple quotes and availability to rectify the problem MB was the most reasonable and responsive to my requests. We had Michael Bonsby install a new heat pump system in November 2019. In January 2020, I discovered that the fused disconnect for the air handler had been sized incorrectly, causing two 60-amp fuses to melt, creating a hazardous condition in my home and leaving me without heat on a 17 degree day. When I called the company to have the problem remediated, they showed up unprepared and were unable to fix the problem. Despite the presence of a warranty, I had to fix the problem myself so that my pipes didn't freeze. The company did install a new disconnect correctly some days later but dragged their feet on reimbursement, leading the field service manager to reimburse me for my fix out of his own pocket. Recently my air handler's condensate drain pan cracked. It took a threat of legal action to get the company to fulfill their warranty service obligations. The crew that showed up to replace the drain pan did not appear to know what they were doing, and it looked like they were going to break the evaporator coil. They put the unit back together omitting the gasket that forms an air seal at the condensate drain port, then needed to take the thing apart again once I pointed out the missing gasket. At the moment the condensate drain trap is leaking on my floor and the service covers are not installed correctly. read more

I generally don't like flat-fee pricing, and Bonsby's flat free pricing is outrageous. Over $600 to install a thermostat, where the thermostat itself retails for under $100? Sheesh. And the price list is top secret, the office will tell you they don't have access to it. So you only can make the decision after the tech comes out, so even if you know what needs to be done, you can't make an informed decision ahead of time. read more

My furnace was not firing up properly (Thermostat would call for heat, blower would come on, furnace would ignite for about 4 seconds then cutoff, repeat once, then blower would just run constantly until you powered down the furnace -- nice electric bill for that!) I was under maintenance with another company, who came out for the "No Heat" call, and their tech (that will be ANOTHER write-up) completely mis-diagnosed the issue and created other issues - didn't know all this at this point - came and recycled power and it started - said if it kept occurring I should consider replacing the HVAC unit (12 years old) because it meant the circuit board was going on the fritz. So - problem progressively gets worse - to the point I spend hours trying to get the gas furnace to fire up....figure - well I guess it's time for a new one. So I call Michael Bonsby HVAC - things start REAL GOOD - get an appointment with "David" for Feb 10th (2021), comes out, arrives on time. I explain what's happening and he says it's the flame sensor detector that's dirty - opens the unit, cleans it and the furnace fires right up, he identifies some potential issues that indicate the unit has other things that need to be cleaned / etc and that most places would prob. charge $750 - $1000 as its outside of standard maintenance. Closes up the unit and we go to discuss my options. We discuss several items including new furnaces, because David says the builder installed unit is WAY over powered (like 100K BTUs and my house only needs 60K). I'm taking all this down, asking questions, etc. David quotes me two units - a recommended one that would be properly sized and get the job done, and then a more expensive one that will provide noticeably more comfort esp. in summer (SEER rating difference from 16 to 20). We also look at and discuss my unit that handles the upstairs - David makes lots of recommendations about the insulation levels, how the ducting system was not setup properly, etc, etc. I'm taking notes, asking questions..... As we wrap up, I ask David to quote me both types of units for install, and to quote with any additional discounts if I do both main and upstairs units at the same time (which he says he would give me additional discount). David says he will email me those quotes right away. Nearly two weeks later - haven't heard a peep out of him. Reading back over the other negative ratings....this seems to be a habit with this company....severely undermines my trust in them to back whatever work I might have had them do. Oh.....and to boot, NOT THE PROBLEM with the furnace failing to stay lit. Another guy (I was having several vendors come out and quote me new units) looked at the system, and within FOUR MINUTES correctly ID'd the problem ---- which was that the air intake (which has a filter right before the furnace chamber ---- was CLOGGED with leaves (which we will discuss on the other vendor that I had a maintenance contract with). This was also contributing to the dirty flame sensor. Cleared the clog and Viola!!!! furnace works perfectly - guy tells me I still have another 3 - 5 years before I need to consider a new one. $142 for the service call and to fix the problem (and he fixed other issues my "maintenance" vendor had created). That vendor is RA Home Services -- Nestor, he's getting a 5-star review from me. read more
